    This is the full segment on FOX News about the 'Goth Murder Madness', which featured an interview with the musician Voltaire (voltaire.net). Voltaire comes in about half way through this segment.
    Clip is from Oct. 22nd, 2005. And I actually had the pleasure of seeing him play a free instore at OzoneUK in Portland right before he was whisked away to do this interview, so his 'pre-interview' talk was pretty funny too. He actually said they'd call him 'Satanic Goth' or something like that, which as you watch, they got kind of close to his prediction.
    I know someone else has already posted just the interview part, but I think the two minutes before the interview gives the interview some more context. Mostly because the woman says 'gothic stuff' and 'killed so desperately', which...I'm not even sure what that means...

    Voltaire is a really decent human being.
    My young daughter, also a fan of his, recently had to have a liver transplant, and while she was in the hospital, he actually called her up and talked with her and lifted her spirits, immensely.
    You just don't find people like that very often in life.
    I can't thank him enough for being real, and kind.

      ***** Biased and unbased as f*ck: Fox news, or any AAA american news outlet. The news also directly relates murder to satanism, even though satanism hasn't been directly / indirectly linked to murder since the dark ages, something they should drop right away before everyone sensible says "Nope, fuck it, news media is a laughing stock."

      Its a double standard, especially in the 21st century, when we live in a democracy. Im just thinking about how heavy metal seems to have been so dismissed and condemned in the past, and no longer seems to be, least not in the west. Havent they really learned how stupid it is to condemn an entire musical genre, or everyone that listen to this music? Its an interesting note, also, that some goths are also metalheads, lol.

    • @SebastianMichealis
      @SebastianMichealis 8 лет назад

      It is not a double standard, Fox News clearly states where it stands. They are just defending the values the accepted. That's all.
      I don't find it interesting too, because it is quite obvious: Fox is conservative. They aren't hiding it.

    • @niallblack2794
      @niallblack2794 6 лет назад

      peklerks I understand I'm a little late to the party, but I might hope for your pardon in that regard. I just wished to say that I wholeheartedly agree with your astute comments regarding the conservatism of Fox as an outlet. However, the problem is twofold:- their audience is often radical but thinks itself conservative; And their opponents think that Fox wishes to be anything other than the niche it fulfills- sensationalistic, radical entertainment without moral or ethical concern. These issues are systemic across almost all news outlets worldwide due directly for the human need for safe excitement. Living vicariously through the sensationalized stories of others from one's couch and simultaneously denouncing, ridiculing and criticising the actions of those same persons is the worst kind of hypocrisy. However, it is fuelled by insecurity and a certain kind of conservatism of action regarding risk. Why risk anything when you can habituate sitting in front of a box that tells you what you want to hear. This is the true horror of all this. The echo chamber effect of confirming radical opinions thriugh imbalanced reporting and the power that has when used irresponsibly in such a cavalier manner.
      Finally, we must remember that to laugh at the radicalized conservatives is to belittle them also. They are still fellow humans and should be treated as such less we turn to elitism of persons and views. But truly, no person can be elite and no view can be elite without by it's very nature being flawed and thus lesser. Thus degrading the supposed superiority of said view or person. Elitism by it's nature puts you last in the queue of human decency. To afford someone a kindness not shown to you with no desire for recompense is to truly be kind. And the only way to be better is yo better others and yourself in harmony. And losing judgemental mindsets is the most important step on the road to actually progressing toward collectivistic acceptance of humanity. But many do not desire that and so Fox "news" still exists to be a figurehead for an actual 'movement' grassroots level elitism. This is what is truly dangerous and the more plainspeaking and understandable an argument the more this movement seeks to gather followers everywhere.

      Responding to a 4 year old comment but oh well... Depending on where you live, you may very well never be exposed to alternative subcultures. I live in quite a small place in a very sparsely populated country and I was always the only goth in school. I did see one other girl who was kind of alternative with facial piercings and such, but no goths. I've gone to three different schools (for different ages) and they all had approximately 400 students each so they weren't very big. Now I study at university and of course I haven't seen everyone there but so far I haven't spotted any goths. A few people with metal band shirts though, which is about the closest I've seen... Point being, you can go to public school and still never meet any goths :P

    I'm not goth, but I've always found that (and notice that I'm ignorant of what exactly is goth) the "negative" music like linkin park when growing up was actually an outlet for the bad stuff that happened to me as a child and made me feel good, and I'm the most stupidly happy, quirky, "not goth" guy around (this is me STILL saying it in ignorance)
    I think that the whole idea that people do get these feelings and can relate to the gothic lifestyle, as well as them coming from all walks of life, signifies that this world is not all black and white and needs to be addressed as such.

    "Goth movement." ....guys, the gothic subculture has been around for literally hundreds of years. This is just part of the world at this point, it's evolved over the course of years, but it's always existed. Stop calling it a movement damn it. I'm not sure why this irks me so much, but I love history and I've always paid attention to the subcultures that existed throughout. Gothic has always existed, it just changes. This coming from someone who, in the sense of clothing and hobbies, is not a goth.

