Gojo's like the rare case of a Mary Sue done right. Think that's the case because he isn't the MC. If he was the MC, I get the feeling a lot of people would have problems with that. But because he was introduced via other characters, he doesn't come across as cringe. Instead, since his kind is so rarely tackled because their authors fear writing a Mary Sue, that makes him intriguing. Like a rare species.

I wouldn’t call Gojo a Mary sue even though he’s powerful, he faces narrative and emotional challenges. His strength isolates him, making it difficult for him to connect with others on a personal level. He also has to navigate complex political and moral dilemmas within the jujutsu society.

    • @CandyThePuppy
      @CandyThePuppy 5 месяцев назад +84

@@imraystation from my understanding of what a Mary Sue is boiled down to its most basic components,
A "Mary Sue" is a character who for whatever reason bends the laws of the world around them by simply existing. These can be either negative or positive changes, as long as those changes are only happening because the Mary Sue exists. The Mary Sue can be as self aware of this as they want to be, they can be morally conflicted about it even, but that won't change that they are taking the narrative position of a Mary Sue. Other symptoms may include: everyone is obsessed with the Mary Sue for whatever reason, conversation between other characters always circles back to the Mary Sue in some way, those they side against are without question the antagonists (except in cases of redemption) and those they side with are without question the protagonists (except in cases of betrayal). The Mary Sue is also often very emotionally driven and self confident, rarely to the detriment of themself.
Yes, he has political, moral, and emotional issues. I would even say that is _because_ he is a Mary Sue, narratively speaking.
In no way am I saying this type of Mary Sue, one which takes all the tropes but excludes the vibes, is a bad one. I myself absolutely _love_ writing characters like this, after all: trying to get as close to a true Mary Sue without making it feel like one. So I am not actually insulting Gojo here by calling him one. Just pointing out an interesting pattern.

Gojo Satoru is a walking cheat code, a glitch in the system that broke the ‘meta’ of the jujutsu world, and he has grown up with full knowledge of this reality.
He is him. There was no one else. And he can do what he wants.

The reason that Gojo appeals to me, especially as a queer person, is that he is DEEPLY relateable, despite being the most unrelatable character in anime ever considering his power.
If you think about it, almost everything that has gone wrong in the canon era has been Gojo's fault. Because of his sentimentality. He couldnt let Suguru get cremated, he needed to bury him properly. He couldnt let Yuta or Yuuji be executed.
He wanted Rika to have one last good day, tiring himself to the point that Toji would be able to kill him with the ease he did.
Sukuna could have continued to be restrained if his vessal had just been executed. Maybe Nanako and Mimiko would have had the opportunity to see their father figure properly resting.
Most of all, though, he lost someone he loves to radicalization. His best friend was isolated and radicalized and depressed and Gojo didn't notice until it was too late. Far, far too late.

We can’t blame everything on Gojo. Gojo didn’t turn Geto into a villain before his death. He was already slipping down that path.
Gojo wasn’t the reason Riko died and Tengen didn’t get a new body. He pushed himself to the limit trying to make sure she was safe till the end. Toji just outplayed him and did what he does best.
Gojo wasn’t the catalyst for Yuta creating Rika. If anything, him stopping Yuta’s execution was a net positive in gaining another special grade sorcerer ally.
Gojo wasn’t the catalyst for Yuji becoming Sukuna’s vessel. It’s not even his fault Yuji died. He was sent away on a mission and the higher ups sent Yuji to that mission with the sole purpose of getting him killed.
The only thing we could really blame him for is Kenjaku getting a hold of Geto’s body.
Gojo’s whole existence was taken into account by Kenjaku since he’s already been stopped twice by 2 other six eyes users. I think most people would fail when they’ve been plotted against for over 1000 years before they were even born.

