Rig Rundown - Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis and Lou Barlow

PG’s Chris Kies headed to the Cannery Ballroom in Nashville to hang with J and Lou of Dinosaur Jr., and to check out the various workhorse instruments, room-rattling amps, and piles of pedals that forge their signature alt-rock vibe.
J Mascis' main guitar is a sunburst ’63 Fender Jazzmaster with its original neck and pickups. He replaced the pickup covers and knobs, and added a Tune-o-matic-style bridge. All of his guitars have been outfitted with jumbo frets and he uses Ernie Ball Cobalt wound strings and RPS (with a reinforced ball end) unwounds (.010-.046), and purple Dunlop Tortex (1.14 mm) picks.
Bassist Lou Barlow played a Gibson Grabber on Dinosaur Jr.’s first two albums, before switching to an arsenal of Rickenbackers. Years passed and he forgot how much he liked the Grabber and its sound-until the band went on the road in 2015 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut, Dinosaur Jr., and Lou borrowed this Grabber because he wanted the most accurate tone to the original albums. After that tour, Lou traded a Fender bass for the Grabber and it’s been his main ride ever since. He uses Ernie Ball Regular Slinkys (.050-.105) and purple Dunlop Tortex 1.14 mm picks.

jay talking to this guy sounds like me talking to a cop
bayne merrell lmao
Dude probably figures everyone is a cop
“i dunno”
HAHAHA
"No. Not a good buzz"
I love how Lou talks about J like they’re a divorced couple that’s on good terms for the kids
That's pretty much exactly how it is with this band lol
I would pay to hear J Mascis read Dr Suess books on audiobook
That’s a long audio book
“Yea................like......umm...................”
I...... uhhhh..... dont like those, uhhh..... green eggs.... and uhhh...... ham
@@isaacwilliams9919 LOL
You ever see somebody who was meant to be old? Young J. Mascis looks so odd, but old J. Mascis makes so much sense
😂
I love it when J is rambling and the guy asks him a really specific question and J's voice gets super high and he just responds "I dunno".
i was about to timestamp that, its the only time ive and probably other people have heard his voice change pitch
8:10
@@ChristopherMusicMa LOAL
HAHAHA
9:36 also
"Is that guitar on "Love Is"?"
"No."
"Ah, well, I guessed. Guessed wrong."
"...But I play it now on that song."
Felt so happy for the interviewer when j said that haha
lol man J Mascis always puts the interviewer to work. that guy was giving the conversation constant CPR
I dont think hes a prick...i always thought he might be on the spectrum
@Jason Voorhees You kidding? Lmao the dude is just an awkward guy, he doesn’t seem to be dickish at all.
@@BigTyronie I thought the same thing. He’s probably extremely high functioning.
@@BigTyronie - I'm thinking the same! And not in a negative way either (The older one of my two teenage Sons has Aspergers and also needs *a lot* of prompting during chats, while also being quite a gifted pianist/keyboardist) 🙂
@@BigTyronie Turns out that a lot of people who are autistic are incredibly skilled at particular things. In this case it's kinda obvious lol.
This might be the best interview I've seen with J. I know that sounds ridiculous because he's so low key, but the interviewer actually knew how to use leading questions to get him to talk more and elaborate. Plus, he did his homework. Nice job, Chris!
yeah, and talking gear and knowing what you're talking about makes it a lot easier to just sorta bullshit about something the artist cares about.
Yes!
@Jason Voorhees i don't think he means to. i genuinely think he has aspergers or something
His interview with Noisey is great
non dino fans be like damn he's awkward
dino fans be like damn j's really coming out of his shell here
(Taken from the other rig Rundown- comment by Carter Wahl)
thank you for giving attribution for this comment...lol
true. This is loquacious J
He's so numb, can't even react 🤔
They should do a rig rundown on Kurt Cob,,,,,,,,
Oh wait, damn my bad guys.
Yeah, I had to quit a few minutes in. I just couldn't listen to him talk. The dude is just beyond awkward.
"if you don't stop playing, you won't get noise"J mascis master tip.
Do people even realise what a great job the host guy did getting J to talk so much? I love this video.
Set the speed of the video to 1,25 and then he will actually talk at a normal speed
damn thank you, now I can actually listen to this interview lmao
lol i think 1.5 was more normal
God bless you
The awkward silences are still long and awkward though
alternatively, if you slow it down to .5 it sounds like they are both wasted as hell LOL!!
This guy makes Bob Ross look frantic.
I used that reference in reverse the other day haha
Really happy they got Lou on-board this time as well!
Lou gets so rad at shows. 180-deg from J.
8:11 When a cop asks "Do you know why I pulled you over?"
