- TWA is very excited to announce our first signature model, as well as our first collaboration with TubeScreamer creator Susumu Tamura - the Scott Henderson SH9 Signature Distortion.
With the SH9, Mr. Tamura has taken the basic SD-9 circuit architecture that he invented in 1981 and re-worked it to meet Scott Henderson’s exacting performance standards.

This is not just a pedal comparison, THIS IS THE BEST LESSON ON TONE THAT YOU CAN FIND ON RUclips.
No doubt! I always thought I was weird for doing this with all my overdrive and distortion pedals, nitpicking the tiniest of details but to me, it matters!!
It's Scott Henderson
It is.
That was a good video 😊
YES
I first saw Henderson 40 years ago at the GIT, he blew us away back then, and now I was able to see him again a few weeks ago in a club in Hamburg, while many other great guitarists who were getting on in years are losing energy, SH still radiates the same youthful joy, I wish I could see him more often, he is pure inspiration
I first saw Scott at Greco’s Pizza on Hollywood Blvd.
Scott Henderson is absolutely legendary. So glad I caught him a few times at the Baked Potato. His Tore Down House album has my favorite overdriven Strat tones, esp on Mocha and the title track.
Dolemite has the best most amazing rock guitar solo in guitar history. period.
I think, Scott can play any pedal or amp, the sound in his hand is always amazing.
He can. I actually seen him in a small rehearsal room rocking the shit out a Peavy Bandit in the late 90s.
It is extremely subtle, but then this is the master of tone. Despite he can make sound a mop like an Stradivarius, I think I really get what he is trying to explain. Then again Scott has to have really a very hard time when he is setting up his gear due to his search for the ultimate perfect tone. Then his playing, the perfect mix between the most beautiful sweet guitar with the most outrageous and ferocious style, mixing flawlessly an extremely overdriven classic Strat and no less than a endless vocabulary deep into be bop and blues. There is no other guitar player like Scott Henderson. Not even close. And you know what if you are not familiar with this guitar genius, Listen to Dolemite from his album Tore Down House where he plays what in my humble opinion is the best rock solo ever, and after that listen to Calhoun from the album Vibe Station. This last tune, I played for a friend on the stereo the other day and he told me afterwards, man there is absolutely nothing I would listen to now half as good as that tune. Scott. King of guitar.
Can only agree to every word you said!
I wish more pedal comparisons were like this, great stuff Scott!
I've always heard git guys talk about how Scott has some serious ears for nuance.....damn, they're right
I've been using an old SD9 for over 10 years now. I'm sold
Now this is super neat! Interesting to see long time SD9 users like Scott and Landau moving to new versions
What's Landau using these days?
@@lightningstrikes7314he's got a custom sd9 style from vemuram called the butter machine..ruclips.net/video/g-QrAuV4Kdo/видео.htmlsi=uJAJi-vRMMcwete1
He (Landau) uses Vemuram pedals. He has a signature pedal with them called the Butter Machine. It's pricey, but it's incredible to be honest
I love how Scott rocks the big dogs shirt in roughly half the interviews he's done the last decade.
This is awesome!
I just bought one! 😀
I first saw you back in the mid 80’s on a video Chick Corea Electrik band live in Barcelona and I bought Your Tribal tech album Spears , great to see you still playing great 👏
This is an awesome video, pedal, and artist. Scott is so good.
That SH9 sounds great.
Excelente Master tengo 66 años y sigo aprendiendo contigo Gracias por compartir ..Desde Argentina te mando un abrazo enorme..Cuídate mucho..
Genius. Best tone lesson ever.
The best and smart pedal test ever.
Scott forgot to mention that the SH9 also has a lot more volume than the SD9
I just saw this pedal reviewed in Guitar World and got very curious after searching and burning through pedals that didn't match up to the hype. Went to RUclips and saw this demo from Scott. So I killed the curiosity and took the little pricey leap and got it. Well worth the money and this is a pedal is a KILLER with the tones, 💯satisfied, a pedal that will finally stick to my board!!!
