I'm actually kinda wondering if he didn't realize high-speed mode was on? Like he turned it on accidentally and just thought that's how the game was. Like, it seems to be on in literally 100% of the clips in this video.

Lol I think it was to bypass copyright issues. A lot of reviewers speed up the footage, but luckily modern Trails just has it built in

@@jesserivera2043 Serously! he complains about the meter moving way too fast, but that's literally because of turbo mode: The default speed is perfectly manageable, and personally, I had no issues with it whatsoever, once I got used to it.
Do you have to go into the menu to turn it off?
David, I noticed that you use the high speed move while finishing, you need to toggle that off, that's why you only had the light speed wheel.
I never use high speed mode, all the same I'm going to save before each fishing attempt. Gotta complete the fishing journal.

Where did you hear that Calvard will be a four game arc? Admittedly, I have heard this before, but nobody provides any sources or explanations. Unless the explanation spoils Kai, of course...

I just finished Daybreak, which was my first, and already preordered this one. I like a couple of the things you complained about. I love procedurally generated dungeons and I think the idea of splitting the party up into multiple teams makes sense. Agnes might as well be Van's partner at this point. Anyway, I can't wait, and I'm most excited to customize and play with Celis. She's the coolest!
I honestly wouldnt recommend playing Daybreak 2 if youve only played Daybreak 1. Daybreak 1 was the same very unique situation as Cold Steel 1 where it was fine to play in a vacuum but every game after it had required knowledge from previous arcs. Daybreak 2 in particular has a LOT of callbacks to Trails in the Sky 3.

Correct but when your doing the HACKING MINI game for opening those sealed chests turn the mode OFF High speed mode WILL drain the hacking timer at triple the rate but all that happens is that when that timer hits zero you will fail that mini game.
Daybreak 2 doesn't actually have a BATTLE that has a countdown timer to end it in under 5 minutes only Ao No Kiseki did for that 1 boss.
Just saying, the dodge and the R2 power attacks were both in the first Daybreak
Also the achievement system was also in the first Daybreak and was somewhat introduced in Reverie

Honestly, the first Daybreak made the antagonists feel like anime filler arc villains, but I absolutely loved the party, connections to the older games, gameplay, and the country's culture.
I was informed by Kiseki Nut how out of place and divisive Daybreak 2 would be, but I'm still going to play it because I heard underdeveloped characters would shine more.
Right now I'm finally playing Tales of Arise, and that installment is giving big Trails energy, so I'll play through that first before Daybreak 2, because most of us will be playing that to get better context for Kai no Kiseki.
I am going to play Daybreak 2 as well since I'm pretty sure it lines things up for Kai when that eventually gets a western release.

