I'm not sure if this has already been shared in the comments, but when this song was done his father was dying from stage 4 kidney disease (he had already donated one of his kidneys) and James thought he was truly saying goodbye to his father so the emotions in this song are real. Fortunately after this song came out a distant relative saw it and donated a kidney which saved his father's life. The story goes that when James recorded this song there was not a dry eye in the room and James father said why is everyone crying I'm still alive.
Last Christmas I held my dad's unconscious hand while the nurses wheeled his hospital bed down the hallway from ICU to a hospice room where he passed 16 hours later was a tough one. This song hits too close to home. RIP Dad. He was a good man.❤
James Blunt wrote the 2 saddest songs I've ever heard. This and "The Girl That Never Was." Monsters resonates with me so much cause my dad recently died from Dementia after 6 years. Every bit of this song hits hard.
korn takes the role on saddest and most painfull song for me. its not a song ppl listen to for enjoyment its a let out of pain from the singer the song is from Korn and it called Daddy please be prepared cause the singer was the one experiencing this as a kid.
James and his father Charles, were both former officers in the British military. I heard that James donated all the proceeds from this amazing video to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much incredible work with and for ex-servicemen and women. What a lovely thing to do. Well done that man. 🙋♂
This song is applicable for any loss of some one who was important to you as you grew up. I home hospiced my mom during covid through Stage 4 cancer. We had time for our good byes through talks, smiles and hugs. But that day of passing, that last light, that last kiss to their brow saying goodnight. Im here for you. This song rings the tears from you in a good way. A form of tribute to their importance in your life and heart. James Blunt is a brilliant underrated underappreciated singer songwriter. So glad i rediscovered his music this year. Looking forward to seeing him in Boston for his Back to Bedlam 20th anniversary tour in 2025
Same here. Every time. My Dad had pancreatic cancer which is pretty much the worst as it's not easily diagnosed and by the time it is there is not much besides chemo. He survived another year and a half. He died in 2007 and I miss him every day. Make sure you tell your Dad you love him now. You can't late.
The song and the story behind it had a impact around the world as the donor register was inundated with donors signing up. It found a distant cousin for his father and many others worldwide so literally chased the monsters away for them and so many other families too. All the proceeds from this song to this day are ALL donated to the Help The Heroes Charity of Great Britain which helps our veterans get what they need, mentally physically and otherwise as both Colonol Charles Blunt ( his father) and Captain James Blunt were both in the British military and the line about not being father and son & being two men saying goodbye was something his father started when he started deployments which carried on as a beautiful tradition between the two when both were then being deployed. It's truly a beautiful song .
I remember reading somewhere that after the video shoot was over, his father asked why everyone, the camera men the director, why are they all crying? James was really crying in the video, he was not acting, that has to be one of the most raw, emotional songs and videos ever produced. His father had a terminal illness, but I think he fought it and beat it, that’s why he was there with him. I could be wrong, but I’m like 95% sure about those facts. Awesome reaction and Jasmine don’t feel bad, I’m a grown man and I still cry every time I hear this song.
Crying yes but James was in full control. His father forgot to put his hand on- to James , James looked at his father , looked down to his arm and his father responded. 3:48
His father was dying of stage 4 kidney disease after previously being a donor himself, this video actually saw a viable kidney sourced, and his father is doing well
This song is not just for sons and fathers, it's also for daughters and fathers. My father passed in the early 1990's after I was his primary care person, in his home, for years. His last days were horrific. His last emergency room visit I prayed to God for my father's death, not out of hate or anger or any selfish reason, I was begging God with tears streaming down my face to take my father's pain and suffering away. To release my father from his worn out used up body. My father passed away in less than 24 hours later. That's when I experienced grief beyond explanation, for the first time in my life, until my mother passed 3 yrs later.
Wow, thank you for sharing something so personal and heartfelt. Your story is powerful, it’s clear how much love and care you gave to your father, and how hard those last moments must have been. I can’t even imagine the strength it took to make that prayer out of pure selflessness. That kind of grief is so heavy, and it stays with you. I’m so sorry for your losses, both your dad and your mom. It means a lot that this song connected with you on such a deep level. Stories like yours remind us why we do what we do, thank you for trusting us with this. Sending you so much love.
@DoubleTakeJC We go through pain of all kinds in this world always for a reason. That reason is to share, at the appropriate time, to help others on this journey called life. I appreciate your response so very much and your reaction to this incredible song. It immediately pierced my heart with honest words, music and visuals. Because your channel popped up on my RUclips feed, I have found you and a talented new artist, for me!! Have a blessed New Year 2025 from a new American fan, Patty R. 🇺🇸
The girl that never was - official video by James Blunt is definitely one you should react to. James does a phenomenal job with lyrics and just putting raw emotion into his music.