Just commenting before finishing the video here. Gojo is so beloved because he's just well written. It's quite simple. He isn't lacking in any categories. He's appealing to both the male and female demographic.
Other popular characters usually have at least one or two major things missing from their character writing. If one character is attractive, they might have a boring personality. If one character is super powerful they might not be as conventionally attractive. You can switch all these traits around constantly but the point is that most characters lack at least one aspect in their writing. Gege did an insanely good job writing Gojo.
Not only is he so outrageously attractive that even straight men begin to swerve, he's objectively pretty. Like he has feminine traits while not lacking in masculinity. His eyes are also a huge part as well. Eyes are extremely important in character design. It's where you look when you have a conversation with someone. It's quite small, but it's the most prominent part of everybody's body. Gojo has those shining pretty boy eyes. He has a toned body while not being too beefy, but his muscles can shine through with the right clothing.
He has a good backstory. His tragic tale with Geto is incredible. I see an insane amount of shipping in the JJK community mostly around Gojo and Geto.
Next we have his personality. He's carefree and kind of a dick. This makes him flawed, but it's not a flaw that drives people away. Instead, this part of his character might actually be one of the most loved parts of his character. He's not a complete asshole either and loves his students dearly. He stands up to social norms and doesn't care about the social hierarchy. He lets his students talk to him casually and he talks casually to his superiors. He simply doesn't care for formalities much either.
He has character development as well. In his highschool days, he was shown to not care for the weak and had no sense of responsibility. When Geto left, he grew the desire to nurture the next generation as a teacher. He is still sometimes irresponsible, but that shows that his character wasn't outright completely revamped. He simply matured.
He also has the insane character introduction as well. Bro came in and beat the shit out of Sukuna during his first appearance. Then he had such an playful student-teacher dynamic with Yuji. It's hard not to love him.
Simply put, the reason people love him is because he's just really well written and really well drawn. It's not actually that hard to understand. You write good characters and people will like them.

So you don't have to be a Gojo fan to know that fight was odd. To even suggest Sakuna held back makes no sense as Gojo damaged him enough that he could not use his domain expansion. @@protoprime4213your statement is contradictory. ‘He knew that if he gave his whole’… since when do you choose to give your whole or not against someone who’s close to your own potential? The thing is that there is no world in which sukuna can beat gojo and be barely alive. Either he wins rather easily with little damage, takes some heavy damage but is still at 40% alright or just loses. Since gojo can virtually not get tired since he starts hitting black flash left and right as soon we he shows any sign of danger, there is only so much damage sukuna can take before he is in a state in which no matter what he does, gojo will win. Because sukuna’s cursed energy will only keep dropping while gojo’s doesn’t. The only way he could have killed gojo is through domain clash, or bypass infinity AND catching gojo off guard somehow. Besides i doubt sukuna was ever worried about the small fish since compared to gojo, they’re really weak.

@@DKing-du6xr What kind of comment is this? Sukuna won for many reasons and gojo lost . deal with it.
It's not contradictory. You can take your opponent seriously whilst not showing your whole arsenal, especially when 90 percent of said arsenal is useless against the limitless

    • @shaquille_oatmeal207
      @shaquille_oatmeal207 4 месяца назад +23

Sukuna was not using all his cursed techniques, so he was "holding back", but not in the sense that he was purposefully being weaker. The Heian Form and other techniques couldn't breach infinity, so there was no use for them, and his plan just needed Mahoraga and his cleave.
Would it make sense to use everything in your arsenal, even if it didn't work against the opponent you're fighting, and allow the sorcerers (who were going to jump him in waves right after Sukuna finished his battle) on the sidelines to simultaneously learn all your techniques and take advantage of them? Obviously not. This is why Sukuna was "holding back." It was only logical.
Sukuna was also testing ways he could bypass infinity with his own knowledge, while also testing Gojo. He already had the plan of using Mahoroga just in case if Gojo proved to be strong, which he did. Sukuna used DA and DE on gojo to see if he would die from those, and because he didn't, he'd then go back to using the plan he had already made, which was using Mahoraga to create a Cleave specifically made to ignore infinity. So sukuna protects mahoraga, hides in the shadows, lets the shikigamis fight for him as he charges up, and analyzes the information Mahoraga brings to him. After Gojo basically blows everyone up, Sukuna gets desperate since he thinks he will die before figuring out how to bypass infinity, but fortunately he gets it right on time, because Mahoraga had already figured out infinity by then, so his desperation was pretty short and went away after he kills gojo using Cleave, the information on how to bypass Infinity brought by Mahoraga, and the energy he had saved by hiding the whole second round of the fight and avoiding Gojo's attacks.
Sukuna is centuries old (~1000 yrs old) and his mastery, understanding, and knowledge of numerous techniques is better than anyone else that it genuinely does play a huge role in his fights. Besides, Gojo is in his 20s, and I can't imagine he has anywhere near the amount of knowledge on jujutsu sorcery than Sukuna with his centuries of experience.
Gojo definitely has better battle iq with how much he improvised during the fight, but Sukuna's experience, mastery of his arsenal's technique, and usage of both shikigamis and mahoroga gave him the upper hand.