I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face being interviewed by a bald guy with a handlebar mustache, J does a great job, lol!
his style of clothes is funny to me he dresses like a teenager in arizona with a zumiez giftcard
Lol
I really like the way he dresses. It's so opposite to a 50 year old father. Three Halloween's ago, I went as him to a party with the long white wig, hat, big square glasses, track jacket, hippie beaded necklace... nobody knew who I was going as but they loved my old hippie hipster look. Which js funny cause J is straight edge.
@@cactaceous lol
@@cactaceous he smokes weed and drinks but ya he never did anything else
@@joshuafult84 Isn't he straight edge ?
J Mascis is a beautiful being in so many ways, I always see people using the word awkward when it comes to his interviews... I think that things are only awkward if you let them be that way. I just love how calm he is, all his energy is channeled in his music and not bullshit.
But the interviewer has to give soooo much.
@@davidlillecrapp2960Yeah, but that's his job.
If they ever do a remake of Ferris Bueller they need to cast J Mascis as that teacher calling roll. "Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?"
hchoe741 ben stein is still alive so
MuscleDad420 hey
hchoe741 OR that song thing throughout the movie that goes
"OOoooooh yeaaaaaaaaahhhhh"
"mystical"
"wow"
"wow"
"wow"
"wow"
"wow"
Hey
I consider myself introverted and pretty shy in situations like this; but after listening to J here, I may be more extraverted than I thought.
Same
Two of the most talented songwriters and players of their generation, and they couldn't be more opposite. Man, they are both so amazing.
J is actually pretty high energy here compared to the last Rig Rundown.
trushack high energy hes like a rug on valium 😂😂
If he were any lower energy he'd be dead.
I love the simplicity J brings to interviews. Really, it doesn't ever have to be explained to more complexity.
Interviewer: "why do you turn the rhythm setting on the big muff down so low?"
J: "...like the way it sounds."
Everyone's talking about how J is talking so slow and I'm like "Holy shit, J is really opening up in this video."
Mike Baas Lmao - you are so right 😀
Nice stolen comment 👍
I just wanna was a good time
When i watch his interviews, i always end up shopping for adidas stuff.
Me and my mate Stevey travelled from Glasgow down to London to see Dinosaur Jr. at the Islington Powerhouse in ‘89. When we got there the queue was enormous and we had no tickets so it looked like we we’d came all that way for nowt! But Stevey had a brainwave, so we called the club from a pub round the corner and asked to speak to Dinosaur’s manager, and told her we’d met J Mascis a few nights before at the Glasgow gig (a lie!) and he said he’d put us on the guest list and that’s why we’d came 600 miles overnight! She was clearly stressed out as the band were due on any minute and she hadn’t the time to check up with J, so she told us to make our way to the door and the security would shout our names out!! So we ran back to the club as fast as….and sure enough a couple of minutes later the door opened and our names were shouted out over the heads of the other ticketless hundreds of unfortunate punters flocking around the door, and we shoved our way through the throng and were dragged into the venue by the security!!
The best thing about it was I had my Sony Pro Walkman with me to tape the gig, and they never even searched us!!!
That tape is amazing!
you need to upload that tape
How this guy has any hearing left, ear plugs or not, is amazing! That has to be so blistering loud!
i love that high pitched "i dunno!"
DJESUS CHRIST THAT STRING ACTION 04:13
that's just nasty
Krister Kjørholt the D is silent
YOU CANNOT SILENCE MY D
Not enough effects to hide the barely fundamental guitar technique and lack of chops. This guy's a joke.
Murray Gordon *gasp* you've exposed him once and for all!
This is J excited and happy! He seems to like doing these rig rundowns. I like watching them too!
I would love J and James Iha to have a conversation.

About how much they hate Corgan?
Perfect description lol
@@cactaceous j hate billy? why?
@@mildred78To be fair, almost anybody whose talked to Billy seem to hate him
I could listen to Lou Barlow talk forever. Underrated in every way. Also, his voice is like sonic Xanax
Imagine what a J Mascis and Phil X conversation would be like..

Torture. For the listeners as well
“THIS IS PHIL X!!!”
“Hi...”
@@grantbeck8482 LOLOL!!!!!
Unstoppable force vs the immovable object
I love J. He's one of my favorite players. His quiet personality makes his playing even better, I think. Only way Dinosaur Jr. once, but it was hands down the loudest show I've ever seen. So great. :)
"His quiet personality makes his playing even better". Uhhhh, ok?
4:05 the action on that Jazzmaster looks so high! It amazes me how high some pro players prefer their action.
Imagine going for a pint with J? Jesus, I'd definitely take a big book.