You just opened up my ears , great video good tips 👍🏻👍🏻
Definitely smoother love it i need one
A great demo. I loved this pedal when I first heard Mike Hermans demo it a few weeks back
Of course, you can't really judge the sound in a RUclips video, but the SH9 seems to be a awesome overdrive pedal
Wow very even all over the neck and with super clarity!
That pedal sounds ridiculously good. I'd love to give that a spin with a Vox or a Bad Cat.
Thanks, Mr. Henderson.
Purchased! Cant wait for it to arrive! Thanks Scott 🙏🏻 much love!
I can hear the differences. Before this I don't think I would have listened for it.. Great stuff..
Great demo Scott! Look forward to receiving the SH9! 👍🏼🎸😊
ooook! I might have to move onto the SH9 from my SD9. Wow, great stuff Scott. Thank you.
I also notice you don’t need to dime the volume on the new one. I know it’s not an issue for many but that’s been a downside to the SD-9 for me. Nice. Thanks!
The SH9 does the oooeee thing that Holdsworth mentioned as being a goal at some point, and the SD9 does more of that eeeooo thing in the middle of the neck, boo. Still, rad lick at 9:31 with the SD9!
From one mr.henderson to another, thank you for the lesson.right on the $$.TONE MATTERS.
both pedals sound great
Nice sound, great Mr.Henderson 👌
Sounds like a little bit more articulation in the upper mids. Like it. Thanks Scott, been a fan for a while, not just your playing but your tone as well.
its a lo mid freq band. You can use a parametric eq to solve this issue. Plus an eq pedal improves the versatility of your rig in live situation
it's so funny. the things he describes as bad i somehow love from listening to him so much. but i get the improvement for sure. really an actual upgrade. the price is a bit hefty tho, if you're broke like me
TWA And Scott really get an even better pedal than Maxon SD 9 is. Scott is really a master !
Scott turned me on the Xotic and Zvex years ago, man whutta monster player!
Can't wait until the pedal arrives at my doorstep! Also, still waiting for the "Standers" calendar to drop! 😂
The pedal sings...Great tone
This was super insightful
Legendary Scott Henderson
Oh yes!
I appreciate this pedal and Scott's commentary, but as someone who's seen Scott describe the SD-9 without reservation as the best distortion pedal ever made, it feels a little strange to see him finding fault with it to this extent.
The SD-9 is a great pedal, but anything can be improved on. You can't do a proper comparison without pointing out the faults of the thing you improved. I admit these improvements are subtile, but to people who are serious about tone, they're important. I could still do a gig with a stock SD-9 and be totally fine - these improvements are more noticeable in the studio than live.
I have a Maxon SSD-9 and an SH9 on the way. I wonder what is different about the circuit? 🤔😊
I was waiting for this pedal to be released since you announced it, Scott. I think this might be the best drive pedal ever. Can't wait for mine to arrive so I can try it. Congrats! BTW I like purple. :)
I wonder if it is possible to get rid of those annoying frequencies by using an EQ pedal after the SD-9. Maybe you could turn down the spiky highs and the muffely basses?
absolutely!
Yes, but it would most likely change the tonality of the pedal/overdrive too much in a different sort of way. Definitely worth a try!
I run all my pedals through or after the Boss EQ-200. I do have an ‘81 Ibanez SD9, and the SH9 on the way. 😎
soundind very good! but why there're so much different Level setting between two pedals?
Mr. Tamura added more volume to the SH9, for some people who play through cleaner amps and need more volume to get distortion.
one of my guitar heroes S.H yeah!!
What a player!!!!!
Tone might improve with a guitar loaded with humbuckers, like a Fender HSS Strat or Gibson Les Paul. Glad someone improved on the Ibanez SD-9.
AnalogMan has a few mods for both the Ibanez SD-9 Sonic Distortion and TS-9/TS-808 Tube Screamer. Who ever has the most Guitar EFX Pedals WINS.
hi why dont ya just mail Scott some of those humbuck-lowdead gtrs?