I think this is like the most critical I have heard you been, especially for a trails game. Still, it was well done and gets me... interested in playing this.
So I noticed your footage has you fishing with highspeed mode on. Not sure how it works in this game but in previous trails games I had to turn that off while fishing for it to work properly
As a bit of backround information, Daybreak 2 was actually supposed to release way later in Japan than it originally did, but Ys 10, which was developed at the same time as this game, was facing development issues at the time and was not getting ready for its planned 2022 Release Date. As a result, Daybreak 2 got swapped with Ys 10 and released one year earlier than it originally was supposed to, so Ys 10 could be developed as planned. Therefore, this game is indeed an experimental filler title and Kondo even said in an interview that a lot of younger staff worked on this game to experiment and get experience. Stuff that happens in game development sometimes I guess. At least the sequel, Kai, does not run into similar issues from what I have read, and the sequel to that has not even been announced yet, so they are taking their time on that as well. Could simply be that Falcom had trouble with their still pretty new engine at the time.
So if you go in with that knowledge that this game is an experimental filler game that does not continue the overarching story in a big way but still offers some really good character moments and development, you should still have a really good time with this one.
Still gonna be an exciting Trails Year, with this, the Sky Remake and maybe even the Sequel, Kai no Kiseki, releasing here. Fingers crossed!
Though it is pretty ironic that this game was moved forward for Ys 10, and then Ys 10 ends up getting a complete edition anyways, so.. that is a bit frustrating. I mean, Ys 10 Base Game was still really good, but still.
Also, there is quite a bit of wrong info in this video. The Dodge and Charge, as well as the achievement system were all in Daybreak 1, while other actually new additions do not get mentioned at all.
Thanks to the comment. Overall would you compare this to Trails of Sky 3rd or Trails of Reverie? Both felt to me like filler but fun.
@ Eh, not really, both of those are essentially big Epilogues with a lot of teasing for the next Arc. Daybreak 2 I would compare more to Cold Steel 2. In that game, Act 1 and 2 were essentially insignificant for the overall story and also had a lot of filler content, and then you had the Epilogue also with a randomly generated dungeon and stuff and.. yeah. But Daybreak 2 picks ideas from Reverie back up like the Marchen Garten which is essentially the Reverie Corridor, and the multiple Routes per Chapter stuff.
If that's the case, i can undersrand the business decision behind it, but it's still a really sad reality that they know they can do whatever they want with a second entry from a trails arc because no matter how insignificant the story may be, or how bad it is received by the critics, people are still going to buy it. I will personally still play it as a fan of the series and to forge my own opinion about it.
@@phendranah Oh for sure, it would be better if they could get out of the "one release per year" structure, but then their investors would be mad. I hate that side of the industry so much. That said, while review score average is a bit lower than Trails usually is, it did not get terrible reviews at all, it is not a terrible game. Think once the Sky Remake and Kai are out over here, reception to this game should become a bit softer as well. Hopefully.
I wasn't expecting such a negative review of a Trails game from you. I agree that it's not that great, but I don't think it's as bad either.
The new additions to combat are good and makes it more interesting, specially on the action part, which was barebones on the previous game.
Even though the main plot didn't advance too much, it certainly did. Characterization is not bad either. I really enjoyed the Intermission myself. And as much hate as Chapter 3 gets, even it had a few interesting things on it.
The difference with other sequel games in the trails series is that.. this isn't one. Daybreak feels like they got an introduction game of the Trails series and was chopped in 2 uneven parts.
It's similar how Cold Steel 1 & 2 worked, but those, which are the introduction games to the Cold Steel arc as a whole, worked as well as an introduction and sequel game whereas daybreak doesn't.
Daybreak (1&2) together is just the introduction game of the Arc.

Mr. David, thanks a lot for this review. I'm currently playing Daybreak 1... I just finished chapter 3 last night... and I've felt a steep decline in the quality of the narrative, character development, etc... I haven't even bought in the new gameplay system, which I feel is inferior to all the previous entries.
It has the coolest graphics? Yeah, but not even Van is of my liking up to this point, and that's a deal breaker for me with the Calvard Arch.
I've felt the game is to westernized for my taste too... It's sad to see Nihon Falcom loose its spark within my favorite RPG franchise of all time. I'll just wait fot the FC remake and hope they don't mess it up.
PS: and I forgot to mention the ost... it's been the worse of all the previous Trails games. Up to the 3rd chapter, the best one imo is the one from the first half of the tine spent in the dessert city for the film festival; my second favorite was the one at the final dungeon of the Langport Arch, at the abandoned mine. The rest of the OST is forgetable and even tiresome in Daybreak 1. I'll definetively skip daybreak 2.
A bit harsh, game is more centered on the gameplay loop and some of it's seeds (what's happening with time and the Geneses), but it has lots of content, great gameplay and it's a solid game despite shortcomings.
Its NOT for everybody but if you don't like this one you not much has changed BETWEEN this game and Kai/Kuro 3 EITHER.

Kind of the FIRST floor of the Marchen Garten is required the other 8 floors during the Main game are ONLY required to get the max SP gain PER chapters end of this game else its not needed.

I take it this arc has too much busy work with little to no story. Its sad because as the cold steel arc the quitly of the story has been going down hill. Awaiting my copy next week.
I’m almost 80 hrs in DB1.. Still with my grandiose backlog i probably won’t be playing this til later this year lol
Look on the bright side, least there's the Sky first chapter remake coming to make up for it. I'm gonna give it a try, because I wanna continue the Calvard story, but I will do my best to be on the lookout for any issues that may arise from my experience. I'm grateful to Falcom, and I hope they continue to make very immersive, fun, and long lasting games.
Question for you guys. I'm looking to start with Daybreak 1. Should I get it on PlayStation or Switch?
Playstation. I'm playing on switch and the framerate drop hinders the experience specially because there's real time combat not only turn based
Get it on your preferred platform of choice. PS5 is obviously better visually & frame rates but Switch version is still playable and a step up visually from the Cold Steel games
When I see the characters die, I feel nothing. They revived characters before anyways.