Holy cow that action on the vintage jazz master is ridiculously high lol.
could almost drive a semi under it..... crazy...
I don't know if yall are all like 11 and haven't gotten past cock rock enough yet to not know who J Mascis is l, but these heroin comments are annoying as fuck. He doesn't use drugs. He's just being himself. Check Marc Maron's interview of him on the WTF Podcast for him opening up a little more, if you care.
Brian M Yea i know. He is a major drug addict but so what
He's just really awkward.
he's not a drug addict, man. i'm sure he smokes pot but that's not enough to call the guy an addict.
MorbidManMusic im not saying he talks mellow cause he smokes pot, im sure thats just the way he normally talks
Facundo Avila He's actually straight edge, believe it or not. He's just not a social being
The stage volume must be unbelievable
It actually isn't that bad. saw them live awhile ago
Bullshit. I nearly went deaf at their show in Detroit. That was easily the loudest show I have ever been too. I could feel the bass all over my body and my legs were tingling with a harsh buzzing sensation hours afterwards. It was an insane feeling.
I saw them outside at a festival and standing right by J was still one of the loudest things I've experienced.
@@anthonyfrancis8926 I notice that and love it too lol. I try to emphasize in my band that if we are too loud then that's perfect. If we don't have people walking out or covering their ears then how dare we call ourselves a rock band! Dinosaur jr, Nirvana, and Wipers all gave me the inspiration to blow people's head off with loud earth shattering live music!
Yes. One of the loudest bands ever and a big part of why I like playing stupid loud.
I like J. His chillness really rubs off on people.
Out of all the videos J mascis is in he's the most talkitive in this one.
Oceans of silence with neither man willing to speak first. Love it.
So many perfect awkward pauses. He's either the most awkward man on the planet or a comedic genius.
J is definitely a guitar god, no question about it. His high string action is that probably because his first Jazzmaster had a problem with high note frets and he needed to get the string height up to play and he got used to it.
Segment featuring Lou Barlow begins about 30:25 .
He feels the pain of everyoooonnnea...
Reminds me of when I was stoned and 15 tryin 2 talk 2 my dad lol
J. Mascis looking pretty lively in this video!
This bald guy is good at making him talk and feel comfortable. I like him.
Reminds me of the way I calm my dog down when there's fireworks lmfao
@Jason Voorhees why?
@Matt Borel only seems that way with j he’s usually really good
J. Mascis IS Chris Griffin...
yes!!
Tariq Anwar I have a friend in Brisbane Australia named Chris Griffin. Your so right! LoL..
That a very surface level observation
AHAH! I was trying to figure out whom he resembled. On point.
I wonder if Chris can shred as good lol.
J seems way more lively in this rundown compared to the last one.
Under-rated guitar player.
Ken Keyes yup, a lot of people dont know he's 1 of the top 100 guitarist
But he can write great songs...unlike Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert etc.
J can shred when he wants to. He just doesn't want to. I'm not saying he's on Gilbert's level, but Gilbert isn't on J's level in songwriting. Luckily we don't have to choose between them. They both exist and can be enjoyed.
Ken Keyes under rated by who. ??
@@samringwald J's problem is when he "shreds"... too many notes many with no real purpose has always been J's Achilles heel.
the only time i'm as calm as J Mascis is when i'm unconscious
Jay is so cool. He seems shy and hates to talk about himself.
What a great player.
J Mascis needs to slow down, his heart is gonna blow up with all this energy
If awkward silence is you thing, you are going to love this.
The most talkative I've seen a of J..in...ever. I guess the trick is to get him to talk about things besides himself. Guitars, gear, amps. All interviews where they just ask him personal questions he goes into refrigerated molasses mode.
Still the best interview I’ve seen with j. Super awesome
That action is higher than my damn rent.
J Mascis : My Guitar Hero... Thanks
Chris Kies is such a patient guy, a good interviewer! J . is not an easy interview!
wish they would've done a rundown for kevin shields 2013 rig
Lon Boomer Fender jaguar into every pedal ever into a fender twin I'd say
fender twin just being one of a literal wall of amps and cabs on the 2013 tour, made j's rig look cute. i counted 13 heads/combos. 3 stax at the beginning of the wall, augmented by various other heads/combos, it was fucking insane.
I'm pretty sure most of Shield's rig was a display. He uses pedals the same way metal bands use empty cabinets.
i doubt it. he may not have used everything at the same time but every head and combo was on. he doesn't strike me as a "display" guy, same as mascis, every piece has a function.
Love J.
But sometimes I wonder what it'd be like being in a highly stressful situation with him. Like, in a fire. If the plane goes down. Malfunctioning car breaks while speeding. Being kidnapped. Fake execution, etc.
I imagine he'd make me very calm.
