Over a year ago I interviewed Peter MacDonald for my documentary ' In Search of the Last Action Heroes'. We discussed Superman The Movie exclusively for my RUclips Channel. Peter was the camera operator on the film and worked closely with Richard Donner and Cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth. Enjoy!
Wonderful interview. Thank you Oliver.
Thank you.
Thanks I really enjoyed the interview 👍
Excellent production value and very informative. 👏🏼👏🏼
Mr Harper, something I picked up on is when he said "three hour film"? Is he referring to an assembly cut? Is there a three hour version of Superman The Movie?
"This country is safe again, Superman.. thanks to you."
_"No, sir, don't thank me, warden. We're all part of the same team. Night!"_
*I C O N I C*
Indeed. They'd never allow that in a movie nowadays.
One of those happy circumstances where all the right people collaborate and make something magical. Amazing!
Donner nailed it with his vision. It's easy to make a man fly. Stick him on wires. But to make you believe a man can fly, and care about him.......
My mother fell in love with Superman and drag Me to the cinema 7 nights in a row .My old man was abroad working, when he eventually arrived home she asked "Carl will you take me to see Superman, I haven't seen it yet"... Superman, one of those magical moments in time.
This man also worked as a Camera Operator on Batman (1989). That's amazing he got to work the same position in two DC classic films.
Beautifully done. Superman: The Movie holds a special place in my heart. It was the very first movie that I ever saw projected. I was 4 and, after seeing it, I absolutely believed a man could fly. Others have portrayed Superman but Christopher Reeve WAS Superman. Mr. Unsworth was a huge part of that magic.
@Al Bundy for President Williams is still the gold standard for scores.
@@MichaelJShaffer No score will ever psych you up for a movie like the Superman score does.
I could listen to these gentlemen talk for hours on their craft. What an amazing movie and still giving joy today to us all. Well done for the interview Oliver 10/10
Loved hearing Peter talk on "In Search of The Last Action Heroes". He's a true old school talent and a wonderful story teller.
Those Kryptonian costumes were just absolutely brilliant. They hold up so well.
The best most impactful movie of my entire life! Sheer cinematic magic that transcends generations and time. The greatest portrayal the world will ever see or know of the man of steel. Christopher Reeve forever!
That last sweeping shot in the wheat field with the swelling score was an amazing and emotional shot. Marking Clark’s transition to the next step in his journey. Very similar to the iconic scene with Luke and the twin suns setting. Magic!
And of course John Williams music throughout....awesome.
Oliver - the gentleman we were talking about got in touch with me and we had a blissful (for me, anyway) hour and a half of chat. Lovely man. Thank you very much indeed for putting me on to him!
Thanks Oliver! This is wonderful, practically brought a tear to my eye listening to Peter. I've worked a couple of times with some older guys in the film industry and they're real troopers, do anything, and with a twinkling eye. They're still like kids, who can't believe they've landed this for a living, despite being supremely talented. I'm really pleased you've made this now as these stories need recording. Hope you enjoyed connecting with the films of your childhood. Must be a dream come true.
My favorite movie of all time. Pure Magic!
This movie was (is!) such a delight. And the scene he describes at the very end of the clip is just perfect, gets me every time.
Great video and interview with Peter. Great work as always Oliver !!!
This is brilliant. Thank you for uploading this Oliver.
There is a softness to the focus in Superman. The colour palate in this movie is wonderful. It’s straight out of the comic books.
Thank you Peter MacDonald for your extraordinary work, especially on RAMBO III !!!!
Brilliant interview. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
Those set photos are amazing! So much life in them.
"Alone in the wheatfield"...lump in throat at the end. Quite an emotional story old Superman isn't it?
That was a wonderful clip to watch, thanks for sharing this.
Great work as Always Oliver , Thank you.
Also to Peter Mcdonald Sir: the scene you mention with the Mother (Martha) and Clark together on the wheat field , That is for me one of my two favorite scenes in the Movie and one of the greatest for me in film history.
It always brings me to a tear or more as it connects me to my Mother who passed almost 20 years ago.
Thank you.
Its moments like the wheat field scene that truly makes Superman soar and not all the great action and special effects which were great at well.
I really enjoy your content! Quality is above and beyond. Hopefully, someone at netflix sees this. "The movies that made us (season 2)...superman: the movie" :)
Great, informative interview, Oliver - thank you for posting it.
lovely interview
Oliver,I’d like to thank you for all of your great conten, o have had many a happy time having a bath sipping a beer and enjoying your retrospectives. All the best mate. Mike southampton. 🎬
Brilliant video/interview Oliver, it's wonderful to hear more stories from the crew members about such an iconic film.
Fascinating! It's always nice to hear these stories behind the scenes. Good work, both Peter MacDonald and you, Oliver Harper!
Lovely video and great interview, thank you for sharing it. Happy New Year Oliver.
Geoffrey Unsworth, Gil Taylor, Arthur Ibbetson. My three favorite British Cinematographers of the period.
wonderful video. Thank you for doing this Oliver :)
Beautiful interview thank you
Thank you! Such a fantastic video.
Respect from BRAZIL
Thanks for this Oliver.
This soundtrack is one of the best movie soundtracks ever written, I could listen to this every day. In my opinion it’s John Williams best work to date.
The Documentary was amazing too Oliver. Very well done, with any luck it will be picked up by one of the big streamers.
What a great video, thanks Oliver.
Great interview, classic movie. Thanks Oliver!
Thanks for this Oliver this is awesome
Watched a couple of days ago the 3hr cut of superman
Neil mark Taylor What a story
This was awesome!
Great interview Oliver well done
Great work.
Man.... I can't wait for my copy of this documentary to arrive!!!!
Well done, very informative.
No dislikes for this so far.
Apparently General Zod disapproves.
this is awesome sir!!
This is great thank you
The colors from this movie just *"pop"* to this day. Reds, blues, yellows, greens... Even in photos.
AND I'M COLOR BLIND. 😵🤭
Great vid
Great stuff.
The best superhero movie
That was epic.....
Wow, just a few scenes in the BG and the genius of Donner's Superman is clear. Superman and Star Wars were great filmmaking that was equally for children and adults. We've lost that kind of storytelling... sad.
Fuck me, your videos deserve wayyyyyyyy more views. 10/10 content
When will 'IN SEARCH OF THE LAST ACTION HEROES' be available to the general public and how will it be accessible? Netflix, bluray etc etc ??
The end of the video give me shills.
my dvd copy of in search of the last action heroes is defective. im disappointed and will not be contributing to amymore crowdfunding documentaries like this. huge waste of £25 for a defective disc in a cheap as hell case
Look at the flying scenes back in 78 and they are still better then man of steel.
It's an Excellent Iconic Movie but I Hate the Ending. Terrible. Superman 2 built off this movie and it's better.
I loved this video Oliver! This movie had a major impact on me. I’m a firefighter in a big American city, Superman showed me that I wanted to help others.
