Props to BUDO Jake for doing this. A huge part of martial arts is humility. TO post this he is obviously putting himself out there to be criticized by haters on the internet. However, he is doing an invaluable service to the BJJ community showing this video. Awesome Jake, I've always liked your videos and respected your open mindedness in martial arts, but now you have 110% of my respect! oss!!!
I agree entirely. I had the same feeling while watching this that Jake is very humble to put this out there for all to see. I'm sure it would be a humbling experience for anyone to have a lesson with Rickson
syncopoly What the fuck are you talking about?? Criticized?? Humility?? That's Rickson Gracie; maybe you should Google the name. You act like Jake is being taught a lesson by a blue belt.
I am a black belt under 2 Rickson Gracie black belts, Luiz Calaudio and Thiago Veiga. I went to a 2 day long Rickson seminar in Shaumber, IL in 2013. And let me just say that Rickson makes everyone feel like they don't know much. He is famous for details and modifications of techniques. He taught this exact same technique to a room of 200 people, many of them HIS OWN BLACK BELTS. I didn't roll him, but I guess you feel even dumber when you do, from all accounts. I don't see why everyone is picking on Jake. He is open to the smallest details on the most basic of movements. That is what a martial artist should be like. He is a black belt. His black belt has nothing to do with your belt. Just as his understanding of technique has nothing to do with yours. Just like Rickson's understanding of technique has nothing to do with yours. Be a martial artist and have some humility. Nobody knows everything. Zip it and go train jiu-jitsu.
Seriously. Props to Jake for being the guinea pig. I doubt anyone criticizing him over the internet would have the guts to put himself out there like that.
I've taken privates with both Luiz Calaudio and Thiago Veiga, and you've got some of the best teachers. Rickson is unlike anyone else; he's a true master.
I recently purchased his new Self-Defense Unit series. I've been training under a Rickson Gracie blackbelt for over a decade now and still find it valuable. The biggest advantage I feel is how Rickson tells you where your weight should be and that can make all the difference in making things click.
I've been in BJJ for almost 3 years now. I never saw someone paint such a complete picture of what jiu-jitsu actually is. He's clearly a fantastic instructor with immense clarity and vision. At first it's invisible, but then you really see what's really going on in the movement, the pressure, the positioning. I'm really looking forward to the future for BJJ with Rickson Gracie taking charge.
I disagree a little bit. It would show a real putting aside of ego if it was say a white belt that was correcting Jake (assuming that the person actually could correct technique). Allowing a higher degree black belt to correct your technique is just maintaining beginners mind.
one additional thing real quick, white belts are actually very good teachers for black belts because they don't have those programed responses/movement, they show how someone on the street will respond. shows how good your technique really is.
point taken David Arginteanu, but still- he's publicly exposing flaws in his most basic of basic, bjj101 fundamentals as a black belt. sure, we could probably think of plenty more ego-destroying exercises if we brainstormed, but i'm still impressed with this.
A real samurai. It's a honor to see Rickson Gracie teaching the real jiu jitsu. How many black belts in the universe felt themselves like a child after this video. Thanks you Master.
AIMANALI I`m From Manaus and jiu-jitsu started here in 1976!!! you know land of Jacaré, Xande and Saulo Ribeiro, Fredson Paixao, Bibiano, Wallid Ismail, Jose Aldo, Omar Salum. Kiki, Paulo Coelho, Fredson Alves, Rodrigo Ribeiro, Barga Neto and so go on.. all my friends was looking for VHS tapes about Bruce Lee and I got one about Rickson x Zulu fight in 1983 and some others jiu-jitsu fighters!! so I discovered that we got our own Brazilian Samurai!!!
I think this video is a great example of one of the benefits of getting a private (1on1) lesson versus a normal group class. Not saying groups are bad (variety of classmates, etc.) but a private every now-n-then is a good way to sharpen specific skills.
I fully agree and not only from Rickson. Ive taken privates from no name Barra black belts and if you ask them to teach the basics theys show you this same upa with the ame head movement detail. In a group class its easy for the teacher to overlook this little detail and just show the technique. Sometimes you really have to observe the shapes that the teachers bodies are making and not just listen to the detail. Your eyes can show you more than your ears.
My favorite Rixon story; I was attending a seminar in Miami, I paid $400 for a two day course, and I was having difficulty with an armbar from the Guard. My partner called Rixon and he came over and watched me for a few attempts without success. Then, like an uncle or a brother, he put his hand on my shoulder and said " my brother, you lose 40 pounds and you get that armbar". That was the most expensive lesson I ever got. But I loved it, his honesty and devotion to Jiu Jitsu are hard to find.
We had a seminar from a Rickson black belt a few weeks ago (Shane Rice) and he taught us these details on the upa escape....and it literally blew our minds. Can't believe I'm watching this video right now straight from the boss.
My first bjj teacher Brandon Hetzler is a black belt under Rickson Gracie and this exact technique right here was one of the very first things I learned when joining back in 09'. The "upa straight back and never to the side" along with many other "invisible techniques" that I use to this very day, I find some purple belts at other schools haven't yet learned, essential things the Rickson Gracie style regarded as basics that all white belts should know before earning the first stripe are literally neglected by the large influx of bjj schools and teachers that like to focus on fast pace tournament style teaching.
