Voltaire's such a cool, laid back dude. I dig him
I always have seen Goth as maintaining a creative, constructive, and purposeful balance between good and evil...Goth or not, we all have to walk that tightrope in life...We're human!
You sit have just created a quote
why is nobody commenting on his hat? It is an awesome hat.
I saw Voltaire two years ago at Whitby Goth weekend. It was a dream come true, such a beautiful man. I always wanted to see him play live, and got the opportunity to speak to him after his lineup. He was just a lovely person, highly intelligent with a wicked sense of humour. This is a Goth people this is what they look like dark and friendly. You dont need two thousand piercings and tattoos to be a Goth........
Love your comment. You are so lucky. I've been wanting to attend Whitby Goth Weekend. It's cool to know that he was nice in person. I also agree with you that you don't have to have a hundred visible piercings to be goth.
"To prove it, I'm going to be sad all of the time!" Voltaire has got that down. Professional saddad.
"Where you're off to the psychiatrist to get pumped full of drugs" Pretty much how my parents and teachers handled it while I was in school.
I love him so much I'm am a happy goth u will see me smiling and flashing my fangs everywhere I go
I just l-o-v-e this guy!
He is one of the few musicians that I would actually like to meet in person. He has a great sense of humor, and is obviously rather intelligent.
Plus, has anyone noticed that he manages to be funny without using a single cuss-word?
Voltaire is amazing!!! However, I think one part came out wrong. Goths embrace the dark side of everything, like dark feelings, dark personality, death etc. as being a part of life and hauntingly beautiful, but they are not sad all the time. He was kind of joking/over-exaggerating. :P I'm kind of Goth myself, but not the very noticeable kind. I have a mix of modern dress, graphic tees, and a subtle Victorian flare. I also like steampunk, and I decorate my room with Gothic faery statues and othe
I love Voltaire's laugh.
It's adorable XD
Yeah, honestly I just find this particular type of music more entertaining. Different strokes for different folks'. But in a few of Voltaire's songs you notice things that you tend to overlook, like in 'God Thinks' and 'Crusade' they would give any churchy kind of person a bad feeling, that's because it's sobering, and I value it for keeping me at reasonable level of humility.
He's got like... the most amazing top hat. I can't even... draw my attention away from it....
Dat hat doe
+Caden Boissineau
Ah yes. The legendary Top Hat of Voltaire. Years from now we will make a pilgrimage to pay tribute to the glory of his hat every friday the 13th. :p
+Aligor Zeimet i promoted a show for him last year and he didn't wear it. i was disappointed. he told me he's trying to phase it out. :-(
Butch Mandrake
I see. Unfortunate. But his choice. I will personally always remember him by his Top Hat.
i'm not a goth, but i'm fascinated by goth culture . i think it's so pretty :o the only reason why i'm not calling myself a goth is because i dont wear goth clothes only , i like other things too . if i'm talking of my tastes and my personality , i would probably say i am , but i dont have the look xD
i agree, i mean at what point in time did it become a sin to have a bad day?
I identified as goth for a long time to weed out the people whom i did not care to interact with. Yes i loved the music, yes i am dark and mysterious but mostly, if you did could not see past my dress and come introduce and speak with me, i did not want to talk to you anyway. really, still am "goth," just got lazy with the dress
Now that's edgy as fuck!
James Annis I'm a lazy goth too lol
You sound like a bitch
Exactly! I listen to more goth than metal but I still listen to metal. Metal has its own particular sound and musical patterns that are extremely different from goth. It's kind of like saying hip hop and rap are the same.
We say "the world ain't perfect, but that's what makes it beautiful"
I have personally met Voltaire and he really is a very nice guy. and I think he should be respected as a person and a Goth because he has been around the block and found something he enjoys.
LOL... yarn hair and techno sticks... he nailed it!
I believe that goth is finding beauty in what many consider to be ugly and or dark. It's also showing the world it's darker self and fighting ignorance against the masses.
for me, having a goth friend means you have someone to share a sense of black comedy with, someone who likes b-(horror)movie kitsch as much as you do, and someone who will always be dressed better than you are no matter what.
and someone who introduced you to Voltaire.
lol it's fun.
Firstly, that hat is fantastic. Slap some grey goggles on and you now hail from another, steamier, punkier dimension. This is a great answer. For me, I got into the goth scene at a youngish age. I see goth as being similar to the punk scene except instead of anger and hatred, its sadness and poetry. I used to go to this little club in Baltimore called Orpheus back when my friends would meet up there. I thoroughly enjoyed the limited experiences I had going to Revolutions in DC. Primarily I enjoyed the club scene. Ended up at a neo nazi club by accident once because I thought it was just a really hardcore goth club. Awkward times indeed! But I became goth because I got made fun of in high school, worse than most I imagine. People fear what they don't understand, so some people would fear me which I found hilarious. Later I gained a lot of close friends that were also social outcasts and as I grew older I stopped wearing typical Tripp and Lipservice clothing and I guess you could say I'm a "casual" goth now. Its all hoodies and hats and Black Rainbows. Either way, I am glad you gave a great answer to a question I'm sure we all experience multiple times in our lives. I do miss going to Orpheus though. That place was small but it had a great atmosphere.
