I was an optician for 38 years. I'm now retired. A few years before I retired one of my girls heard about several on line glasses and since she wore glasses herself she of course was very interested in checking these sites out not only for herself but her co workers as well. I was the store manger and the only male in our store with all of the opticians and optical assistants being young females. Not surprising that all but two of them wore glasses. So it was along before they were all ordering their own glasses as well as prescription sunglasses from a number of these sites. I was very skeptical of these sites as to just how accurate the prescriptions of their glasses might be so I insisted that before any of them started wearing their new glasses they would first allow me to check the prescriptions of their glasses. As it turned out all of the glasses had their prescriptions as accurate as they could possibly be. I was actually very impressed with the quality of their glasses. So much so that I wrote down the names of the 3 sites I liked the best. The sites were Zeelool, Eye Buy Direct and Zenni Optical. Since retiring I have placed orders for well over 100 pairs of glasses from Zenni for my own family as well as many many friends and friends of their friends as well. I've never had even one problem with Zenni. I only had one order that didn't arrive within 14 days and waas only a few days later than that. The reason why it was delayed was because as you know the glasses come from Hong Kong which is China and every so often a shipment will get stuck in customs. Not just my order but a shipment is probably several hundred pairs of glasses. When this happens Zenni pulls the orders that are held up and they remake every one again and reship them. As it turned for me I got one order one day and the next day the remade order arrived. So my customer ended up getting two pairs for the price of one. I really love your attitude about glasses, and you're right. I don't really know how poor your eyesight is but considering that you had had glasses since you were 12 i'm sure your eyes require full tome vision correction for you to function properly. So I think everyone, especially women, should have more than just their one pair of glasses to provide themselves with a little different glasses look. It always seemed strange to me why any woman would have dozens of pairs of shoes and handbags but only pair of glasses to wear. You clearly feel the same way. I do get it when the only choice anyone that was buying their glasses from the local optical store down the street and paying hundreds of dollars for them. But now a person can order a really cute pair of glasses in her prescription for about the same as what a Big Mac Combo Meal would cost at McDonald's. As you know Zenni has a rather nice selection of glasses including single vision lenses for as little as $6.95. Now of course getting the "high index" lenses is an option you feel you need so your lenses don't appear too thick on the edges. In watching your video your lenses do appear to be nice and thin looking and you only got the medium index option of 1.61. Do you mind me asking what your full prescription is? I'm curious if your prescription really requires your lenses to be made thinner. It odes make a difference since you prefer semi-rimless style frames which exposes the edge thickness of your lenses. I am a huge a fan of semi-rimless frames because they really allow for your face to be seen so much better than a full style plastic frame. Also usually semi-rimless frames are lighter in weight as well. Your glasses seem to be a prefect fit on you and you appear to be very comfortable wearing them. By the way I would say that you have a "oval" shaped face . When getting prescription sunglasses did you also get the optional "high index" lenses for them as well? If so, you shouldn't have because sunglasses have dark lenses the thickness isn't anything people ever worry about, especially with a full plastic frame. The firs sunglasses you said are a bit loose on your face. Don't be afraid to take them, and any other glasses you might have that needs some fitting, to any optical shop and have them adjust them for you. They don't care where your glasses came from. Remember even Walmart's has a nice vision center right in the front of the store that can do that for you. As an optician my only comment is that I would suggest that you should consider a larger size for sunglasses even though their bot really cute. You want your sunglasses to block out as much sunlight as possible. I can see that a lot of sunlight will be getting in your eyes. just not directly. I really like the small rimless glasses on you. It's almost like you're not wearing glasses at all. You hardly even notice that you're even wearing glasses. And they certainly don't cover any of your face. It's too bad that they bother you because you see the hinges and the bridge so well but I really thin if you were to wear them more often you would soon not notice those things anymore rather quickly. I really do like them on you and really nice that they have a sunglass clip as well. That pair of sunglasses that are crooked I think whoever tried adjusting them didn't know what they were doing. Before you thrown them in drawer and forget you have them I would highly suggest going to another optical shop and see if they don't do a better job of getting them straight and fitting tighter as well. I know I could make them fit you perfectly. Please try again someplace else. That pair of glasses that you said were awful I liked how they looked on you and you seemed to like how they looked just not how they felt on you. Of course they need to be comfortable to wear or you're not going to like them. You didn't like the earpieces at all being straight out like that. The only nice thing about that style of earpiece is that it helps if you have a husband or bf that tends to remove your glasses to kiss you because they an be slid off so easily without any harm to your ears. Of the 14 pairs you showed how many are in your current prescription? You have so many really great looking glasses that I was surprised not to see you wearing glasses much more often then you seem to. You seem to wear contacts much more often than glasses. That' seems a shame considering how good you look wearing glasses.
