Loving game but not used to having to recheck places so I missed out on pretty much all extra characters. I'm on new planet. Should I just keep going forward to the end or restart 😢.
I am having so much fun playing this game. The amount of freedom you have only a few hours in is so engaging. I cannot emphasize how great it was watching your video yesterday showcasing the power of pick pocket and skill use. Please let the next star ocean be like this. This will age like wine
The crazy thing is that most of these features I'm pretty sure are in the original game, or at least were only expanded on here but still there. There's a reason it's the fan favourite!
After the first couple of areas where It's a linear path, you're pretty much free to explore. I love that about the game because the first couple of mandatory things to do take you a few hours tops to complete.

I like how Welch went from one of the worst character to the literally most op character in late game. I could wipe enemy basically instantly not caring about their shield with Slappity Slap. If you plan on doing post-game content she's really handy. Ha! Get it? 😁
This this right here is how you make a freaking remake. They did so well on this on literally every aspect and i hope this gets enough attention for Tri-Ace to remake more of theirs games like radiata stories
Quick note on the effort skill: it's necessary for leveling up train. And train gives an *obnoxious* boost to experience. It's absolutely insane how easy it is to power level your characters with train, that special experience formation, and chaining 5 fights together.

This will cause enemies to appear on screen at a high rate that you can easily chain together to get 5. Lastly, you will want to set the formation to free-fight when you get it (forgot where). It gives a 50% increase to FOL and EXP when fully chained. You can literally chain 5 fights together that give 3x the base experience, plus another 50%, plus DOUBLE the experience on the individual character. Literally giving you 9x the experience, while fighting 5 fights in one (40x over what you could get in the original game)
and if you make exp cards and SOLO those fights Claude can get like 90,000 exp FROM 5 battles in a row Lasguss Mountains but you still NEED his Marvel sword equipped BEFORE going their on earth mode.
@@veghesther3204 The good news about that is it's easier than ever to get goodie boxes. One of the beginner missions will give one to you for completing 10% of the item encyclopedia, and I might be wrong about this but I believe I ended up fishing another 2 (I had to identify them so I might have picked it up through a chest or something, as I didn't ID everything the second I got it) Either way I had Sword of Marvels and Sorcerer gloves before I even stepped into Marz. Missions make breaking the game easier than ever too, like getting customize to lvl 10 will give you the Mithril you need to make Aeterna(Eternal Sphere)
I agree. Train is one of the most ideal skills to level up first. Combine that with scouting, the exp formation and 5 chain battles then leveling is going to be a breeze. I think all of my characters were level 130 before leaving expel. Better if you have the Marvel sword or the Aeterna sword. I could easily level up to 150 it was becoming a little tiring.
Another important thing to know (unless that changed in the remake?). You can manipulate the friendship and romance levels using the books you get through publishing. Using a common book on someone will set their friendship level for the author to 8, and the rare books will set the romance level to 8. That should be done as soon as possible to get the pairings you want. 10 is needed for two characters to get an ending together. By the way, just in case you didn't know: everyone can be paired with everyone, and most male/female pairings are romantic.
You can still do this, but relationship values have changed in the remake. It's represented on the status screen as hearts for each character. You can have up to 5 hearts for each character. Still affected by PAs and books made through Publishing. It's even easier to get certain ending pairings in the remake.

I don't think I've ever gotten Earnest in any of my playthroughs, and with Second Story R, I'm determined to finally get every character between my two playthroughs! Also, there's something kind of hilarious about Rena, this sweet, good natured girl from a small town, just nicking random stuff out of people's pockets xD
Your in for a treat. Make sure to take advantage of having Ernest in your party by going to Marz and Linga, activate PA's and find Ernest. You really got me contemplating throwing away my first playthrough almost 20 hours deep of mainly grinding Celine and Ashton and putting all my SP into effort and train...

How do you deal with running out of MP? My AI party members just spam all their skills until they run out and they just stand there doing nothing after they use up all MP, no matter what tactics I set them too. Either that or they just do the purely melee, no skills strategy
After waiting 25 years to play this again, I bought the DVD for my PS5, popped it in, and got an error that the disc could not be read. Yep, my disc drive broke on my PS5 the day I FINALLY get Second Story

I'm loving the remake so much, I'm only about 7 hours in, but it's bloody brilliant. The only thing that slightly met me down was the destruction of Kurik(I remember it being called Click in the OG) being in game graphics, a wee cut scene here would have been epic.
