Cut-Rate Commander - Precon Upgrade Guide for Call for Backup & Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener from March of the Machine #mtg #commander #edh #mtgmom #mtgmachine
With the Phyrexian Invasion in full force against the plane of Kamigawa in Match of the Machine - Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener stands with her worlds defenders against Elish Norns endless tide, using her arcane magics to awaken the latent power of her fellow warriors and elevating them into the hero's that Kamigawa and her people need them to be protect their world.
In this build, we’ll be aiming to put +1/+1 counters on our creatures as quickly and efficiently as possible to get the most bank for our buck as we double them up with our commander - both to allow said creatures to hit as hard as possible and enable any +1/+1 counter dependent abilities they may possess. As such, we’ll be building on the base builds selection of counter generators and distributors with more efficient members, adding additional +1/+1 counter and power matters payoffs to provide us with even more counter generation and utility, and shoring up the core decks very lackluster draw package to ensure we don’t run out of resources - culminating a build that will be able to devastate our opponents life totals with gigantic creatures with ease.
Let me know if the comments below if you agree with my choices and/or what you would add to the deck instead. Also, let me know know who you would like to see next by voting on in the comments on the three choices of commander listed at the end of the video.

Your nemesis is getting a reprint, in lord of the rings set as the party tree
So glad you’re back and doing this deck! I preordered all 5 decks but this is the one I’m most excited about! Of course you hit it outta the park again with this upgrade!
Good to be back and glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Have you had a chance to upgrade or play the 5 decks? Curious as to which is your favourite now?
I upgraded Brimaz and now I’m going to do this one
@@Just-a-Canuck I actually did this one yesterday. My play group gets together every other week, there was 6 of us, we played all five, tinker for the 6th one. They were pretty fun, i upgraded this one after and almost won with it lol still waiting on a few cards for next. Almost got the war elemental infinite combo but someone took it off the top lol.
@@alpal8319 nice! I just finished my minor upgrade and okayed last night this deck is dominant!!
Well I tried out this precon with the upgrades you suggested and am having a blast with it! Thanks for thr great guide.
You're welcome and glad to hear the upgrade recommendations have been working out well for you!
This Precon got me back into Magic, and a proper introduction into the Commander playstyle. I really enjoy it and slowly ordering a few of the upgrades you are suggesting, I even had some spare fun money to grab your "nemesis."
Always look forward to seeing another video from you Grazzet, no matter how long in between videos. And I absolutely love the bit of the commander's lore you drop as you're about to dig into the deck itself.
Though I have another Naya commander in mind, I can't help feeling hype and interest in this precon. Not to mention there are some solid recommendations for additions or alternatives. Most excellent.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
I didn't really have this deck on my radar, but now I'm considering building. Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome content!!! Already ordered the pre con. Great upgrades looking forward to putting in some work with this one!!
Glad you enjoyed this one!
Yo! Amazing upgrades my guy!!! Excited to give it a try. Hope you're staying caffinated!
Glad you enjoyed them and I try!
I really really like the backup mechanic and would love to see a backup commander that gave your creatures backup. Then flickering and copying the backup cards so that you get multiple instances of the attack triggers. Nonetheless, even a backup focuses bright palms would be lovely to see!
I was considering at first to really lean into procing backup via flickering effects like you mentioned, but honestly that would have required me to make too many changes to the build to the point where it wouldn't even be the same deck anymore. Still, doing a dedicated backup build with Bright Palms would be a fun build and maybe I'll tackle that in the future!
Thanks for the advice! I'll be following most of this, as you make good points. However I want to make room for the powerhouses I already have, Doubling Season and Cathars' Crusade, plus maybe swap lands for more basics plus Jetmir's Garden.
I mean, if you already have them in your collection, this is indeed a very good deck for all 3!
Thank you very much for giving alternatives for the UB cards, i fall into that camp off not wanting them in my decks
Fair enough - that's the exact reason I put the alternatives in in the first place! Plus, all the alternatives are pretty solid too, so there really isn't any loss in power.
thank you, i'm planning on using shalai and hallar as my commander, but your guide is still aplicable to them. Thanks for considering the tyrannid swarm cards also, i'm planning on using the red terror as an infinite combo win condition too.
Sound spicy! Hope it works well for you!
Good to have you back Grazzet! Just when I go hmmm how can I upgrade this precon you upload just when I needed it 😅💪🏽
Happy to be back and to provide the upgrade you need and deserve!
