Awesome job. This video is helping me out a lot.
Brad...great channel. I use a sealer and don't worry much about wet sanding and have never had issues with water on the wood. I use very light sprays of water as well. Creates more work to do it that way but I play on the cautious side and haven't had issues. Thanks again!
It's a 2x3. Definitely cool advice! I love the Norton's Liquid Ice!
Brad, I'm planning to do my first kit build and while doing some research came across your channel. Thank you so much for the time you put into these. Your tutorials are excellent. I plan on using this method though with the spray can. Again, thanks!
Awesome, I’m glad I could help and I hope your project goes well.
Awesome result! Great work, Brad. 😎🤘
Glad you like it!
Looks amazing, and I'm especially glad after finishing all that hard work you did not decide to add a heavy relic step.
You can’t really relic a 2k polyurethane finish properly regardless.
Your videos are super informative and useful. You are very good at answering all the questions that would pop up in the viewers mind. Have watched a ton of your stuff and have learned a lot. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep the vids coming. I appreciate it.
Thank you for watching.
DAmn.. that was amazing.. thank you . cant wait to do a couple of new project guitars. I feel very confident after your instruction. Much appreciated !
Glad I could help
And again. Awesome work Brad.
Thank you kindly.
Tremendous job! I am refinishing maple drumshells and using your videos for guidance. Good stuff!
Glad I could help.
Just applied 2k clear and wow. I’ve used duplicolor clear in the past and this stuff is just way better.
Indeed - a much higher quality product.
By the way, thanks for the videos, Brad, you've been (and continue to be ) great!
Beautiful, as always!
Thank you sir
Amazing color!!
Nice work, Brad. Looks great.
Thank you! Cheers!
One way to make sure that you’re sanding the entire surface, is to spray it with a light coat of water based spot trace. That’s from my yacht painting days. It forces you to sand everything, whether you want to or not. A rigid sponge sanding block is good too. BTW, you do excellent work!
Thanks Tom. In auto painting they use something similar called a guide coat. It’s usually used for leveling off primer etc before painting.
Great video bro - you’re a genius! I just did a 1989 Rickenbacker 2030 Hamburg bass in metallic Bahama blue, with Dupli-color.... thanks to u, it turned out great 👍
Awesome! I’m glad to hear that.
thanks dude your are so kind to share your experience for us... good job
Glad I could help.
Awesome video as always !! More handy tips !!
Thanks Terry!
Just got some of metallic blue duplicolor at Advanced Auto Parts. Should come out very nice! 😊
I just wanted to let you know I used your techniques with the Norton Ice and the 3M polish with those buffing pads and I absolutely love the results! Thanks man!
Glad to hear it!
Looks great! 3M makes great products. Been using them all my life.
Ya, their polishes are always awesome.
Dude. That 2K stuff is amazing. It really does leave you a mirror finish once you wet sand and polish. Great video, Brad. Sanding does suck, though.
Indeed it does haha.
Beautiful work
Thank you
great tutorial Brad. Nice
Thanks Steve
Thanks for this. I'm starting small. I'm gonna paint the head of my guitar black to match the body.
Good stuff as always.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice.....no surprise though. ...I have learned alot from you and applied the wipe on poly with 1500 grit sandpaper on my tele and I have to tell you came out beautiful. ..it actually changes color in different light...natural lite in morning then a brownish red in evening....thanx
Sounds really cool
The sand and polish is my favourite part 👀. I's nice to hear someone who knows what they're talking about. There's so much bad advice around painting and finishing in general. Watch that mic lol. I always use water. No need to make things wet enough that water is running into holes, and I hate dust everywhere (I guess I prefer mud everywhere 😂). Right edges. Paint pools on flats, so it creeps away from edges. On top of that, edges are naturally going to get a lot more pressure from sanding than distributed pressure over flat areas.
Ya, I hear way too many people saying they have sanded through their finishes and it’s almost always on edges unfortunately.
Excellent work, Brad. This is also a great demonstration of why auto detailers who do paint correction are well-paid.
Color fits the shirt. Thanks for sharing your contents...
Gotta love costco t-shirts haha.
Shoutout from TAT Express out of Hutchins, TX
Great job thanks
Looks incredible! Hope mine turns out as nice!👍😎🎸🎶
I’m sure yours will turn out awesome.
