The Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu, of which Seki Sensei is the 22nd headmaster, was one of the most popular Ryuha styles during the Edo period. In our golden age, we had over 7,000 students nationwide. Today, we only have 100 students. Our dream is to revive the golden age of Asayama Ichiden Ryu while Seki Sensei is still the headmaster. We want future generations to remember Seki Sensei as the legendary Sōké who brought back the glory of our Ryuha. Your donations will be used to cover Shogo's travel expenses to visit the main dojo from Kyoto, RUclips video shooting costs, online lesson operation costs, and training camps in Japan and overseas.

Love the Jo staff so much, the most practical weapon you can use!

You mean on this era? Then yes, it is indeed one of the most practical ones and you can legally carry one as long as you use it for walking hahaha, same with a Bo Staff, but those are very long and more encumbering

@@jestfullgremblim8002 yeah, I was thinking of modern non-lethal weapons that you can carry in the open. No one suspects the cane or stick lol.

@@TheCCBoi yeah then you are probably right. It could be argued that some other things could potentially be better (at least on some situations) but the Jō is up there at the very least

I wonder what Seki Sensei would think of a messer/kriegsmesser. That'd probably be the closest European sword to the Katana, but there are a lot of subtle differences in how it feels and how you use it.

At 2:30, he could rotate the blade and slice upward to give him a counter to rotate his hand placement again to come back down with an angled slash. Thrust with a sword is very dangerous for his opponent as long as they are skilled with a sword. Rotation of the blade to correct your movements after being countered is crucial in sword play. Movements show be flowing like water, especially with a curved blade. Also, foot placement is very important. All in all, great videos, but it would be cool to see more technical steps such as combos or 3-part counters. At the point he ensnared his hands, one hand the katana and the trap is no longer viable. Especially when the other hand can now grap the staff to control where he wants to cut.

Yes you could rotate and slash back up, but part of training is to detect these intent in body signs and pick the right counter.

There is another weakness to the thrust. You are less likely to quickly incapacitate or kill your opponent furthermore, your blade can get caught up or jammed. This can leave you vulnerable to a counterattack.

Would be interesting how seki sensei would utilise the pistol grip/hook handle end of a walking stick considering its about the same length as the short Jo staff. Just curious as I once read that westerners had a whole gentleman's defense with a walking stick/cane back in the victorian era I think...just something I saw mentioned in some history books.

How do we safe the sharp edge from fighting? or at least keep it longest sharp in the battle.

Sensei Seki? Is it okay if you go over the “Kogen Style/Silent Form” from The Sword of Doom, also known as 大菩薩峠 (Dai-Botatsu Togē) The Main character uses this style, and it was talked over many times in the film, is it a real Style? I heard it is based off of Mizoguchi-ha Itto-ryu? Please explain if possible!

Sensei may enjoy watching videos of the Portuguese staff fighting known as Jogo Do Pao. It uses the staff in very interesting ways. Since the Portuguese visited Japan during the period when swords were still being used it may have historical interest for him.

Hm. How much of this was adapted from defense against an attacker using a Bo? A thrust attack from a Bo should be somewhat stronger due to the hands being farther apart granting more leverage to resist the Bo being struck aside. Also, the inserting of the end of the staff between the hands of an attacker using a sword would not work as well.
Still, it seems to me that variations on these techniques could work against a Bo.
