Official music video for "Under The Ivy" by Kate Bush
Originally aired on The Tube - Introduced by Paula Yates
Under The Ivy was specially written as a B-side for Running Up That Hill which was released on 5th August 1985.
A performance of this song was recorded at Abbey Rd Studios around the time of its release
One of the few advantages of having existed on earth, especially at this time: I was here when Kate Bush was.
It's going to absolutely gut me when she's gone. I'm so glad she's still around.
mate don't rub it in
The good thing is 60 is considered relatively young these days. She could remain with us for a long time yet!
... and still feeling enchanted by her excellent works as much as I was to her first notes.
j"ai le même sentiment . sans le savoir elle est une source de joies de de plaisirs pour moi!!!
It never ceases to amaze me that *_this_* beautiful track is a "B" side.... honestly, I think anyone would be so happy to have this as the "A" side to a single.
just one side of the coin, that's how i look at it. (the best side)
@@henrifischer1119 A lovely way of looking at it. :)
The truth is often on the B side. x
this is my fav song of hers
Written and recorded in just a single afternoon
Imagine being able to use a song of that quality as a B side. Seriously....a B side!!! I can think of plenty of famous singer/songwriters who would probably consider that the best thing they've ever composed. But Kate uses ot as a B side....
interesting comment..i wonder if earlier bsides were songs that simply didnt make it onto the albums.
It was a mistake she didn't include this song on any album. Its one of her best
I heard that she needed a song for the B-Side to Running Up That Hill, so she threw this together real quick. I love both songs and they fit perfectly together.
Doesn't her smile at the end touch your soul 💖
Absolutely!
I was about to say just that, and this was the top comment :D
Everything of her touches me,not only her smile :)
A smile that heals!
Kate has always melted my heart ❤️
It wouldn't take me long
To tell you how to find it
To tell you where we'll meet
This little girl inside me
Is retreating to her favourite place
Go into the garden, go under the ivy
Go under the leaves, away from the party
Go right to the rose
Go right to the white rose
I sit here in the thunder
The green on the gray
I feel it all around me
And it's not easy for me
To give away a secret
It's not safe
To go into the garden, go under the ivy
Go under the leaves, away from the party
Go right to the rose
Go right to the white rose
Go into the garden, go under the ivy
Go under the leaves with me
Go right to the rose
Go right to the white rose
I'll be waiting for you
It wouldn't take me long
To tell you how to find it
One of the must heart achingly beautiful songs ever written.
I remember when I was younger I didn't think much of Kate Bush. I am now 23 and she is all I listen to. I can't even put into words how much her work means to me. There is a song for every mood, for every emotion, for every feeling. I hope deep in my heart that one day I will be able to tell her how much her music has helped me. I don't think there will ever be another musician that comes close to Kate Bush.
I was a teen in the '80s. My sister and her friends were all about Kate Bush. I thought she was weird (that applies to both my sister and KB). Someone re-introduced me to KB in 2007 - and I went on a KB bender, which I'm still on, to this day.
She was remarkably mature artist when she first appeared, I think it takes a mature listener to fully appreciate what her music offers. She is mostly certainly not a pop artist and writes about what she wants to write about and releases what she wants to release. I was too young to "get it" in 1978 but by the time "Hounds of Love" came along I was totally lost in her world and I have been ever since. Her music is timeless and keeps on giving - a truly great artist.
Interesting to read from someone who is 47 years younger than I talk about when they were younger. This doesn't invalidate your opinion to me by any means. I'm just saying that I've loved her music for close to three times your age.
@diator I was 15 back in 1978 and I loved her and ‘got’ her from the get go. She seemed like a soul sister, we both were a bit hippy, a bit kooky and I had a bit of resemblance - long dark hair etc. I’ve been championing her since then and introduced my children to her from a young age. She seems like a part of my dna and the soundtrack to my life.
I was a kid in '78 when WH came out and it and subsequent albums I didn't think much of but she was part of the soundtrack of my teenage years though as a teenage male I was far more into punk and new wave acts so many years later I saw a used vinyl copy of The Whole Story in a flea market it was 30p the artwork was intruguing I had nothing else to listen to so though why not, I'll give it a spin. Well the early tracks where what I remember but Cloudbusting was gorgeous and I really liked it enough infact that I saw which album it came from and thought I'm going to buy a copy of that, why not. So Hounds of Love hit my CD player and it was OH MY GOD THIS IS INCREDIBLE! It played non stop all day long for an entire month from then she can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned our Kate is a genius and I'm besotted.
The smile and look on her face at the end is adorable
When I was a child I was very happy in my own company, perhaps because I was an only child for the first 10 years of life but also because I’ve always suffered from anxiety for as long as I can remember. I enjoyed being and playing alone and would get anxious and shy around new people.
In my late teens I lost my virginity to a sexual assault. It made me retreat to a place of loneliness but this time I couldn’t feel comfortable there. I wanted someone to help me and support me and take away that lonely feeling but I couldn’t bring myself to tell anyone until years later.
This song (and many other Kate songs) completely speak to me. I love her ♥️
Hey, I wish you healing and the peace of mind ❤
Although I've been lucky enough not to have experienced your road and can't ever truly understand what you have been through, I think I have some understanding of how you relate to this song and can apply it to my perspective. It always brings tears to my eyes, remembering some lonely times and yet also remembering what those times gave to me and how I enjoy my own company because of them. Sometimes you just need to retreat away from the party and be by yourself, sometimes you have no choice as you are detached from the rest of the group, sometimes you need someone to help you come back to the party, "it wouldn't take me long, to tell you how to find me."
@@littlealex2007 Beautiful what you said!
Healing and love to you.
so sorry to hear about experience, please believe that there are lots of people out here who love you and wish you well, i always felt that this song was written for people who are vulnerable or suffering
there's something unearthly about the way she can generate and transfer emotion, there's something vulnerable about this performance
Kate's masterpiece. A truly beautiful piece of art. And that smile at the very end warms the soul. Lovely to see Paula Yates at the beginning, an incredible person taken far too soon.
Big Kate Bush fan but didn't know who Paula Yates was being from Canada. Tragic early death, she seemed like a really cool gal.
Married to Bob Geldof of Live Aid fame at one point, very sad.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but “Under The Ivy” fits perfectly as the B-Side to “Running Up That Hill”. It has a similar somber and droning feel. Love this one and love Kate’s voice here! It’s amazing how shy she is, meanwhile every time she performs she crushes it and gives it her all.
I needed a track to put on the B-Side of the single Running Up That Hill so I wrote this song really quickly. As it was just a simple piano/vocal, it was easy to record.
I performed a version of the song that was filmed at Abbey Rd Studios for a TV show which was popular at the time, called The Tube. It was hosted by Jools Holland and Paula Yates. I find Paula’s introduction to the song very touching.
It was filmed in Studio One at Abbey Rd. An enormous room used for recording large orchestras, choirs, film scores, etc. It has a vertiginously high ceiling and sometimes when I was working in Studio Two, a technician, who was a good friend, would take me up above the ceiling of Studio One. We had to climb through a hatch onto the catwalk where we would then crawl across and watch the orchestras working away, completely unaware of the couple of devils hovering in the cloud, way above their heads! I used to love doing this - the acoustics were heavenly at that scary height. We used to toy with the idea of bungee jumping from the hatch.
From THE OFFICIAL SITE OF KATE BUSH
This was Studio One? Cool... I've watched an orchestra record in there myself. I'm now wondering whether I've played that piano she was using. If it was the Bosendorfer with the bass extension, then I think I have! It's an utterly wonderful instrument.

