Before the ufc existed, i was trained by eric paulson, in combat submission wrestling, he was building his own company even back in the 2000s, training coachs for other gyms world wide, i got the rare chance to meet him as a young mma fighter 16 years ago, in scotland, ive been following him ever since. his reach is far and wide
Yeah, I trained with Erik in the early 90s when he was doing Shooto because I was with the JKD family in So Cal. I had more grappling knowledge than most people in the world back then, but now I'm terrible! Lol. Erik is a great guy, a supremely knowledgeable trainer and a martial Arts legend!
He would've been a success in the early 90s when he was plenty young...but the Gracies didn't want him to compete. He'd been studying BJJ with them since 1986 and studied grappling with Japanese Shooto fighters. He had a lot more experience than Ken Shamrock, who had only grappled for 1 year. Later, Renzo made him compete in the "Striker's Division" of a tournament where he couldn't use submissions (Renzo also competed and didn't want to face Paulson). Eric won his first fight but lost to a large kickboxer (Warring) in the 2nd round he could've easily submitted. Renzo won the grappler's division then was able to submit Warring in the final fight because the rules changed to "anything goes" in the final fight. Afterwards Rickson wouldn't let Paulson train with them so he started training with the Machado Bros. It shows what snakes most of the Gracies are.
@@bjjfreak8261 There's no way of knowing that. Paulson had both years of BJJ and catch training and was a much better striker. His main disadvantage was the whole "student vs. teacher" psychological thing and the fact that Paulson sometimes wasn't aggressive enough. Everyone thought Renzo, Royce, Belfort, etc. would destroy a Japanese former pro wrestler with zero BJJ training and....they lost instead.
You also forgot Billy Robinson. He is also he student of Dan Inosanto... I rememebr when he and I used to chat...He called what he did as his JKD. It follows the Tao of Jeet Kune Do.
I trained with Erik in the early 90s when he was doing Shooto because I was with the JKD family in So Cal. I had more grappling knowledge than most people in the world back then, but now I'm terrible! Lol. Erik is a great guy, a supremely knowledgeable trainer and a martial Arts legend!
Erik Paulson is a beast! I remember his younger days, yes he was beat in World Combat by ex IBF Cruiser weight champion James Warring in a striking only fight which Paulson honestly would have beat if not for the old school rules when hair pulling was legal. Warring got ahold of his pony tail with one hand and punched with the other. He never let go. I was a fighter and now a trainer. Paulson is an absolute legend in all MMA circles.
A Drews That long hair and those kung fu pants. One of my absolute favorites as a kid, and one of the greatest and most open minded trainers on planet Earth.
+A Drews He was JKD then and he was a huge disappointment. JKD was suppose to be the MMA of its day. Then a boxer comes in and pulls his hair. JKD was all about reality and in the end it didn't do the job. I was training in JKD at the time and it was such a let down to see not a single JKD fighter go anywhere.
Worst part about it is that if Paulson had won that fought he would have gone on to fight one of the Gracies....i forget if it was Renzo or Rickson but EP had better striking than either of them and its possible he could have won. Man i wish that fight had happened.
ive trained at csw back in 09 hes a crazy man and knows so much shit its crazy he even knows pressure points he trained me for my 2nd mma fight and i was completely sore i told him he said turn around and he cracked my neck shoulder and back and all of it went away eric your the man!
MMA is so underrated and appreciated. It unites both Grapplers and strikers. It challenges a human being to adjust in seconds in order to win. Erik Paulson is the truth. He simplified grappling with CSW.
Well of course, no one skill can win a fight but the problem in the UFC with submissions is that many of the fighters do not chain their submissions together, making easy to avoid them. Plus, there is a time limit so it is smarter to wait out a round on top rather than to go for something (e.g. GSP). That being said, Sensei Paulson has been doing this long enough to know when exactly to go for a submission and how to finish it, you should watch some of his videos where he talks mma strategy
Great clip, I have seen most of Eriks videos and really like CSW 2011 Camp, Killer leg locks, Ultimate MMA Training, but really all of his are good. I actually rent 95% of my training videos from online from Goldstarvideo. It is a good deal in that the cost is only 10 bucks per disc for 30 days and they ship them out quick to ya. I think this is the best deal on the internet. They do have about all of Eriks videos.
In a tournament where his bracket wasn't allowed to use submissions, after having a tough fight earlier in the night, and again having his hair used against him.
I saw the lineages there up in the info thing, and having never seen Paulson fight assumed he would be an unstoppable JKD, TKD, Thai fighting monster. So much for the black belts. Sexy ground fighting, though. The second he went to the ground it was over. Well, maybe 2 seconds.
He made him commit to the stand up, and then the quick kill, nice. Even though the other guys stand up was shit, he probably could of beaten him on his feet as well. He was probably just fearful of Paulson's ground game, which makes it even more difficult.
I can see every frame these strikes are slow. How do you not lose speed as you age? You don't have to lose power and power lifters prove that. Speed though..... does old age really equal slow motion?
Yes , age fucks up everything. Speed and power are two sides of the same coin. Power is a function of Work over time. Of course work over less time equals more speed. But if you can't generate enough force , then your punching speed will suffer also
TENNSUMITSUMA absolutely not you do not have to get slower with age I have not and then some people are born quicker than others but i think both of them being over weight did have something to do with speed
his first slap was an attempt to grab his own hand to prevent the lock. when paulson isolated the elbow he knew he wasnt going anywhere, so he tapped a bit early so paulson would know to slow the momentom of the extension. once you know what to feel for, you know when your gone because hyperextension will slow further training down not to mention a break. there was an escape on the arm on the down side but the timing would have to have been there, and paulson would have to be slipping on the wrist control, and I bet he wasnt. definately not staged on this fight..
Sensei Erik would have most likely beat him standing if he wanted from what I was seeing. Maybe a bit more abd and counter striking on the half beat....his striking game...underrated. Maybe he just decided to be safe and finish the fight early. Slow it down & notice at the around 11:40 Erik lands a solid right and Jones counters and the announcers give credit to the wrong fighter for landed strike. :) As a matter of factorial Erik outside slips it to the left. So right before Sensei takes him down, he had the best shots in the stand-up, imho. ruclips.net/video/gWbmkz35NeA/видео.html
Leg locks do not require much strength or athleticism and can easily be performed on opponents much larger than yourself. It pisses ME off how ignorant and presumptuous some people on the internet are.
also any1 who wants to train and fight csw is a great gym its off imperial highway past the brea mall hell get you in shape cardio satrength and technically wise
Yeah sorry, I didn't realize that you had a state of the art fighter simulation program compartmentalized in your brain. Since you're obviously so intelligent, you must understand how leg locks work. Just in case you don't, leg locks are basically a game of chess where you flow from move to move and the one who can think the most moves ahead wins... So imagine a novice playing a chess master, who do you think will win?
+MrBoommer1 Not at all. This is 2007. Strikers were still strapping on MMA gloves who were clearly out of their element. Even today you see HWs who hit the mat and are practically clueless.
Erik Paulson is just that good. I've training with him and know his skill level first hand. Some of the best MMA guys in the world look to him and others in the Inosanto academy to guidance.
Experienced guys tap quickly too, it's to avoid injury. If they feel they aren't going to get out of it, or don't feel like struggling to do so, they'll just tap before anything gets fully locked out.
You do not have to get slower with age Erik is way over weight if he was 50ble lighter he would be lighter on his feet. Erik hands are not that good he got hit with some stuff he should not have.
Spooky mansion Fan What kind of comeback fight would you like an older, obviously declined fighter to have after being away from pro comepetition for years ?