Gpjo works because hes a mary sue that doesnt win. He has it all, and yet he STILL loses at every turn.
    He failed to stop toji
    He failed to save riko
He failed to stop geto from turning evil
He failed to prevent jogo from escaping
He failed to stop hanami from escaping
He failed to protext his students. If sukuna hadnt made a deal, yuji wouldve died.
He failed to avoid the prison realm.
Then when he got put, he failed to defeat sukuna.
Nearly every problem that exists in the story is a direct result of his failing to do what he wants to do. His domain even reflects this, being a void that gives you everything yet leaves you unable to do anything with what you're given.

finally someone gets it. Gojo's victory against sukuna isnt from his inherited power, its from his ONLY successful idea- raising strong students. if Gojo wins, the students were useless all along, and his FINAL GOAL would have been a failure. him dying was his only actual accomplishment because its the only time his goals can come to fruition

Idk how but someone a fictional character helped me be able to understand that. And not just one, it was multiple. Megumi, Nobara, choso, and gojo. It makes me realize there’s so much time I wish they had living so that I could see them shine more. It kinda goes for the same with my ex best friend. I still miss them so much.(they ain’t dead tho dw)

What I love about his character is despite being raised and treated like a weapon his whole life, when it came to his students and his friends he never saw them like that, riko was the star plasma vessel and seen as just something for Tengen to merge with, gojo was adamant that she gets to have a choice on what she does with her own life, when she got killed he was determined that no other kid was ever put through that because of the Jujutsu world, that’s why he stopped Yuji and yuta from being executed because he believes that no kids should have their youth taken away from them like he was and what happened to his friend riko. He also genuinely believes in his students being able to surpass him one day, and genuinely cares for them. It’s a shame the world saw him as just a weapon and not a person. Despite being the strongest he still couldn’t save the people most important to him, riko, geto, nanami, yaga-sensei. Just goes to show that being the strongest takes a toll on you

Gojo is the best character in the entire jjk series (he’s my princess) (my husband) (help me) Gojo is arguably one of the best written characters, though. Killing him off was unnecessary. :(

    • @quo9138
      @quo9138 4 месяца назад +2

killing him off was absolutely necessary, it was the whole point of his character. his arc relies on the fact that he is NEVER successful at reaching his goals, despite being the strongest. In the story he:
fails to save the star plasma vessel
      fails to save Geto
fails to stop Geto from getting Yuta
fails at goodwill, because Mahito gets sukuna fingers and cursed objects from JJT
fails in Shibuya by getting sealed
fails in his fight against Sukuna
The ONLY thing he's ever sucessful at is his ONLY real goal: raising a generation of sorcerers that DONT rely on him. For this, it has to be the sorcerers killing sukuna, and gojo has to DIE to prove his ONLY REAL GOAL was successful. If gojo comes back/if he won against sukuna, this would diminish his arc heavily. from the first chapter, he HAD to die

    • @solarssolstice
      @solarssolstice 4 месяца назад +3

@@quo9138 Yeah I get that he basically failed throughout his life, and that his goal was raising another generation of sorcerers, but the main thing I don’t like about his death is HOW it happened.
      -Off-screen
-Out-of-character thoughts in the airport scene. Seriously? All he cared about was his and Fraudkuna’s strength and power? Not his students? Idk I might have felt at least a little better if he got a proper send off… you made a lot of good points, but I also worry about Megumi when they inevitably beat Sukuna and Megumi either dies that way or, if Gojo stays dead, how disgusted and horrified he’d be with himself after watching Sukuna kill Gojo with his body. I don’t think Gojo’s purpose as a character was to just die, though.

