    Another thing that sets Texas apart from the other states: The Texas flag is the only flag that can fly at the same height as the American flag. This was one of the conditions Texas had before joining the states. All other states must fly their state flag below the U.S. flag.

    Texas actually had a Legation (similar to an Embassy) in London during its time as an independent country and there’s a plaque there even today memorializing that history. It’s at No. 4 St James Street in Westminster.

    Texas is about 2.85 times larger than the UK. When i visited the UK for the first time I was blown away by how small it is. There's is reason we do not have a very good train or bus system here.
    Area of the UK 94,354 square miles (244,376 km2)
    Area of Texas 268,820 square miles (696,241 km²)

    Let's not Stereotype Texas: I'm a native 4th-generation Texan, & the only time I've ever fired a gun was at summer camp at age 12. Texas doesn't have a state income tax, but it has fairly high property taxes, & income isn't as high as it is in California & New York.

    I have lived in Texas for 50 years, and you don't see people walking around with guns in the cities, despite open carry laws. Much of the state is not desert, and doesn't look like a movie Western. The only time you see a lot of people walking around in cowboy clothing is during rodeo weeks, or at Country-Western bars.
    Texas would have severe economic trouble if it ever seceded (which it legally can't), and would have military expenses, trade problems, and much higher taxes if it did. It would be like Brexit on massive steroids.

    All states have Federal Income Tax. Texas is one of the states that has no state income tax and no state inheritance tax. Same with Florida, which is why so many seniors flocked there to avoid paying more in taxes upon their deaths. However, Texas has a very high annual property tax. Our sales tax is 8.75%, which is in the middle of what other states charge.

  • @mrgclough
    @mrgclough 5 месяцев назад +5

    Texas has some cost advantages. One is no income tax. It's because we have too many trees from which to hang legislators who would vote for a state income tax. We do have substantial taxes on gasoline and other fees, One things that gives people confidence is that by its state constitution, the state government must balance its budget, essentially cannot incur debt as the federal government does. It means that if you are a retired state employee, you need have little fear that the state will become insolvent and lose your pension. Texans pay property taxes to cities, counties, school districts and some special entities like emergency service districts. But not to the state. The state gets most of its tax money from sales tax, tax on oil and gas production, vehicle taxes, etc. The oil and gar tax is often a double whammy. When Texas was founded, all land not then deeded to individuals was deemed property of the state. They didn't know that the vast areas of West Texas that were worth little would turn out to half a lot of the world's oil and gas under them. The state leases that land to oil and gas producers for huge amounts. A lot of that goes to fund the state universities, which relieves other revenue streams of that burden.
    Texas is so big that the cost of something like buying a house varies widely in different regions. But costs are rising as more and more people move from other states, like California. Still, a "middle class" home in any part of Texas is less than the same house in California. Gasoline is cheap in Texas, because transportation costs figure in, and Texas has both the oil production and the massive refining capacity along the Texas coast. We're simply closer to the source.
    Before the Civil War, referring to the "United States" was actually taken to point up that the states were independent. After the War, the meaning changed to imply a single nation. However, the states remain largely autonomous nation states. Any powers not explicitly assigned to the federation in the Constitution automatically are reserved to the individual states. In a young nation eager to attract immigrants to populate the West, no one thought about the power to police borders against anything but an enemy government. So, the issue of who can enforce immigration on the Mexican border was not settled. In one legal view, since it's not specifically granted to the federation, the states automatically have that power and may enforce their own borders. It is today an open question.

  • @pumaspaw
    @pumaspaw 4 месяца назад +2

    Texas does not tax income. But it does have a 6.25% sales tax, with an allowed 2% more for local uses, capping it at 8.25%
    The offset is that a lot of services that the government might do, are privatized, which means there are individual purchase costs. But having lived 7 other states, I'd say that the fees are comparable and the efficiency, on average, is higher in the private sector.
    The overall cost of living in Texas tends to be cheaper.
    The down side is that wages tend not to be very competitive, which is kind of ok, because the cost of living is less. And with the growth, there seems to be a good job market.

    3:29 taxes is a part of it but in general while wages may be slightly higher on average in some other states like New York or California. The cost of living is significantly lower compared to most others. So that ratio of how much you can make compared to how much it cost to live is the best in the country. Combine that with the fact that Yexas is so big we have every habitat found anywhere else in the country in this one state. The legal reason Texas can leave the United States.
    Article 1 - BILL OF RIGHTS
    Section 2 - INHERENT POLITICAL POWER; REPUBLICAN FORM OF GOVERNMENT
    All political power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are founded on their authority, and instituted for their benefit. The faith of the people of Texas stands pledged to the preservation of a republican form of government, and, subject to this limitation only, they have at all times the inalienable right to alter, reform or abolish their government in such manner as they may think expedient.

  • @K162KingPin
    @K162KingPin 4 месяца назад

    Can Texas legally leave? Yes and no. The difference between a civil war and a war of independence it completely contingent on who wins. For example. If the colonies had lost the war against the British it would have gone down in history as a Civil War. On the other hand if the South had won what is know as the American Civil War then it would have gone down in history as a war of independence.
    So while virtually no nation existing today split off from whoever ruled them before their nation was formed "legally". The legality was justified by the newly formed government. Not the one it broke away from. I doubt that the British had any laws in place legalizing the independence of the United States.
    The real question of legality then is irrelevant. What matters is "could it be done" and "will it be done".
    So could it? Ukraine would not be in a war with Russia right now if they had not given up their nuclear weapons. Russia would know that if invaded they would use them and the war would never have begun.
    Texas if an independent nation would be ranked 4th in global nuclear power. With dozens of launch sites. Thousands of tanks, war planes, war ships, spread across dozens of military installations, forts, and ports. It would be impossible for even the united states to gain a decisive victory over Texas in open warfare. Simply put. If both the north and south had dozens of nuclear missiles during the Civil War, well there wouldn't have been a civil war as both sides would have been completely devastated.
    Likewise today the United States would be effectively obliterated if it went to war with Texas. Don't get me wrong. Texas would be just as gutted after such a conflict which is why it will never happen.
    The fact is that if Texas, and by that I mean the vast majority of its citizens wanted to leave the United States. Ther would be nothing militarily or legally that the United States could do about it.
    Which brings us to the next question. Would we ever leave? A couple years ago there was a convention held for the purpose of promoting that very idea. While a body count was not done, from the photos of the crowd there were easily less than 2,000 people in attendance. Even if only 1 percent of those who might be in favor were in attendance that would still represent less than 1 percent of the total population of Texas. I think it is fair to say that the vast majority of Texans have no interest in leaving the United States. I know I don't. That doesn't mean we are captives. We can leave any time we want and pretending otherwise is at the very least foolishness. We remain the the Union by choice which hopefully is true of all the states and all the citizens within them.
    This freedom is the fundamental principle of our society.
