- In this video we are doing a nice opaque burst finish in white and daphne blue with nitrocellulose lacquer. This is being done mostly with spray cans, and we are using the vintage lacquers from Oxford Supply. This finish is looking pretty good so far. This is a cool project and I'm excited to get it finished off.

I liked the multiple angles on video. Made it easier to see the details of what you were doing.

Gonna add to the positive pile. The different angles let’s us see things with differing angles of light, so a shadow in one shot is gone in the other. It’s a good approach at times. The voice over is also a good approach. 👍

The low angle was helpful for me in seeing how much of the spray wasn't hitting the guitar body, when starting the burst

Wow I have a lot to lean. Great info. I painted my first guitar sunburst... with cans ... as documented on my channel not without problems. So glad to hear that cans is an acceptable way to do a burst. Thanks again for sharing 👍🏼

I built one with the 'H + P-90' setup a couple years back. It sounded amazing, but the hard part was the balance across the tone, vol and 3-way. I only had 1tone 1vol so maybe you'll be alright there, but I had to solder in a cap (?or maybe it was a resistor, can't remember) that would cut the 500k pots lead in 1/2 going to the P-90. It kinda sounded blown out without it, but made all the difference with the hack.

I was just thinking, before you said it, what a nice fan that can sprayed. Would be nice to have the cone shaped one as well, although a nice sprayer would be a better way to go. Looking great!

You should do more vids with spray guns! In any case, I need some tips for setting up a diy booth for spraying nitro. Affordable explosion proof fans, etc. And some more info on positive pressure in a booth? Thanks man. Been watching your channel for a while. Has helped me a lot. Keep it up

Im a big spray can junkie. I like the east and portability. I guess it sprouts from the street art days. I like how you make these spray can videos. A lot of times thats all people have to use. Great burst mate you made it look simple to do but its definitely not easy with a can or a gun! Great job mate looks class. Nothing better than nitrocellulose as its very easy to use and with it melting into itself. Just go slow 🐌

About how long did the touchup on the white take you? That's where I had my problems from the overspray. the angle from below is actually helpful. you can see the coverage your getting from the coats your applying. That paint seems really nice. Great video my friend.

Yes, there’s no reason why this shouldn’t be doable with duplicolor.
Brad I’m painting a strat body. The texture is a bit Sandy. Should I sand it before applying final color coat?

Brad I have a question for you. I have a set of cabinets I will be refinishing this winter. The existing lacquer is softening quite a bit around pulls, etc. Pretty gummy. I am assuming it is a nitrocellulose. I am planning to clean well and relacquer. Any tips or pointers?
The key for lacquer is usually to apply it in many very thin layers. Other than that, just make sure you are using an appropriate speed of solvent. I haven’t really encountered an environment where normal lacquer thinner (and perhaps a bit of retarder) won’t do.
Can you recommend a brand of nitro with as little plasticizer content as possible? Looking for something along the lines of what vintage nitro was. More brittle.Not a fan of rubbery soft finishes.
These are a pretty vintage formula. Much more brittle than the Mohawk lacquer from what I have observed. I’m not sure what other brands are similar though. I know the stuff I used to buy locally was old style formula and would crack easily. That’s was walls alive.
question... nitrocellulose lacquer.. . i got my final coat of clear looking super smooth.. it looked like a factory glass smooth..
do you still have to do the buff out with the finish compound stuff to get the surface to be hard???
mine, after a week, will take impression of what ever it's sitting on for too long..
everything sprayed in low humidity and temp was around 78 deg... thanx
No, polishing doesn’t harden it. It takes about a month to harden fully though.

No, I just screw a hook into the bottom strap button hole and hang them usually.

How do you deal with blushing/haze in the finish during application or before with spray cans?
I get a lot of blushing in my color coats. Should I keep going with the colour coats and clear coats and at the end let it cure for 4 weeks and then polish and buff all the Blush/haze?
You can’t really buff out blushing. I would either use Mohawk blush remover, or carefully try to get it out with a heat gun or hair dryer. If you have a way to dehumidify your spraying area, you should do so to help minimize blushing in future.
@@BradAngove so as soon as I can see any blushing you recommend to stop and let the body dry and then trying to remove it with heat? Any other method before I sand and start over?
Finish the coat you’re working on and then apply a bit of heat to try to evaporate out that humidity. The other method is the blush remover from Mohawk, which works well.
@@BradAngove unfortunately, the heat make bubbles in my finish since I used too much heat. But the haze/Blush is still in other spots that I managed to control the heat. There is no option to get Blush Remover to Israel, and seems like that no professional store knows what I'm talking about 😅
Great video as always. What is your expectations from a nitro clear coat? How durabel or hard it should be and what thicknes do you prefer?
I keep them fairly thin. When all is said and done they should pass the fingernail test within about a month. They won’t be hard like catalyzed finishes though.
@@BradAngove thanks Brad, I've been learning a lot from your videos. How do you do a fingernail test, do you push as hard as you can or just touching lightly? This is a very weird question but as I am trying to figure this out watching videos I do know how exactly it is done. I dont even know what to expect from which finish. Thats another frusturating point. I mean even if I put a layer of iron on the wood I can dent it if it is thin enough or if I push hard enough.
The idea is that it should be harder than your fingernail. So if you push with your fingernail, no matter how hard, your fingernail shouldn’t mark it. Your nail would bend first.
It’s different with iron. You wouldn’t leave a fingernail mark in it, you would literally dent it. Here we’re not talking hard enough to dent the wood. Just imagine you were checking if one of your nails could dent another.
Do you ever use a floating mask for feathering in your bursts?
Absolutely. I have a couple videos on that I believe.
Can you do a video on how to get a see-through job? I want my guitar dark red, but I want to see a black under coat through it...
Candy red? There are many out there. I did a video on tinting lacquer. I also did a dark candy red job in my great guitar build off video. You may find that interesting. It was the reveal video at the end of the series.