    • @quo9138
      @quo9138 4 месяца назад

@@solarssolstice no his purpose wasn't to die, but the only way to end his character was for him to die/lose. if he stayed alive or came back, everyone who died after him would have died in vain since gojo would've come back and beaten a much weaker sukuna. also, the airport scene makes sense because its the only time Gojo got to fight all out, as Sukuna cured his loneliness and released him of his 'curse' (the responsibility of being a monolith of humanity). gojo and sukuna both couldn't have killed each other without the assistance of others (megumi for sukuna, and the students for gojo), but the way they went about gathering other people's strengths is whats different and ultimately why gojo will die a winner whereas sukuna will die losing, because Gojo both got cured of his curse and also got sukuna killed, whereas sukuna's downfall will be his selfish attitude and the most meaningful thing in his life will have been the fight with Gojo, as he says he'll "never forget him"

And often they can become a safer place for people who are discovering themselves. I grew up in a deeply religious household and it was through fandom and m/m relationships in those fandoms that I discovered it was ok to like the same gender and that I didn’t need to suppress myself.

And then well activated berserker armor which is..yeah. And then the change in his face and body, his resting somber look now compared to his angry and even sinister looks from earlier chapters etc

i'm blatantly stealing this from another video essay i watched the other day, but one thing some people don't seem to realize about gojo's death is that he had to die- or otherwise no longer be present in jujutsu society in the way he is throughout jjk- to achieve his goals and be freed from the shackles of being "the strongest." the reason he became a teacher was to create a new generation of sorcerers who could become his equals and stand with him, not below him like everyone else. all in the hope that someday he wouldn't have to shoulder the burden of basically holding jujutsu society in stability alone. at his core, gojo is a sad lonely twink who lost the only person that ever really came close to matching or understanding him, with whom he use to share the title of "the strongest." hell, he had to kill that person himself, that of course being geto. and even then, after riko was killed and gojo got even stronger while geto fell into depression, the gap between them grew even further and then geto abandoned him to become a mass murderer, leaving gojo all alone at the top as a bottom (we all know it's true don't argue with me).
anyway i got very off topic talking about my favorite homosexuals but the point is that Gojo had to lose to Sukuna to build his ideal world, because if he had won, it would only reinforce jujutsu society's reliance on him as "the strongest," which is the exact opposite of what Gojo wanted. and now that Gojo is dead and has happily reunited with Geto in the afterlife, it's up to the next generation of sorcerers to not make the same mistakes as their predecessors

Nope. This is a edgy and doomer mentality.
Gojo deserved to live, he was a Young and healthy 29 years old with his entire life ahead of him
Many people feel loneliess nowdays and saying that death is the only cure for it is Very imature
Gege just killed Gojo for shocking value.
He died for nothing and his death have no meaning.
Since jujutsu Society is still the same with teenagers being slaves to the system.
If gege was not a childshy author he would develop Gojo to work through his loneliness and identity crisis
Hell he could even Lost his Powers.
But diying and regreding to your teenager self is not a good advice for loneliness.
And This idea that adults had to die and left the problems to teenagers to fix it is extremely stupid
Anyway look at chapter 235 and see how happy Gojo was when he though he WON and would LIVE
Also he said too: "i have love and dreams too"

The only thing that I feel was a MAJOR detail that was missed is the execution of the [SPOILER THING] you talked about later in the video....
    ...
    ...
    ...
    ...
    ...It happened OFF. FUCKING. SCREEN.
People weren't just delusional or grief-stricken, they were PISSED. I dropped all semblance of care I had for the series right then and there, thankfully so in retrospect.
The last few chapters have been incessantly boring (shoutout to Takeba having the only positive presence since then) because it's all building up the series' other Mary Sue who.... has zero personality.
It wouldn't matter if Mary Suekuna constantly had asspulls if he was entertaining as a personality, well written, charismatic, or any combination of the bunch but the major problem is... Suekuna has zero of these traits. The asspull wins he constantly throws out are just the icing on the shit cake, and being the reason why one of the BEST written characters is now gone is flat out unforgivable.