Bad minigames, bad story, character overflow, fakeout deaths, bad balancing, bad grinding, bad pacing, bad dialogue, bad filler, turbo-mode required, ect. Why stay loyal to the series after it turns out disappointment? You like the little character arc your favorite character got in 2 games? That won't happen again, it's over.
I think Day break II is meant to be sort of a closure to the calvard arc it self were as Kai No kiseki is meant to be an overarching conclusion similar to Azure and Cold steel IV

@@ninototo1 Well what you ask for is a big spoiler on itself but i'll try to answer the best i can since i personally cleared Kuro 2 back in 2022.
It's not fakeout deaths per say but more like badly implemented "bad end" from visual novels, where characters (party and NPCs alike) can dies gruesome deaths but it can be prevented by rewinding the time (thanks to the Genesis) and being able to change the outcomes, unfortunatly, it isn't depending on the player inputs and dialogues choices like visual novels, in this game most of the death scenes are mandatory... not to mention some deaths scenes are ridiculous it actually become hilarious in a bad way, some of them are just so unbelievable.
That's mostly the biggest reason as to why this game wasn't well received in Japan, the writing felt more weaker than usual, especially true in Act 3.

I'm debating to wait on this game for a sale and get like a dragon Pirate Yakuza instead at release! I heard this game while good was a disappointment as someone said in a review it feels like a anime filler arc and not a good one! I love this series and the first Trails thru Daybreak i loved and was one my favorites in the series! Sad to see this one not getting that praise but i hear the next game is amazing!!! But yea i might just get pirate yakuza in Hawii instead! What are thoughts should i wait on this game David?!
I enjoyed the fishing in Ys VIII, so it's crazy to hear the fishing in this one isn't gonna be that great. Also those gardens sound like a bloody nightmare, so I've got that to look forward to now 🤣
Mmm love myself Shadow Hearts judgement rings but man that ring needle was spinning like a sugar high rug rat. Even the fastest spin was not that fast plus you can change the hit area in Shadow Hearts but that fishing game was so wild.

Powered out the first 10 games in a row across a few months. I haven't touched daybreak yet so won't spoil myself but even if the game isn't as good as previous ones, I am sure I'll love it and some surprises.
I love how it felt like a lot of complaints had old man energy. Like, "I can't do this, but at least I can keep replying it." But honestly, besides trails into Sky series, I've never liked the games.

I get you had to have the game done by the time the embargo is up, but these games are best enjoyed taking your time. That being said, I appreciate your in depth review! I love this series with all my soul. That said the one thing I despise about it is the fact that you pretty much have to use a guide. It’s still far too easy to miss thing with zero way of knowing they were even options. I shouldn’t have to use a guide to even have a chance, I’d rather have the challenge based on skill.
it’s so sad to see this. i loved the story in the first game and i was so looking forward to the second. now that i see this, i feel that this is a game that i will not pay full price for… i’d wait patiently….. very patiently for a big sale on it …. thanks for the review!
My predictions based on Reverie and Cold Steel:
-The game itself will be good but less so than Liberl or Crossbell
-One of the console digital versions will screw up and not be downloadable for a few days.
-There will be weird gameplay bugs exclusive to the localization. PC players will be able to fix them pre-patch by using data files from the fan translation.
-Cognitively deficient bigots will whine that something is too woke and start an ineffectual boycott.
Trails into Daybreak (Crimson Sin) the best way i can try to describe it is: a good start, a Very Mixed Middle and an OK End.
I can't stand the entries focused on Pandora or the Reverie Corridor (Sky Third, Into Reverie, and this one)
Ive been struggling to finish CS4 for the past years cause Im more critical of the series than most fans and hearing this isnt motivating me to continue lol. There's a lot of stuff I dislike about the Steel Arc already, if even people that liked Steel get disappointed, things are looking bleak. But at the same time I loooove Sky and Crossbell and it feels bad to drop Trails.
Oof. It comes out the same week as the new Civilization and the new Monster Hunter too. Hopefully they learn from this misstep since this has become my favorite jrpg franchise.
Only Singa could make a soundtrack this generic.

from what i seen most of people dislike it because it feels like a filler story. IMO it's a solid 7/10 game in a series with a lot of 8s or 9s, which is what makes it stand out and seem worse then it actually is.