I appreciate the video thanks bud nice job
Thank you
Keep up to great work on the videos
Thanks, will do!
thanks for the video,bro.. Definitely need a respirator with that stuff!!
No kidding
That's way shinier than the blowtorch and spray-can o'shellac 'method' I usually employ.👍😁
Very nice.
Not that that method isn't fun though, right?
I just finished applying the 2k clear..... Wow, I can't believe it, what a great product..... and cost effective too. Brad thank you for your videos and bringing this product to my attention.
Cheers David. Glad I could help.
I just recently switched from 3M to Eagle Abrasives sandpaper. Eagle dry sands better than most papers perform wet. It's expensive but has saved me a lot of time when leveling clear coats.
Good to know. Thank you.
I use a small amount of dishwasher liquid and water when rubbing. Works a treat.
So do I stops it clogging
YES! Soap dramatically increases abrasive life.
Great job. I am super shocked at incredible this came out. Especially being from a spray can of paint. The unfortunate part is most of us don't have a compressor and paint booth to do clear or even paint. Dust particles are a serious pain.
If you use the spraymax 2K stuff that I was talking about from the other video I referred to, you won't need a compressor. I will be posting a video shortly about how to reduce dust in your paint jobs.
Hi Brad, I know you read your messages and you don't have to respond but I wanted to say to you THANK YOU ! 2k is the best clear ever for amateur painters, The results on my bass were awesome and didn't even polished it, I left it as is and it perfect(near perfect but Budget wise it wise perfect). I follow every steps of your video and I did my way for one step and it was a pain in the ass, I filled ash wood with Varathane floor varnish and it took me like 20 coats and in some place it wasn't filled enough. But the last step is the best, and that product is a kick ass product(you should have some cash reward) from spray max. All in all, I did a pro job for around 175 $ canadian. If any viewers have questions you can ask me too lol, I've watch all videos and I still have my sheets that I handwrote for number of coats and drying times for each steps(sealing-priming-painting-Clearing). You are a fucking cool guy to share your knowledge for free on youtube !!! thanks
Thanks Bruce. I’m glad your project turned out well.
Brad...It looks like Mr. Toast has called you out. I’m sure you have seen his response to your trash talk video. I may have misunderstood what he was trying to say in his response, but it sounded like he was asking you to come down and teach him how to use his Iwata as good as you are able to use a rattle can...and fix his hair? I can’t be sure. No one has built anything yet and I’m already loving this. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
I've got pretty steady hands, but I don't think even I could fix Matt's hair haha. I saw the response video - it was great. I'll have to issue a "polite" reply next week!
Thanks 👍
Figured you were coming back with a rebuttal to Texas Toast's trash from this morning! Play on, Brad!
Soon my friend, soon haha.
Thanks!
Great tutorial, nothing like a nice shiny guitar. You do a great job, despite when Texas Toast says about you. Their video was pretty funny, though.
It was quite good. I will have to respond to their generous offer.
This video has put me off the idea of spraying my own guitar, and I now have a better appreciation for why finished bodies cost what they do. I could handle the spraying well enough I think, but the sanding and polishing looks hard, and seems to require way more equipment that I am prepared to buy. Impressive finish though and I love that colour!
That’s fair Paul. There are certainly easier finishes to do, but these thick gloss finishes can be challenging and require some equipment.
I have a body I couldn't full on wet sand but I managed to moist sand it lol. Just waiting on pads and polish to finish it off
hey love the content! super resourceful.. quick question regarding part 1 .. why not do any sanding on your paint layers prior to clear coat application?
The pearl loses its color and comes out oddly silver on paints like this if you sand the last layer prior to clear coat.
Killer videos man! Doing my first paint job right now and curious if I need to use the duplicolor first then go to my 2k or should I skip the duplicolor and only use my 2k? Again, love the videos they’ve been SO helpful!
You don’t need to use duplicolor. That’s just what I chose for the color.
Did you see Texas toast's offer this morning? Hilarious.
I know you are covering all aspects of paint trying to focus on what people can do at home. I've learned a lot about materials and supplies from you.
Yeah. He's got a "big boy" spray gun. 🤣
I saw it; that was quite funny. I'll have to provide them with a polite response next week haha.
Great to watch. How do you paint the black cavities afterwards without getting paint on that lovely finish.
Carefully with a brush. You can do that first if you prefer. If you’re doing it after you can also use masking tape to protect the area around the cavities.
