- KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs and Commissioner Courtney Durrett are once again going head-to-head in sports for National Diabetes Awareness Month. This time the friendly competition will test their skills at golf as the duo drives awareness of the chronic health condition.
The athletes are preparing for their match, including some unconventional practice techniques inspired by the mayor's “favorite athlete, Happy Gilmore.”
The competition will takes place in November at Topgolf, 11400 Outlet Dr., Farragut, Tenn.
“In 2020, my daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Every November since, I’ve challenged Mayor Jacobs to a sports competition for National Diabetes Awareness Month,” said Durrett.
The annual competitions emphasize the importance of healthy habits and physical activity in living with diabetes.
“More than 34 million Americans have diabetes, and one-in-five don’t even know it. That includes adults and children,” said Mayor Jacobs, who noted his father has diabetes.
Jacobs and Durrett are engaging in some good-natured jawing ahead of their golf showdown.
“I haven’t picked up a golf club in 10 years, but I always know how to beat Mayor Jacobs. I beat him at pickleball last year. I beat him at basketball [in 2020]. Now I’m going to beat him at golf,” boasted Durrett. “We talk trash for fun, but this really is for a good cause.”
Jacobs countered Durrett’s claim that she “always” wins, pointing out he won at the batting cages in 2021.