I've been to Orpheus several times- the people there are so nice. The last time I went there was Halloween last year when I was with my boyfriend and my best friend. Even though there wasn't a whole lot of people there, because the party didn't start until Saturday night, we had an awesome time. You should come back again! I've always wanted to go to Industrial Night where they play that "techno" music Voltaire talks about- it's called industrial music, like The Prodigy and Combichrist.
whatamusicgeek I love industrial! I didn't know they still did industrial night. Funker Vogt, Combichrist, Icon of Coil, Suicide Commando, all the good stuff!
Yeah, I think they still do that. My best friend has some songs by Combichrist, like "Get Your Body Beat". Good stuff.
You know what, I read this comment this morning and it has been running through my mind all day. I really like what you said here.
My uncle went to multiple Bauhaus concerts in the 80's but one he remembers more vividly than others. Halfway through the concert he decided to go out into the hall and buy some drinks. When he went into the hallway, all of the goth kids were sitting there smoking. None of them ever had entered the show, or watched it at all.
Goth is really more about the fashion, the look, then the actual feeling of sadness, or isolation. People who dress normally feel those feelings.
Gotta say; I love this guy!
@WireRimmed I'm catholic and when I was around 14/15 and going to sunday school for my communion/confirmation, there were goth girls with black lipstick sitting in the front pews and a guy with a pentacle belt buckle passing around the collection plate. :)
You are a genius, I'm kinda goth already and I knew quite a bit about goth but.... I can't even then of a response the that logic, you are amazing.
I love his book!
"There's no such thing as sadness!"
"Yes there is! i'll prove it!" T_T
lol!
it's kind of funny that he says that goth is to accep the sadness when he himself and his music is so happy most of the time.
his face was actually used as a model for a marvel legends dr.strange figure..and i agree voltaire is awesome!!
I'm triggered they didnt link his youtube.
No worries. Sorry I praticed a little necromancy there, didn't mean to dig up old things.
I didn't mean to sound confrontational, it's just that I see some of the subcultures I'm part of, like the aforementioned punk, that fragement and bicker over a need to feel special and it annoys me when we should be emphasizing what we have in common instead of dividing ourselves further, you know?
@Starscream3352 Yeah, I may be wrong, but I think he was playing on the 'we used to be punks with mohawks' thing ... adjusting his hat so as not to cramp his.
Ha! I'm both!
But I gotta agree with you, there is a difference between the two, though I wouldn't say goth makes light of anything. It's more acceptance of the fact that the world sucks and sometimes even preferring it's imperfections to a perfect counterpart.
And being Neo Victorian. That part f***ing rocks!
Goth has evolved so much since the 80's that there are simply many different styles and variations of it now.Idc what anyones says, they are not bitter enemies! They are FAMILY.They do not care if you are tall, short, fat, skinny, white, black, straight, gay, etc. There are so many different standards of "goth" that it's a bit pompous with all the labeling.I find that the people who dismiss others so liberally as "posers" ARE the posers.
I am not goth and I love Voltaire's work. Stereotypes are stupid and is always around. Generalizations are so stupid, too bad society can't grow up.
He's right about the misconception that Goth's don't have a sense of humor. Honestly, I think Goth's have the best sense humor of all, and it's just warped enough to keep you on your toes.
when I read this i felt that there are some people in this world who dont always belive what culture tells them and really try to conprehend things and dont assume all the damn time
I don't think I've ever met anyone who thought that there were no sad emotions and that sad people need to be 'helped'. I dunno, I can come home and tell my parents I was sad at school and they're just like "Well, maybe tomorrow will be better". We're not goth, though. o3o We just realistically understand that sadness exists, as most people do I think.
How come nobody is watching this? Where are the comments? Could it be that no one ever heard of him? I know I haven't. . What fuckin' films did he make?
I love Voltaire so much.
@NyxNeviam i agree with u the worse thing is that many people old or young dont know what goth is this should be a good explaining for them :))
Aurelio, fascinating as always....x
Pardon me, but what do we NOT categorize? It's in our nature to classify things by their characteristics which I suppose is a survival mechanism of sorts at its core.
Potential threats become easier to identify and communication is much simpler if we can quickly get across to one another the type of thing we're referring to.
This is just my opinion in short anyway!
I'm goth.to me goth is showing who u r,being your self, open minded and is proud of it.why do people always think it's worshiping the devil? I hate that.
....Why did I expect a Voltaire version of "What is love"? ...
If that's how he defines goth, then I'm the most cheerful goth you've ever met.
Yal Rathol it's a bit of a cliche and shallow answer he gives. There isn't really a definition that isn't just music and fashion. Anything else is pretentious wank.
A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk... Have at you!
I agree smiletehk. In the nineties when NIN and Manson were big they were actually considered "gothic" at the time, combined with industrial metal. Now everythings emo :(
god i'm old......