In my experience I do not ever need to go more than 1200 grit (unless it is a tiny scratch i go 4000 wet) and then use a polisher (machine) with a compound. Yes It may take me one more minute or so more but it is more controllable.
I have found a wire brush cleans off sand paper quite nicely
That's a good idea!
Looks excellent Brad! And I'm disappointed you don't have white splatter all over your shirt! Joking aside it turned out stunning and crying out for a hand made neck hand wired diy pickups and custom pickguard...
Thanks Stu. I'm glad you like it.
I thought that the guitar look good at the beginning of the the video. I cringed when I saw you sand it but I see why. Man you did an excellent finish, I'm impressed. That is a one sweet calypso blue guitar.
Thanks Sam. I almost always have to sand and polish.
Question Brad?
Can you paint the body and pickguard with the same paint?
Would love to see a tutorial on that.
Have a look at my tutorial on how to paint plastic parts properly. Aside from the steps outlined in that video, yes you can paint a guard with the same stuff
Love watching your vids I’m working on a Ltd viper 50 gonna spray paint it a satin olive/army green but do you have a video on how to sand a existing guitar neck for I wanna repaint the back of the neck as well
I’m not sure I have a specific video on that. The gist is you tape off the fretboard and plug the tuner holes and then you can go ahead and paint like normal.
Hey Brad,
Thanks for the tutorial. I’m not quite at the sanding part yet, but I’m wondering about the polishing steps. What if you don’t have the buffer that you have? Can the rubbing compound be applied by hand? I have a drill. Is there a special attachment I can use with the drill that will allow me to polish?
By hand or with a drill buffer attachment should work.
18:14 smooth 😎
Haha I totally forgot about that.
Hey Brad how would you remove 2k clear from a guitar body? I sprayed a guitar project last year but now I wanna change colors. Thanks and keep up the good work!
My preferred method is a heat gun and scraper. Sometimes you need to resort to sanding though.
Shiny!
I hope so haha
Very nice video. what model of rotary polisher do you use? Your videos are really helping me along with building my Les Paul Style kit. Thank you for your videos. Now when you going to send me a guitar that you built !!!!! lololol
I’m pretty sure mine is a proto tools model. I’ll have to check.
@@BradAngove No problem. Appreciate ya.
Hey Brad. Awesome work. Do you know if you can spray the 2k over a vinyl skin?
I've done it before. I generally spray a little adhesion promoter on there first to be safe.
Hey Brad, how long after your final coat of clear are you waiting for it to dry before going into the sanding/polishing process? Thanks.
About 24 hours
Great video man, which car compound would you suggest?
The liquid ice is what I used for compound.
Do a video on spray painting the solo jazz pattern (f*ck Jerry logo, dixxie cup logo, etc)
Hey Brad...How long did you wait after the last coat of clear to start the sanding/polishing process?
As always, great video!!
24 hours
@@BradAngove Awesome 👍 Thanks for the reply!
"wet on wet" technique, but only for well prepared surfaces, fast and easy. Great job Brad! I have a question, on these guitar kits the fretboard is completely ready to install? The neck is varnished? The frets are installed? I wanted to buy a ZW style guitar but i have to wait over of 4 months (!) so i start to think to buy such guitar kit and make my own, but i have no idea about the condition that they sell these guitar kits.
The kits I buy generally have an unfinished neck, but the fretboard and frets are already on it.
Awesome video! Does that clear coat dry to a very hard finish? I'm thinking about doing this. Thanks
It does. It’s automotive clear coat.
@@BradAngove I'm sorry, one more question? Does it yellow? I'd like to paint a body alpine white. Thank you
This clear has UV protection. It doesn’t yellow.
Hi! Great video. Today i made 3 layer of 2K spray max, and i would like to ask you how days should i wait until i set up the guitar body? Thank you!
If you’re going to sand and polish, do it within 1-2 days. I would wait a week to set it up, but technically you should be able to after about 1-2 days as well.
Hey Brad! I have a few questions. I'm using Rustoleum 2X for color. How long should I wait to spray the 2K clear? And what temperature/humidity would be best to spray in?
I give it a week or two before spraying the clear. Standard room temperature is fine. Warmer is better. And the lower the humidity the better.
Nice job Brad, how did you polish inside the cuts?
I never do those because the paint tends to build up well there, but if I had to I would likely do it by hand with an old t-shirt or something similar.
