Doris Day is the most underrated actor in Hollywood history. She could sing, dance, perform brilliant comedy (Pillow Talk), heart - aching drama (Love Me or Leave Me). She was ranked #1 box office star in the world from 1960-1964.
The Golden Age of Entertainment. When Hollywood had both talent and class. - Doris Day (Aged 97) April 3, 1922 - May 13, 2019 - Gene Nelson (Aged 76) March 24, 1920 - September 16, 1996 - Gordon MacRae (Aged 64) March 12, 1921 - January 24, 1986 Thanks for the memories. May you all rest in peace.
Doris Day was known for her mellifluous voice and has a legion of fans to prove it. But, little or nothing is known about her dancing talent. Believe you me, this is no ordinary dancing. Both Doris and twinkle-toes Gene Nelson in this sequence from Tea for Two could have competed with the best of Hollywood's dancers and still ranked very high. This is all about synchronized neat footwork and, boy, how they deliver! Songs and dances from this film, including the Charleston number, should be used to teach dance novices the intricacies of perfect footwork. Gene Nelson, an established dancer, appeared in quite a few Warner Bros. musicals including: She's working her way through college and the not-to-be-missed "Painting the clouds with sunshine:, both starring the very gorgeous Virginia Mayo. Incidentally, Gene Nelson was Lisa Gaye's co-star in the stage play "Darling I'm yours' in 1957.
How delightful to hear and see DorisDay!! I was just a girl when I started collecting her records and singing her songs. After so many years I still adore her voice. She was unique, so talented. I am one of her most devoted fans. Pauline Cosmelli Tampa Fl
Only a positive, optimistic and respectful society could produce such uplifting art. This, sadly, was the epitome of America. We didn't know it at the time, but never again would this type of spiritually uplifting art be mass produced.
I found this clip in Instagram and I loved this, In that moment my grandmother was in the hospital before of the cuarentena un Bolivia and I show It to she, at a month she died and It was ultimate video that I showed she...
Bring this stage set back with this performance again and put it in the middle of the inside of the staples center on south figeroa in down town la it would go with look of the architecture of that building elegant
Who remembers that one episode of full house when Stephanie and Michelle danced to this. Also I’m 13 but for some reason I watched full house. *no regrets*
@@tamolyn5141 Well, I have seen Gene Kelly's dancing skills, and, at least to me, Singin' in the rain and I like myself are masterpieces that cannot be duplicated or imitated by anyone. That's not putting into question Gene Nelson's talent. But, better than Gene Kelly? Well, that's just a matter of opinion.
But she started out as a dancer and trained to be a dancer in her younger years. Her budding dancing career came to an end when a train hit a car that she was travelling in and she was injured to the point where she could not continue on with professional dancing. She then redirected her energy to singing and the rest is history.
Fortunately, this is only one moment from te film. McRae was actually the co-star and Gene Nelson (the dancer you see) was a featured player. McRae was playing a composer and Doris Day's love interest in the film and Nelson was their friend. But, I admit, it nevertheless seems strange to have THE Gordon McRae just sitting there.
@@TricksterDa I'll have to disagree with you. I just saw this film the other night, and for me it was Gene Nelson who had all the talent and personality. MacRae came across with the personality of a floor mop. Nelson's charm and sex appeal and stole the film from Gordon MacRae. And OMG he could dance!
No charisma and creativity? Really? I'm sorry you don't see it. To me, Gene Nelson was an even better dancer than either Astaire or Kelly, and he had loads of charisma and creativity. Watch "So This is Paris" sometime, and pay particular attention to the dance routine Nelson does on a Paris street. It's a marvel of creative choreography and timing. In "She's Working Her Way Through College", Nelson does a routine in a gym that truly blurs the lines between dance and gymnastics.
@@aneamarlivana172 I think some people sell Gene Nelson short because he was tall, blonde, and handsome. Him also being a charismatic dancer would just be unfair to them, so they have to take him down a peg or two.
@@Chapin-pc2kz THANK YOU! I think his looks were why some people sell Nelson short too. They'd say, "Nobody could be tall, blond, and handsome...AND a superb and charismatic dancer, so we refuse to accept that he is." In reality, he had it all. He was a brilliant and versatile dancer who was elegant, athletic, had excellent footwork, style, ballet training, and it all looked so effortless. Other dancers were firmly tethered to the ground and you could see the effort they put into their dancing, but Nelson seemed to float through his dance routines. You'd almost want to look for the wires that were holding him up, but of course there were none. I've always thought that he was the best of them all. It's either "That person is too unattractive to be an actor/singer/dancer." or it's "He can't possibly be any good because he's too good looking." Both points of view are ridiculous. I definitely think Gene Nelson's looks often lead people to underestimate him as a dancer. Interestingly, Nelson has an analog in the world of opera where it's supposed to be all about the voice. 20th Century bass, Samuel Ramey, was often dismissed because he happened to be tall and handsome. In reality, he had one of the most spectacular voices ever to grace an opera stage.

RIGHT!?!?!???
Her voice is ever so beautiful, isn’t it. There’s a simplicity to it that makes it even more glamorous.
R.I.P all you Doris Day (1922 - 2019), Gordon MacRae (1921 - 1986) and Gene Nelson (1920 - 1996).

Love the step at 1:17. Not that difficult just super cool.
ドリス・デイの明るい美しさ。歌声は耳に馴染み、大変魅力的。ダンスも上手で、こういうタイプの女優さんはもう出て来ないよね。

I had never known that Doris Day was a dancer. She attended dancing school with Vera Ellen.
Robert Francis that’s so cool!
She was dancer first then a car accident left her unable to walk so she took up singing hiring her recovery. And the rest is history
Awesome!
“No No Nanette.” 😆
Not many people remember Doris Day as a dancer. Gene Nelson was as good as Fred Astaire maybe better.
Gene Nelson WAS better than Astaire or Gene Kelly.

Doris was a great talent.I just remember someone saying "I knew her before she became a virgin".I don't know who said it, but it' s cute.
Doris Day has always looked middle aged when she was 20 through to 80 now that is a skill

Doris Day was NOT a dancer. It was HELL for her to learn routines and to be GOOD at it was a miracle of her determination and work ethic.

@@jackanthony976 good facts !
She was in a serious car accident which put paid to her dancing. Concentrated on singing instead in 30s

Awwwww 🤗
How. HOW did they have Gordon MacFreakingRae stuck on a fake piano bit. He is SO much better than that.

In real live she was a dancer, after an accident she became a singer.
Her Shows are Funny to watch ... but she was a Legend!
“No” lol...refer to description...
Amazing, considering they had no taps on their shoes!
The actual taps were usually dubbed in afterward.

Was there a really good male dancer in hollywood with Kelly and Astaire, who had all they had except charisma and creativity?
Yes.