Nice. I always had a problem with the lacquers never really curing all the way. How long do you usually let it sit before level sanding and buffing?
Probably a month
You would think, but was still soft after six months, started using 2k products and no problems.
@@michaeldouglas2634 this is the problem I have been facing since I started my projects. To begin with, it is nearly impossible to define the problem. I read about people finishing their project but realising the clear coat is so soft that a towel leaves marks on the surface. This didnot hapen to me but I never get the suerface I am looking for, its always dry and cured enough after 15 days but never got hard or durable enough (east to dent with fingernail.
To be honest I dont know what it supposed to be. Maybe what I get is what I can get with nitro. Maybe I shoul apply thicker to pass the fingernail test I dont know at all:)
I as well tried brushable 2 k poly but it was tje worst, it was a soft plastic like play dough.
@@loneliboy1234 I thought maybe it was applying too many coats to fast or too thick so I tried one coat an hour. Three coats a day skipping a day in between. For a week and let it sit for a month. Still same problem. Had the towel thing happen to me as well. Even months later and still soft. The stuff seems to never really get hard. I wonder how durable the Brads lacquer finishes are. Anyway went to 2k clears and never went back. Ruined a few cool guitar paint jobs from the lacquer.

I don’t understand how you’re not getting the blue color oversprayed near the center when you’re spraying the sides/edges. I know you angle it out when doing the burst on the body, but the thin sides How did you get no overspray on the center of the body?!?
They fade in a little. That’s deliberate though.
Brad do you need to warm up these cans before spraying?
If they’re really cold you should, but I’ve never had to.

Hey Brad, Spray cans coats tend to dry faster, isn't it better to spray wetter coats to ensure that the Lacquer doesn't dry too fast and traps unwanted moisture??
Do you recommend spraying a very light coat and making it heavier in the upcoming coats?
I start with a light coat. Spray can coats really only dry faster because of paint volume. You can spray them a bit heavier to address that.
Either way, the moisture issue depends on your circumstances. I live in a dry place so I generally don’t worry about that.

@@BradAngove when I apply thin coats im getting a lot of "dusting" look. It doesn't give me a gloss shine. Do you recommend to move the spray cans closer to the piece to avoid the dust/matte effect? Seems like that there's not enough material that hits the piece. That what I think, I'll be happy to hear your opinion. I can't find the right distance so far🥱😑
That’s probably exactly the problem. Move closer and maybe a bit slower. Check out my really old video on how to get an even coat of paint with spray cans.

how will you define a coat of Sanding Sealer/Color/Clear?
Is it at least 2 passes on all sides of the piece? That's the general guide? Im ending up spraying too heavily or too light since I don't have a clew what a coat means and when Should I stop or add more. I know it depends on so many factors, but I'm trying to have a basic guide

Love your videos. Couple of minor/silly questions. Warwick is pronounced Warick everywhere. Is this one of those weird things (mostly found in the USA. Eg; caramel. Everywhere around the world its pronounced car-a-mel... just like its spelt but Americans say carmel) where its just pronounced wrong? And if your Canadian why are you talking in the old weights and measures instead of metric? The only 2 countries in the first world that don't use metric are a very small middle eastern country (can't remember the name) and the USA. As I said, a couple of silly questions but just bugged me as I was watching.... cheers and keep up the awesome content.
I probably just pronounced Warwick wrong. That one is on me.
As for the weights, in Canada we do a weird combo of the two systems. Basically we haven’t fully transitioned from a colloquial perspective. I would give you height in feet and inches, my weight in lbs, etc, but I purchase my fuel in liters, measure distance in kilometers, and use describe temperature in Celsius.
You know... just to keep things interesting.
So they're gonna sell these outside of Canada? I just bought an igloo in the Yukon to I could paint 3 days a year with this Canadian paint. Oh well.

Absolutely,positively not a fan of using spray cans for fades and bursts. Too abrupt. It looks like a spray can paint job. Love your work, but just my two cents.
They are definitely not the preferred method if you have a gun or airbrush. That’s why I went back in with the gun afterward.