    • @filipematias5127
      @filipematias5127 6 лет назад +4

      Nikolai Lugo : The Goth subculture refers specifically to the music scene that evolved from punk rock in the late 70's that was known as post-punk Goth-rock (Batcave) and which incorporated together the cultural referencies of the punk movement, the Romantic DARK Neo-GOTHIC literature, fashion and art of the late of the Victorian period (late XIX century) and the Horror movie classics (silent black and white films and Hammer's movies) !
      Gothic is a more broad therm than GOTH and it refers to embracing life and appreciating the beauty of its darker aspects (we are old souls... we show our sadness for the human condition... we reflect our DARK SIDE... it is present within each and every one of us!
      All GOTHS are Gothic but not everyone who likes Gothic or dark things is a GOTH!
      And please don't confuse the Halloween or Emo bullshit with GOTH!

    I not a true goth, but I do like some of the music(of course I like a lot of different music types). One thing I have grown to really despise is how the news media has changed in the last 40 years. The news media is no longer unbiased and they are rarely 'fair'. The news media uses body position(language), word tone, word selection, and graphic images to influence the reader, listener, or viewer. The news media has realized that they can increase ratings by sensationalizing any and every news event, and they do so. The news media has lost my trust, and they are not likely to ever get it back.

Much like Marilyn Manson, Voltaire is incredibly smart and well spoken - no journalist is going to trick him into saying something he doesn't want to.

    Great interview, brief as it was by necessity of the format, Voltaire!As he said : Had this young man been of most any other identity [save Punk, Emo, Rave, Steampunk, or an orientation like Trans, Gay, Junkie, etc] it is highly unlikely that he would be either focused on so intently or held up as an 'example' of a dangerous & even evil subculture, especially when he was still only a defendant. It is clearly because of his Goth identity that such a voyeristic horror attached itself to not only the case but him & his wider life.
    Voltaire is a marvellous person & a wonderful spokesman for The Gothic Scene as a whole. There are very good reasons many of us who are Goth, Punk, & otherwise 'alternative' in our identification respect him so much, for he has put himself out there for the wider world to attempt to champion our lifestyle & resolve the most damaging stigma that the square or 'normal' World holds about us. My father has been friends with Voltaire, & I have long looked up to both My Father & Voltaire as exemplary members of the alternative scene in general. Thanks for posting this!

    It's so weird that this is called a 'Goth' murder, only because the presumed attacker wears black and hasn't had a haircut in quite some time. There is no information available about the kid himself. Did he have mental issues? An affair with the wife? Hell, maybe he was just pissed at the guy or his parents! There are so many reasons why somebody this young and fragile would do something like this. Don't blame him because he is 'Goth', blame him because he"s a 'murderer'. Don't blame the goths..

    Voltaire made some valid points. He's right about the whole "goth murder" headline. Would it be considered a Goth Murder if it was a rapper was involved? What is it about this murder that makes is a Goth murder istead of a murder?

    I have to shake my head a little at the way the man pronounces 'Voltaire'.
    Specifically because he makes it sound like it's a pseudonym Voltaire picked to sound 'mysterious'. Of course in reality, it's actually just his name: Voltaire Hernández.
    The philosopher of the same name, however, WAS using it to sound mysterious.

    The song BRAINS!, which is the one I assume you are referring to, was written for an episode of the Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. The episode in question featured a brain-eating space rock. Not cannibalism. And anyway, they are two different things. Like, if... I dunno, peanut-butter cookies were near and dear to me, that doesn't mean someone who sings a song about them is one of my best mates. Bit of a stretch, I know, but I think you know what I mean.

  • @Dreznin
    @Dreznin 15 лет назад

    Nah, I think he named Country and Rap because they are both distinctly different genres from those that are associated with Goth. Goth actually got its start as part of the late 70s post-punk movement and now includes some punk and metal subgenres.
    Besides, Voltaire, while popular with goths, doesn't play music that is classified under goth. His music is satirical and varies in genre. He has some that are somewhat rap, others that are somewhat country. I think he was just making a point.

    "You're probably the first goth I've met."
    To me, that sums the whole situation up. These guys don't have a clue what they're talking about and they use lables to sensationalise and create stories where none exists. Voltaire does an excellent job of establishing that media inspired fear of the goth look is completely unfounded and irrational.

    One of my favorite things about this interview is that if you look at Voltaire from the eyes down, he looks perfectly average for a news interview. He's wearing a nice shirt, a tie, sitting casually, but not like he's bored. He speaks in a calm, intelligent manner, politely trying to inform these people without being rude. And then, you look at his hair, and you're forced to think that if it was paired with any face other than his, this would never have gone so well.

  • @Graviga7
    @Graviga7 17 лет назад

    I think this was quite a good interview, the guy really knows what he is talking about, as opposed to a lot of people. It's important that people understand that Goth isn't an easy thing to define, it isn't the stereotype that people easily accept.
    The 'Goth' image comes about through the extremists, people need to understand that it's really not about what they think it is.

    I love that the camera flashed on him just as he was rolling his eyes at the correlation between goth and psychopathic murderers.
    I'm glad that even in the few shorts years since this interview there has been less prejudice against the goth community. I'm not saying it's gone completely, but it's definitely not as rampant as it once was.

    @slanis
    (sry, I have to make a second part)
    Gothic Rock was first, then the fans of this music formed cliques and finally a scene. But it wasn't until the end of the 80s that they actually called themselves "goths" and before the term gothic became trendy they were named "Waver" (especially in Germany). It is true, that it evolved into a lifestyle, but gothic is basically a music genre.
    I hope you don't mind that I added this historical facts to your comment.