Bring back neo Victorian!!!!
@NightFlinger Well I might be a goth then since I don't particularly care that much if I die. "If I die I die no use worrying about it" and I do love horror and dead stuff so yeah.
DAMN THAT HAT IS AWESOME!!!!
I admire him so much, I got into the goth movement because I realized that at a young age I was never good at pretending or ignoring the truth, s i got older i developed certain ideals which conflicted with the mainstream views, beliefs, and norms of the wider society. When people got to know me I was labelled weird as i was different from all the other kids my age in terms of everything from goals to music tastes.... but what the hey maybe i'm just in it cuz i'm a whiny brat who likes black ;)
Preach man \(^.^)/ goth is just facing the fact that people are sad and there is hurt. Unlike the mainstream that believes the world is a whole buncha shinny happy people. And i have a sense of humor and everyone thinks im hilarious so they dont think im goth.
Voltaire is awesome! A an artist and as a human. I'm not really a goth, but I really like them. Sadly there aren't any where I live. :´(
Two things. One, not goth. Two, love his fucking hat. Like a sir.
oh come on people Voltaire is awesome where are the views and comments orz >__
He sounds like a fun guy.
Voltaire is an awesome dude! His music is also really catchy. And definitely not gothic. But it is better that way.
Eh it's a subgenre within goth just like gothic lolita, victorian goths, pastel goth, etc.
Then again, we all have our own definitions but that's usually a well-known idea
Voltaire the speaker of the goth community
Techno? Hurl!
I love his hat.
Voltaire is awsome!!!
God I love his hat.
What is Goth? Baby don't cut me, don't cut me, no more...
I want to meet him so much.
VOLTAIRE!!!! This man is a god!
@TheTwatle
Yes, new clothing is expensive! I sometimes wonder if academia is accepting towards subtley gothic clothing. I hope so...
Now who would dislike this vid?
@ZuZaarr yea, ive heard some metal songs, it isnt really my style of music, but i agree with you about the lifestyle, it is basicly the same lifestyle.
WELL...his hat clearly out cools mine
God..his voice
He looks like Jim Raynor became a goth :D
@NyxNeviam Slipknoit is metal and yes lots of goths listen to metal but its not actual gothic music
Cyber... GOTH, why can Cyber Goth not just be a subculture of the Gothic movement? After all there is Goth in the name of this subculture.
wow I posted this a year ago lol. I didn't expect to still be getting comments >.> I only pointed it out because he said goth had gone techno, but goth (as in classic gothic) never changed, new 'sub styles' if you will just emerged. Though to be honest cyber gothic clothing doesn't have *that* much in common with the classic gothic styles over all anyway. But I'm not really bothered, people can call things what they like.
He is so cool and laid back guy. I like him 😊
@wildluigi77777 thats pretty much metal as well, I am not a both, nor am I religious, but Metal has some of the same misconceptions, honestly i think the same for anything dark has it too. But even as a metalhead I do have respect towards goths, I even like goths
@Cuntinator awsome metal music with guitars+voltair=voltair awsome metal music with guitar
@ShiroiFang That was the first thing I thought when I saw him in this video!
Goth is fun, creative, dark sleek and sexy.
God he's so awesome
It's Ravers in denial.
I love this guy!!!!!
I would be pleased to be sad by his side!!!!
this guy is pure awsome
im a christan goth, i was born an christan and i dont intend to change it. Im lucky my church is accepting to everyone. Some arnt so lucky...
@metaldorksforever666 you should listen to mirrorthrone, its the beautiful child of the goth and metal, that band is hella sick, so as other avant garde black metal
If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be proud to say Im a goth.Where I live is so stereotypical that all men have to be buff jerks and girls have to be pretty and be dumb blonds.Back in school I never showed my true self because I was terrified that I WOULD have to go to doctors even though I knew nothing was wrong with me.I acted normal most of the time but every time I showed my darker side I was still shunned. But now I say fuck society, sad is great, feeling is great and being myself is even better.
This guy speaks the truth. Soo much truth
I feel the techno thing he's talking about is actually cyber goth style. I'm into that, but it's not goth, it's cyber goth :P
I don't think all cyber goths relate to Goth at all, it's about as connected as like Punk is to Goth. People don't say punks are goth. Aesthetically and in terms of ideals, cyber goth isn't really that similar t all. It's just another alternative subculture. However at the end of the day, people should refer to themselves how they want, and everyone has a different definition of what different subcultures mean (part of the reason I do not define myself by any one alone) so it doesn't matter.
@CreedOfHeresy I'm a METALHEAD GOTH! Only because I don't know which scene I like more, metalhead or Goth?
This man is brilliant!!!
What is the name of the women interviewing him? can anyone help me?
What do you think is the biggest misperception in goth culture?
"we almost never really kill people" omg he´s so funny! I love Voltaire!
top hats whispers (fuck yeah)
Post-Punk/Victorian/Cyber-Techno
