One of my favorite songs. I'm a recovering alcoholic myself. I've been sober since October 2, 2011 and I still struggle with it everyday. My kids were 10 years old and 6 years old when I stopped drinking. I'm by no means a perfect father but after several years of my kids living with me as an alcoholic I finally realized how I was affecting my kids and my wife's life and I knew I had to change. Thank you so much for your reaction to this song!!

Congrats on staying sober. It's not easy, man. My Dad is an alcoholic/addict, and to this day he says "I dont have a problem."
My Mom was an addict/alcoholic. She has 9 years sober. So, keep it going, man. Hats off to you.

I wish Billy Currington was more popular, he doesn't get near as much recognition as he deserves, and considering what has been passed off as country the last 15 years he should been in the grand ole opry.

I grew up with addict parents, and this song hits me in the feels. I’ll never forget the feeling of realizing they had gone home in the middle of my graduation, and being alone when it was finished, and watched all my friends get hugged and congratulated by their parents.
You should review Montgomery Gentry, I’ll keep the kids.

This happened to me at my college graduation. My mom is the addict and she roped my dad (they've been divorced 20 years now) into leaving before the ceremony was over. The speaker told us to look at our parents and thank them and I couldn't see that far away but I believed they were there. My heart hurt so bad when I realized they weren't. I expected my mom but she roped my dad in too was the worst. He showed up to all my HS senior events she was too drunk for.
I know this sucks but it feels better know that I'm not alone. It doesn't hurt less! But people with sober parents don't get it.

My Dad, until the day he passed never drank, smoked, cussed, or did drugs and that is my example to live by. I am 48 years old now and so grateful I followed his example. I have friends who tell me how they wish they had followed my example and never tried tobacco or alcohol and that is a great testament to not only me but my Dad. Great reaction video Billy. Loved it

This song reminds me of my own father, who like you is a military veteran and an alcoholic. He lives 30 minutes from me but I only see him on holidays, and birthdays because of his drinking. I worry about my children seeing him like that and I have to protect them from their own grandfather. It is very painful just to see him and see my kids wanting to see their grandfather but they know that my dad's an alcoholic, they've seen it. Now my son who is about to be 18 in 3 months wants to join the Army, and he refuses to talk to my dad about it because my dad is trying to push my son into the Navy like he was. My son wants to go his own path, his father and I agree fully with him. I will never have a good relationship with my dad because of many past mistakes. I have not had an alcoholic drink since I was 21, I am 35 now. My kids are first, ALWAYS.

I'm 18 now when I was around 9 my dad started drinking And when I see him I get scared I'm praying to God hoping he will realize that he will see I'm terrified that I'm thinking that I'd lose him in my life by the time I turned 10 he came to me and he said he promised he will stop drinking I noticed that he'd hadn't had a beer in his hand but just to make sure I went up to him and smelled his breath and it didn't smell like alcohol he kept his promis he made me cry tears of happiness and looking back how he used to be and seeing him today makes me happy and every day and night I get down on my knees praying to god thanking him for getting him to change his ways of being an alcoholic makes my life feel much more happy so if your mom or dad is an addict just pray to God every day and night asking him to change their ways of being an addict to start being sober and don't worry god will get them stop trust me god will always be there for you and them

  • @dawnietheheartie3276

This song is such a difficult one for me to listen to. When it came out, it was agonizingly relatable, since my son was living it. He was a kid just like this, and to this day, he can't listen to it at all and will leave the room if it comes on the radio or something. His father was a bad alcoholic, and when he was little, my son idolized him and would wait for him to come home from work at night, just like the kid in the song, only to be completely ignored. It broke his heart and mine, because no matter how much love he got from me, he wanted to be dad's little man. About half his childhood was spent without his father at all, because we divorced and alcohol was more important, and he spent several years with anger issues because of it. He's 23 years old now, and he's realized that none of it had anything to do with him, but it has affected so much in his life since he now never wants to be a father because of the example his father gave him. I applaud parents who are recovering alcoholics and got their lives together so they could be better parents for their kids, because the damage can go deep and be very long lasting. No child should ever have to live like this.

People think I'm strange because I'm over 21 and don't drink. I have even been denied a place to live because I choose to be sober.

This is my Uncle. He was a functioning alcoholic. Monday through Friday and on the way home would stop and get his beer and his whiskey and stay drunk from Friday night until Sunday night. He was a wonderful man when he was sober and even when he was drunk he wasn't mean. Out of 11 uncles he was my favorite. He died of alcohol related disease. He left 4 children. The oldest was 11. His son never drank a drop, never did drugs and killed himself when he was 27 leaving 3 children of his own. We as parents have got to be aware of what we are teaching our children.

Teaching your daughter by example is the best way! My son is 54 now, and he doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke. That's the best possible way to teach her a way of life. If you tell your daughter not to drink, and you drink yourself, -- that "Do as I say, not as I do" philosophy JUST DOESN'T WORK!

This always reminds me of a childhood friend of mine. His dad was a wonderful person, when he was sober. But he was an alcoholic and would turn into a total jerk when he drank. My friend was close to us dad and was often embarrassed by his dad’s behavior. My friend and my mom shielded me and I only seen him obviously drunk once, and that was enough. It broke my heart to know that my friend had to deal with this.

The most important lesson to learn about life is "it's not about you."
It's similar to something a priest once told me about tragedy, "heaven is perfect. How are you going to know what that even means without bad. Moreover, tragedy for some else is an opportunity for you to do good to know what that feels like. Moreover, tragedy that happens to you may be a message,... but maybe the message isn't for you." Once you have kids, it's about them.

My father's example is why I rarely drink I have had a bottle of alcohol bought for new year's last until the next new year's day if not that long almost as long. Also why the few times I do drink I will never get in the car and drive. I watched a man who was good enough to sometimes substitute drive for his friend who had a sprint dirt track racing car. Get so bad at driving it was scary. Finally since he would go to get the alcohol anyway. If I was able to I would drive him myself to know that he wouldn't be killing someone else or himself.

    Billy You So Crazy
My birthday is Thursday on the 4th and I was wanting to see if you would do a request for me.
Bon Jovi August 7th 4: 15, it is an excellent song if you know the story behind it and I can answer any questions you might have about the song, if you have any..

I have been watching you for a few weeks. I have a couple suggestions. Sorry if you have done them. Someone else requested, "Holes in the floor of Heaven," that's a great song. Also Disturbed, "The Sound of Silence," and "The Light." The last two are not country songs. I like all music and those are songs everyone should hear.

This is why I told my kids I don't have a family. I will tell them the truth when they are old enough. My whole dads side of the family are druggies and drunks. My dad is in jail for life. He is serving 2 life sentences for rape and murder. My kids don't need them in their lives. I still love and pray for them daily but my kids won't know what I went through. I don't drink or do drugs. My doctor recommended weed for pain and I still won't touch it.