Yeah I noticed as well, also they took out the Tsunami that destroyed the town after the Earthquake which felt a little disappointing, I was looking forward to seeing it in action.
Absolutely loving this remake so far! Leon/Dias aren't mandatory though, you can choose to not recruit them and leave a spot for anyone else you might like.
It's been killing me waiting to watch your videos on this. lol I finished the game with my kids a day or two ago, and now I feel safe to consume all things SO2 R. I know that's a weird thing to say on a video to help beginners, but I was avoiding "spoilers". Heh. Also, I could easily play through again, and I'm sure I missed a ton! :)
The developers had the choice to fix some "gamebreakers", but they were like, "Nah, we're doubling down." Don't have a main character with nimble fingers? In the original, you reroll -- you can't get the skills to learn it in time for that Kurik/Klik PA. In this, it's not as big a deal because so many of the skills are available so early. You can learn crafting and get the talent. Like, such a good "quality of life" update LMAO. Also, new super specialties like BODYGUARD. Scouting + Bodyguard = literally just run around bopping hundreds of enemies and farming for FOL
Idk i think maxing effort is fully worth it since hitting lvl 9/10 training is just a perma stat boost to exp add in a exp card on top of a x5 battle and leader battles as the exp is very very insain if u play ur cards right i ran to the canyon in the early game as i always do and netted 62000 exp went from 17-27 and those kinda exp gains only get better just hit 50 and just went across the sea already wrote every book for every character (thats a huge thing to note lvling fariyology etc becomes much easier via books u can write as u can.lvl them all to 7 saveing urself 1000s of points
Aaahhhhhh it caaameee! I love this game. I feel right at home, for the first time, with very close friends I'm only just meeting. I genuinely feel like I've played this game before, but for the very first time. It's truly magical. I really hope this game is successful, and is indicative of Square doing the same with Xenogears. I would fucking die. But, that 2nd disc would never, ever fly. They would need to finish the damn game.
I got to level 20 quickly by finding a rare monster in the very first forest you spawn in and chaining it with another nearby monster. You'll likely need get some leather gear at the very least and as claude, a sword. I think I was around level 7 when I managed to do it. If you're successful you get thousands of experience. Especially if you let the monster spawn more of itself. You can repeat this process as much as you want by running in and out of the room or I think reloading. They don't always appear, sometimes it takes a number of attempts before they show up. They'll always be in the far right side of the forest, you'll know it's there if there are 3 enemies there instead of 2.
Ya wanna know what’s cool? I’m a straight, 35 year old welder working in the oil field. Your a 40 year old buff gay man. And there’s so many more people of different back grounds, religions, race and more all coming together because of our love for rpgs. I’ve been watching u Your videos on a playlists while cleaning and working. Thanks for the vids and just being yourself. I appreciate it.
What do the talent's even do? Does it give you a free level in a skill? Like what benefits does starting with Nimble Fingers get? Can you learn it later?
I love that they buffed characters and made them all good. Especially with all the weapons. And how dare you Welch is amazing and she op. (Ik people hate her, but i like her )
David you already let me know this is the best one, but i found it only necessary to do a proper run on First Departure R so it would just feel better. i always try to do everything in order. i'm about 6 hours into it so far and i absolutely love it, i'm kind of upset that i didn't check this series out sooner! so if you say this one is that much better i literally can't wait to finish First Departure R so i can tackle this, thanks again for the recommendation!!
Fun Fact: First Departure R is a remake that was designed to be more like Star Ocean 2. First Departure was a complete overhaul of The original first Star Ocean game (on SNES). Enix saw the praise that Star Ocean Second Story (PS1) was getting, and decided to remake SO1 using Second Story's game engine and style. Technically, a lot of things that people love about First Departure R, are actually things that were ported over from og Second Story. So in a weird, meta-time-loopy way, Star Ocean 2 could actually be considered the predecessor to First Departure R. (if you are looking for an excuse to play SO2R first. 😜)
Yeah! A lot of modern gamers dont understand how innovative and forward of a leap Star Ocean 2 actually was, because they are comparing it to First Departure, instead of comparing it to the original Star Ocean 1. (Which actually plays a LOT closer to Tales of Phantasia, the first game in the Tales series.) ((Star Ocean, as a franchise, has always kinda been a "Tales" series clone ever since it's inception.))