Hey Grazzet! Glad to see you back 😊 I hope you're okay now! 🙌🙌🙌
I was looking forward to this precon the most. Also, thanks for adding all the changes in the comments. It makes it easier to follow what to add/remove.
I am indeed back and happy to get back to work on these precons!
Glad you enjoyed both the build and the list of changes (I've been adding that recently to make folks lives just a bit easier instead of forcing them to go back over the video again).
LOVE the backup mechanic.
I agree - it is a very interesting mechanic! Kind of like a temporary mutate that gives its target counters and them then comes online for the original creature. Very fun overall!
So excited for your jibari list! Welcome back
The Calvary Charge precon upgrade will be dropping soon, so stay tuned!
Good to see you back Grazzet 😊
Good to be back!
Thx for the video!
My pleasure!
I'm excited to see you takes on the praetors!
They are pricy, but they would certainly make very fun build arounds. Maybe I'll do another increased budget poll to cover them....
this deck is awesome!!
Glad you think so!
This looks like fun!
Glad you think so!
Excellent analysis! Was on the fence about getting the precon, I'm all in now. Your voice is a bit robotic, but other than that, love your content :)
Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, my cadence is a bit "stiff", I'm trying to work on that but there's only so much I can do since my voice is naturally monotone.
I’m excited for this deck and the knight one
Both are really solid.
I like the consideration to universes beyond alternates
Yeah - I decided to include them because there are some folks who just don't like the Universes Beyond stuff. Personally, I enjoy them, but its no fun if I have to "force" them onto folks in my guides if they don't want to play them.
Respect for going with the face commander instead of the other like everyone else 💪
I'll take it - thought to be fair, I always for for the face commander with my precon upgrades (I'll tackle the alternates if the win in the polls later).
after I saw some videos explaining how this precon is lackluster this is the type of video I needed to see how to make this deck more explosive.
Plus now I have an excuse to play a tyrannid subtheme since I didn't buy the warhammer precon
Yeah, I can see how some folks may be a bit down on this one but its best to focus on the positives than complain about the negatives! And Tyrannids can always use a good home, so that's always a plus!
A couple other cards I'd recommend adding to this deck are all will be one and cathar's crusade. All will be one turning your counter distribution into a burn spell to hit an opponent one your choosing, one of their creatures or one of their planeswalkers and cathar's crusade giving a +1/+1 counter to all your creatures everytime you play a creature spell
All Will be One is indeed a fantastic addition for the huge amounts of damage/burn it can deal as we load up our creatures with counters and Cathar's Crusade is always a fine addition in any +1/+1 counter themed build to get even more counters on our creatures.
Great suggestions!
Upgrade looks great. Saddened to see Rage Forger not included.
It adds +1/+1 counters to all shaman (mostly likely just Bright-Paws) when it ETBs, but its triggered ability deals 1 damage to target Player or Planeswalker for each creature that attacks with a +1/+1 counter. A lot going on for just 3cmc.
I think it's one of the most fun +1/+1 counter payoffs in red.
Glad you enjoyed the build and interesting suggestion - Rage Forger is not a card I would have considered but it is a fun little payoff to give our +1/+1 counter laden creatures a bit of extra reach. Might be worth experimenting with!
Picked this deck up, and in collector booster sample I pulled the new Oozolith. Felt like the luckiest guy in the world
Nice
That's a nice $3 pull - congratz!
Really liked your modifications to this deck.
Of note, I noticed that in your decklist on MTGGoldfish you still have Mosswort Bridge in the decklist and not Oran-Rief. Just wanted to mention that in case it is fixable.
Glad to hear it! And I fixed the Oran-Rief, the Vastwood issue on the decklist. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
He's back! Hope your doing well.
That I am and that I am! Glad to be back!
The salt for The Great Henge is one of my favorite things to look forward to when you cover a deck with green in it 😂
Glad to hear it, because as long as WotC keeps refusing to reprint it, I'm going to keep bringing it up! Its been 3+ years now!
Grazzet, are you gonna do this for each precon? The tinker and knight precon is what im interested in seeing your creative genious on!
I am and I have - all the precon guides are up now (Sorry for the late response, I've been really busy with these precons and am just now catching up with the comments)
I'm definitely putting Vorinclex in there and swapping the commander for Hallar partnership
This is the way.
That is certainly one way to do it!
Surprised Damning Verdict is missed as it is a wipe that leaves our board alone the vast majority of the time. Since the Ozolith (OG not the new one) exists, the triangle of Heliod, Sun Crowned, Urza’s Saga and Shadowspear are also worth considering.
