I was in middle school when this song was out. I hear this song at the end of each TV season of Supernatural. This is a 70's song. I'm a song writer and musician. These men here are extremely talented and understand how to just jam and come up with a song that way. Every band that is out owe a lot to the music makers of the past. They set the path.

Me personally, I go back to the 70s in my mind. Started high school in '79 so this is my era for sure. While it's definitely identifiable with the 70s, you're right in saying it's timeless. Haven't heard a single person say they don't like Kansas or this song specifically.

I'm 56, if you're keeping track. :) I remember hearing this on the radio back when, but I really got into it while watching the TV show Supernatural. One of the main characters was into hard rock and always played tapes in his car, and the show used a lot of hard rock in its soundtrack. They'd usually do a "Previously on Supernatural" montage right at the top of the episode, cuts from various scenes, no dialogue, just the visuals over rock music. They used various songs, but if you watch the show, you soon figure out that when the "Previously" montage is set to "Carry On My Wayward Son," that episode is going to ROCK. :D
There's this one episode, quite a ways in, set at a girl's school, where the students are doing a play based on the Winchester brothers, the main Supernatural characters. (Yes, they're also "fictional" characters within their own universe. Long story; watch the show. :) ) The whole episode is basically the showrunners making fun of their own fans, which is a dick move. But at the end of the play, the whole cast (of the play -- the students -- not the whole cast of the show) is on stage singing "Carry On My Wayward Son" a capella. It's a very quiet arrangement, and it's really beautiful.

I am a lifelong guitarist and singer. I was playing this song in the early 80's. Kansas was not just a good band, they were a GREAT band. Their music is timeless. It's a travesty that they aren't in the music hall of fame. It's good to see younger people understanding and enjoying truly awesome music. Your enthusiasm is really nice to see.

The high school parties my brother used to have in the basement in the late 70's: Black-light posters, tiger print couch, bean bag chairs, lava lamps, bumper pool table, kick ass stereo and turntable playing Zeppelin, Boston, Bad Co, ELO, Foreigner, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Jethro Tull, Cheap Trick, crazy ass friends and the awesomely cool chicks with their Farrah Fawcett haircuts, their body hugging t-shirts and blue jeans so tight they had to use a coat hanger to pull up the zipper. He and his buds always let me hang too even though I was three years younger than them. No Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat to fuck up the vibe either. Love you brohan, miss you man.

I'm almost 36. This song brings me back to the 80's. Being a kid, running around the neighborhood (cause you could do that back then without fear) playing. There was a park across the street from us, and there was some woods that was pretty close. I loved going into the woods. A bunch of us would have a bonfire, and roast marshmallows. An older kid had a boombox that had batteries. He would bring that and take some of his dads tapes for us to listen to. This was one of the tapes he had. Great memories!

Grew up in the 70s. One of the main factors, I think, in making vintage rock so compelling is that it was pretty much all analog. There's just an organic sound that comes with analog recordings that just sounds more natural and pleasing. Great reaction Billy.

    • @nolaserv
      @nolaserv 3 года назад

I agree 100% Even the bands that are still together today can't duplicate the same sound as then because of that. Also many people think digital is apple pie but the only thing it is good for is surround sound and RF channel frequency re-usage. Digital has many losses with audio because of converting analog to digital is an auto loss then converting it back is even more loss.