Gege should've kept kenjaku alive. Although I know sukuna in and out I still find him boring. He is like an animal or should I say natural disaster. I hate how gege made kenjaku give the keys for merger to Sukuna and killed him to make Sukuna more relevant. Sukuna is like a raid boss from a game which is not really a bad thing but this fight has been stretched out for far too long than required and too many unnecessary characters have made an appearance. The focus on yuji constantly being shifted annoys the fuck out of me. I understand the need for gojo to be eliminated from the story because y'know he was too strong. I also understand how you guys feel as well wanting gojo to be still alive but lackluster ness of the story cannot be simply fixed by just bringing gojo back to life.

ngl i think a lot of sukuna's characterization is lost in the translation bc most of it is in his dialogues and form(?) of speech 😭

Agreed. Don't get me wrong, when jjk is over I'll go back and read it,(it's far from the only story I have a love hate relationship, I am a Naruto fan after all.) but as it stands, I really couldn't get myself excited to read a new chapter every week even if I wanted to. It doesn't help that I was spolied on his death within a couple chapters of it happening and had to go back and read it for myself. I would've preferred he just didn't get unsealed or if the unsealing backfired somehow and that killed him. Either of those could've also served a great plot device and demoralization of the cast. I fully believe that it's not his death that's the problem, it was just handled poorly. The biggest reason the author felt the need to kill off gojo in the first place was because he was too hard to write around. That's also why he was sealed. Because with him in the picture, it felt like the story couldn't move forward.

@@kyradreamer4769gege didnt have to "write around" Gojo, Gojo was OBVIOUSLY gonna lose to sukuna later on. this is made obvious by the fact that gojo NEVER succeeds at his goals thru the story (loses to Toji, Rika dies, Geto turns evil, Geto gets to Yuta, Geto's body is left for Kenjaku to take, Jogo escapes, Mahito gets 6 sukuna fingers and 3 cursed wombs during Goodwill arc, Gojo gets sealed, Sukuna's vessel causes innocent deaths), so after all of that, the ONLY thing Gojo has is his ACTUAL GOAL-raising a generation that DOESNT rely on Gojo. If Gojo wins against Sukuna, then his actual goal DOESNT WORK, making his character pointless. Gojo dying was the ONLY way to conclude his arc, and it works perfectly with Sukuna as a character because Sukuna was always antagonised which caused him to grow evil and arrogant. Yuji is the only person who can defeat Sukuna because he faced what Sukuna faced, being shunned both by curses and JJK higherups, but he accepted his role instead of egotistically killing everything in his way- something only possible due to Gojo's influence. Gojo fans understand the series challenge: 99% fail 🫢😱😱

I loved this video. And there's a little something i would like to add, most straight men might not be into shipping 2 male characters, but the sheer manpower behind satosugu is incredible, as a matter of fact the ships and comics and *********** and ****** just for satosugu might be more than every other gojo ship, not just straight ones, ALL of the others.
Shit is a MONOPOLY, depending on where you're looking you could be looking at a 20:1 ratio of satosugu vs everything else.

19:52 I just remember a conversation I had about that moment of Gojo in Shibuya. I was saying to a moot "This villains are stupid, they really think Gojo wouldn't be totally okay doing this? He's a psycho even if he's with the good guys, duh!" and they started to tell me "no way, he's a hero, he wouldn't!" 😂
Obviously I was write and they were surprised for some reason, asking me how I knew it. Hello? He has white hair and he's too damn pretty to not be insane, c'mon! Not a complain, I love him for who he is 💜