Only the best can explain things in a clear and understandable way for everyone. As a complete beginner, I was so happy to watch this video. Mr. Rickson is a great and humble teacher that makes me love BJJ. Thank you Budo Jake for sharing these beautiful moments with us.
4 years late to the party but just wanted to echo what others have said already.... THANK YOU JAKE for doing this. Never mind what the haters say. This had to be an amazing experience for you and we're all privileged to have seen it and followed along.
I'm a blue belt in Sacramento, and I watched this video before yesterdays class and was able to implement it that day. It was amazing what a difference it made in my rolls.
It's so astonishing how very subtle changes have such big effects. It's practically magical. What an honor it must be to get the opportunity to train with a true master.
Jake, awesome video! Props for being humble; it was really great. Rickson, you're a living legend and I hope the JJ community embraces your principles of making JJ more effective....there is always room for improvement regardless of level. It takes maturity and courage to recognize our weaknesses; your a great Master.
I've always been a little unsure of what makes Rickson so great. I really feel like I saw it in this video,, with his mastery of the fine details that can make the difference between knowing a technique , and mastering it.
Congratulations Jake, your videos are do amazing, but this one is special, Rickson is different from everything I have saw in Jiu Jitsu, thank you for bringing him
talk about a gracie breakdown or an instructor who speaks similar to bruce lee philosophies... this is the ULTIMATE! A living legend is at hand here..Best BJJ episode and thanks Jake!
What amazes me is the ability Rickson has to grasp what the student (not his) knew as he planned his lesson plan and he was dead on as Jake didn't know the basics. That is what the coral belt represents: mileage.
I bet you Jake learned the upa the right way from Carlinhos and Feitosa but after years of doing more advanced techniques you forget that little invisible detail. And Rickson knows that a majority forget. It could have been any black belt. Ive even heard Ricksons own black belts are humbled on something very basic when he comes in and teaches. If you dont practice that basic invisible stuff and start moving ob to advanced stuff for years, you forget. Simple as that.
OMG. I just started my GJJ journey about 3.5 months ago under Prof. Leonardo Xavier (a 5th BB under Rickson) and learned this basic mount escape within the 1st month....I am so blessed. 🙏
As a fresh white belt, already graced with the experience of being profoundly stuck in mount under a much heavier guy, this is pure gold. Looking forward to next practice. Thank you.
after watching this video many years ago, and trying the upa with rickson's variation as my go-to mount escape (I get mounted a lot even to this day), I can hit this on practically anyone. ANYONE. its truly mindblowing. just a small detail like the head placement. unbelievable
My professor is a Black belt under Rickson, trained with him for years, used to teach Kron in the kids class back then. He lived with Rickson many years, and its insane how he teaches the same exact way RIckson does. The same way, it makes you feel like you dont know shit alot of times haha but in the best way. I cant begin to express how grateful I am to have a professor like him here
It’s simply brilliant...he’s changing the fulcrum thus maximizing leverage. It’s like moving a door knob from the middle of the door (ok leverage) to the side opposite the hinges (great leverage).
These videos are invaluable !!Jake did us all a great service this thing is what?, six years old still comes in handy because everybody starts at some point there are people right now as we speak but next year they’re going to start in these videos are going to really help
After watching this again and again I can see how Rickson is a rare master. He has respect for his student, and that is rare. And he has an understanding of the tiniest movements that make the biggest differences. I have learned from his two students, Tiago and Luis, and the Rickson method is a whole new experience. They can be successful in slow motion as well as on the fly, which is a test of how effective a technique really is.
Rickson, perhaps the nicest man I've met in the Arts, showed us this exact escape in 1992. And back then, he wouldn't allow any video taping of anything. We are all so dam lucky to have him doing video stuff now. It's like hitting the lottery.
I train at a certified Gracie Academy school. It is all self defense. The "upa" is taught like this right out of the gate. It is terrific to see master Rickson demonstrate it so simply and effectively.
Props to BUDO Jake for doing this. A huge part of martial arts is humility. TO post this he is obviously putting himself out there to be criticized by haters on the internet. However, he is doing an invaluable service to the BJJ community showing this video. Awesome Jake, I've always liked your videos and respected your open mindedness in martial arts, but now you have 110% of my respect! oss!!!
+ 1. Hats off to Jake. Fantastic lesson.
+1 thank you organizing this lesson and putting it out there, Jake! Simple concepts can't be overstated.
I agree entirely. I had the same feeling while watching this that Jake is very humble to put this out there for all to see. I'm sure it would be a humbling experience for anyone to have a lesson with Rickson
Thats how you grow. Look at your weaknesses honestly and work them out.