Thank you so much for the kind words and thoughtful comments Jim! I so appreciate it! I’ve done so many makeup videos that I tend to not wear glasses in my videos much so I can do makeup or show it off. I also don’t want to blind anyone with lights flashing on my glasses. I really appreciate your comments though! I’ve been thinking of branching out into some new video styles, like this one, and it can be so much more comfortable to have glasses on when I’m reading research or just in general really. I wear glasses 98% of the time and contacts when I’m feeling fancy or wanting to feel put together! I LOVED getting to know some of your story! Thanks so much for sharing! What an incredibly cool insider, expert experience on the glasses industry and how it has changed. Extra cool that you got to see it evolve! I LOVE that you tested your employees online glasses! What a cool experiment. And very reassuring! Thanks for sharing the sites you liked best! I’ve never heard of Zeelool but I actually have an account on EyeBuyDirect and I don’t think I’ve ever purchased from them! Very nice to know they get your stamp of approval! Maybe I should do an EyeBuyDirect vs Zenni test or something. I have also only had the best experiences with Zenni. I actually ordered some glasses at the very start of the pandemic...they must have had some sale around then...and they were delayed because of everything going on, and they actually sent me a generous coupon to make up for the delay! So I ordered more! I actually have 4 pairs that are with my current prescription. I actually tried them on in order of newness so the first 4 in the video are my new ones. I actually had a 5th pair that I lost somehow, but those were the cat eyes that didn’t seem to suit me. You’re totally right, so many people have multiple pairs of shoes and just one pair of glasses. I’m actually an amputee so I don’t have many shoes...maybe I make up for it with glasses! On the right, I’m -3.00 and on the left I’m -4.50. It always prompts me to upgrade my order to 1.61 so I listen to it haha. I think it started doing that once my prescription changed from -4.0 to -4.5 so I assume the difference is most notable on the left. That is such a good point about the sunglasses. Looks like I have ordered them at 1.61 previously so maybe I’ll switch to the thicker ones and save myself a couple bucks! I’ve been surfing through Zenni to find some lovely oversized frames for sunglasses so I’ll definitely add those to my order. I really appreciate all the kind words! I’m going to give those rimless glasses more of a shot! I think you’re right, if I wear them more, I’ll get used to that. I mean I’m completely used to my regular glasses. Also, so good to know I have an oval face shape! Now that you say it, that does seem right proportionately! And googling the best frames for oval faces brings up rectangular frames so it seems spot on!