Aww this really is an emotional one and I should have probably pre-warned you, but I think it would have taken away some of the impact. I first heard this a little while after my step-dad passed away (I didn’t ever know my real one) and I was in pieces, but it felt like everything I wanted to say was encapsulated in this song. I think others have explained the back story, but yeah, his dad was dying of stage 4 kidney disease and they hadn’t been able to find a donor up to this point, so it was a goodbye message from JB to his dad. Thanks to this song, a distant relative came forward and was a match, so his dad survived. It was actually a poem written by James’ sister that he converted into a song. Apparently everyone filming this was in tears, other than James’ dad who made a joke asking “why are you all crying, I’m still here” Masterpiece of a song imo and thank you for your genuine and beautiful reaction. ❤❤
Thanks so much for this(i think)🤔🥲 When i get alerts for reactions to this song,i rarely ever watch them anymore,i just don't put myself through it any longer, but seeing as it's Jasmine and Connor,i made an exception. I could tell at the beginning of the video that they had no idea what was coming, and thought to myself, whelp, the tone is about to take a nose dive very quickly, and sure enough......Cheers again my friend,Happy New Year, and the very best wishes for 2025❣
@@RENegadeMaster77 it’s definitely one of those songs I love/hate to listen to, I pretty much only go back to it through reaction channels now tbh it definitely gets me in the feels every time 🥲 I hope you had an awesome Christmas and the absolute best New Year mate, all peace, power and love my friend ❤️
It sounds like your step dad was your real one. I'm not the biological father of my son but I am the only father. My wife and I are also the only mother and father our (adopted) daughter has ever known. I am also the only father my biological sons have ever known. The stupid saying "blood is thicker than water" means nothing unless you are a narcissist man-child. My love for them all knows no bounds and I've been blessed beyond measure by the privilege of knowing them (all adults now).
@@gatekeeperbubba2946 @ShanLiB you’re absolutely right and we did all see him as our dad; he never wanted us to call him dad (not in a horrible way) it’s very long winded but it was said in a humble way, he wasn’t able to have kids of his own due to a motorbike accident and was paralysed, but the wheelchair was the last thing you noticed about him tbh. He was his huge personality not his disability. The funniest bloke in the room, always had a group of people around him laughing with him no matter whether it was a wedding reception, a wake or even just a supermarket! I guess what I’m saying is that we all considered him our ‘real’ dad, but he preferred the term ‘step dad’, honestly the best man I’ve ever known. We were blessed to have him in our lives.
no one is ever ready for that song the first time, especially going in blind. The first time it's like a gut punch straight to the heart, but listen to it a dozen times or more and slowly it turns into something more than sad. It's beautiful that he got to sing it to his dad before it was too late.
Think of Not only your dad but grandfather's or plier brothers. His sister wrote it . James simply took her poems and turned into a heart wrenching feeling. That seems we all can relate too on a different level.
Haven't seen emotional Conner with a F-U type line since Jenny & Screech! 😂😂 That's how I know it got him! ....... What a great emotional song and reaction too. #RoadTo100K ❤

Sending man love Conner 🤜 Lost my Dad in 2021. Healthiest man I know and has heart attack at 62. I was there quick and was doing CPR but I already knew it was too late but with the whole family watching over me I continued for 45mins.
What's sadder than the song is James has previously said he and his dad have never had an emotional open chat before , added with the overwhelming emotion in his thoughts and songs his dad and him both served in the forces , to not have shared that with his dad is 😥 , though I believe words are not neccesery to convoy love or emotions words add details to the raw feelings
Très belles réactions pour tous les 2 👍. Cette chanson est sublime mais tellement triste 😭. James Blunt est un artiste qui sait faire passer des émotions à ses fans, auditeurs 🥺👏. A+ 💞
James is one of the best in expressing emotions. One song that impressed me much is "Carry you home", but there is also the more recent "the girl that never was". All the best from the Netherlands!

James has another song from a personal experience of his called, “The Girl That Never Was”. The video is both beautiful and relatable to many people. Another great song called, “Carry You Home”, was inspired by a personal experience and is very meaningful and powerful! The official music video is incredibly well done and extremely memorable!❤
The first time I watched this song video I was just a devastated mess. I've seen it many many times both rewatching it and seeing others react to it and it still makes me well up, and sometimes still a hot mess. My dad passed years ago and we had a bit of a complicated relationship anyway. So to the girl being full of tears don't worry you aren't alone. And to the guy don't worry about tears let them fall when they come men can cry even though we are told our whole life otherwise. Try his song "The Child that never was" if you haven't already. Yes that tears my heart out also.