Do you know Berto?

It's it a video purchase or book ? Where can u buy it ?
Rickson please release a multi-hour instructional! That was amazing!
yes!!!
He is going to be releasing something on GU soon.
It's crazy how much I learned just from watching this.
I've been in BJJ for almost 3 years now. I never saw someone paint such a complete picture of what jiu-jitsu actually is. He's clearly a fantastic instructor with immense clarity and vision. Respect to Jake for putting his ego aside for this. No shame in being corrected by Rickson Gracie, no matter what your rank.
I disagree a little bit. It would show a real putting aside of ego if it was say a white belt that was correcting Jake (assuming that the person actually could correct technique). Allowing a higher degree black belt to correct your technique is just maintaining beginners mind.

+mister mendola, very good point. I didn't think about the public side for some reason. Thanks.
A real samurai. It's a honor to see Rickson Gracie teaching the real jiu jitsu. How many black belts in the universe felt themselves like a child after this video. Thanks you Master.
Wow, I'm in awe, what a privilege it must be to have a 1on1 session like this with Rickson.
I start to training jiu-jitsu in 1988 because of the Rickson Gracie!! He is the man!!
how did you know about him in 1988 ?
AIMANALI I`m From Manaus and jiu-jitsu started here in 1976!!! you know land of Jacaré, Xande and Saulo Ribeiro, Fredson Paixao, Bibiano, Wallid Ismail, Jose Aldo, Omar Salum. Nice.
Good googely moogely.
I have a feeling this isn't the first time Rickson has made a black belt into a blue belt.
White belt
NinjaBear567 No belt
And won't be the last time
the smallest details with the biggest impact. Thanks to both Budo and Rickson for this video
What a master, I'm blown away.
I think this video is a great example of one of the benefits of getting a private (1on1) lesson versus a normal group class. Not saying groups are bad (variety of classmates, etc.) but a private every now-n-then is a good way to sharpen specific skills.

I'm sure it isn't easy to humble yourself in front of an audience like youtube but Jake did it. Much respect for Jake. He's the man.

I wish the video went on a bit longer. Sounded like they were about to have a great conversation at the very end.
that'll cost you the big bucks
keep your feet on th- yeeeeeessssss
kkkkkkkkklol
hahahaha, now let me show you the invisible ;-)
Rickson succeeds in being both an exceptional fighter and an exceptional teacher by the quality of his remarks, correcting many important points.
Jake, you did it again, unprecedented! Offering the entire martial arts community such a treat, thank you.
We had a seminar from a Rickson black belt a few weeks ago (Shane Rice) and he taught us these details on the upa escape....and it literally blew our minds. Can't believe I'm watching this video right now straight from the boss.
Shane Rice Victory Jiu Jitsu
themushroomwizard yep he more dropped by for training, awesome guy and teacher
Man, what an honor. That was invaluable. I need more.
I could see your invisible thoughts. "Holy shit I'm rolling with Rickson!!!"
What a privilege! A true Master, a true Samurai: Master Rickson Gracie - the best of all times! Thank you!
0:20 "I'd like to show you something invisible"
That's what she said.
Rickson's the best.
godDMN!! I'm good, I SAW the invisible ,guess I'm the choossen one ;-)

Thanks to Jake for doing it wrong. I got teary eyed imagining Rickson correcting me. Awesome.
You will,believe me
He is a great master. Extremely technical.
Ricksons u r a master genius! That bridge n roll with ur head move to the side? That little detail helped me immensely.
ok, so I want a 4 dvd instructional with this kind of stuff, pls get on it.
A true master of his craft.
Only the best can explain things in a clear and understandable way for everyone. As a complete beginner, I was so happy to watch this video. Mr. Rickson is a great and humble teacher that makes me love BJJ. Thank you Budo Jake for sharing these beautiful moments with us.
Makes me feel I'm going to the right school! Valente Brothers (Miami). Helio certified instructors. Not too many can tout that!
RIckson is a JEDI.... Kron was his padawan...
Did you hear at the end Jake asks a question and Rickson- "Pick any other one" like a bad ass
This is the best ive seen in Budo videos! Jiu Jitsu without self defense is like an arrow with no bows! Please inform more on jiu jitsu self defense!
I wish this video was longer , Thank you Jake and Budo team for this. Truly amazing.
Hats off to Jake for posting this up. You are a true BB for admitting that you also make mistakes.
I tried the technique Rickson showed with the umpa and got it in class today. I was like damn this is crazy.
Yep! Upa goes diagonally, it's not a bridge. Finally managed to do this on someone 40lbs heavier than me.
Big thumbs up for that excellent episode. It was all I would expect from GJJ.
Thanks a lot Budo Jake, keep the good work!
Rickson is The KING.... Great Teacher ..... Knows how to pass on the information.....
i am overwhelmed... this art is beautiful
This mans is teh Amabassador of true GJJ!! Genius!!

absolutely amazing knowledge, thank you master Rickson
Damn. What a perfect breakdown and compliment to a staple technique.
great video, great visualization of the invisible part
This blew my mind. Rickson always will be the man!
Rickson makes it simple. AWESOME teacher!

a great message from a great teacher.

Geez Master Rickson is a wizard.
