After spending most of my life in the education system - first through mandatory elementary, middle school, high school, and then through four years of Law School, two years taking a master's, and then studying at a post-graduate level, you can say I've been spending a lot of time getting used to studying, and one thing I wanted to shed some light on are the things that, independently of the time you spend in school or college, you will never learn from your teachers or the education system in itself.

And it’s funny because I am too but that 4-5 hours still feels like it’s too much. I’m only in my first year of running start. This week was my third week. I’m already staying up super late and feeling like I need to stay up longer and do more. It’s a habit im trying to break because at a certain point of stress and exhaustion, as anyone would, i break down and my depression gets very bad it’s just hard to sleep or take breaks when i feel like I literally cannot because there’s not enough hours in the day

I would add selecting friends and lovers, self defense skills, how to be good alone, managing a toxic workplace, how to say no, basic cooking skills, simple negotiations, beginning gardening and maybe a bit of simple sewing. None of these would be complicated just enough to give you the confidence to try these things on your own.

I've been saying for a long time that I think real life financing, budgeting, household management and life skills should be taught in our schools. It's sad that we send 16 year old out into the world with not a fraction of knowledge they need to live day to day lives and to know their rights.

But they also lived paycheck to paycheck and I didn't want to live that way my whole life. Are schools not teaching initiative anymore?

I feel like some kind of "work life balance" or "avoiding burn out" or some kind of mental health protection class offered at a high school level to avoid the impending burn out or worse mental break down. I had my first mental breakdown my freshman year of college.

    • @corycianangel6321

It's much harder to apply basic psychology if you're in a health-related course. You're very much aware of what's happening to you and to others, but pressure from other subjects can prevent you from applying it to yourself. Even if psychology is included in the curriculum.

@@corycianangel6321 dude that's so accurate. I'd say especially if psychology is in your curriculum because then the narrative is "as long as I'm not hitting this extreme then I'm coping well" not realizing that we are slowly getting toward the"extreme"

Kat Hall I've observed so many of my classmates talking about mental breakdowns during their pre-med and now as medical students. At the same time, they have to look happy and active on many fronts. Even I experienced mental breakdowns that's unfortunately seen in public, unlike them. That's why I didn't want to pursue medicine, it's more intense and demanding that putting a front is a way to keep one's own sanity.

I was 16 years old when I got admitted into the university. I have always been a caged child and I didn't go anywhere by myself. When it was time to head to uni, I was scared because I knew I would be alone and have to do things myself and be an "adult". I found it hard to navigate coz I had book smarts but no street smarts. I had a 1.43 gpa in the 1st semester. When I got back home during the holiday, my parents expected me to just know what to do in the real world after being caged all my life and only spending 3-4 months outside of home. I'm 17 years old now in my second year. I'm trying my best and I know that I still have a lot to learn.

    • @ocean_princess

Wow, that’s amazing (the fact that you got into university 2 years prior than the average teenager). And about the difficulty of being amongst people and having to do things for yourself - that’s very relatable. I was never much of a “people person”, and my parents are not exactly those type of people either, so for most of my life, I was by myself. For the past year I was homeschooled, and then returning to school 2 weeks ago, I found it extremely difficult. You know, the fact of waking up, being somewhere at a certain time, socializing with people that I had little to no interest in. My grades dropped tremendously too, and that lowered my self-esteem even more. I’m smart, and getting perfect grades was never the problem for me, but talking to others was. It was probably more than just coming back to an unexpected amount of tests - it was the fact that I was so used to being alone, that I forgot how to live, how to act, and just how to *be* among society. But I think, that it’s just a matter of time. We’re humans and we’re able to adapt. I believe that you will find a person that you’re comfortable with, someone that matches your energy, you’ll get the grades that you want and that you’ll finally be able to set loose after being “held captive” for so long. Good luck, you can do this!💗

Also, i’m not sure if you’ve watched Gilmore Girls, but in a way, your (and my own) situation reminds me of Rory…
She was booksmart, and technically lived in this beautifully-made cage with her mother and rich grandparents by her side. When she got into Yale, it was just a matter of luck of coping, but when she went out into the real world, she was afraid and just couldn’t socialize because she just wasn’t used to it. She took criticism too close to heart, and just couldn’t take it.
But i’m sure that we’re not like Rory, and that we’ll be able to do this!
Btw, just out of interest, what university did you get into (it’s okay if you’re not comfortable with saying so)?