With James and his dad being military men, the ‘we’re two men saying goodbye’ was their way of saying I love you before they went to fight. Blunt snr was dying and this song was james’ raw untouched way of saying goodbye. Thankfully a distant relative saw this and came forward to be a donor in time and his dad is fine. We definitely need more emotional ‘sung in the moment’ songs, coz producers still wanted this auto tuned and cleaned up but James insisted it stayed as it is. Why mess with perfection?
This is so weird. I didn't search this song just came on my feed. My dad passed away 22years ago this January 10 coming up. I miss him so much. He was 37 when he passed. 2 days before his birthday. I'm 37 now and have 4 kids too and cannot think of me dying and leaving my kids behind. I'm scared of dying
If you would like another James Blunt song that is just as emotive, but in a different way, look at 'The Girl That Never Was'. Quite a recent song, too.
The "Well fuck you [...]" had me in stitches. As a 47 year old man I'm sitting here bawling my eyes out, pretty much. You guys being dead silent for the majority of the song is quite telling. You're never really ready to listen to stuff like this, even though some little part of you "needs" it, or if it's actually some kind of self torture. What do I know. Have a good one, much love.
You missed at the last second of the vid his dad patting his arm. Check out more of James' stuff. He's a brilliant songwriter, at his best when he writes about his lived experiences. His song "No Bravery" is about what he saw during the Kosovo War in the 90s when he was deployed there with the British Army under NATO. The music video includes his own video footage that he shot during that deployment.
I think the whole kidney cancer story was already shared, but James and his father were both mitlitary and his father said goodbye to him before a mission with 'we're just two grown man saying goodbye', so that is where this comes from, because I found the phrasing strange first time listening to this. Oh and James was in trouble for disobeying a direct command, but basically saved the world doing so. Could be the 'mistakes' line, but I'm not sure. Greetings from Germany, really enjoy your reactions.
I was fortunate in that I was able to have a comparable conversation with my dad before he passed. But this song was therapeutic. Not even sure how I came to know about it, I think it was a reactor channel. So just make sure you keep the air clear with those you love, you just don't know how long you'll have them for.
Maybe I am a monster but this song amuses me. When I hear it I can not help thinking of the bit in the video where James has to remind his dad to hold his arm (at about 3:50 in this reaction).
Oh, and to answer why people want to see the reactions of emotional music… it is the bare truth of being human. We like to see that other people are as human as we are.
You guys need to listen to Iam Tongi American Idol audition, covering James Blunt's Monsters. Listen to it for you only. I wouldn't ask you to make it a reaction.
"Just two grown men saying goodbye" are supposed to the words his father used, as a senior officer to his son (in the Blues & Royals) as he deployed on active service with NATO to Kosovo. Brits are not great a public displays of affection. This was an extremely raw, single take, sitting next to his then dying father who had never heard it. You can see how uncomfortable he was! But, thanks to this song, a happy ending. You probably should not watch "The Girl that never was" JB really deals with trauma by writing about it.
I felt bad laughing knowing a cry was coming but as soon as I saw that deep sigh ( 1:28 ) I couldn't help but crack up. Like, "Dammit, you guys are gonna make me cry." lol It's a rough one though to get through for sure.
Thanks for your true and honest reaction! This is one powerful song! The closeup of the face reminds me of Sinead O'Connor "Nothing Compares To You", have you listened to or reacted to this song before? would be curious on your thoughts of it! Keep up the good work!
@@AdamBazille The close up of the face totally reminded me of her song!! Its also a beautiful song that she made famous, Prince originally wrote it and it kind of bombed until she sang it!

Great song. What a difference between the way people display, hide or deny their emotions (James Blunt vs his father). I suspect this is largely generational.
I guess I've grown too bitter toward my parents to be able to feel these emotions toward them or relate to the song. Also, I do not particularly like the tone of James's voice, though I cried to another song of his years ago. I'm glad to hear that his dad is doing better now.
The record company wanted him to redo it as the video was too emotional but he refused. If you haven't already reacted to it another one to listen to is 'The Girl Who Never Was'.
Wow!! Not heard this song before. My dad passed away in 2018, a month short of his 90th birthday. Dementia had totally destroyed him. I held his hand, so thin and cold and i really wanted him to just go. Awful!!😢🇬🇧

SO BEAUTIFUL SONG....
My dad died when I was 17, he drove semi for a living and he died while he was on the road. I never got to say good bye. This song hits so hard.
