Amy Lee, on what this song is about:
"This song was actually written about my now-husband. I’d been in a really bad, abusive relationship, which had been very difficult for a long time. I thought that I was doing a pretty good job of pretending I was okay, but Josh [Hartzler, Amy’s husband], this guy that I didn’t know really well at the time but I liked a lot.. well, he and I went into a restaurant while my bandmatess were parking the car. When we sat down, he looked at me right in the eyes, and said, ‘So, are you happy?’ He didn't think I was, despite all the pretending. It just caught me really off guard. I felt very exposed, but it felt good at the same time - like he could see me. That's where the line ‘How can you see into my eyes like open doors?’ came from."

Amy, if you read this, please do a collaboration with Sharon den Adel. Your fans in the USA can't get to Europe, so that would be a consolation gift for us. :-D 😅😄😃😂

@FE Rebekah this song was recorded way before Lee married her now husband. So, before he was able to bring her to life; maybe, bring her back to life?

@FE Rebekah you're right, of course! I can't argue with any of that. :o)

@FE Rebekah When this song was released, she was still in an abusive situation, therefore still in that feeling of nothingness she sings about here. It was a cry for help at the time. Since getting out of that situation, she has written songs about fighting for herself and rejecting abusers, particularly Call Me When You're Sober.

I was listening to this song when I was trapped in a very physically and mentally abusive marriage! Well, this song woke my butt up and I took my kids and went to a shelter. I left that animal! Happier ever since! I became a something, a nurse. Xx

I realize it's not the same, but I've been in a relationship with an abusive woman. It was very hard to get out of. I suppose I should be glad we hadn't had kids yet, because it is much harder for men to get custody of their children. 😢 I'm happy you were able to protect yourself and your kids by getting away.

I first heard this song as a depressed teenager. It may very well get better, but it never completely goes away. It's something that stays with you... it's something that you live with... it's something that you struggle with every day. All you can do is take it one day at a time and seek out the small pockets of happiness wherever you can find them.

Her record label forced her to have a male vocal on this song for the album but when she sings it live it's just her... I saw them live for the first time on my 18th birthday back in 2003 and again a couple years later and each time they were AMAZING

I first heard this song shortly after my mother died. I was experiencing night terrors for the first time. The lyrics of this song reflected back how I felt and used words that reflected some of my terrors. Strangely enough, hearing this song helped more than anything. I felt like other people felt what I was feeling strongly enough to write this song and sing it so beautifully. And that meant I wasn't alone. Evanescence has been my go to music since then. Thank you for sharing your reactions.

Amy Lee, one of the best female vocalists today. Her friend, Lzzy Hale, another great one. Amy - Heaven, Lzzy Hell. They do a couple of duets. And they bother do Seether's "Broken" you can see the difference.

This song was actually written about the man who would become her husband. She's told the story many times in interviews.
Amy Lee was on a double date with her boyfriend at the time, and a guy named Josh was there with another girl. They had gone ahead to get a table at a restaurant together and were in an elevator. They had barely exchanged ten words with each other and Amy was under the impression he didn't like her. Then Josh simply turns to her and asks, "Amy, are you happy?" And Amy realized that she wasn't, and was shocked that someone who had known her for such a brief time could see her so clearly. That's where the line "How can you see into my eyes like open doors?" comes from.
Six or seven years later they were married. They've been married for 12 years now have a little boy together.

🙄 there's still plenty of meaningful music out there, you're just looking in the wrong places. There's a majority of Rap that's more about the energy and fun of the song or the the beat.
That being said there's STILL very meaningful and great Rap music out there, Lil Pump doesn't represent all of hip hop

First heard it when it came out in 2003. I was 15 and was dealing with coming to terms with a chronic illness I had developed. I was in such a deep depression because my life as I knew it was over. This song and this band quite literally saved my life. It felt like she was singing this for me and for the pain I was in. It’s still special to me to this day.

I'm 24 and have struggled with depression since early childhood because of abuse and trauma I experienced growing up throughout my life. Evanescence, Simple Plan, and Linkin Park, as well as other similar bands, got me through those times. I still listen to these bands because of the fact that they let me feel things when I was numb. I recommend listening to "Never Lose Your Flames" by Issues (the acoustic or original is fine), it gets me through so much, it's very motivational and one of my absolute favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. Love your videos Billy!

I think it was probably the first rock song that I liked and gave me a new perspective on the rock genre, I grew up in a house where all that was played was bubblegum pop music. And the only rock music I’d ever heard before that was rap rock stuff like Limp Bizkit which wasn’t my thing at all. I’d never heard any classic rock before, hard as it is to believe, but up until Evanescence I believed that rock music all had rap in it so I didn’t pay attention. This song changed that because then I started listening to classic rock and now rock / metal is my favourite genre. So thanks Evanescence, I owe you one.

It was the lowest of lows I remember- going through life - numb and empty and Depersonalized from everything and everyone. I truly felt like a ghost or a shell of a human and it scares me to think back on that time - so young And feeling that way. But - here I am now at 26; stable and calm and watching your video! I was in the place she's at in the song too💔😭🤦🙏😔😢🥀
But then again, I've been through ALOT if not 99% of what ALL of her music talks about... so I've sang it with her with a true conviction of that pain 🥀💔

Amy Lee is the GOAT, she's gorgeous and so is her voice, she's classically trained on piano and I believe she has experience with Opera singing.

Evanescence is THAT BAND! I knew the song was dark when it first came out much like how I knew a lot of Linkin Park's songs were dark, but I still listened because they are amazing. Amy is amazing. There are so many songs by them that I want to request, but I'll start with "New Way To Bleed" there's no music video for it, but it's still amazing.

Oh, the nostalgia. I remember when this single and MV came out, then the album dropped. Christian book stores had this album. Amy Lee and crew found out, and did a press release that they are NOT a Christian band, requesting that all their stuff be pulled from religious stores.

    5:05 😂😂😂😂😂
The story of me and the Jagged Little Pill album😂 I had no idea what it all meant at the time, but I think I just liked how Alanis Morrisette was so unapologetically loud and angsty. Perhaps there was an unconcious connection because I felt extra pressure to be quiet and well behaved as a kid. I came to appreciate the album waaay later on, lyrically, as an adult.

Since someone else posted other suggested songs of theirs, you should also do "Lacrymosa" (which samples Mozart's famous classical music "Lacrimosa) and "Missing". Oh also "Tourniquet" and "Imaginary", but if you do those 2, find a video that plays both back to back because it transitions from one to the other and that's how I like to listen to it lol...

Chris Daughtry sang this as Judas in a tv special by Tyler Perry called the passion. It was the story of the passion of Christ and the stars sang modern songs.

The first time I heard this song, I was in middle school (so around 11-13 in case you go by a different grade system). I was in a dark place mentally so this song spoke to me. You should check out her song Last Song I'm Wasting On You.

I first started listening to this song when I was in Jr. High. I was in a pretty dark place. I guess you can say this song, with a couple more, defined my teenage years. This song means a lot to me and I still listen to it when I'm having a hard time.

I was 12 when this song came out so I was in the same boat, I would just sing along when it was on the radio. And then when i saw the video I got the more depressing vibe of the song which I couldn't relate to but I loved this song!