I ended up with a sprites bracelet without pick pocketing. I also farmed levels by a certain formation on battlefield. I literally sped through the story and didn’t spend time farming and completed the game at level 90. Lol
I was so excited to play the demo thst I neglected to check if I had nimblefingers and found out 5 hours later that Claude didn't have nimblefingers. So a restart is in order. Sometimes you csn unlock a talent but not sure what unlocks nimblefingers.
@davidinc you mentioned you can learn the talent Nimble Fingers. Can you learn it before you meet Phillia? I chose Rena and forgot that talent was imperative to steal and I don’t want to start over now! I’ve been exploring for 7 hours (LOVE the bunny this time around).
So how does a hero begin with/learn "nimble fingers" talent? I haven't played the game yet, so do characters just start off with a talent at random? And how far into the game does it take before you can check? Just wondering if restarting the new game over & over will be a long process or will it be something you can do pretty quick.
Talents are randomized and learning specialties and using them will allow characters to learn more talents, for example my Rena was my cook at the start and she learned taste through just cooking things I needed. Every characters talents are randomized mostly with some learning into some of them. Example Blessings of Mana is something your likely to get with your casters since they're magic users. With Claude and Rena.. and basically everyone it's random but they usually start with Nimble fingers, if anything if you don't end up with 1 of them with the talent your kinda unlucky but also you want the one your playing as to have it because that's the character your going to be using for pickpocketing. So choose Claude, Claude is the one that needs it, choose Rena and she needs it instead. You can check talents as soon as you can access your menu, go to status and (PS4) press square to bring up friendship/talents, you can see which talents a character does or doesn't have on the right side of the screen.
I'm gonna try to get a physical copy of this one if I can. I loved the OG and PSP port and I can't wait to see if this remake can be utterly broken like the original if you know what you are doing. I would like to add that imo Claude's scenario has more cutscenes that flash out the overall plot a bit better and (at least in the OG) you don't have to keep Leon in the party if you don't want him. He forces himself in at one point but later you have the option of just leaving him behind and free up a slot. Not sure if you can do the same in Rena's scenario with Dias, but my guess is that it's possible. I seem to remember that the only two obligatory party member are infact Claude and Rena.
A great sp saver BOOKS before you spend any serious sp is writing it can get a fair few skills to rank 7 saving hundreds if not thousands of sp all for the price of a fountain pen. You can get fountain pens from familiar stork which is rank 5 I believe and pet food from rank 7 familiar so you can repeat the familiar calls.
Just gonna put it out there that writing is the most broken skill by far. I noticed a bit late but I built up Ernest with the writing skill and proceeded to make skill books to max everything out on my characters, you can only go to level 7 of the skill using a book but for skills like Biology that's free HP+ for your whole party and while writing doesn't cover every single skill it's enough that if you can just buy the materials needed to write the books you can unlock basically every super specialty that way for minimum effort. Including things like replication so if you got one counterfiet medal from the spirit amulet than you can start duping it to level to 100 right away. Also not sure if this worked in the PSP version but in the old PS version you could equip dream bracelet, use a counterfiet medal and unequip it and you would level up twice the next battle, this does not work in this new version of the game. And finally like it usually does, counterfiet medals do not work after lvl 100.
In regards to the party planning. For Ashton, i may be misremembering, but can you do his sidequest to the end, then dump him once its all said and done? First run with Claude i want Opera, but the extra exp from doing Ashton's bosses would be nice.
If only the newer star ocean games could bring back some of these old style systems like IC and Specialty skills. Seems like games now a days make every system super simple and basic with little to no depth.
in another video, you recommended pickpocketing, but it affects my friendship. Is there an easy way to improve friendship effectively while taking advantage of the pickpocketing??
Thanks for this! Welsh isn’t good? Oh well. lol *reloads last save point* I wish I’d maxed out determination first. I’m just sort of spreading my points around based on what people’s talents are
You do need the Effort skill to get the Training specialty, so you gave counter points saying not to get Effort skill when you praise the Training specialty.
Nothing beats the original Opening for 2nd evolution. The opening for second Story R just doesn't Deliver. And it's I possible to get *Everyone* in a NG+ playthrough

Just in time to see this recommended to me as I just bought star ocean 2nd story R yesterday. Looking forward to enjoying the game!!!
Just started this, thanks for the hints.
Hope you enjoy it!
David, loving the tips videos. I've never played the OG and can't wait to get into this remake.
Hope you enjoy it!