Brad, my dude, where is the online store so I can purchase a METAL pickguard?!
The website is in progress still, so for now I am taking one-off orders through my direct messages on Instagram or via email.
Hey Brad, lovely videos. If we are wanting a satin or matte finish, can we build up layers with 2k matte from the getgo, or do we build up clears and then finish with a matte coat?
I would recommend building layers with gloss and then finishing up with matte.
Thanks for the video.
If you're going to use a gun, then what is the reason for using the rattle can for the color coat? Legit asking.
I’m mostly demonstrating here that a 2K clear over duplicolor works well. You can use rattle cans for both, or a gun for both. It makes very little difference.
beautiful! I am currently looking into refinishing my bass and changing the color on it. Would I have to sand it down all the way down to the wood before painting it?
No, you would generally just sand it lightly with 600 grit to remove the glossy, clean it, and go from there.
@@BradAngove awesome! Thank you!
Hey Brad - fan from UK here - I’m following your guides intently. Just one question. My guitar has binding and I have sprayed the metallic colour coat over without masking. I would like your advice on whether to seal the glitter particles in with a very light coat of 2k before scraping? So as to not disturb them when scraping. Very much appreciated & take care.
No, you should carefully do the scraping work on the binding before you move forward with the clear coat. Are the particles loose?
Brad Angove Thanks Brad. I did exactly that. Just done a light mist coat on the front and sides as some sparkle was lost during the scraping. Next up 2k clear. What’s the best way to share a picture with you at the end?
Probably Instagram
Hi Brad, I’ve done a stain on the back and sides and a crackle finish on the front of my guitar body and was wondering wether I should use the same 2k clear coat all over the guitar or something different on the stained area ? The guy at the hardware store recommended a product by British paints called timber protect quick dry clear over the stain but I’m not sure if I should use a different product on the back to the front ?? Thanks mate 👍🏼👍🏼 keep up the awesome vids
Sorry forgot to mention the crackle is duplicolor with Montana crackle
If it were me I would probably 2K the whole thing.
Thanks Brad 🍻
Hey Brad I have followed your process to the T. Would it be ok to let the spraymax 2k cure for a week before level sanding? TIA! You're awesome!
Yes, that’s fine. The only issue is it will harden more and thus be more work to polish.
I've yet to see a tutorial on this subject where flattening and polishing the sides (and especially the internal curves either side of the neck pocket) is shown.
Not surprising. Paint tends to lay out quite flat in those areas so it’s generally not needed.
I still never figured out how to polish with my low speed bench buffers. red or even the zero cut blue compound is nothing compared to automotive paste. They works great on steel and plastic, but just can't put that mirror shine on clear coat.
I’ve never used one for clear. I’ve been wanting to try, but I don’t have a low speed option.
I painted my guitar and butchered lol I needed to hire someone like you to do it.
Sorry to hear that Mark
Might be a silly question but did you do the full sand and polish for the sides and back? Or is that pro clear coat sufficient for those part?
I would generally do it for the back. Rarely for the sides; the clear tends to look fine there and my polish setup is terrible for edge work.
Brad, great video. Thank you for the tutorial. I just liked and subscribed.
Question for you. I have a Fender Strat in Dakota Red but the finish is a satin finish and although red is fine I can't get used to it being a satin finish. I don't like it. I tried to use car polish to get it glossy but it only makes it a bit shinny but not truly glossy. Is there anything that can be done to make it glossy? Your video you started from scratch, ground zero but mine is already a factory finish. Thanks!
Clean it with wax and grease remover to get the polish off, then sand it smooth with 800 grit, clean again, and then you can go ahead and spray gloss on it.
@@BradAngove Thank you Brad. I appreciate your help. I'll try that.
Hi, nice video! When it’s all done and finished, will this finish look and feel close to what a 90s Fender American Standard has on it? I’m refinishing one and want it to look and feel right but I can’t really spray the same stuff Fender originally used (polyester?)
Polyester should be relatively easy to come by. Check out simtec. But yes, this will be very similar.
@@BradAngove thanks. Does that come in an aerosol or I’d have to get a pint mixed up by someone? I do have a small spray gun, and good mask. Or would acrylic with this 2k clear coat be as good?
Acrylic works well. I’m not aware of that type of sealer in spray cans, but it may exist. Typically when you catalyze it it hardens fast and you end up throwing out the paint gun afterward.