Totally the opposite. You can never get a better tone with humbuckers because the pickup window”is wrong”.
I have the SH9 but it’s very noisy. A constant hiss when on. Is Scott using a noise gate? I love it but man I can’t kick it on without the constant hiss!
Great video! Hot pedal. Get some.
A class act!
Where can I get one? Very cool comparison!
You can grab one on our website: www.godlyke.com/sh9
We JUST started shipping these so you may want to grab your spot in line soon. 🙂
For the price, I’ll just stick to sd9 lol
I wonder who introduced the sd9 to who? Scott to Mike or Mike to Scott?
Nice review!
I wish there were tabs for that lick he play over and over
The famous Scott Henderson stare …. hehe
DOG PARTY!! Love this guy..................
I hear consistency
this video is kind of funny; nothing but respect, but analyzing the subtlest minutia of a simple 3-knob overdrive pedal is kind of funny. The SH9 sounds great & looks great
scott is under rated as a player
Скотт лучший!!!👍🎶✌️
281€ plus shipping plus customs.... just insanely priced! Come on guys... that can't be THAT expensive!!!!
If you order it from EffektBoutique in Germany you can save on customs and shipping depending on where you are. If you have any other issues getting your hands on one in Europe, please email me: info@godlyke.com
@@GodlykeInc You must be kidding! They sell at 369€!!! So I'm going to pay for their gain AND their customs. This pedal is WAAAAY overpriced at the source!
Rams Hat ❤️
Wondering if this pedal is made in Japan?..
It's manufactured in the US but a lot of the components are shipped from Japan.
That's gonna be my new line "I'm not digging that frequency, dude" lol
Just because he's one of my favourite players doesn't mean he can design a great distortion pedal. Seems he has though.
Oh And Scott? I just noticed that you have the LEVEL KNOB SET REALLY LOW FOR THE SD9 AND THE TONE KNOB FOR THE SH9 ALOT HIGHER! : / THAT WILL DEFINITELY CUT ALOT OF TONE OUT FROM THE SD9.... HOW ABOUT ANOTHER COMPARISON WITH ALL KNOBS ON THE SAME POSITIONS FOR BOTH PEDALS...
Mr. Tamura added much more volume to the SH9 - this was to help players who need more gain from cleaner amps, so a comparison with the knobs set at the same volume would not have worked - the SH9 is much louder than the SD-9.
@@scott686 Ahh Ok, well i didnt know that previously. If you are the Scott i think you are? Than i hope you also saw my compliments too! : ) have a happy thanks giving!
@@scott686 : / wait a minute Scott. I just re read my original comment. I said THE TONE KNOB WAS SET REALLY LOW. NOT THE VOLUME. TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
@@rockybalboa2526 Happy Thanksgiving to you too Rocky! One of the main problems with the SD-9 is that a very annoying frequency shows up when the tone knob is turned up, so I wanted to show that it doesn't happen with the SH-9. The two tone knobs were set so that both pedals have the same amount of treble, but the SH9 has a more pleasing flavor of treble than the SD-9.
@@scotthenderson7795 Hey. Thank you for getting back to me personally. I can hear that difference. There is also alot more "presence and depth" with the new pedal that i can hear. Im going to get one. I will add it to my existing distortion sound for added musical punch. I enjoy your playing, style and sounds. Im not a big fusion guy though, but i like your playing and approach and expressiveness on guitar. I just became aware of YOU from that signature pedal video. I have since reviewed some of your career and playing, and sounds.. I would have liked to have found out about you sooner. But, i do have youtube to catch up.. : ) be well and keep doing what you do.. ( on guitar ) Any new instrumental records coming out in the near future? Let me know.. Thank you again Scott, i really appreciate you taking the time to write back to me personally. Oh, let me know if you are ever going to be in New York? I would like to see you play live. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family too..