Resting and knowing your limits/boundaries is so important. I dropped out of grad school during the final year of my masters. I barely remember anything from those classes because my mental health was so poor trying to juggle classes and a full time job that I retained next to nothing. I also realized that I didn’t really care to get my masters, I just felt like I had to. 1.5 years later, and my mental health has significantly improved and I never once regretted my decision. You don’t have to work one job or career for 40 years, that’s a very depressive thought that life is stagnant, I literally got depressed from this when I was 20 because I thought my life will always be the same. I‘m currently an artist and maybe I will do that forever but maybe I‘m going to be an author, a café owner, a librarian whatever in 10 years life is forever changing and surprises you around every corner. Never settle for something that you are not passionate about it’s never worth it. Always follow what you love life is so much more than work.

Thank you for making this video. I've been saying for years that we don't learn the essentials for living in the real world in school. If I can add one thing it would be added to the first point. How to deal with burnout and depression. My graduation project was all about a buddy system for people who struggled during their education. I found that a lot of people get burnouts and also depression. I've even been notified that someone had taken their own life in their first year. So yeah, learning how to deal with depression is just as important as a burnout.

What about becoming a physician? A lot of people dream about helping the community by practicing medicine. I know it’s not for everyone but I have a couple of friends who have pursued the dream of saving lives medically. That takes dedication and a lot of formal education.

It's the same principle -- if YOUR definition of success is becoming a physician to help the community by practicing medicine, definitely go for it :) Once again - it's all relative.

Children should, at a minimum, understand their options for investing. They need to know about stocks, mutual funds, and real estate before a salesman explains these concepts to them. Refer children to point #2. They should understand the importance of investing early on.

Obrigado Mariana pelos teus excelentes vídeos...sempre me aperfeiçoei contigo, ainda andavas tu a tirar Direito! E lembrem-se com fé e esperança em Jesus, tudo se consegue resolver. Ele sabe o melhor para nós!

There are some yt videos on it if you would like to learn more😊 I've been kind of struggling lately with what I want to learn and teach myself. So this video is so helpful because I would like to know these things now. Tysm

I started university at 14 and finished my BSc in a STEM field at 19 after taking an extra year to take fun non-STEM electives. My other friends who went to normal high schools and attended/finished university at a "normal" age definitely were not taught these things in their schools and are usually ask me for advice. I am happy to give it always, but it is so sad to see that this is the type of everyday person that American schools are creating now. My generation needs serious help, and your videos are a good supplement.

i love how you talk about learning about financial literacy, Most of us don't understand much in the beginning, If your job isn't in finance make yourself read a little about it each week. Google terms you don't understand. Don't beat yourself up over not understanding everything right away. Overtime you will get it. I like to think of it at taking sips of information on a regular basis. But try to really learn how to invest for retirement and start by your late twenties at the latest. Everybody can retire but you have to take control of your finances and make it a goal early in life. And don't try to retire too early, A healthy work/life balance keeps people connected with the world.

I think people need to take a ton of extracurriculars growing up too. One or two a year, forcing them to try new things. Growing up we didn't have the money to do any outside of school. And my school never had art or music so that was a huge part of my identity that was unexplored until I was well into adulthood. I wish I had been exposed to that sooner. If you don't try things out when you're young you could (like me) grow up with a ton of identity issues. It just makes everything so much harder & you won't be happy.
With that said, I also know people who were overbooked. Had extraccurrculars every day after school & on weekends, as well as working. They were never able to have a proper social life because of it.

Burnout is such a real thing, I remember the last 2 years of my Uni I didn't get a single day off. I studied during the weekdays at Uni and worked (at times) 3 part time jobs. Even during the summer I took on unpaid internships and continued my part times. Safe to say my final year didn't go so well, and my results dipped down.

The first point is so true... I've been raised by an overworking father that valued money a lot, and a academic oriented mother that made me feel like having a "respectable" degree was the only thing that would make me happy. Currently I'm in college, and to this day I still feel like I'm wasting my time if I'm not doing something "productive". It sounds dumb, but learning how to rest is not the easiest thing to archieve.

I remember teachers saying that we have to do more than our best which is ridiculous, it damages mental health, physical health (from sitting all day), and relationships. Did you know someone in HARVARD got around 120 on their S.A.T. and still got in. While you should do your best don't sacrifice your health. It's not worth it in the long run.