As a student who use to train under the CSW banner this fills me with pride. Go hard Sensei Paulson!

The description forgot the most important of Erik Paulson's lineages: he's a Catch wrestling master. Learned Catch wrestling from Yorinaga Nakamura
You also forgot Billy Robinson.

Paulson is just a beast on the ground!!
I remember when he was doing the Inosanto seminars. He was teaching some cool stuff back then in the mid 90's

Lots of respect for the elder pushing the pace of the fight/nice quick sub
Wicked Eric Paulson arm lock “man of a thousand holds “ JKD
That's one of the most textbook perfect armbars I've ever seen in MMA.

Combat Submission Wrestling rocks!!!
Erik is a beast. Looks like just the average stocky guy. He could break any non trained fighters arm, ankle, knee within 25 seconds.

In a tournament where his bracket wasn't allowed to use submissions, after having a tough fight earlier in the night, and again having his hair used against him.
I would say that Bas is good at them but definitely not a master, Erik has over 30 years of experience and is a true master.
Legend.

Paulson would've beat Rickson. Paulson was the real first mixed martial artist before Frank Shamrock.
Riickson was by far the BEST ever🎉❤
Perfect take down and arm bar
Bravo ! ! !
@FIVEstarFRO Not quite, GSP tried to 'Kimura' Hughes from the bottom of side control first, which led to the spinning armlock counter.

lol Erik Paulson once got beaten by a kick boxer with no ground game
Erick paulson vs Royce Gracie
He had no chance on the ground with Paulson. He should've worked on his sprawl before this fight.
Erik doesnt need condition.... he will beat you with knowledge!
@strokerman01 yes i agree with you but my precedent comment is true too erik paulson is the yoda of grappling xd
sorry for my bad english