Hello Brad. The polisher that you are actually using in this video is air powered. Could you share the model. I find my air powder sander doesn't turn enough as it's random orbit and hangs up. I ended up using my Milwaukee drill with the polishing head on and it worked fine but I'd like to invest in something for the compressor.
I think it’s a proto, but I sometimes use my dynabrade sander turned all the way up. If you’ve got a setup where you can use both hands porter and cable makes a nice electric one too. I have a few options in the amazon link in the description.
I’ve struggled a lot with when to move to the next higher grit sandpaper. A number of times I’ve gotten up to 2000 or 2500 and I find that I cant remove some of the previous scratches. Do you have any tips on that?
Try switching to sanding in a single direction at those higher grits so that it’s easier to see what impact you’re having on the prior scratches.
Hey Brad I know this is an old video but I noticed on your other painting with duplicolor videos you sanded the final coat of primer with 400 grit. Did you sand this one’s primer and paint? Love your videos, thanks!
I sanded the primer on this one I believe, but not the paint because it’s metallic. You could add an acrylic lacquer mid-coat clear and then sand that before the 2K.
do you not sand the back and sides after the clear coat?
Hey Brad, sorry if you addressed this in the video but how long does the Spraymax 2K take to cure/dry before being ready for the sand back and polishing? Cheers!
24 hours
Awesome thanks for the reply!!
so I do have some high quality bench buffers from restoring knives... what compound do I use on lacquer or poly? Blue compound? and red?
I think it’s red and white, but I’m not sure. I don’t use those because I don’t have an appropriate buffer that runs at appropriate speeds.
Brad, could you wet sand here with auto glass cleaner? Would that share the same risk of cracking the clear coat like other water-based lubricants?
You could. It would be a reduced risk from the water because it evaporates more rapidly.
After much thinking about the kit I have I'm leaning toward a stained basswood finish of course clear. Any suggestions. I'm certainly not a professional painter especially when it comes to wood. I've painted more metal. A bunch of years back people would give me guitars that they had which had any number of issues mostly electrical which usually ended up being a wire that desoldered. Easy fix since I could usually rely where it came loose from. I got a strat knock off that wasn't the best but I've seen worse. Think it was an early Cort. It hawiring issues and several scratches mostly in the finish and on back. I sanded down till I got to the base coat and got some paint that was meant for metal. Same color as the guitar your working on. Don't know if it was the paint but when it dried it had a slight crinkle finish. Sanded again but used a high grit paper thinking it would work out the crinkle Put another coat and it came out the same. Left it alone for several days. By then the finish crinkle started to grow on me. Did a very light sand with high grit paper and put a satin finish on it. I actually was quite pleased with the end result. The crinkle if your not familiar is similar to the black or gray finish on many Harleys of the 2ks.
Have you seen my video on how to stain a basswood guitar body? You may find that helpful give that your kit probably came with sealer on it.
I like the crackle finishes. I did a tutorial on them recently.
@@BradAngove mine was a crinkle which turns out sort of like the metalized paint for shielding just a bit smoother. I'll have to search your page for the basswood staining.
@@BradAngove funny thing I used shaker can paint.
Brad, I've painted 4 guitars using this method and am having a bit of a problem. Around the neck joint on the body, specifically the sides of the block the neck attaches to, I keep getting a white milky type of look in sections. My most recent paint job had the same thing, but also had larger areas of it on the lower back portion. I am using DupliColor Perfect Match paint and SprayMax 2k clear. I am also wet sanding up to 3000 grit, the polishing. I'm assuming it's moisture under the clear, but I don't know. 1) What can I do to stop it from happening, and 2) Is there any way to fix it after it happens. Thanks for all your help and tutorials!
Hi Shawn, I agree that it’s probably humidity under the clear. Have you tried gently using a heat gun on it after?
Brad, do you use the wax and grease remover on the body after buffing with 1200, 2500, and 4000 before moving on to polishing?
I do. Just to make sure there are no contaminants to mess with the polishing.
Really like the color. What color is it? thank you
Calypso blue
I applied 2k over Montana gold spray paint. I applied the 2k three days ago. I can still dig my nail into the body and it scratches very easily. I followed all the steps. I'm over in England, its quite cold here but I've got the body inside a warm house. Does it just need longer to cure or is it bad application? Thanks
Are you sure you broke the interior can? It might be a warmth issue.
