Dude don't let the refined features and high range voice fool you. These two are decorated high ranking military officers who have seen serious military combat and are battle hardened. They are both tough, and fine examples of good masculine men who arent afraid to show love, compassion and and tenderness. Inner emotional strength is what enabled him to get through this beautiful and lyrically brutal song in one take. His father had not heard the song before this so he was probably a bit unaware of what to expect. Apparently when James finished singing the entire crew was awash with tears and James' father stood up and said why are you all crying I'm not dead yet. A light moment to what is a very heavy song.
I appreciate your vulnerability here. I'm a firefighter and can tell you there have been 100's of times we get back from a call, get off the truck, and just cry with eachother. I appreciate you for being Brave enough to be emotionally vulnerable. Subscribed!

Can you imagine being able to write these words to your parent and being able to tell them that before they left instead of saying it after. He was given a gift and then being given his gift he has given that gift to all of us.
James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away a few years ago.
This ones hurts.. in all the right places, because it is at big testament to love, honor and family.. I really have missed you and I am glad you are back
Music is one of the most powerful forces on earth, it can even save lives. Thank God for music and the people who create it for us and those who share it with us.
Can you imagine looking into your dying father's eyes and telling him that after he passes, you're going to try make him proud (while he pats your arm to try comfort you)? This is one of several very emotional songs Blunt has written based on his actual experiences that people connect with because we have/are/will experience those things ourselves. He is saying what we are feeling.
Hi, Nick😊. I have seen you cry many times, and I can tell you, there's nothing wrong with showing your vulnerable side. It shows us just how human you really are. Thank you for this beautiful reaction to such a beautifully sad song. ❤😊
So glad you are back!!! One of the most powerful songs I’ve heard in a lang time. Both heart wrenching & heart felt directly into my soul. Honest but absolutely brutal & beautiful
The story does have a happy ending. James' dad was stage 4 Kidney failure during filming, but a cousin saw the vid and he was a match. He has recovered. During the filming he said, "Why's everybody crying? I'm not dead yet!"
Beautiful dedication song. Couldn’t imagine singing with his father sitting next to you whole song just don’t see dad til ending but sitting next to him whole time. They said after finished this video everyone broke down filming crew and everyone. Great reaction live and wellness to everyone ❤❤❤🫶
I think we as people who love to watch reactors, like to connect sometimes, & showing vulnerability with us, does that......thank you for being vulnerable & raw with us ❤
Such a beautiful song. Lost my mum January 9th a year now, i was her full time carer so had to watch her wittle away. James dad survived in the end found a donor due to this song. When he sang this his dad was dying of kidney failure
Lost my Dad back in ‘95. Just graduated High School and he was sick all 4yrs, so at some point I knew it was coming. Just remember 4 days before Christmas he called me into my parents room to talk and told me “ It’s your time to be the man of the house and take care of your Mom and 2 younger sisters”. I got a call the next night at work to hurry home and held his hand while he passes in his own bed on Dec. 22nd 1995 ( RIP ). That was tough. 17yrs old and now not only having to deal with adulthood , but watch after my Mom and younger sisters. Sheesh. 30yrs later with 9yr old twins ( boy / girl ) married 12yrs and being the best Dad ever. Loved the reaction and this song gets me every time.
I rediscovered James Blunt's music last year and have been deeply moved by his music. Exceptional singer songwriter. Looking forward to seeing him in Boston this year for the Back to Bedlam 20th anniversary tour.
@susanellis1930 during one of his songs he left the stage and ran to the far end of the arena, up the stairs and randomly gave somebody a massive hug. On his way back he passed a guy coming back from the bar carrying 2 pints, he stopped did a double take, looking around. Obviously wondering why James was running past him in the audience 🤣
James dad used to be in the army, James joined the army and the line your not my father I'm not your son we just to grown man saying goodbye was how they said goodbye when James had to serve in the army.
Actually there is came from James mouth himself he dad served in the army and him they said they used to say this to each other thankyou very much@@jedislap8726
This song is breathtakingly sad and beautiful. Also, I LOVE your wall art. It's gorgeous. As for the song's circumstances, James and his father were both in the British military. When they would deploy, they would say "I'm not your son and you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye," to help them be stone-faced as military leaders. Your chat got the rest of it!
I would encourage you to give Jason Hawke Harris-Phantom Limb a listen. Great video. Acoustic version just him and a friend on fiddle. Can't emphasize enough how great of a song it is.