"well, if we die, I dunno...I guess we die."
😂😂😂
Dinosaur JR. the loudest band I recall ever seeing . They were blasting all the way to the back wall at the Cynthia Woods pavilion in Houston, which is outdoors and it sounded great- super loud... clean .. very impressive
Saw them at fitz. My ears rang for days
@@doyleshifflett9534 . Dang that's brutal. Small venue. DJR. I'm impressed. Similar thing at Rockefellers saw Gene loves Jezebel. Messed up the mid range in my left ear..lol
No one makes a host feel more nervous than J. J has this look on his face like you're irritating me go away LOL
Tbh tho I think it's cause he was all weird himself like the dudes body language was even more inviting with Lou,
Dude was acting like a cop or something with J
GREAT!, J ALWAYS IS A GOOD GEAR TALK, AND NOW LOU! AWESOME THANK YOU PREMIER GUITAR!
Imagine J Mascis and Steven Wright having a talk
feeling kinda hyper...
Great question at 29:08 ish! Don't think I heard that question/answer before. And overall very well done interview with J, rolling with his style. Always cringe a little through these until I realized..... "okay, he's good, he's gonna roll at his speed and vibe". Well done, interesting and informative. Also like the other band/gear appropriate references too (Marr, REM, Built to Spill, etc. )
Look at the saddles on that old jazzmaster! Holy intonation...
J is like the best interviewee ever.
J's looking like a box fresh Uncle Bulgaria. The litany of pregnant silences is making for some euphoric ASMR. Noicey.
The interviewer is such a Dinosaur Jr. nerd!
At what point did J become the perfect amalgamation of Kim Thayil and Judah Friedlander?
J seems like the kind of person who would never have any natural curiosity towards other people and their lives. He would not ask somebody “so how have you been?”
I’ve seen this more than 30 times and I’m not ashamed one bit
all jokes aside, J is actually talking more in this interview than he usually does
The action on those jazzmasters is fucking bonkers
Back here after the recent JM Rig Rundown, and I must say...
CHRIS BRING BACK THIS STACHE!!!!
J. Mascis is a living legend, I met hin in 1987 and he was the same way like he is today. A friendly calm person.
I've met him twice. Very nice both times.
Lou I've tried to talk to on like 4 or 5 occasions and the most I got was a brisk handshake. I get it, I'm bothering him at work lol
Calm is one thing, he sounds like he just took a fistful of downers.
J Marcis is normal, he's just not jacked up on Starbucks like everybody else haha. But for real I like how calm he is.
he's centered.
I like it too :)
he strikes me as being a lot like me. he's probably worrying about like 10 different things right now.
He’s autistic ya dingus
@@apeapeape999 I feel you

I put on anything with J Mascis speaking when I need to sleep.
Lol J is such a fun enthusiastic guy to interview
So he runs all four amps and every cabinet at the same time, for those who haven't watched up to that point yet. Nuts.
Chris seems more confident with the handlebars
Lou is like "I just turn it on and plug in" and the interviewer is totally bored 😂
Listening to J talk about how he plays with his pedals is like listening to a painter talking about brushes and colours
Very true
Listening these two dialogue is tantamount to the grass and the lawnmower having a conversation.
Can you do Robin Finck of Nine inch Nails rig rundown
The Air plane dive bomb crashing sound is awesome.
Got a righteous handlebar going there Chris, respect
J. M. Says a Quiet, "Cool!" And, J. M. Is just That. He Is "Cool!" In his own kind of older skateboarder way. 😎🤘
My favorite guitar pedal was the ZVex Double Rock, (J Mascis custom pedal). Got it from Kfir Ochaion...monster guitar player. Thanks J for the awesome design.
Whole load of ignoramuses with no understanding of Asperger's, it seems. J was really putting in an effort to open up here. Interesting to see what's changed (and what hasn't) from the other RR.
Ive always thought that too. He seemed like he is on the spectrum
I'm an aspie myself, so it's probably why he doesn't seem that out of the ordinary for me
Im always amazed how someone who writes so much music has so little words when spoken to^^
I've been at shows in the first row, right beneath J. and his wall of gear. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who cares about their ears! But it's certainly a fun experience. And surprisingly, you CAN still hear Lou and the vocals.
I have one of those Squier Thinlines too and I'm gonna change the neck also- cool. Alvin Younblood also did this- it's a popular thing to do I guess. That Squier body is crazy resonant and sweet.
Absolutely love Dinosaur Jr..... struggle to watch J in interviews.
4:11 He wasn't kidding, quite the action.
Putting this at half speed makes me laygh like nothing else. "Iiii juuusssttt liiikkeee to beeeeend itttt..."