I’m glad the option exists but why does it seem like rpgs don’t like turn based combat systems? Good turn based systems are some of my favorites because there’s a lot of thought into each action.

Falcom has this really weird habit of trying to improve ideas in concepts with other genes in the series trail of cold steel four is basically trails of cold steel to four better or worse. I just started trails into reverie. I don’t like how they split up the story. I know that they have to because you’re trying to close three arcs in one game and the reverie corridor is how you can level up all your characters at once my main issue with that that you didn’t really say they fixed here which has me scared is you can’t switch out characters who aren’t in your party going into the reserve by just going into the menu you have to go all the way back to the hub no matter how far you are and I’ve only been to the corridor twice and it’s already really annoying. Hopefully this game isn’t like that when it comes to the garden.

a lot of the additions you mentioned were in daybreak 1. the garden just sounds like true reverie corridor 2.0. I've known since it was released in japan as a filler game due to issues with ys 10 that that this game basically has one chapters worth of story stretched out to a whole game, but also "finishes" daybreak from a gameplay standpoint, as the first game had 'new engine' issues. not like it was holding them back, just 'new engine, no bells & whistles yet' held back. though I too loved the complete absence of minigames. I'm _not_ looking forward to them when I get to ff7 rebirth now that it's on pc.
also, you kinda shot yourself in the foot by seemingly using highspeed mode for everything. complaining about stuff being too fast, while "high-speed mode enabled" is up in the corner is totally self inflicted. sorry dude.
despite how negative this comment may sound, still a great video. you just got some stuff wrong, & I'd chalk that up to the forgetfulness you mentioned at the start. lets just hope we get a repeat of this game being announced when daybreak 1 came out & have kai announced on this games full release.

I totally agree with you, David. Sadly, I think the second Daybreak game is one of the weakest in the entire franchise-if not the weakest. It has too much filler-story vibes, and the Märchengarden is horribly annoying and tedious. Like you, I’ve played every Trails game, and this one was really disappointing. I just hope Kai makes it worth the effort I put into enduring it...
I might beat the game on easymode to avoid grinding. I get reverie is fanservice, I LIKED Reverie because it let me play as all my fav characters, I liked Reverie for Nadia, Lloyd resurgence of detective skills and Rufus (well, rufus a little..) and playable arios and the last possible recruitable character who i wont spoil BUT i hated the story in general, it felt a lot like filler in different parts. Its like at the end of CS IV 'we brought peace to crossbell--but heres a literal new conflict 5 mins later so its NOT fixed". Felt forced. Daybreak II feels... MORE forced. I also hate how the party is split up for most of the game in Reverie, I like a little bit more synergy and customization of my teams. I don't like grindiness and im not going to amuse myself with grinding for a game I can almost certainly beat by doing so.. so this might be the first trails games i put on easy.

After having binged the entire series through Reverie in 2023, allowing me to play the story arcs to their conclusions, I decided to hold of on Daybreak I. I didn't want to leave off on a cliffhanger or unresolved plot points. So my question is... Does Daybreak II fully resolve it's arc, or is it left without full resolution to lead into Kai no Kiseki?
Calvard is 4 games arc. But Kai no Kiseki is the only game that ends in a cliffhanger.
Daybreak 2 is a game they were not supposed to make, but they did since they couldn't release Ys X that year. On paper it is kinda like a filler game, but it's most likely that this game will playout a relevant role in the future, like Sky the 3rd.
I’m a Cold Steel guy(And I quite like Sky too..) I’m still on Daybreak 1.. I can’t say the characters & world are bad but I’m just not feeling it nearly as much.. The gameplay makes up for it however..
Def like Van better than Lloyd.. But he’s no Rean or Estelle..
@Mintcar923 Funny enough, I'm more a Crossbell guy. Lloyd is my fav, while the games I least liked were CS2 and SC.

