- On 1 August 1976 during the second lap at the very fast left kink before Bergwerk, Lauda was involved in an accident where his Ferrari swerved off the track, hit an embankment, burst into flames, and made contact with Brett Lunger's Surtees-Ford car. Unlike Lunger, Lauda was trapped in the wreckage. Drivers Arturo Merzario, Lunger, Guy Edwards, and Harald Ertl arrived at the scene a few moments later, but before Merzario was able to pull Lauda from his car, he suffered severe burns to his head and inhaled hot toxic gases that damaged his lungs and blood.
Rush is a 2013 biographical sports film centred on the Hunt-Lauda rivalry between two Formula One drivers, the British James Hunt and the Austrian Niki Lauda during the 1976 Formula 1 motor-racing season.

The greatest part of this scene is the fact that Jochen Mass is played by... the actual Jochen Mass.
Wow! Mass still got that skill!
@@richieosborn2639 You don't forget that skill..... and it's certainly not hard against drivers who are just mere actors.
Lauda said it's like riding a bike. That's why his comeback was a succes.
Didn't know that. Not bad for Jochen Mass even though he's an old man today. But did you know they also used the actual Nurburgring Nordscheleife to create this scene for the German Grand Prix as well as for Niki's crash?
@@kevingarcia6368they even used the actual footage of Lauda's crash
@@mrtiesthatbind That was actually a great job from them making it as accurate as possible. That's such laser eye dedication they did there.
how was this film at least not nominated for best picture?!??!
Baffles me, this was the last time I ever cared about high budget shitty award shows
It's not about diversity and gay rights. That's why.
@@cryptidian3530 xD
The story is quite unrealistic but when compared to the other racing movies this is honestly more realistic
@@cryptidian3530 lmao XDDD
2:34 I love how in the race Jochen Mass passes Hunt and Lauda and dont even turn his head lol
tyrrell p34 is a nice sight to see
I always find it weird at how movie makers make it easy for drivers to pass each other. Niki passed Andretti, Lafitte, Peterson, Watson, Depailler, Lunger, Edwards and Ertl in just 30 seconds
It would have taken at least 5 minutes to pass all of them
It seems like seconds because it’s all condensed. When a film can only be 2hrs you have to make decisions, can’t spend 5-10 mins just passing people, so you gotta make it more like 20 seconds.
Because its a 2 hour film lmao
Time skip
Please....this is Formula One, crazy shit like that happens all the time.
6:02 Noo
5:40 pista
It is mostly factually accurate, except nothing broke on Laudas car. He was off line in the corner before which put him up on the wet kerb and into the barrier.
and the fact that Niki's car has a spring casing that's made of magnesium which is extremely flammable and insanely difficult to put out.
I have a conclusion. Maybe the reason lauda crashed was because of the jump in the "flugplatz" section. One of the parts had stressed out. Slowly deteriorating before it came off. force steering the car to the opposite side
I find it very strange that Hunt still receives blame for this...... he didn't crash. He was faster, he won. Lauda either made an error but most likely it was Ferrari who made their car (at least that is what the movie shows) too fragile and something broke too or Lauda was too wild or rode a kerb too hard (which isn't in his character).
Hunt wasn't the one that held up Niki which lead to him having to push so hard. Don't know if that pit incident with the Lotus really happened or not. (Some mistake in this movie is that he passed that Lotus later on track whilst he actually left him behind in pit. It's Andretti after all.
Secondly the track dried up, Jochen took lead with his slicks. Home hero at the front. Started 8th. Finished nonetheless in third whilst teammate won.
So the 'over 10%' risk wasn't there. The track was drying.
Everyone wants their racing fee. Yes. It's their job. Their chocie. Yes. It's dangerous. And Hunt? Did he really sway the room? Or did everyone get a fair democratic vote and he couldn't take it? How much influence did James have? Not a world champion, whilst their were other fast drivers as well?
Lastly, Lauda could have just stick to his own words and not race, like he did in Japan later on.
Apparently his tyres were dead by the time he got to the corner (where he crashed) and lost control of the car
Lauda didn't blame Hunt for his crash at the Nurburgring Nordscheleife. He only admitted that he mistimed his recovery between a fast right curve and the Bergwerk curve. And clipped the curbing, losing control of the car and sending him into a slide at a speed of over 170 miles an hour. And don't know either if that pit incident with a Lotus f1 driver happened. However I do know there were 3 drivers running for Lotus, not just Mario Andretti. But there was Gunner Nilsen and Ronnie Peterson driving for Lotus as well.
Ik I’m late but I have one question how did Lauda’s helmet come off after the crash- was it like a small detail I missed or something or was it explained cuz I haven’t watched the movie.
Niki Lauda wore a modified helmet that didn't really fit him properly. The foam compressed and slid off after the accident, so that's why this is in the film. Quite impressive attention to detail, if you ask me.
Did th3ythey run full length nurburgring back then?
yea they did
Right up until Niki's crash. That was the last time Formula One would ever use the Nordscheleife. While his rival James Hunt took the checkered flag. The fiery crash that nearly killed Niki Lauda proved to be the final nail in the coffin and would even convince Chris Amon to retire the sport outright. The track proved to be too dangerous for any motorsports.
The motorcycle GP continued there for a few more years, and world endurance cars raced it into the mid 1980s at higher speeds than the 70s F1 cars. Today it is still used for the 24hr sportscar races@kevingarcia6368
