How to Cast Off in Knitting

  • Today I shall be showing you how to cast off in knitting. Simply start with the stitch you would normally work, such as a purl or knit stitch and when you have two loops on your right needle, pull the first loop over the second and drop. Keep going until you have one loop left. Cut your yarn and pull through to finish!
I am so excited to get started in teaching you how to knit, starting at the very basics and moving on to more advanced stitches and projects as time goes on.
If you don't know me already, I am best known for my crochet tutorials and you can find my crochet channel here: / happyberrycrochet

I used to knit about 10 years ago. Well COVID-19 happened and now I'm stuck in my house. So, I grabbed a couple of yarn boxes I had stowed away in my closet and decided to take up knitting again. Thank you for all your beginner videos. They are the right speed and I like how close up the video is positioned. Well, I am up and running again with my knitting! I've only ever done simple scarves. But I have watched your hand warmer and cable stitch videos. Once I get more comfortable, I think I may try those.

Had to add a comment, this lady is superb at teaching how to knit, would recommend her any day, so clear, concise, calm and easy to follow, I absolutely adore watching, thirty years ago, could knit in a straight line, one stitch, within a week of tutorials with HappyBerry Knitting, my skills are back tenfold. Thank you so much for sharing for free, pray this catapults you into fortune, as you’ve helped others find theirs. Blessings all the way!

    I love this video.
Perfect narration, explaining along each step, and, for me, showing how to avoid dropping a stitch that is trying to slide up as you pull the other stitch over.
It's the small things like that ruin a project, so good job demonstrating!

This was SO helpful. I love the slow and steady way the technique is presented, and then repeated a bunch of times.
If you're like me, and discovered on watching this that your last row is purl stitches, don't worry! The technique is exactly the same, except you purl each stitch instead of knitting. I did that and it worked like a charm.

I haven't knitted in years and totally forgot how to cast off. So I researched here on the RUclips and found some real bad videos before finding this wonderful one!
Too many videos were showing people being too quick with the steps. It's hard to tell what exactly they were doing or they were cutting film too quickly. Thank you for taking the time for showing the steps close up and the calmness of your voice! It really helped a lot!

Thank you for having showed this slowly and in detail....some other youtube knitting sites whip through their tutorials so, so fast that in my case, I cannot follow. In January, I decided I had to stop smoking, or at least secede from smoking so much and I knew, in my case, the problem would be what to do with my hands and I decided to learn how to knit. For a few months, now, I have been buying the cheapest wool (or similar) as not to waste money until I was sure I could actually do something..which I have and now for the summer, I have a project. A throw blanket which I will do in panels and then sew them together. I also bought some much better wool and many different colors so I can, if I get tired, whip up a scarf or similar. I thank you for speaking as if you are speaking to children and I shall be returning to your site for advice. Thank you!!! - Gary, Italy

Thank you so much for this video! I began an afghan in 1971 and have knit on it in fits and starts for the last 52 years. I knit quite a bit 4 years ago when I was recovering from a knee replacement. Then a couple of weeks ago decided that was long enough! I would die first if I didn’t finish it! I simply knit until I ran out of yarn. I had to look up how in the heck to cast off, because I’m not sure if I’ve ever begun or finished another project. 😬🤦‍♀️ I finished, but then ran out of yarn before I cast completely off, so I used embroidery thread to finish it off. Colors: bright yellow, bright orange, lime green, and avocado green. Very 70s colors and I love them still! It’s going to get hot here in southern Arizona soon, and I just wanted it finished before Summer. I did it!! 😂😂😂😂
