Cher's ancestry is complicated! She is half Armenian on her father's side, and a multitude of European backgrounds on her mom's side!
This song reminds me of Paul Revere and The Raiders song Cherokee Nation! This is a very powerful song that talks about racism and bullying!
We are all brothers and sisters people! Don't take it for granted because it may get taken away! Take care you all!

@@rslambert1 When it comes to realizing the context of the times, you fail miserably. Back then Hollywood had caucasians playing the role of Indians in the movies, and society didn't bat an eyelash. Another example, Bing Crosby donning blackface in the movie Holiday Inn (1942).
I suggest in the future, before passing judgement, you take in account what the times were before spouting off.

This is very relevant for our times. When you think of how poorly we have treated indigenous people to this day, it is difficult not to recognize the point she is bringing up. She was from Southern California, and she certainly hasn´t suffered as the indigenous people have, but her bringing up this issue was certainly important.

Used to get teased, being called half-breed in school, when this song came out in the 70's. My mother had jet black hair, dark brown eyes, and olive complexion and looked native american indian, although she was an European mix including Greek, Italian, and Basque. I had my mothers black hair, but had greenish-grey eyes (not brown) growing up, so schoolmates whom seen me, then see my mother, and assume by looks alone I am part Native American Indian.

Cher sings a beautiful duet with Peter Cetera called "After All" from the 1989 film "Chances Are" which starred Cybil Shepherd, Ryan O'Neal and an early performance from Robert Downey Jr. It's a really cute film that is worth a watch. Cher's biggest song and my favorite from her is "Believe" from 1999 which is an awesome and really fun dance song.

As a older person 65 its important to understand the time and political need for entertainers to step out and address what was a real problem of the era. The song writer chose Cherokee but could have any mix because that point in history it was frowned on from both and truely rejected by both families. America 40-50 yrs later has evolved to the point this likely is such a non issue the song has no meaning. But at the time it did . I tell my daughter before judging the past try watching old shows to get insight as to the cultural norms . Watch andy griffin(sheriff) teach Obey a little boy how to fight a bully . Today thats not how we teach . Just a example

I on the other hand completely understand it and the message it convey.
I too have been in her place of not wanted by either side of my two races in a time when multi racial was not acceptable.
It's a song that touches on a forgotten form of racism mix races.
Unfortunately people still only see with their eyes the dominant pigment on the outside and not the two or more cultures that reside inside.
Perhaps one day we will all be judged by what's inside each one of us and not the packaging we are wrap in .

It's a song of it's time. Wait and see how uncomfortable we'll feel fifty years from now about the things that are popular now when we look back at these things we're applauding right now. BTW the lyrics got it backwards. Cherokee's are matrilineal, meaning if the mother is Cherokee, the children are considered full Cherokee. I think that's pretty much true of all the Native American tribes. (You'd think they'd have bothered to check)

While the song was originally meant to shine light on the unfair, societal derision that mixed-race people face day-to-day, Cher's rendition (not to mention the feathery getup she'd wear when she performed it) hasn't aged well. The cultural appropriation, widely accepted back in the early 70's, doesn't hold up well against today's racial awareness.