Urza’s Saga can find it and Shadowspear, which on our counter laden creatures will see our life total get out of range of our opponents winning through conventional means. Heliod is a mana hungry but hard to remove counter enabler which also makes our life total high enough to absorb enemy attacks.
Probably left out because of cost. Damning verdict is like $6.
@@theinvisiblegentleman1142 Today I learned. It's sitting at a couple of Euros where I am
Price my friend. Sadly most of these are very pricy but would make superb upgrades on an increased budget.
Interesting build. Surprised you didn't put in some more targeted removal. Personally, I chose to lean into the backup/etb theme.
I put in cards like feldon (of the third path), delina, kiki-jiki, mirage phalanx, and jaxus, which work with the akki-battle squad to give infinite combat phases, can be used to copy wood elves or farhaven elves to ramp, copy armor craft judge to draw some cards, and copy the backup creatures to not only add counters but also double up on those powerful extra abilities.
That honestly sounds pretty sick. What's the decklist look like for that?
Hey, so I've not been able to find one of the carddraw sources here, but I just found a Rampant Rejuvenator, if you target that with bright-palm's backup, wouldn't that become an insane amount of ramp?
Do you think that vorinclex, monstrous raider can be utilized in this deck, if so, what would you exchange it for
Good to have you back, but over the stress of the RUclips algorithm and the need to be on time with this kind of vids please do you and all of us a favor and don't spread yourself to thin.
No worries! All the precons are done and I'm feeling good - but thank you for the concern.
What are your thoughts on these decks? I feel they are really good, provided you can side in the Planechase cards when not playing Planechase.
Overall, I think most of them are solid. The only issue I have is that Growing Threat seems very disjointed out of the box. I mean it CAN work but it doesn't feel good to play out of the box and requires a LOT of changes to be made to run smoother (in my opinion).
Thoughts on Kodama of the west?
I think the best way to play the deck is focus on the Backup Mechanic itself and Blink mechanics.
I can see where you coming from and, if I had to build around Bright-Palm from scratch, I would have done so (since it was my initial plan when I first saw this commander). But within the confines of this precon I found that I would have had to change way too much of the deck to make this gameplan work - making it less of a precon upgrade and more like rebuilding it from the ground up.
That said, I would love to tackle this commander again in a backup dedicated build focused of flickering her and other backup creatures to re-proc their abilities and see how it turns out!
@@GrazzetMTG Totally, I understand the constraints.
Can't wait to see that!
@@GrazzetMTG Would love to see a blink type build
man your upgrade brews are just amazing this is just another piece of proof you don't need exspensive cards to make decks explosive
are you gonna do tinker time?
Yep, that's going to be the next/last precon I'll be covering (as of time of posting this).
@@GrazzetMTG Sounds good can't wait for that
oh by the way i do have a card that incredible in the deck especially if "Shalai and Hallar" is the commander or in play
its called "Retaliator Griffin" if you get dealt damage the griffen gets that many +1/+1 counters. and when Shalai and hallar" are in play you can basically throw the damage right back
Talking about back-up... I am surprised you didn't swap the commander for the other one which seems to have much more potential! Is it because of budget reasons?
The reason for it was that, when I cover precons, I will build around the face commander to keep things simple. Thats said, we will be seeing all the alternative commanders go head to head in a poll after the precons are covered so that at least 1 of them will get a build of their own.
Could you run Kiki jiki in this deck?
The sexy voice who gives us lovely mtg content is back
Stop - your making me blush...
But seriously - it feel good to be back and making content!
Hey Grazzet the knight deck are in your plan ?
Cavalry charge
That's the next precon we'll be covering - so hang tight, it'll be coming soon!
Grazzet, which would you say is the strongest precon after your upgrades are made? I'm trying to figure out which precons to get and so far I only picked up the knight one... I was to build them all, but need to set some boundaries XD
Cavalry Charge is probably both the strongest out of the box and after upgrades to be honest, so if you have it in your collection already then I'd say that that's a pretty solid start. Otherwise, I would say that Call for Backup and Divine Convocation are the next 2 strongest (they both have solid effects and they gameplans are well supported), Growing Threat Taking 4th place (just because it requires so much to be made playable) and brining up the rear would be Tinker Time (since the commander effect is not TOO impactful for the effect we put into enabling him).
Hope that helps!