Ok so here goes..... I enjoy your channel. I am a just turned 50yr. old woman. Eastern WV raised. Born in 1969. The Age of Aquarius, which is the sign I was born undernd. I have diverse influences because I was a small child of the 70's. This is a crazy ride of transion musically through some vastly different and evolving musical sound and genres. From birth to age 10 was 70s decade. So I grew up hearing my parents and other people in my lives music of there generation. 70s rock and roll was ingrained in me during some formative years I completely appreciate the instrumentation of multiple instruments bouncing off each other and blending together long solos of the epic talent of guitar playing. Definitely blues influence. I began to really enjoy singer-songwriters and their vocals backed by the full band. . So also my parents graduated in the early 60s I listened to alot of Motown and 60s music Blended in to the music that I grew up and continue to enjoy. Now the 80s decade the music and the industry was almost like schizophrenic. There was so much advancement and creativity with different sounds and Technical sounds and just a lot of changes. BANDS FIGHTING FOR THE rites to their own material. Epic rise and fall of rock legends. I was a 1987 graduate and sometimes when I was younger I was almost was embarrassed of my generation of music.. I was into every genre metal bands rock bands techno punk alternative then Madonna broke out when I was 15. A cultural change or evolving was evident. So intro into Pop age and rap The intro of MTV. The 80s was ridiculously packed with a tremendous movement forward for all genres of music. I LIVED It all. Except Pop country. BUT that's a whole other discussion. As is the British invasion which IS A party I seemed 2 show up late for . There you have. You asked to know who's listening to your Channel. I could go through Decades of my experience but it seems that my post is rambling.
I love what you're doing and will definitely keep Turning in.

As I recall, this song was taken as kind of an ode to returning Vietnam Vets. The war ended the year before and there were a LOT of troubled guys coming back. Many had been drafted. 50,000 plus dead. The country even more divided than now. This song really resonated with the times. Listen to it some time with that in mind. Much more gravitas. Recorded at a Kirshner Rock concert, there's a video somewhere on this site, of this video where Steve's vocals were live. Godbless Kerry for writing an anthem.

I've seen Kansas in concert & I can tell you they more than earned their label as a rock'n'roll Supergroup. They are incredibly talented & bring down the house! They're still touring & still sound fantastic. It's just such a shame that Kerry Livgren had that stroke in 2009 & hasn't been able to tour with the group ever since.

I'm a 55 year old Michigan transplant in Arizona because fuck snow. Reminds me of the late seventies when they played it on the radio often. This band was the very best the United States could do in the 70s for progressive rock.

I was born in 83. First time I heard this song was on Dream Theater's 1995 album "A Change of Seasons" where they play a bunch of tribute songs in one big song called "The Big Medley" (Pink Floyd, Kansas, Queen, Journey, Dixie Dregs, Genesis)

If you love this you have to react to some other amazing 70's bands. React to
    1. Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival
    2. Simple Man by Lynryd Skynyrd
    3. Freebird by Lynryd Slynyrd
    All soooooo good

Bands like Kansas, Boston, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the Eagles define rock for me. I am in my 40's now and grew up listening to vinyl rock albums from the 1960s and 1970s that my two elder brothers owned. Thanks for your reviews and reactions! I enjoy them.

I was still pretty young in the late 70's when I started hearing my brother play Kansas (and Pink Floyd, and Black Sabbath, and Nazareth, and....) on his record player 😅 Maybe 6-7 years old.

Kerry Livgren came up with this song in one night. Came in the next day and as they were finishing up an album told them he wanted to know what they thought of it. The other band members were blown away and wondered why he was so low key about coming up with such a mind blowing song.

This song brings me to the 1970s when I bought the Leftoverture album. Songs remained just as complex in the next two decades but in the eighties synthesizers took over. I think music began to be dumbed down and made more simplistic around 2000. Even then, they were more complex than anything produced today.

I graduated high school and 81 and was a head-banger. I'm not going to describe that for you you should know. So I have always loved this song. For me it's right up there with Bohemian Rhapsody. My other favorite is Manfred Mann Blinded by the Light. Rock music then was all over the place in terms of style. The other great ones is pretty much anything off of Van Halen 1 but particularly eruption and Jamie's Cryin, Cheap Trick The Kids Are Alright in live at Budokan and I'm a huge scorpions man. And this song did get a Resurgence with the CW TV show Supernatural which now in 2020 is ending the series after 15 years. Episode 200 titled fanfiction as a slowed down version of Carry On Wayward Son that is absolutely beautiful. I'm so glad you're enjoying the music I grew up on