I cannot believe that I have just heard this beautiful song for the first time. It has restored my faith that special music and honest songwriters are out there, even if they are seldom seen and heard.
You’ve been missing out....
I just discovered in 2022.
im afraid there wont be many honest artists nowadays writing without commercial success and catchyness being the main goal. it was hard enough to rebel against record labels back then let alone now it is basically unknown for a successfull artist to come about from non commercial true written art. the industry has won and we are left with new rubbish hits that only last a month and you can only listen to a handfull of times before being bored. todays radio hits are just basic produced jingles with vocals to entertain the moment with no meaning or art or longevity. its sad..
@@ferdiemiddleton8910oh, come off it. Western music has been largely commercialized since classical composers were getting commissioned by the rich to write music. If you can’t find art in any era of music, that’s your problem.
Just two minutes, just Kate's voice and her piano ... and still this song evokes so much different emotions in me like no other song does. Her smile at the end is so stunningly innocent and humble, it shatters me to the core.
🎯
✊"me also I can actually
remember watching
this live on the telly
and recording it VHS ;))
and playing & watching
& rewinding broadcast
yes, you're right - it's the humility in that smile which makes it so beautiful! well noticed
I can't express how much I love and miss Kate Bush... it's such a painfully sweet ache.
Music ended here didn’t it? 😢Amazing...
How can this be a b side of anything?
what a smile!
This song makes me weep and fills me with joy.
The only musician who makes me cry when I listen to her music, and especially this song. Why? Because she touches my soul.
Not the only one for me, and I have been a Kate Bush fan since I was around 5 when she hit the charts. What bring tears to my eyes most is a composition of hers that isn't a song as there are no words, it is a short musical composition called "One Last Look Around The House Before We Go".
Wonderful song, incredible voice.
This song is like a dream. One too magical to truly exist in this life.
One of my all-time favourite Kate songs. Words can't articulate accurately how it makes me feel.
Really great artists usually take time to appreciate! To me, Kate is for deep listeners. It's like a Gateway to a different universe! If you give up too soon, you aren't granted permission! Don't Give Up! 😁
A beautiful Queen
Simplicity, power, beauty and emotion. All that it just a few minutes. One of the most wonderful of all her songs.
So haunting and perfect. This makes me feel things from a time long past, stirring up feelings that are not my own but that of ghosts who had walked the earth long before. Their feelings of melancholy and sadness. But I am happy to accommodate these feelings, they are so magical
That smile at the end always gets me......
Real !!!
One of the most important songs for me, saved my life.