@@GrazzetMTG Thank you so much man! :D Love your videos! Will tune my decks after yours probably :D
I am thinking the two you mentioned will be the ones regardless, Convocation seems really fun, and it has a vehicle I can take out for my kotori deck to use. Call for back up being good because I do love counters, but will probably use the second commander for this one and slot the likes of chishiro into it to shoot my counter load everywhere.
Hello, this is my first commander deck, and over the last month I've been slowly getting all the upgrades. I was wondering if besides the sidegrades, are there any other out of budget cards you would suggest adding to make the deck more powerful?
Thank you : D
Sure! A lot of new +1/+1 support cards have come out since I covered this build, so there are a few that we can consider adding to improve the build, such as:
Court of Garenbrig [Wilds of Eldraine] - This card from the latest set can be another way for us to double our creatures +1/+1 counters or, at worst, at least gets us some additional counter on our creatures if we can't hold on to the monarch.
Arwen, Weaver of Hope [Lord of the Rings] - this one serves as another way for us to get counters on our creatures as they come into play AND gets better and better the more counters we load onto it.
&
Nahiri's Resolve [March of the Machine: Aftermath] - is a very solid way for us to blink our commander every turn to proc their backup while giving all our other creatures haste and an offensive statboost.
Hope that helps!
@@GrazzetMTG thank you very much
Would invigorating hot spring be a good inclusion in this deck upgrade?
I think is would be a nice include - its serves as another source of tokens and way to make our counter laden creatures hasty (which is important for our X cost creatures to allow them to swing in immediately).
subscribed a day too late for the chance to win a deck :(
love your videos though!!!
Why not discuss using the backup commander to "backup"
Its many times more terrifying, as its "All will be one" in the command zone!
Shalai and Hallar are pretty scary as the headliner in this deck, since they can deal a WHOLE LOT of burn, but I will always build around the face commander for my precon upgrades. Thats said, Shalai and Hallar are featured as an option in the current poll - so if you do want to see a build featuring them instead, there is still a chance!
Is there any reason why ppl wouldn’t want to specifically use universe beyond cards?
Some folks just don't like to have other IP's mix with MTG, which I can understand.
Trade out colossal majesty for fight Rigging.
Fight Rigging is a solid little source of counters and, eventually, a free spell, though personally I like Colossal Majesty more for the easy to proc card advantage it provides (Kind of like Phyrexian Arena but in green). But hey, if you want more counters, Fight Rigging is a solid choice.
You got semesters end wrong Semesters end doesn't reduce +1+1 counters down to one it adds an additional+1+1 counter to each creature and one additional loyalty counter per plainswalker
Sorry for the confusion - what I meant was that, when we flicker a creature, it loses all the counter it had previously (effectively reducing it to zero counters) and then adds a +1/+1 counter to it, which is what I meant by it "reducing its counters to one".
Backup was indeed called, and it may have caused the enemies to do the same... or at least try. All I know is that I need to fix my notifications again. Amazing build as always, and sorry for being late!
Day 604 of waiting for the face reveal. By the way, did you warch Spice8Rack's video on Magic after Endgame- I mean March of the Machines? Cause it does address some concerns you had in a previous answer.
Glad yo hear that you enjoyed it as usual!
I have not had a chance to (been quite busy with the precon upgrades) but I'll be sure to check it out!
#GRAZZET10KGIVEAWAY yesterday on my local game store ive played agnaist this deck with a few changes and now ive seen almost all the videos on this chanel

Otherwise, happy to hear that you've been enjoying the content!
more pls
I'll be doing precon upgrades for all the Precon decks for this set - so more should be coming soon!
Why are The Great Henge and Ozolith so expensive!
That is a question I ask myself every time I make a green deck with +1/+1 counters in it....
Bust seriously, its because they've only been printed once and are high demand cards for a very popular deck type. Hopefully Commander Masters fixes that.
Hopefully the phyrexian commander deck will turn into a heavy tribal focused one, unlike the actual product itself, which is just a disappointment wrapped in an ichor shell
Yeah, I went Phyrexian Tribal for my version of the build to best make use of both the incubator token creation AND the proliferate - as opposes to using artifacts which only get you the tokens.
First
pretty sure its hamza not hamaz :p
In my defense, it would not be the first time that I butchered a card name - and it will likely not be the last!
Are you using narrator software? I like the content but the voice is going to make it hard for me to continue checking it out as I find it very annoying
I am not. Sadly that's just how my voice is when I'm recording.