James is at his best when he writes about his lived experiences. James will always make you feel something, whether it's joy, sadness or anger. He wrote a song about his experiences in the Kosovo War in the 90s when he was in the British Army under NATO. It's called "No Bravery" and I think you should check it out, the music video includes James' own home video footage he shot while deployed over there.
My dad died 21 years ago and I still cry when I hear this song. I was a huge daddy's girl and he was a great dad. I still think about him and can start crying out of the blue.
His father had stage four kidney disease. This video actually saved his fathers life, because a distant cousin in Australia, seen the video, and was a match for his father and donated his kidney.! No one in the family was a match, and just by chance a distant cousin was a match and donated his kidney and saved his fathers life. I believe his father only had about three or four months to live.
This is my song I go to when I need a hug from my dad. I went back home to take care of him for his cancer treatment and dialysis treatments because my mom still had to work. And when the strongest man I ever knew looks at me and tells me “son I’m done” and I had to tell my mom this. And hospice came and set up a bed for him in their living room for him. So I slept on the floor next to him. And then I’m awoken from my mom screams he’s gone! Over and over. He made it to their anniversary though. That crazy tough fu*ker! Now with me having stage 4 colon cancer at 43 all I want and really need is my dads hug telling me it’s gonna be ok we got this. I need it so bad and I ain’t gonna get it. So this song covers it for me
At the end of this single take video, Charles Blount was the only one with dry eyes. He asked, why is everyone crying? I'm still here. A distant cousin with the same name donated the kidney. By the way, his father had donated a kidney years before.
His Dad had stage four kidney disease. No one was a match for a transplant . Because of this video a distant cousin came forward, was tested and was a match. He donated a kidney to James’s dad . Years ago James’s dad donated one of his kidneys so when he had stage 4 kidney disease he only had one kidney.
When you learn the story, the true story behind this song, and you realize his real father is sitting next to him the whole video, and you realize the tears are real emotions are real ! I’m sorry no one can match this
I'm not a son but I am a daughter and my father passed away in my arms and I thank God I was there❤ I would have never wished it any other way to see his beautiful blue eyes looking at me when he shut his eyes for the last time😢
Yea this is actually his dad in the video. His dad was dying. He was dying from kidney disease stage 4. you can live with only one kidney, but his dad had already donated one of his kidney so it was not looking good for his dad. This was literally James goodbye to his dad. A cousin of James saw this video and reached out. He tested himself to see if he was a potential donor for his dad. And it was a match! His dad is now alive and well . thankfully because of this video. Such an amazing story.... Also another good one by James is *The girl that never was* . There is something with James Blunt and how he sings these song that just hit you right in the feel like a fridge to to the face.
His name should be James "Waterworks" Blunt. So many of his songs tug at your soul. It is hard to believe the emotions he pulls out of you. No matter how many times I hear it, tears flow but more so because I lost my dad a few months ago. '
“It’s my turn to chase the monsters away” is the hardest lyrics for me. Watching both my parents decline in the years before they died, I just wanted to take it all away for them, to make it all better - just in the same way they protected me as a child.
There is a reaction video by James himself, where he says they did 5 takes for this video, but he couldn't do anymore. I understand he did the vocals in one take in the studio.
I lost my dad 5 years ago. My brother was there with my mom he died at home (liver cancer) with my brother and my mom. I was not there. Wish I was. This i think of my brother. I'm crying with you
I would guess 80% of those who react to this performance never watch the last few seconds. You didn't either. One of the best parts and it is never seen by the majority who can't wait a couple more seconds to shut it off. That's very frustrating. What is so damn important that people feel they have to close it out before the end? The same thing happens when reactors watch the Johnny Cash performance of "Hurt". I'm 80 and running out of seconds but I wouldn't wouldn't want them back if it meant I would miss feelings they provide.
James Father has since passed away. After the kidney transplant James Dad was able to live a few more years. There is an interview, on RUclips of James Blunt speaking about this subject. 💔
This song totally wrecked me the first time I saw/heard it, and the second, and the third. I think it took me at least a dozen times hearing it to make it through without crying.
The song is so emotional that I think two small moments are missed ... and that add another touching dimension. The first is earlier in the song and James mentions putting his hand on his Dad's arm ... and in the video his Dad subconsciously and instinctively places his hand on James arm. And at the very end of the song - unfortunately you paused the video just one moment too quickly his Dad does this again. It reveals another dimension to their relationship

The story has been explained already, but one little comment. As most reviewers, you missed something at the end of the Video as you switched off to early. At the end his Dad is patting his arm to comfort him. I love this little gesture as it adds a lot to the Video.