@@Livshaka It's understandable that when doing makeup videos you would need to take your glasses off and since most of your videos are in fact makeup videos explains why you're not seen wearing glasses nearly as often you apparently do wear them. Considering that you wear glasses on a daily basis most all the time i'm surprised that you haven't made any videos for glasses wearers. Many years ago I was dating a young woman that was a cosmetologist and manager of a Merle Norman's in my area. In talking one night she told me about a customer she had earlier that day that wasn't very happy with her makeover. The customer wore glasses full time and was looking for a way to have her eyes show up better through her glasses. My gf didn't wear glasses and neither did her 2 workers so they had no way of teaching themselves how to do makeovers for glasses wearers. After she told me that I happened to remember that we had a couple drawers full of glasses that patients ordered and paid a partial for and then never came to get them. After several months we would put them in the donation box for the Lion's Club. I went through the drawers and picked out about 10 pairs of glasses that I thought would be age appropriate for my gf and her coworkers. Most of them had rather weak prescriptions in them as well. I stopped by where my gf that evening and she was the only one working. I told her I gave her the bag with the glasses in it and told her that she could pick out several pairs for her and her co workers to use to practice doing makeovers for glasses wearers. My gf pulled mirror over and started trying on each pair. She found 3 pairs that she thought looked best on her and she decided they would be the glasses she wanted to work with getting a good glasses look wearing. She thanked me and said she was sure the other girls would be excited about the other glasses as well. That weekend I went to pickup my gf for diner and we were going to see a play after that. I was surprised when she opened the door to see her wearing a pair of the glasses she had picked. She wanted to know what I thought of her glasses look. I told her that I thought she looked really good wearing glasses and how nice her eyes looked through her glasses and I wasn't just saying that because she did look really good and the glasses she had chosen really did suite her very well. But I was even more surprised that she kept the glasses on and only said that she was hungry. She wore the glasses the rest of the night. She told me that she had been wearing the glasses at work trying various different different makeup looks for her eyes. She said the prescription of the glasses didn't really seem to bother her eyes at all for distance and only small print was harder to see wearing glasses. She wore them several more times on dates and at work. I think she actually liked wearing glasses. Remember this was well before wearing glasses had started becoming popular. I read something a while ago tat might surprise you. It was an article in a magazine and it talked about a study done in 2018 by a major university that did a study and they found that 74% of the population now either wears glasses or contacts. The same university did the same study back in 2008 and at that time the percentage was 62%. That's a huge increase in just 10 years time. So as you can see you're in the majority since you wear glasses and contacts. As an optician i'm really glad that you wear glasses 98% of the time and only wear contacts for certain things or special occasions. Glasses are so much better for your eyes, but contacts are fine for limited wear. have you ever wondered why you have to get yearly eye exams once you started wearing contacts, but were never required to do that when you only wore glasses? Very simple reason, it's so the doctor can check the health of your eyes. Wearing glasses you never have any risk of getting an eye infection or eye ulcers or even worse having a blood vessel grow into the side of your eye. I saw that happen and not something anyone wants to have happen. She was lucky that she didn't loose her vision in that eye. But she can never wear contacts again. She didn't seem to upset about that at all since I don't think she would have even if she could. At the time when they started ordering their glasses on line I didn't know anything about any of those sites except that the glasses were being made in China and if the prescriptions were wrong and resulted in any of my girls doing harm to their eyes by wearing inaccurate prescriptions in their glasses there would be no way of suing any of those on line sites. The only thing I found out with both Zeelool and Eye Buy Direct was that if you ordered several pairs of glasses from them at the same time they would ship them in one package but charge you $5.00 shipping for each pair of glasses. As you know Zenni doesn't do that. You are only charged a one time shipping charge per order. Now it's possible that the other sites have changed that by now. If you do decide to do a test between Zenni and Eye Buy Direct I would suggest that you first contact Eye Buy Direct and ask about multiple pairs of glasses shipping charges . Back in June when nearly everything was closed down if you had ordered glasses from a local shop just before they closed down you would have had to wait even longer to get your glasses. Then when they did finally start opening they would just hand you your glasses and not even adjust them for you because of the pandemic. Having 4 pairs of glasses in your current prescription is enough to provide you with options on which pair to wear each day. I have to assume the pair you lost you weren't wearing at the time or you would have noticed that things were quite blurry. So you must have had them with you as a backup pair and somehow misplaced them. It happens. I used to hear all sorts of ways people lost or broke their glasses. The way most often for glasses to be lost is in water. Oceans, lakes, rivers and creeks and usually drinking was involved as well. Another way that was getting more and more frequent to happen was at amusement parks and on many of the newer rides that often results in glasses flying off of faces such as roller coasters. Broken is most often caused by falling asleep with glasses on. But I have heard a number of cases where glasses somehow end up on the floor next to the bed and then someone gets up and steps on them. Gee I wonder how the glasses ended up on the floor? So at -3.00 / -4.50 you're in the moderate range for glasses. Glasses stronger than -7.00 are considered as being in the strong range. The Zenni recommendations I have found to be very accurate overall. But it really depends on the frame with a prescription in your range. Like I said if you plan on ordering any new glasses in the near future if you were to get any glasses, regular or sunglasses using a full plastic frame then I think you would be fie with only getting your lenses with the 1.57 thickness which is one of the free options. And i'm sure that your right that going from -4.00 to -4.50 was why they recommended the thinner lenses. Considering your prescription i'm sure that prescription sunglasses would be just fine using the 1.57 lens option. I'm quite sure that if you start wearing your rimless glasses after a short while you won't notice those things anymore. And like all of your glasses they look really nice on you and by not having a frame i'm sure they are extremely light weight. Please, if you have any questions for me about your eyes or glasses or even contacts feel free to ask me. I really enjoy answering questions. If we don't chat anymore I hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and stay safe.
