$1 AUX Stereo Input Hack

  • Here's how to hack into your radio to add an aux input to connect your phone or mp3 player.
This method applies to the Honda Accord, but may also be similar for the Civic, CRV and Element from the mid 2000's that did not originally come with an aux input.
Forget expensive aux adapters that cost $30-$100! Add your own for the cost of the 3.5mm stereo cable - $1! This DIY video shows you how to open up the radio, examine the motherboard circuitry, solder and connect your own aux line. Also shown is a second method, that you don't even have to open up your radio - just add it to the CD changer lines going to the radio through the accessory port.
Honda radio's internally use digital data transmission to select inputs. Traditionally, this hack would be easy with a tape player or analog CD player. However this radio uses a digital CD player. Therefore, the radio is the only analog signal that can be hacked into.
Wires are soldered to the AF OUT port on the AM/FM modulator, and automatically override the FM signal when audio is played. The downside is that it's only a mono input.
The second method to getting an aux input requires a Honda accessory plugged into the 14-pin M-bus connector. The accessory, be it an external CD changer, tape player or ipod connector, will use the internal I2C protocol to fool the radio into thinking there's an audio input from the accessory port. We then inject our own signal from our phone/mp3 player. This will give you clearer stereo sound, however at line level volume, so you'll have to crank it up a bit.
Additionally you can add a bluetooth adapter to pair your phone with your car wirelessly. Now you can finally throw away that FM transmitter for some much improved quality sound!
This hack was performed on a 2004 Honda Accord and will be the same for 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 Accords.

      @johnz5359 7 лет назад +1

If you watch until the end, he does actually point out that the FM way will only give you mono.

I was thinking the same thing. He's only getting the left channel on the FM setting. Combining the L and R isn't the perfect mono solution, it boost what ever content is panned center by 3db. However, its better than only getting half of the songs content. Lets hope he doesn't like music from the 60's they all do crazy panning, especialy Beatles stuff.

Just finished doing this on my sister's 2002 civic, works exactly as described. Thanks so much for the video man! It was a fun project and not all that difficult. I am not very electronics savvy (I know how to solder and what some basic components look like, but not much beyond that) but this tutorial gave me the courage to try it for myself. I went the radio route (af out) and the sound quality is not very good (a little worse than AM fidelity) but its livable. However its virtually free and a neat conversation starter so I am quite pleased!

Not sure why people are hating on this video so much, this is exactly something I was thinking of doing but wasn't sure exactly where I could solder aux lines on. This is good information since in some cases this might be the best or only option that keeps it pretty stock. If you need to sell your car, people might be a little concerned by the addition, but you wont have to spend a bunch of time removing your aftermarket stereo and having to find your old stock stereo, and putting it all back together and making sure it works which you'll probably be doing in a hurry and might mess up causing a headache when you really just want to be done with it all and sell.

If slightly skilled or/and slightly understand electronics, once the OP showed the L/R channels and Ground wires vs jack connector, and shown the af out connection point, you only need 2 minutes to write it down!
6 hours of work with the right tools !!??? Really ??
With the right tools, 15 minutes max is required to remove your radio from the car, 10 minutes to take it apart, 10 minutes to skin your audio cable and weld appropriate wires to connection points , 10 minutes to reassemble it , 15 minutes to put it back in your car.
      1h total !?
If you ever feel like something simple would take you forever to accomplish, then its just not for you!

I can't imagine the experience you've gone through to find out about these hacks. Great work! Be careful with the second method though. Small static electricity may fry your radio when touching the cord with your hands. Static electricity is not uncommon when you rub your steering wheel all day.

Although I won't be adding an auxilliary line but rather bluetooth. But gotta tell you, I've watched a LOT of youtube repair an installation videos for everything from changing engine rings to you name it, over the past 6 years. NONE as well done as this one. A very, very EXCELLENT job. You are well spoken, good audio without background distraction of wind, barking dogs, crying kids. Video likewise is perfect. Its clear, focused, well illuminated and your arms and hands aren't in the way. You're to the point, concise, accurate and complete, Truly the BEST video ever! I don't know how many videos I've watched and the idiots can't speak clearly (southern drawls), don't know correct terminology or even english for that matter. Not enough light, out of focus, wind blowing, dog barking and their hands are between the camera and the object. I wonder if these idiots even watch their own videos after they make them. So, kudos to you. WELL DONE. Keep up the excellent work. I'm Subscribing.

(i do but that's not the point) and if you screw up soldering on the radio you might aswel just throw it in the trash and buy a new one... So yeah, technicaly you could prehaps build AUX on your radio for $1 if you have the tools/skills/knowledge on how to do it... wich means most people wont be able to...