✊"me also ❤️🔥&🙏 :))
I am 65 but heard of this talented performer. At 65 I am hooked. Love. You Kate. Chicago.
This song is simply sublime, still after all these years
nearly 3 minutes of sheer happiness
this is achingly beautiful
I just died..had to walk away from my computer at work. This is my favorite.... amazing.
Paula Yates nice Introducing ! That Smile at the end !
That whole bit made me nostalgic as hell. Poor Paula.

Absolutely ravishing
Just her and a piano is pure magic.

Probably my favourite song of Kate's! 💙
Hello friend
I'm always thank full for this song and the gift of Kate Bush to the world. Pure magic, thank you. Thank you for the smile at the end warmth and honesty in a smile.
As ever this woman can make me cry with her beautiful voice
Mesmerising! Such a beautiful and touching song. Thank you Kate Bush for your wonderful music ❤️
I was sad when it was over.
My favorite Kate Bush song. I try not to overanalyze lyrics ….. however some of the key words, and she is British, and ww2 left a huge scar, and there were some very courageous German children that spoke out against the war. I always had hoped that this was a tribute to them.
The girl with the sweetest smile !
I was 25 when Kate shook the music world with the best debut album ever made, The Kick Inside. 42 years later and I am still in love. I bought Hounds the day it was released here in Oz, but I didn't hear this song until years later. A 'B' side ffs.
Kate Bush, a beautiful, beguiling witch. She shares a birthday with Emily Bronte, and my mother. A welcome part of my life, always.
Saturday Night Live 1978. Amazing performance. Been a fan of hers ever since. Flew to the UK for her concert..... she's one of a kind. 😍
A true lyrical genius, with the voice of an angel. So very underrated in her era and now. All her performances are like a religious experience. Such a beautiful Soul.
Her voice is incredible! Very good song!
She's my favorite musician and there are so many songs that are so great from her that it would be impossible to choose a favorite-but this one is the one I always return to, and I can most likely say, is my favorite.
Sneaky cameo by a very much younger Jules Holland during Paula's intro. The people they must have met!
Beautiful song and person. Love Kate
Thank you, Kate, for making this available officially! It's a gem and one of my all-time favorite songs. And it's so nice to finally be able to watch a clear picture and hear improved sound.
Diva!
The goddess…oh how my young soul cried out in love, reverence and greediness of this woman’s gift of music, beauty and art.
I have the feel she is trying to put videos in her channel to have us watching it because she is going to drop the first single of her next album soon
I THINK THE SAME OMGG I Hope she Is coming back It’s been almost 8 years since 50 Words For Snow
@@marioarauz5055 I think it is very probable! Remember when she released Director's Cut and then she released 50 words of snow? Now, last year, she released her whole discography in remastered, nos she is "updating" her channel. She is trying to get a bit of attention, I believe, because she is going to drop something new. Let us just wait!! I am excited!!
BookOwl OMG YES,I read somewhere that she is releasing a Compilation of unreleased and rare songs so I think it’s very likely for her to release something later this year!
We can dream.
I want the dvd release of the London shows myself!
Beautiful, first time hearing it.
You're lucky, i never get tired of hearing it, so unique.
Can you imagine if this genius had been born before the advent of sound recordings??? We would never have heard this magnificent voice 😭😭😭

So Cyndi Lauper made millions and what did Kate make?
Herself..
Frankly, I don't think she gives a flying F.
Kate is Kate, everything else doesn't really matter.
Thank God for Kate Bush!!
Unknown. As a hint, she owns the record company Nobel & Brite and has at least one mansion.
I hear around 60 million, and that was before Stranger Things.
Who wouldn't wait under the ivy for Kate?
I just love how she makes the song sound beautiful both with background harmonies and all on her own with just the piano. Absolutely adore her!
Definitely one of my all-time favourite songs. I could happily listen to it on an endless loop.
Perfect. Honestly I know the visuals and dance/performance are all part of what makes Kate's art so special. However, I would be happy to see and hear her just like she is here at a piano. What a special and unique talent. I know I'll never meet her. But I carry her music with me every day. Love you Kate 💓

There's only 2 artists i listen to now. One is Kate Bush the other is Frank Zappa. Between those 2 I think i could manage for the rest of the foreseeable future.

Will never not be a favourite ❤️
I literally always have an ivy plant in my room because it reminds me of this song.
In a world of desperation where climate change, war-mongering, post-pandemics and economic meltdown threaten each of our mental and physical existences there stands one voice of clarity, consistency, beauty and hope. That voice belongs to Kate Bush.
I have adored her since my mid teens when she first arrived in 1978, this song and Delius are two of my absolute favourites, of course l love every single song she has written, but this and Delius hold a special place due to them both being so unique even in a vastly unique catalogue of work.
The video for Delius, Kate as a beautiful Swan, is amazing..
She sings from her soul .on this track ..like it's a memory deeo in her consciousness. from a forgotten past....painfully ... beautiful song..Melanie 33 ❤️🌈