Jim I appreciate you so much! Thanks for the openness and willingness to help! You know you really make a great point that I should be doing makeup videos for people with glasses like me. There really must be so many people like me who want their eye shadow to be visible and beautiful with their glasses on. It's something I'll have to think about. I work in medical imaging so I stare at Cat Scans all day and just can't seem to do that with contacts in, so perhaps that's a good thing! My dad is one of those people who wore contacts for decades and then was suddenly unable to do it ever again. That's odd that Eye Buy Direct charges you an equal additional charge for each pair. I might only try one pair with them to start though, so perhaps that won't matter. I'm going to take your advice and order some big 1.57 sunglasses on black friday at Zenni! Happy Thanksgiving Jim! Hope you have a wonderful, safe time! Its been a pleasure!
@@Livshaka If nothing else, doing makeup videos for glasses wearers should provide you with at least several videos on the subject because you may have several different ways of doing your makeup when you wear glasses. Interesting that you can't wear contacts when doing Cat Scans and I assume that might include X-rays as well? About a year ago a friend that I have known for a long while contacted me about me getting her glasses. She also works in the same field as you at the hospital closest to my house. She has worn glasses and contacts for years. She mainly was wearing contacts for a several years and her glasses were in much weaker prescription then she now needed. Her contact prescription was -9.00 something and when she picked out the glasses she wanted, from Zenni of course, she gave me her glasses prescription and it was -11.50 / -12.00 -.25. Needless to say I ordered her glasses with the 1.67 lens thickness. She said that she was having trouble working in the dark so much with wearing contacts and she wanted to start wearing glasses for work. She said that her eyesight had really gotten worse from working in that field and in the dark so much. Has your job done anything to worsen your eyesight or is it just that your eyes are more comfortable wearing glasses when doing your job? You would be surprised at how many people abuse the way they wear or take care of their contacts and then it gets bad enough that the doctor will refuse to allow them to wear contacts anymore. Based on how little you apparently wear contacts you should never have that same problem. The ones that have the greatest risk are the ones that wear contacts from early in the morning until late at night and 7 days a week. And then sometimes forget to take them out before going to bed and sleeping with them on. They are the ones that are doing permanent damage to their eyes. Something I meant to ask you early on and have forgot each time is when you order your glasses do you normally get the optional AR coating (anti-reflective) on your lenses? That coating is really great in reducing reflections as well as glare from your glasses. Zenni offers 3 different versions of that coating, sort of a good, better and best. The "good" is only $4.95 and honestly that's the version I usually always order for people unless they request one of the other versions. I have only had one person ask for the best version and it's only $14.95 but it looked like her glasses didn't have lenses in the frame it was so clear. As you may know that "good" version sells for anywhere from $45.00 to well over $100.00 at a local optical store. Even worse insurance companies won't pay for it because they consider it as being cosmetic. Of course an AR coating isn't necessary for sunglasses. So happy glasses shopping on Friday.
