- Good Morning RUclips World. I'm creating this video because I was unable to find any video's on RUclips on how to setup this AO Smith Controller. Thought I would contribute to the knowledge base. I'm sure there are more people are confused by the user manual. This applies to any of their water softeners that use their current controller. Pasting the models that I found, but there are probably other models this applies to. Hope this helps.

Thanks for making this video. Why AO Smith isn’t sharing these few small, but important tips is beyond me.
I just bought 1 from AO Smith and I shouldn't. No tutorial videos available as for other WS makers. If I can, I would return it
Thanks so much for posting this video. I had a new water softener installed this week and I’ve never had one before. I woke up this morning to horrible coffee and my daughter complaining about salty water coming from the refrigerator water dispenser. I had been trying to set the hardness level to an acceptable setting and thought I had screwed it up. The manual is almost useless. After finding your video and learning how to navigate through the settings, I discovered the time was off by several hours and regeneration was set for Demand. Hopefully, I won’t be waking up to salty coffee again.
Happy to hear my video was useful. Cheers😎
It’s always the videos with no views so easy so fast so understandable. Thank you so much
Thanks for the video! What I did is route a separate water line after it goes through the filter to my kitchen. This separate line of cold water DOES NOT go through the softener. This line is for our drinking water. I have an on the counter top water filter that I back wash once a week. We have had this make of filter for 38 years is called a Hurley III. It's our third one. Takes out lead and 99.9 % of all contaminates. Water tastes great!
Your video was so helpful. The instructions Manuel should explain what each of the settings actually do. For new users we don’t know what they do.
This was a huge help. Thank you. I agree, the user manuel instructions are very vague. I even shared this with my plumber who installed my unit.
Wow, if only I had watched this video a year ago!! So helpful, thank you
Thank you so much was very helpful. We had a problem with it turning on during the day getting salt and water. Thanks again.
I think all AO Smith needs to do is put a link to your video! Thank you.
Thanks for the video. I missed it in the manual but it is on page 15 didn’t see that till I started reading the comments.
Thank you so much for this video It was a BIG help...
Thank you! This was just what I needed to set up controller. AO Smith are you listening?
Great info, I was ready to throw it away. Hope this works 👍
Thanks for the info... Hard to find anything about them on here. Any luck with how to clean these?
Thank you so much I've been looking for this! Yes AO smith needs better set up instructions for sure.
Do you happen to know where I can find that PowerPoint ?
Not easy to find, but here is the link: www.powerequipmentdirect.com/manuals/d28b7fe7f18b637aba721e09d0422dfa.pdf
@@RandomsHouse thank you for taking the time to dig it up!
Thankyou for making this video the manual is absolute garbage and calling the so called support team was a waste of time. I am sure this softener is the biggest pile of garbage I have ever owned
Thanks. I am planning on buying the 450T. Can you tell me whether the unit will continue keeping the correct time if power is lost? Would be good if it has some sore of battery backup for when power goes out.
salty water is a bypass valve rinse issue. In Regen, the bypass valve switches to BYPASS softening while in regen mode. Under no circumstances should salt get into your water lines. Your rinse cycle should purge all brine from the resin tank.
I know this video was made a year ago but I just installed one recently and the controller settings are on page 15 which is step 10 in manual
I can't remember where I saw this but regarding hardness, does 025 mean 250 hardness? My water hardness is bad, 450 according to my water test strip. Can I assume a setting for 045? I may have to call A.O. Smith as even the touch screen instructions aren't clear on this. Thanks for the video.
Awesome information. Ty
Any chance you know why my gallons remaining numbers want move?? Been saying that for a whole day and I have washed several loads of cloths
Very Helpful
Thanks for the video!!🤙🏾
U r a savior
Thank you!!!
Okay my softner is making my water to slimy. I have it on 7 hardness. How do I adjust it. I am so frustrated
Having a whole lot of trouble understanding why you get salt water in your faucets during regeneration when it goes into by-pass mode during regeneration
Does yours Beep after every Regen? I don't know why mine does and i have to tap the screen to stop beeping.
Aren’t you able to drain the backwash from regen so it doesn’t go back through your home?
I don't know anything about that.
The main issue should really be that a water softener does not soften the water during regen due to the fact that the resin tank is being rinsed during that time and isn’t operating normally. Water softeners are switched to bypass mode during regeneration, so water can still be used, but will not actually be run through the system. But what is being shown in this video should fix any issues of water quality during a regen cycle. I have the same system, just the 40,000 grain version, and I have experienced similar issues during regen in demand mode. What happened was that hard water ran through my shower. The backwash shouldn’t be recycled through your system, but just drained through the drain tube. Any water quality issues experienced during regen SHOULD just be hard water being bypassed during the cycle.
@@craven364 your commentary is exactly correct. There is no way for salt to get into the supply lines to the house during regeneration unless the control valve is malfunctioning or leaking internally.
@@byronmill I'm on my 2nd 450T unit (after a full warranty replacement) and during regen the water is always salty in the house. I thought my first unit had major issues as I had several parts changed out multiple times over just 3 years. This brand new unit now does the exact same thing. Except it doesn't connect to wifi now. FML. I'm so over this product. Calling now again to get another new controller.
It on page 15 setting the controller.
What does override do ?
Thanks
You are misunderstanding the function of the water softener during regeneration. You do not get salt in the water if it's regenerating during the day or you're using water during the regeneration cycle. When the softener is in the regeneration cycle it bypasses the water used completely around the softener, therefore there is no way for salt to get into the water supply, unless the control head is malfunctioning or leaking internally. The only thing that is happening is that any water used during the regeneration cycle is going to be unsoftened.
ao smith 450t is real rubbish.
