The joke hit hard 😂😂😂
WOW!!! That color was a perfect choice!!!!
I sprayed a lot of cars, vans, and motorcycles (etc.) back in the day, so I feel thoroughly qualified to tell ya: Brad, you're an ace painter!!! That's gorgeous, man.
Thanks Seth! Much appreciated.
Great video , Brad !! Love the color on that body !! Great job !!!
Thanks Mike!
That color is awesome. The finished product was great. Great job Brad! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Wallace. Glad you like it!
Oh hell yeah. Love the color.
Thanks man
I like that you have a wide variety of subjects, covering all sorts of stuff. This nitro was exactly what I had been thinking about how to do. Thank you for the information.
Glad I could help.
Looks great! I’m about to start my first refinish project. I’ve been studying all your relevant videos and they have been incredibly helpful. Thanks!
Glad I could help
Haha love that joke, like the way you snuck it in there. Looks killer, very inspiring paint job! Your videos are a huge help too, gonna be trying my own nitro job soon and I'll definitely be using your links! Cheers
Thanks Seanie!
Looks great man!, it's The Green Bastard from parts unknown lol
Cool color. Very good shine you achieved there.
Thanks Brian
When I paint and clear I'll wear a 3M respirator with P100 filters. While not the canister type of filters they do work for me and I never smell the fumes though it. Also wear protective goggles if using one of these respirators rather than a full face shield. And ALWAYS work in a well ventilated area.
Nice result!
Thank you
As you know I love a nitrocellulose finish just because its super simple and most of the time doesn't give you any problems ( misting because humidity is a pain) and I love candy finish looks stunning. Great job as always mate.
Thanks Stu. Glad you like it.
@@BradAngove you know me mate all for tradition! Well now and then! Keep it up brother 😜
Awesome 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I'm glad somebody ELSE is paying for that color! Puke! But still love your work, Brad.
Haha thanks Kolin. It’s got a pretty cool shine to it in the sunlight, but mojito green certainly isn’t for everyone.
Nice Brad ✌
LOVE using the air gun to clean the sandpaper.
My favorite way to do it
Looks good.
Thank you
120 mesh garnet. Spoken like someone who uses a waterjet. Or a blast cabinet. Or both.
That finish looks awesome! Nice work as always.
Thanks. And yeah... it’s both.
Nice work!
Thank you
Hey Brad.. great video as always. The lime green puts me in mind of a Steve Via or maybe CeeCee Deville. Either way, I'm diggin it
Thanks Adam
I appreciate all the sanding details. ,my builds finally look decent but man rattle cans are a real pain.,the spar urethane I accidentally discovered is an awsome can clear coat. ...
Glad to hear it!
Looks great!👍😎🎸🎶
Thanks man.
@@BradAngove yep!🙂
THAT joke made me rewind and think about getting a polisher
I've been watching your tutorials for around an hour now. It's time for sleep. Yesterday I was dreaming about cabinet making.
Today I expect spraying some paint
or your biceps
It's 50/50
What’s the verdict?
@@BradAngove In terms of getting polishing device I'll probably get one unless it's possible to polish with angle grinder
Speaking of my dreams from that day, sadly there was no painting or your biceps. Just my dog smashing windows with his butt
Some people believe dreams have meaning... I’ll leave it at that haha.
An angle grinder is way too fast for polishing clear. You would be better off with a pad on a random orbital sander.
Cool color, reminds me of the nick slime. I do think Nitro finished were a mistake to be made in the first place. Poly is where the best is at
nowadays.
They each have their benefits. I’m generally fond of poly as well.
Really! That colour makes me go to the toilet over and over again... The Dutch masters are turning around into their grave! But; the customer is always right, isn't it? Rob
I like the color
I have sprayed quite a few bike tanks, frames and panels, prepped dozens of cars, I have sprayed a few guitars too, I think unless you have a good set up, good paint and a passion for doing all the prep etc. I'd rather let someone else do the slog, I love raw wood and the beauty of the grain so I am more into the the grain filling side and polish, 90% of instruments I make are oiled and shellac, I am also impatient with paint drying , good job on that guitar it looks flawless and loving that green!
Thanks Mark. You like to go with shellac overtop of about oiled finish?
*an oil finish
@@BradAngove 🤣🤣🤣🤣 you have been spending too much time with with texas "married with" toast lol 😂😂😂 "oil finishes" and "shellac finishes" 🙄🙄🙄
@@BradAngove Chris and the other guy 😉
How do you feel about using sanding sponges I like using them because when they fill up with sanding dust I can just soak them in water or spray water on them then get right back into sanding and they seem to last longer that way also I like that they're soft enough to sand rounded edges and contours without really reshaping the wood
I am with you on using the sponge type pads.I use the 3M pads, they are expensive but work great and I keep using them for other things. I have clean older ones in guitar cases to clean my guitar necks and keep them feeling clean and fast.