@@soundmanpt I actually made my purchase yesterday and I don't think I added AR! I'll have to see if I can add it now. You should have a youtube channel for optician and glasses stuff! You would do so well! I actually work in biomedical stuff so it's all on a computer staring at cat scans. I'd imagine you can wear contacts as an x-ray tech or CT operator. I just find I can't wear them while staring at cat scans since it's so straining! I did add Blue light blocking to my glasses. I'm curious what your thoughts are on that!
Nice video. I usually order the styles that you are wearing, but next time I'm stepping out of my comfort zone...Maybe I'll go for a cat-eye or something....
Take the crooked glasses in to an optical shop…LensCrafters, Walmart…Target) & get them adjusted. I’ve worn glasses since the 4th grade and I’ve learned that some people doing adjustments are far superior than others. They will adjust them free of charge for you. I gather up all of my glasses once a year, put them in a bag and get them all adjusted, hinges tightened etc. because they become loose with wear. It’s also important to treat your glasses with care, be gentle with them and ALWAYS store them in a protective case.
I love Zenni! I've been getting their frames for about 6 years now. They have a fantastic return policy and you can get a pair of glasses for less than $10! My first pair was over $300 from costco. Spend that at Zenni and you get a full on haul!!
Oh gosh $300 at Zenni that would be like...8 frames probably! At least with my prescription! Did you take advantage of the black friday sale? I recall trying to return frames one time and I think they wanted to charge me shipping...but I honestly can't recall details. How has your experience been with returns?
I'm buying a 3 pair half framed red cat eye as there similar to my 2019 2018 ones I loved and the bf to I have two others coming from zenni lol and a spring code to its up on the 17th
Great video! It was very informative. I ordered my 1st pair from them in June of last year (near sighted regular wear) & I'm still wearing them. I also just recently ordered prescription sunglasses & am waiting for them to arrive (they're on the way to the distribution center).
I just checked my e-mails and I have an e-mail from Eye Buy Direct and they are having a BOGO with 25% off as well on Friday. So if you were already considering ordering a pair of sunglasses why not get a free pair as well. The code to use is "Friday"
Bummer! The vast majority of the frames that I picked said they were not available in my prescription level :( Was worth a shot anyways! Hope you had a great thanksgiving!
@@Livshaka Interesting! I just went in and attempted a "fake" order using your prescription and the first glasses I chose was a semi-rimless frame which was $35.00. Very nice looking frame but probably a bit small for sunglasses. The only issue i had was that it wouldn't allow me to order that frame with the 1.57 free lens thickness. It chose the 1.61 lens thickness only for your glasses. I assume because of it being semi-rimless they must think the edge thickness would be too thick without an actual frame holding the lenses in place. I then found a frame called "Hideout" which is a full style larger red plastic frame that looked quite nice which is $20.00 and it accepted that in your prescription and was fine with using the 1.57 lens thickness and it didn't even charge extra for the sunglass tinting. and came up with a total cost of $20.00 for that pair in your prescription. If you don't mind, tell me some of the glasses you tried to order that it said wasn't available in your prescription. Also am I right that your full prescription is -3.00 / -4.50 SPH do you have any CYL that needs to be included? I want to see why it said that.
ah thanks Jim! My cylinder is -2.00 and -1.75. It seemed that the vast majority were unavailable in that prescription. Let's see...for example this was one of my favorites: www.eyebuydirect.com/sunglasses/frames/sevilla-tortoise-l-17227 and I really wanted to branch out and try these: www.eyebuydirect.com/sunglasses/frames/bless-gold-l-21294 I'm not too bothered. It stopped me spending more money! But it does seem odd. Would be nice if there was a way to eliminate frames that don't work with your prescription.
Ah bummer ya that seems pretty typical for them. I think they range anywhere from a week and a half to 2 weeks manufacturing...at least from what I've noticed. I bought my black friday glasses on November 25th and got the shipping notification on December 7th, so hopefully yours will be on their way shortly!!
@@Livshaka That happens when you start wearing glasses when you're 12 years old. Being an optician getting glasses at around the age of 12 seemed like when most got glasses for the first time. The reason is really very simple why. That's about the age when a girl tends to grow the most. That growth then also means that your eyes grow as well and that stretching results in "myopia" or as you know it "nearsightedness". You may or may not recall but when you 12 you were taller than most boys the same age as you.