Search another of his called "The girl that never was"
Agreed that one is another where a box of tissues is required.
I wouldn't go so far as to call it a fetish.... but I love watching emotional reactions. Especially when people cry. It reminds me to be human.
Hey guys if you thought that song was sad try watching James Blunts the girl that never was . It will get you both trust me
You have to listen James Blunt "girl that never was" too!
Feel like you summed it up perfectly!
James Blunt:
The Girl That Never Was
Carry You Home
No Bravery
and Dark thought
I think the whole kidney cancer story was already shared, but James and his father were both mitlitary and his father said goodbye to him before a mission with 'we're just two grown man saying goodbye', so that is where this comes from, because I found the phrasing strange first time listening to this. Oh and James was in trouble for disobeying a direct command, but basically saved the world doing so. Could be the 'mistakes' line, but I'm not sure. Greetings from Germany, really enjoy your reactions.
Bit of an avid watcher of reaction videos and being British it was refreshing to see a video that wasn't over the top.
Don't forget youtube throws up next video suggestions before the video finishes. You missed the ending.
I've been requesting Sinead O'Connor "Nothing Compares 2 U" for months! I really hope DoubleTake eventually reacts to it! TRUST ME! ❤
@@AdamBazille The close up of the face totally reminded me of her song!! Its also a beautiful song that she made famous, Prince originally wrote it and it kind of bombed until she sang it!
@@timg764I'm from Minnesota, lived across the street from Dezzy Dickerson's parents...My mom went high school with him.. (He was the guitar player in the Revolution- Prince's band at the height of Purple Rain) played with his kids when they'd visit. We were all 7-10 years old. Met PRINCE multiple times as a kid when he'd visit there. Crazy time. Being a kid I just thought it was normal! 😂😂 "Nothing Compares 2 U" has so much meaning to me you'll never know. PRINCE was a genius. 💜💜💜💜
@@AdamBazille He was an amazing song writer and singer!!!
@@timg764💯 right he was! DoubleTake has done some PRINCE reactions. Check them out. Stay up Tim. ✌🏻💜💜💜
If you thought Monsters caught your attention, you should try James Blunt's song The Girl That Never Was. He is amazing with the emotional issues.
Have you listened to him sing The Girl That Never Was or Goodbye My Lover?
We have heard goodbye my lover but not the other
This one got me too. My dad had “monsters” and took his own life, so I feel the song deeply. Please have a look at Dimash Qudaibergen if you have not already, considered by many to be best male voice on the planet right now. Dimash also covers Lose Control by TS with Chantè Moore, here is the link. ruclips.net/video/ugEBRmsuVaY/видео.htmlsi=g__nxfXcbFfXwgrZ
His next one is even sadder, The Girl That Never Was.
You should check out Elvie Shane my boy great song
😢😢❤
james recorded this in 1 shoot.... no retakes, nailed it the 1st time
The saddest song I've ever heard, a child taking the reins and chasing the monsters away.
My daddy is on dialysis this song makes me cry every 😢
Feighting the tears makes no sense. It makes a "bigger" man, if u allowe it. Thanks for reacting!
Great song. What a difference between the way people display, hide or deny their emotions (James Blunt vs his father). I suspect this is largely generational.
On the same bandwagon - Sam Tompkins hero live please
You must try the girl that never was by James blunt 🫶🏼
You need to watch james,,,,the girl that never was.
If you think that was sad, react to ‘Girl That Never Was’ one of his other songs he 😢
I guess I've grown too bitter toward my parents to be able to feel these emotions toward them or relate to the song. Also, I do not particularly like the tone of James's voice, though I cried to another song of his years ago. I'm glad to hear that his dad is doing better now.
This is definitely one good way to test out how waterproof your make-up is.
You must react to
“the girl that never was” by James Blunt, you won’t regret it.
You should listen to his song "The girl that never was"
No Bravery
The Girl That Never Was
It gets me every time... 😪
This lost in the song tournament. Just like "Zombie". Sometimes the best songs don't win...... (Still bitter about "Zombie"'s defeat!) 😉
It was James’s sister who wrote the song
The record company wanted him to redo it as the video was too emotional but he refused. If you haven't already reacted to it another one to listen to is 'The Girl Who Never Was'.
It’s was like 10 seconds in & you could tell she was going break down lol.
😆😆😆
Wow!! Not heard this song before. My dad passed away in 2018, a month short of his 90th birthday. Dementia had totally destroyed him. I held his hand, so thin and cold and i really wanted him to just go. Awful!!😢🇬🇧
Good job guys it's a toughy
I thought I knew I heartbreak and then this. So raw. So honest. So not . As a wife and mother its just a lot