I like the sponge backed paper. I don’t use a lot of sanding sponges themselves except for contour work because I’m concerned about how flat they are, but for larger projects that don’t need a mirror finish I certainly use them.
Looks great!!!
I've been experimenting with using Mixol tints in lacquer to create opaque colors. Should I tint the vinyl sealer white and then do a color coat on top? Or just spray sealer, and then start color coats?
Your videos have been a lot of help!!
If you can tint the sealer that will make it easier to reach full opacity.
clean thorough between each layer, otherwise you will scratch it with the larger grits
Nice green actually. Wonder how it would look with the pickguard and neck. Nice idea for the gold effect.
Hard to take pics of pearl/metallics, but you can see a few pics of it put together here... www.strat-talk.com/threads/mojito-green-w-gold-pearl-nitro-re-finish.552534/
@@nathansheppard4674 Nice, unique guitar. No point in doing what's been done a million times before.
@@nathansheppard4674 damn that’s disappointing. I thought this would look amazing with an amber maple neck, white pick guard and those eggshell accessory plastics. Paint is beautiful though
@@liamwagner9160 Lol, it's a polarizing guitar. The guitar had the black pick-ups when I bought it which worked with the original paint but it's got original 57/62 pickups on there now which are white. Never been a maple fretboard fan although I now have a tele with one and starting to like it, although I doubt I'll change the neck on the strat.
Awesome paint job - as ever.
You used to use Maguires compound and polish way back, did you stop using it for a particular reason?
No, I still like meguiars.
Great vid as always. One question though, how long do you leave it between finish coating and polish? There seems to be anywhere between straight away and leave it for 6 weeks on the net!
I left it 3 or 4 weeks.
Killer looking, as always!
I'm having a real hard time finding the right color nitro, and I'm wondering if regular spray lacquer can be used effectively. From a spray can.
Regular lacquer works fine as long as you’re not spraying over a different compound.
@@BradAngove awesome thanks!
I'm filling in mahogany body with colortone grain filler (from stewmac), sealing with colortone vinyl sealer, and then white lacquer + clear gloss lacquer, so I think it'll be good.
I did check Solo, Mohawk & Oxford for plain white nitro first. I've learned tons from you, so thanks for all the great informational tutorials!!! If I decide to post a video I'll be sure to reference your channel and maybe even drop a link.
Where can you get nitrocellulose paint mixed in canada?
Hey man - if I was thinking of doing a finish where the edges of a telecaster body have a white line while the rest of the body is all orange, would I do a total base coat of white, wait for it to dry and cover my "seam" with painters tape, and then spray the rest of the body orange over top of the white? Great, informative video. Also makes you realize that nitro coats aren't the insane labour intensive processes that guitar companies want us to think they are!!
Yes, that’s probably the easiest way to get that finish.
And no, charging extra for nitro has always been a bit silly.
I never see it in the videos so I'll ask. What do u use for fine sanding and polishing the sides/edges or the guitar???
The same stuff as the front except smaller pads. However, it’s rarely actually necessary to sand and polish the sides if you coat them correctly because they’re so small.
When sanding the Sealer before applying the colour (I use approximately 4 coats), do you sand to remove all the shiny spots from the sealer to make the finish dull/matte feel and then you move on to the color coat? Or you just removing rough spots with a very light sanding and make it smooth to the touch?
I usually sand for completely level with no shiny spots before moving on to color, especially if I’m working with a metallic like this.
Hey Brad. About to refin one of my Jazz basses and doing something nearly identical to this. So I was super geeked when part 1 came up in my feed. Curious what your ratio of gold powder to lacquer was? I haven’t had a chance to work with ghost pearl before but I know there’s a sweet spot between too little and too much.
It looked pretty gentle to me, but I didn’t mix this. The client had a local paint shop do it for him and test it. Then he gave it to me.
@@BradAngove ah ok. I misinterpreted it as he just gave you the green. Finish looks awesome, man. Thanks for putting this stuff out there!
Ugh! Those hands!
What about them?
@@BradAngove Soooooo strong!!! (Iflirt) lol
love your videos, where can I get, and who makes, opaque lacquer? is it sold at auto paint stores? the auto body supply guys just want the paint code and sell some version of poly, need to mix my colors trial and error. areosols not a help.
SECOND ? I can see white sanding before the color coat, also between colored coats, but I thought that the clear coats must be applied over an unmolested unsanded color coat. For example; could I wet sand the fully color coated serface to 600 say and then start with clear nitro? My last yellow to dark brown sun burst worked very well, but again I ended up using areosol, not bulk custom blended product, sealer well applied I have on occasion wiped away the colored area with a rag and thinner.
I get my opaque nitro lacquer from oxford supply. I’ve done some videos on them.
Paint always shows white marks when sanded. That is fine. It goes away when coated over. Sanding between coats is often a good idea.
Wax and grease remover like prepsol. Any issue using it between base and top coat? I think it has kerosene or similar in it and have had anecdotal comments that it should not be used after base coating...