@Mintcar923 in the same way I'm not a fan of Sky SC first half (ch3 is good, but till Bose the game was less interesting and more formulaic than FC chill discovering journey). CS2 starts strong, but the conflict and Thors academy position in the civil neutral in a sorta weird way, plus act 2 being borderline filler. Final act is great, but, then the complete epilogue requires new game plus... That deeply annoys me. Still good and memorable, but not that much my coup of tea.
@@rindou97 Hmm i guess it’s one of those situations where art can be perceived in different ways.. I didn’t think there was ever a dull moment in CSII.. Maybe except for the Blueblanc segment which wasn’t my thing.. However admittedly you really have to play the first game in its entirety to truly appreciate it.. The series was recommended to me as a Suikoden fan and i couldn’t be more impressed to have found it.. It is possible I feel this way about CS because i played it first.. Maybe if I played one of the others first I’d feel differently
I really hope that I disagree with you on this one! I'm still very much looking forward to jumping back into Trails in only a few short days away. I actually saved the last hour-or-so of Daybreak so that I could end the game and then smoothly transition into Daybreak 2. If it's bad, then at the very least I could see myself spacing this one out, too, until we get Kai... I've avoided spoilers, but almost all non-spoiler feedback I've seen for Kai has been extremely positive, many say it's their favorite Trails game, so maybe this is one of those "it's always darkest before the dawn" situations. Anyway, thanks for the review, and I really hope to find I think you're wrong! 😂

Literally everything I dislike about Trails games all combined into 1 game 😭 But I’m in too deep so I have to play but OMG the absolute worst game in the entire series. Shame too cause Daybreak 1 is up there as my favorite in the Trails series.

Not his best review. Pretty much what I heard from it was.There's too much gameplay, and the fishing mechanic is hard. Nothing about the story.Nothing about the world building nothing about the character development. So if you're not big into r p g gameplay, then I guess you skipped this. Not his best review at all
Ya those weren't the flaws. The flaws were the characters development being destroyed in the game. Too many out of character moments that have too many plot holes. And just repeatable bad plot elements. It's a game that start off well but story falls off bad at mid game.

My daughter will not like the fishing game here ! Just ridiculous why ? 😂😂. Sounds like they really screwed this one up! they rushed this out the door and used that dungeon to make the game seem longer then it is i definitely don't like what I'm hearing here .😢😢

Daybreak 2 is a filler game that exists because Ys X was not ready for 2022.

Hey David! Thanks for the honest review. I’m sure it was tough to deliver this verdict on a “Trails” game. I’ll be buying it and playing it due to the series investment piece that you covered, but admittedly I’m dreading the experience a little… that said, I adore the “Daybreak” cast and look forward to meeting even more new characters, and I’m personally curious to see if the Märchen Garten will be a handy feature when my play window is too short to tackle a main mission, but I still want to spend a little time in the “Trails” world.
Also, I know there will be varying opinions on this issue, but for me they have really “jumped the shark” in respect to over-the-top character designs, nonsensically revealing costumes, gratuitous/lingering T&A shots, “jiggle physics” and the like… I’m not a prude, and I can even appreciate when a beloved series tries a more “adult” approach to storytelling (FFXVI is a hallmark example, lack of turn-based combat notwithstanding), but with “Trails” there’s just too much “ickyness” now that detracts from the world building and narrative qualities that forged the reputation of this series in the first place - and I think a lot of the superficial dialogue and surface-level characterization that you noted as weighing down this entry is probably a direct product of this shift.

The bad story and pacing aside, one thing I hate the most about this game is how they utilize the time loop. I know trails series never give a victory to the good guy, not until the end of the game where you usually get a somewhat satisfying victory, but this game take it to the next level, to the point our heroes looks incompetent. Not to mention our team is stacked with a lot of top dog like Zin, Shizuna, Yin and 2 Gralsritter.
I´ll get into this once I finished Dragon Quest. Thank you for the expert opinion!

Oh no... I HATED the RNG dungeon part of trails into Reverie. Had I known this, I would have skipped it like I skipped Trails in the Sky 3rd Chapter. I can't stand this kind of game design.
Looks like I'm gonna have to skip this one.

Skipping Sky 3rd was great for me because instead of ending a good series, I was able to enjoy Cold steel and my favorite in the series, crossbell arc.
I'm a story first guy, so I'll drop a game with bad game design... Or more accurately, game design I personally dislike .
