Awesome video .. I've seen these guys a few times over the years and 2001 i was at a small jazz club in Schenectady Ny . I had some food and watched Scott and the band play and after the show i was at the bar having a beer and Scott and K Covington sat down and we talked music, guitar stuff . Scott was really cool and i said if you don't want to talk shop then i won't pick your brain . Scott laughs and told me the only time he won't talk about music, guitar tricks , licks is when he is dead . that was a night i will never forget ...
Hey hey! I used to see them all the time in Schenectady! Moved out to seattle in 96' and haven't seen TT since. The guys were always great to hang out with before and after shows!
Scott was a teacher at MI in '89. He was tough on you at times, but always funny and of course, a monster. Jeff Berlin sat in with him many times as well...
This wouldn't be the Craig Parrish that introduced me to TT 30 years ago, playing in Wazzu's now defunct Crimson Company? Those were good times. And I'm still geeking out on this band. Simply amazing.
I thought I had a pretty good idea on it all..and able to play over changes and feeling pretty good. Then I saw this lol..now I see I have a long way to go
there are so many interesting connection between these bands after Weather Report broke up: Scott played guitar for the Zawinul Syndicate, Gary Willis played with Wayne Shorter for a Tour and i think Scott Kinsey (future keyboard player, in this vid it s Goldblatt also a great player) was actually Zawinul's keyboard tech for a while and sure is massively influenced by Zawinul
The three on the kickdrum with 32nd notes on the hats under Gary's solo is insanely hip drumming... sort of where Tony Williams was taking players with a lighter touch like Omar Hakim and here, Joey Heredia, whom I was not aware of as such a competant player. Lol, can't forget Scot H's rack system; so 90's and he had it at year -0 in that sense. GW solo is top of the pile for post-Jaco players at that time. Great post thanks !
I talked to Joey Heredia a couple times, once at the Baked Potato in Studio City, once at a drum clinic at West L.A. music in Santa Monica. He's a real cool cat!
Thank you for uploading that one. TT were hot back then, I love Gary's compositions so much, never heard Self Defence performed live. I practiced that one forever. Gary's fluency and knack for melodic turns is second to none.

When I look at all their CDs I've bought & played excessively I want to demand that TT continue forever. But as musicians, do they still feel like there's anything left for them to discover? Please God; let them keep trying.

@MrBertiep Don't worry Bertiep .:0) One of my favorite concerts of Tribal Tech was their concert in Chile where Joey played with them. It was Amaizing!!!!
Some folks try to prove something by playing at warp 11. I just sat back and let Mr Willis express himself and it is really enjoyable. I don't pick up too much ego, although he would be well within his rights to throw that out there. Don't you feel for keys men? Yea, i know how you feel. I didn't discover them until 2009 and I'm so sorry that I was unaware of them during their run, which was about 1986 to 2000. But they just released a new reunion album this year, which I've been enjoying very much.
Hello my friend. Joey is a wonderful drummer but the drummer who played with Michael Camilo and Anthony Jackson I think it was Horacio Hermandez :El Negro` From Cuba.
I think the bassist has 6 fingers on his right hand. Certainly a musical force of nature. One of the more easy access songs from Tribal Tech but still stretches my brain to try and keep up. Great composition. Amazing execution. 10/10
They really should have practiced the tune more. The drummer and bass player are all over the place..................just kidding. I bet Scott doesn't miss that big ass rig any. Just awesome playing. Thanks for posting Scott.
This is a cruel and shit world wherein a band like Tribal Tech is almost unknown by 99.9999999%% of the masses. Gary Willis and Scott Henderson and everyone in TT including Kirk Covington and Scott Kinsey are such virtuoso monsters and so ahead of their time in the music they created yet not even the jazz world have I seen them get the recognition they deserve. This is the kind of shit that makes me despise most humanity.
Seriously, their 2 best cds are the compilation Primal Tracks & 95s Reality Check. After that, their solo stuff took precedence & TT cds became rare, & kinda lackluster exercises in Fuzak- boring funk fusion tuneless jamnoodling. Their last CD Ten really teed me off as there's a kinda bonus track parody of ELP style classic Brit progressive.
Keith Emerson had recently committed suicide from depression, & then Greg Lake (& several other Brit contemporaries) all died from colon cancer. I thought it was in very poor taste for TT to be mocking Brit progressive rock - extremely poor & callous timing. Would that Tribal Tech had given ITS fans the same level of effort & professionalism in the 2000s that those Brit stalwarts had given theirs.

I'm gonna go for the old soul vs style and say I wasn't really impressed with GW's solo. I like him though, and I really like this song and this whole album, he has a cool taste in notes and his tone is legendary. Jaco had a greater delicacy about him when playing, and each note in any of his solos has a purpose and builds to a powerful colorful conclusion. Can't help but compare the two since they're the most two prominant fretless "fusion"ers around (or were around :P)