I lost a niece 16 year old to suicide April 2023, lost my brother who was 49 to liver failure May 2023, lost my mum January 9th 3 days before my birthday 2024, my daughter dried to overdose Feb 2024 and twice in Nov 2024, lost my uncle Dec 28th 2024, lost my cousin Jan 2025 and found out my best friend fro school has stage 4 cancer diagnosed Jan 2025 so this song makes me cry like a baby everytime.
I didn't get to say "goodbye" to my dad. So whenever I hear this song, I wrap a "goodbye" up in all my love for my dad and send it out into the Universe. I do that because, tho I'm sure he's out having a helluva good time visiting other inhabited planets and having a beer with their inhabitants, I still so miss him. Everyday. You know?
Also No Bravery …the video they used for the song that he filmed while on deployment in Kosovo is another one that gets you and show the futility of War!!!!
The Blunt's. Both in the British army. Dad, a Colonel. James a Captain. The line: 'I'm not your father, you're not my son, we're just two grown men saying goodbye' was said to James by his father when James was deployed, with his regiment, to war in Kosovo. Neither thought either would ever see each-other alive again.
His real Dad is in the video. At that time he had stage 4 kidney disease and hadnt found a donor so had months to live. Both James and his Dad were ex military and very stoic, The lyric of "im not your son etc" was what his dad used to say when they were being deployed. Following the video a distant cousin came forward and was a match so his Dad had a successfull kidney transplanrt and is doing well.
Sorry, but no one can cover James's songs, they are all do very personal, you can hear the pain, love, anger, trepidation, in is voice. Nobody will have the emotion to do justice to the lyrics. This was one Tate around the kitchen table, after the shoot, all were in tears, Dad said "Why's everybody crying? I'm still here" Typical British "still upper lip".
Adam Levine’s voice is kind of similar except Blunt has a much more controlled upper register voice. There’s times to use falsetto and then there’s not. I love both voices and both people. No disrespect at all about Adam. He’s a gorgeous singer. Except the falsetto. I’m probably wrong, and family will hate me for saying that. Anyway, sorry
Hey William …one day when you are all grown up maybe one day you might have a son or daughter that cares about you… then maybe just maybe you will understand.. nothing was contrived in this video!!!
James also sang this in one take,no auto Tune and he was really crying 😢

You really need to check out the song "The Girl that Never Was" by James Blunt. It is as emotional as this song.
So in the end, James did chase his father's monster away.
There’s no comparison, James blunt is sitting next to his father, and everything about this video is true ! This video will make anyone breakdown
When you learn the story, the true story behind this song, and you realize his real father is sitting next to him the whole video, and you realize the tears are real emotions are real ! I’m sorry no one can match this

Yea this is actually his dad in the video. His dad was dying. He was dying from kidney disease stage 4. you can live with only one kidney, but his dad had already donated one of his kidney so it was not looking good for his dad.
💜💜💜
😢❤
Now try 'The Girl That Never Was".
Everyday. You know?
This isn’t the Ark, this is The Titanic and there’s not a life raft in sight.
You shut the video off too soon. His dad reaches over and pats his boys arm, giving him some comfort. Tear jerker for sure.
you should listen to his song THE GIRL THAT NEVER WAS
Also No Bravery …the video they used for the song that he filmed while on deployment in Kosovo is another one that gets you and show the futility of War!!!!
Thats his dad in video
Sorry, but no one can cover James's songs, they are all do very personal, you can hear the pain, love, anger, trepidation, in is voice. Nobody will have the emotion to do justice to the lyrics. This was one Tate around the kitchen table, after the shoot, all were in tears, Dad said "Why's everybody crying? I'm still here"
Typical British "still upper lip".
You need to check out James Blunt, the girl that never was
Is it AI?! See there is a difference in reality. 'OK I will now feel emotions for this.'
You stopped too soon, you missed his father patting his arm when it was over.
I’m not your son your not my father is what they said to each other before they went off to war both high rank in military
Aww man why do i drink then search up this song every damn time..Lost both parents in 2022 don't know why I punish myself 🤦
All contrived bullocks
Okay serial killer
Hey William …one day when you are all grown up maybe one day you might have a son or daughter that cares about you… then maybe just maybe you will understand.. nothing was contrived in this video!!!