♥♥♥
sorry but for me, from 1:00 to me the sd9 sounds great with more attack and responsive to the touch! The Sh9 plays just behind. Tastes ;-)
My opinion is that you'll change your mind if you get the chance to compare them live. As an SD-9 user for over 20 years, the SH9 kicked its ass on my last two tours.
@@scotthenderson7795 Wow Mr Henderson tnx for reply!! My master configuration is klon centaur silver with Fender Sup.Reverb '68 and CAE head and Suhr gtr from a long time with some variable of pedals.
i've seen several concerts and frequented some your masterclasses. Y're simple GREAT, love and respect you like Man and Musician!
Ok i hope to check the new SH9 as soon as possible.
A huge hug
@@NicoDAlessio Thanks Nico! I love the Klon too, and find that it's a bit fatter than the SH9 for the bridge pickup, but not nearly as useful for the neck pickup. That's why I keep using the SH9 on my board cause I switch between pickups a lot.
What's the delay pedal?
It's not a pedal, it's EchoBoy, a Soundtoys plug-in.
I can never hear the tone discrepancies guitarists talk about 🙂
They exist but in their minds.
Dang that sounds so fat and smooth!
日本でも販売して欲しいです!
Where do I buy the pedal?

Thanks for the interest! We hit a few production delays with the chassis, so we're working on fulfilling all the current back orders. Once that's done we'll continue to ship these in the order we receive them. We should be able to have this as an "in stock" item by the end of September, but if you'd like to get it sooner, feel free to pre-order one on our website www.godlyke.com/sh9
I guess I have to get one lol
top !
I Can hear the Difference.
Scotts - the shit :)
coot😊
Great sounding pedal, but $300 is a non-starter. Would have paid $200, but I got a used SD9 and a bypass loop pedal instead for around $100.
9:31
What's with Maxon these days?owned now by twa looks like.
The difference is barely noticeable! Not sure if it’s worth $300 bucks!!!
cool but the main difference is the guy can "play da guitar" ; )
This nice note is not about the pedal but about Scott's incredible fingers. Don't buy the pedal! Buy Scott's fingers !
If we could figure out how to bottle and sell Scott's fingers, we would. Until then, we'll just have to settle for this pedal.
SD9 : an irritated mosquito trapped in a honey jar
SH9 : A vegetarian Mosquito in a Manuka Honey jar
I was wondering when the haters would come out, but if that's the meanest thing anyone says, I guess we're OK. 🙂
@@scotthenderson7795 Oh dear.. but that's not what I meant .... I think it blew up in my face.. I am really sorry, but my comment was misconstrued.
For the record , Scott, you are one of my top 5 most favourite players/writers of all time . I mean it.. Saw you live several times I am also a regular listener to " guitarwank." podcasts.I now realise my comment was evidently clumsy, I was trying to stress the superiority of the SH9 over SD9 ( I myself regularly us drive my amp with Maxton OD-820...)
Vegetarian mosquito = friendly , does not sting, Manouka = arguably the best honey around.
I repent and apologise unreservedly..
@@panavisionnot7180 No worries and thanks for the explanation! Look at the comment below yours - this guy thinks the SH9 sounds like Trump, which is like calling it the worst pedal ever made by anyone, anywhere. I'll take the mosquito in the honey jar!
@@scotthenderson7795 Thank you so much for taking time to reply and dispel my guilt and misery , Scott..
I think his comment may be exacerbated by a severe case of tinnitus and some chemicals..
P.S. The lesson I take from this : refrain from making "wise" guy comments particularly during JD infused incoherence late at night..
BTW . Your gig at RS in April 2019 , particularly the Wayne Short tune was the best thing I saw and heard in years..
@@scotthenderson7795 If Trump were a pedal, he’d be the Boss Metal Zone - awful to listen to, and useless in virtually every situation.
WOOFIE
Love Scott, but how annoying to listen to repetitively...
The SD9 has ALWAYS sucked
Please get a hair cut
Interesting to see just how he thinks of tone
It is the classic guitar player paranoid.