The way you can make leveling busted so soon is amazing
I remember mapping out who i wanted to recruit when i first played this on PSP. Think ill get different characters this time around
I’ve been watching u
Your videos on a playlists while cleaning and working. Thanks for the vids and just being yourself. I appreciate it.
Thank you for saying so, that means a lot to me!
Fun fact, Celine quickly became my skill mule but also a VERY potent asset in the new assault team feature.
What do the talent's even do? Does it give you a free level in a skill? Like what benefits does starting with Nimble Fingers get? Can you learn it later?
Im so loving this game I can't wait for my next playthrough and use Ashton 😍
Damn this guy has some muscles 🤭
I love that they buffed characters and made them all good. Especially with all the weapons. And how dare you Welch is amazing and she op. (Ik people hate her, but i like her )
Another great video, David. Think you’ll do one on these damn cards? Got an experience one from the fishing NPC and I have no idea what to do with it
I'm late to the party! Thanks for the tips senpai! Great video
Any time!
in the new game plus+ is it possible to have eveyone in the same game ? for example Dias and Leon in claudes start ? thanks
It’s the absolute best game in the series
@@rjenyawdthe OG SO2 was the second JRPG I ever played. Felt SOOO different from FFVII is almost every way, strikingly refreshing.
Thank you for this! Super helpful 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the tips here, David
Any time!
Been using my SO grindset and I've been loving it
Thanks for the tips here David!
You bet!
Found out about the limited party after I already had 7. Stuck witth my motley crew now lol.
Thanx for the heads up David! Ur the best!
David, you are a lifesaver! THANK YOU ❤
Thank you for this video! Gonna buy the game now❤
Is one of them that preorders would sell out but still let you pre-order
First time playing this, vid showed up at the perfect time 🍻
I was thinking of getting the old Prima Strategy Guide to use for this game. Does anyone think it's the right guide to use?
Does Sprite's Bracelet work when equipped on reserve party members?
Just learned this has a new game plus. So everyone is can be in the party in NG+?
Is there way to tell if you have nimble fingers? Or do o have to keep playing the first hour over and over again until I find it?
3:52 , so if im understanding what you said here, you can get all characters together in new game plus? Or did you mean something else lol
One thing that should be considered too: Precis cannot obtain her most powerful skill if you didn't recruit Ashton.
I only played it when it first came out. Exited to get going on it!
im having a god damn blast as expected with the game so far
This is a fantastic video! I love star ocean and I'm really enjoying the remake. Its so good.
It's so good!
Yep, at least in the original game, the only characters the game forces you to have are Claude and Rena.
Love your vids and the passion you have for 'em. Pre ordered this game and stoked to play!
Lol , you weren’t lying when you said this is your favorite game.
do you think that the way how you ranked all playable characters from the PS1 version would remain the same with the remake??
Definitely helpful 😊
Any melee fighter should dump massive SP into customization. The weapons you can craft are game breaking in their power
Here I am giving Claude a Harem and Rena the Reverse Harem
You can't and he still SUCKS.
That is what I did, dumped him in the cave
If only the newer star ocean games could bring back some of these old style systems like IC and Specialty skills. Seems like games now a days make every system super simple and basic with little to no depth.
How do I make my characters not get one shotted by the wise men even if I’m level 91 on universe
I did find it useful to get a LITTLE in effort to unlock TRAIN, but going past level 5 is just silly.
Great tips but how do you actually earn these specific skills and specialty skills? Will the game inform me how to get them?
Always forget that about Effort when I play this game, but the remake makes getting SP quite a bit easier so it’s fine 🙃
My biggest thing is should I get it for the ps5 or switch
in another video, you recommended pickpocketing, but it affects my friendship. Is there an easy way to improve friendship effectively while taking advantage of the pickpocketing??
Yup, publishing helps with friendship values.
Thanks for this! Welsh isn’t good? Oh well. lol *reloads last save point*
I wish I’d maxed out determination first. I’m just sort of spreading my points around based on what people’s talents are
You do need the Effort skill to get the Training specialty, so you gave counter points saying not to get Effort skill when you praise the Training specialty.
This is my first RPG. I am 5 to 6 hours in and only in the third City. I just try to learn what to do.
Love your channel. As a fellow gaymer, you are spot on all the time.
Thanks so much!
You can craft goodie boxes through art.
Nothing beats the original Opening for 2nd evolution.
The opening for second Story R just doesn't Deliver.
And it's I possible to get *Everyone* in a NG+ playthrough