I haven’t had any concerns with it
Skillfully sanded by the jack hand of a true artisan. Can it really get any more personalized than that? Lol
It came out really nice and I’m looking forward to how the rest comes together. The things people do with those translucent finishes is just insane and I know you know that and just have to be patient for you to whip your stencils out and go full abstract expressionist on one. Lol
Might have to do a crazy one for myself one of these days. And btw, I’m ambidextrous... for sanding...
What’s the best way to get a custom color lacquer like this customer did? Do you have advice on how to find someone to match a specific color in nitro lacquer? I’m in the US. Thanks!
This guy just went to a local paint shop that carries lacquer.
That's a really nice shop, is that your main shop? I'm curious about a couple of things...1. Why do you dry sand and deal with the paper clogging, is wet sanding bad for that kind of paint or something? 2. How do you polish in the horn area with those types of polishers? I'm considering buying a buffing wheel type polisher but honestly, they kind of scare me in terms of their finish ruining potential (at least in my hands). I also need to debunk one of your theories.....I rub things a lot and I am not particularly strong.
That’s the shop I used to work at full time. Now I just do project work there.
I dry sand because water getting into the lacquer can crack it and if it gets into the wood it can cause expansion that can also crack the lacquer.
I don’t sand or polish in the horn areas. I just make sure I spray enough paint in there to get it to lay out smooth. If I had to polish in there I would do it by hand.
Curious to know how the cavities all lost their green paint toward the end. They started out green, before the body had color. Tape?
Yes, they were taped off.
are you mixing the color into the lacquer with something like mixol or are you just spraying paint for the first coat
It’s color mixed into clear lacquer to create the paint. I’m just not the one who mixed this particular one.
Hey there! Good afternoon, normally, how much do you charge for this type of job?
It depends on the paint type, and I don’t do many commissions anymore. You can email me at brad.angove@gmail.com if you want a quote. Please put quote in the re line; I don’t answer painting questions via email.
Do you do commissions? And if you do where do I even go to try to contact you?
I do some, but I have a few that I need to get through before I can take any more on. Easiest way to contact me is through the Facebook or Instagram links in the description.
About to try nitro for the first time, but I'm curious about the curing process. Do you wait the 4-6 weeks and then go to polish/buff? Or can you start polishing/buffing sooner?
Yes, I generally wait 4 weeks before the sanding and polishing on nitro. Sometimes two weeks if it’s warm out and I’m using Mohawk lacquer, which seems to pass the fingernail test faster.
👍✌😎
There is a copycat out there, someone called Brett ManGod! Lol
That guy is so damn funny.
Damn not early
No need to be early. You made it!
Brad, Did you do any light sanding on the color coat before you went to the clearcoats.
Only before adding the pearl. Not before clear. This is nitrocellulose lacquer, so it wasn’t needed. And it would have messed with the metallic.
@@BradAngove So Brad, what you are saying is that go right to the clearcoat without sanding my color at all. The back of the guitar is black, and the top is red with a bit of Mica mixed in. Or would you recommend I mix the Mica powder (Eye Candy) in the clearcoat separately. I built a Billy Bo guitar. With all these conversations you'd think I would have been done by now. I just went back to work substitute teaching, so I put the project on hold. Last year I had a double transplant of my liver and kidney, so everything in my life is mixed in between procedures and doctor appointments. But praise God I'm doing great.
@bluesbubba7429 are you using nitrocellulose lacquer? If so then you don’t have to sand before your clear coat. It’s good to flat sand but if you can candy and mica then sanding can mess with it.
Glad to hear you’re doing well.
@@BradAngove Thanks Brad I will follow suit.
As long as the color coat isn't screwed up before the clear coat. By the way, the razor in the dowel technique is great, then a saw the guy at Texas Toast do the same thing.
@bluesbubba7429 nice. Those guys know their stuff.
Candy paint is the worst, literally bane of my existence lol
None of these were candy per se.
is that green called key lime?
It looks a lot like a color called key lime actually.
It was technically mojito green but you know the way it is with colour's, one company's mojito green is another company's key lime green.
I think the key lime may have been the acrylic that I was looking at for this.
If you’re used to rubbing vigorously in a circular motion, you’re probably doing it wrong.
The guitar is looking great BTW
Any females want to respond to this comment?..
@@BradAngove you are correct...I should have specified “to all the males out there...”
To all the women in the audience, I humbly beg for forgiveness.
Hahaha I was just kidding man.

I'm serious lol. Pm me on here or find me on Facebook if you're interested in talking about it.
I do take some commission work, but I have a backlog at the moment so I’m not taking on anything new until I’m able to work through that.
@@BradAngove No sweat dude. Let me know if you get to a point you are able to and we can work something out. Peace!!!
Great vid, useful info, but this kitchen utensil color... who's the client - Pee Wee Herman?