@@soundmanpt oh I certainly remember that! I think I was the height I am now at 12 and I towered over all the boys! I always wish I had kept growing haha! I'm my mind I'm 6 ft tall! So Jim I'm so curious! As an optician, how do you feel about the prevalence of affordable glasses options online?
@@Livshaka Thank you for your reply. That's pretty normal at 12 for girls to be taller than boys. But it also results in the lengthening of the eyes which is why you needed to start wearing lasses when you did. You did nothing that caused you to need glasses except grow. I think being able to order your own glasses on line for such low prices is the best thing that has ever happened. It really has made wearing glasses so much more acceptable now for so many people, especially young girls. No girl wanted to be stuck having to wear the same pair of glasses everyday to school. But that was what they had to do because insurances would only pay for one pair of glasses a year and in some cases every other year. So a girl wanted a second pair it would cost her or her parents several hundred dollars for that pair and it might only be good for a year before her eyes changed she needed new glasses again. I'm not how many of those 14 pairs are in your current prescription but being able to change your looks simply by changing your glasses to make wearing glasses more enjoyable than if you only had one pair to wear all the time. Since I retired I have helped a number of young ladies out with getting them glasses. It may surprise you but hardly any workers in bars and restaurants even have health insurance. Even worse servers usually only make less than $3.00 an hour because they aren't covered by min wage laws. So they rely on tips for their income. I found that out by accident one day when I noticed my server was squinting badly when she was trying to read off what the days special was. When I asked her why she wasn't wearing her glasses she said that she didn't have glasses and she knew she needed them. Then she told me that she didn't have health insurance. I called my old store and arranged for her to get her eyes examined for $15.00 and then I helped her pick out glasses from the Zenni site. After she got her glasses I never saw her without glasses again and she told several others how I helped her get glasses and I was shocked at how many others had the same issue of not having insurance and were wearing glasses that needed updated.

Good luck! Hope you find a surprise that suits you super well!
I’ve spent almost $600.00 a pair at LensCrafters for glasses. Never again. What a rip off & they weren’t even designer glasses.
Absolute rip off! I can't believe we used to HAVE to pay so much just to be able to see. It's a medical necessity and we're trapped by it!
I'm buying a 3 pair half framed red cat eye as there similar to my 2019 2018 ones I loved and the bf to I have two others coming from zenni lol and a spring code to its up on the 17th
I am super tempted to get some new ones just because of the sale! It's such a good deal.
Great video! It was very informative. I ordered my 1st pair from them in June of last year (near sighted regular wear) & I'm still wearing them. I also just recently ordered prescription sunglasses & am waiting for them to arrive (they're on the way to the distribution center).
Thanks Neel, glad this was helpful! Hope you love your sunglasses! I actually picked up another pair of sunglasses from them after this video!
Glasses look good on you))
thanks, I'm kinda stuck with them!
@@Livshaka It fits nicely on your nose
Very Very Pretty..
I just checked my e-mails and I have an e-mail from Eye Buy Direct and they are having a BOGO with 25% off as well on Friday. So if you were already considering ordering a pair of sunglasses why not get a free pair as well. The code to use is "Friday"
Thanks so much Jim! I might do that!!!
Let's see...for example this was one of my favorites:
www.eyebuydirect.com/sunglasses/frames/sevilla-tortoise-l-17227
and I really wanted to branch out and try these:
www.eyebuydirect.com/sunglasses/frames/bless-gold-l-21294
I'm not too bothered. It stopped me spending more money!
But it does seem odd. Would be nice if there was a way to eliminate frames that don't work with your prescription.
I ordered a pair of glasses from Zenni 8 days ago and it shows that they still haven’t shipped yet. Very frustrating
@@Livshaka ahh okay. I’m hoping! Thank you
@@aarronconkright999 for sure! Fingers crossed!
14 PAIRS!! 😱
Over many many years hahah
Temple 😉
bahahah thank you! I hate brain farts!!!
