I am blessed that Sensei Erik is my teacher and I get to travel out to CSW to learn Catch, Jiu Jitsu, MMA & STX. Sensei Erik is a fountain of knowledge and more importantly a God fearing kind and humble human. We need more men like Sensei Erik in this world. 🙏🙏
Not a grappler or MMA guy but if there was one person in the martial arts world I'd love to train with, it would be Erik Paulson. He seems like such a good teacher.

So glad to hear the respect for the discipline of mind that comes from traditional martial arts spoken about here. Having mental discipline will help people be a better fighter. There is great value in facilitating a peaceful state of mind, it means you don’t waste your energy on useless things, it means you can apply that energy into something more useful , be it your training, recovery or just having better relationships with people. This can help you negotiate a better deal for yourself in all manner of situations, including avoiding unnecessary conflict. There is a reason why in the east that Buddhism is so entwined with the martial arts. It was also the case in the west for Millenia for knights to be trained by Christian monks. I am not saying you need to be religious here, I am just pointing out the value of self discipline.
Totally agree. I do TMA, and I was always taught to always be polite and never talk bad about another style, no matter what you really think in your heart. Unfortunately that attitude seems to be rare in the modern sport fighting world. Politeness and humility can get you out of more sticky situations when fighting would make things worse.
Soucj respect for this man. When I was in TKD, a huge pet peeve of mine were black belts with egos. Stay humble because there's always someone better. And when you come across that better person, you benefit from befriending them so they can teach you. Also, its just basic human compassion.
Thank you for the class educate lesson. You really put it into perspective. Jiu Jitsu has changed my life for the better in so many ways. Even as a special forces Marine I never felt confident in a conflict. Now Im beginning to gain confidence, but the more I learn the more confident I am in knowing I dont need to fight in the first place and its totally avoidable. Take the opportunity to show compassion and what the heck invite the guy to class so he can learn to grow in life. Spread the love and build a better community.
I have had the honor and pleasure to grapple with a few of Mr. Paulson’s students and they are absolutely humble yet, devastating…my dream is to train under Mr. Paulson one day even for a day or a month… I hate to say this but there is a fair amount of MMA guys that talk a lot of crap and trash and are cocky….granted, they are awesome at what they do… I really believe the MMA trash talking super stars made trash talking and disrespect and talking back to instructors seem to be the norm and accepted outside of TMA schools…and it is a bit disconcerting… Glad to see great teachers like Erik Paulson upholding the value of true budo… Thanks for the video…I already highly admire Mr. Paulson, after this video, I have even greater respect…

4:31 is a culture problem and it’s everywhere. Lack of respect, especially respect towards elders. Hollywood, rap and mainstream and social media is rotting our culture from the inside out. Traditional Martial Arts should be taught in elementary schools.

Mr Paulson is great. I trained with him once, back in '99. Our dojo focuses on Eskrima-Kali-Arnis, Karate & classical yoga.
