  • Is this the best Thrustmaster wheel ever made?
    This is our full review of the new Thrustmaster TS-XW Racer steering wheel. This is the strongest and highest performance wheel from Thrustmaster yet and it also includes Xbox One comparability as well. The wheel was made in partnership with Sparco and features a Sparco inspired P310 steering wheel. The combo set also comes with T3PA pedals and is ready to race out of the box.
    In this video we give the wheel combo a good look over and then cover the full installation of the wheel. We then move on to driving it and seeing how it really performs on track. And then we finishing things off with the good, the bot so good and the bottom line on this new wheel from Thrustmaster.

    16:15 That notchiness you are feeling is the notches on the belt. I feel it with my Thrustmaster TX too and I felt it with the FANATEC belt drive wheels I had too. The only way to do away with this is do what Fanatec done with the CSW and use a notch free belt drive system. The notched belt drive system is there to stop the belt from slipping.

    Thanks for taking the time and effort to do a comprehensive review, Shaun. As a newbie in the world of quasi-sim racing (l.e., an Xbox One guy who likes Forza 7 and Dirt 4), I found it very helpful when you carefully explained the reasons for your evaluations. Within the next couple of months I hope to get this wheel+pedals bundle, a TH8A shifter, and a Next Level Racing F1/GT cockpit. Thanks again for your guidance and suggestions in this video review!

    Bit late to the party but just looking at this as i'm thinking of getting a rim. In doubt between the openwheel or this one.
    Btw, if you'e playing rally while using the flappy pedals to shift. Don't put the handbrake on a button, put it on your clutch pedal that you're not using anyway while flapping. Chances are while pulling a handbrake turn your wheel will be moving quite a bit, as will the button. Just put on on the clutch pedal. Works much better.

    Just got this yesterday. Tried it for a couple of hours, and my first impressions coming from a TX is that is much stronger and smoother. Reactions of the car like over/under steer, are so much precise and closer to reality. And the wheel itself blew my mind. I had the Ferrari 599xx wheel, but this one is in another level. You can see and feel it is a real race car wheel and the overall quality is just amazing. The pedals, I installed the conic rubber mod (never tried it before) and I felt that breaking in cars without abs like the iRacing Ford GT, is now much more progressive and real car like. Very positive impressions until now.

      Marco Esteves Stop buying toy parts Marco!!! lol.... you know couldn't resist. JK.... Enjoy your setup, maybe get the CSP V3 to pair it with your wheel. You'll need a Basherboard CPX to make it work. That's what I had when I was using the TX Wheel. It worked fantastic. Well worth the money and you'll feel the difference in the brake. That Sparco wheel is badass!

    The notchy feeling is caused by the toothed belt. The belts in the TS wheelbase are very wide compared to those found in the TX or T300 and it's this extra length of the teeth that can be felt. I experimented with my base and found a set of narrower belts with the same spacing of the teeth, no more graininess! I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to run it with these belts however, this was a purely academic exercise and I replaced the standard belts. In use it is noticeable for the first few minutes and then I no longer noticed. It's a great wheelbase mine came with the F488 Challenge Edition wheel in Alcantara but as I prefer a round wheel I use mine with the leather GT 28 wheel. The FFB feels very strong and detailed compared to any of the other Thrustmaster wheelbases, and I'd put it's performance up there with the CSW from Fanatec.

    Nice to see TM gave yet another product for review. My experience with TM.
    TX base broke wihtin a year. Same goes for the t3pa-pro and the th8a-pro.
    The peals took 4 months to get repaired and they tried to blame the TX base. And that one was just 2 months out of garantee. Paid for transport because the ticket from postNL they gave did not work at PostNL and they wanted me to try another postoffice. Cant go to DPD or DHL with a ticket from PostNL.
    Got the pedals back saying they could not find the problem but to be sure they replaced all potentiometers. Problem is solved. But now the screw for the tear plate are worn so i cant use them in GT style anymore. One spring Gas or clutch how you want to see it gives half the resitance that the others give.
    Taking a look at how it is manufactured. Its rubbish. Not worth the money they ask for it.
    -TX base a new USB cable has 3 wires soldered instead of 2 as the original has.
    -Pedals new poteniometers.
    -Shifter fixed by me. The wire for sequential just broke because it was soldered bad.
    Had to repeat myself nummerous times because they where asking questions i already gave the answer to in previous mails.
    My conclusion. They rather give away a product for review than helping a paying customer. Really think about it before purchasing a TM product. I wish i waited a bit longer before buying.

    The Sparco-rim looks like something I'd actually put in the con side of things, the quality may be good but I find myself running my old F1 rim more and more over the 599 rim as it blocks less of my view. Real world development seems to share the same sentiment as more and more race cars use a GT/Formula style rim. While the TS-XW certainly looks cooler from afar, I'd pick the TS-PC over it if you're not going to race on the Xbox.
    Great review as usual Shaun, very thorough in a way that speaks to the enthusiast. Any chance there's been more news about the dash/rev lights Thrustmaster showed at E3 when this wheelbase was first revealed?

  • @tadman3d
    @tadman3d 4 года назад

    The notchiness is from the motor itself. The belts have gotten big and stiff enough that it is transmitting the motors cogging through to the wheel. You don’t feel it in the tx because the belts are super thin and stretchy so it hides the cogging. But the tx motor cogs too.

    Shaun I think they don't want in factory install the brake mod because when you use it you need to open the wheel control panel in Windows to calibrate the maximum pedal distance which it seems a PC is not able to remember.
    Also when using a TH8A shifter on a PC you need to use the cable with the USB end for the H-pattern mode. You can only use the other cable that plugs directly into the wheel base for the sequential mode.

      How is a 40 watt motor more powerful than a 65 watt motor? That defies electrical physics. If you set the two units at the same settings with the same size wheel, there is zero chance that the 40 watt is more powerful. It MAY have "better" force feedback, in that it may have a smoother power curve or something like that, but it is not more powerful. It would be like saying a 40 hp engine is more powerful than a 65 hp engine. It is a physical impossibility.

    • @AidanMillward
      @AidanMillward 7 лет назад

      SpatialDragon technically, if you bolt a turbo to the lower HP engine it will have more torque than the naturally aspirated one.

    • @SebastienBrunier

      I've owned a T500RS for more than 4 years, I've switched to the TS-PC Racer (I've kept the pedal set), and I cannot encourage you enough to do the same! It is night and day, forget about the T500RS notchiness it is really smoother, also NO DEAD ZONE because the brushless servo motor have an instantaneous power output whereas the T500RS brush motor is way more lazy. The amount of detail you get in the low forces effect is way beyond T500RS. Furthermore the slight notchiness Shaun is referring to will diminish after few weeks of use. The strength is comparable, but more details and instantaneous reaction for TS-PC Racer, but TS-PC Racer wins when it comes to marathon run no fading of FFB and during strong effects it never feels weaker.

    • @galliewokgaming4244
      @galliewokgaming4244 6 лет назад

      SpatialDragon
      The wattage doesn't determine power produced. The wattage is power consumed. The 40 watt motor is producing 6nM of torque while the 65 watt motor is producing slightly over 4nM.
      So your getting more power output at a lower consumption cost.

    Hi Shaun :) great in depth review bud, loved it 👌im wanting to get one for a Xbox x. Question..
    While playing tittle's such a Forza Motorsport or assetto corsa for example. While changing gears whith the paddle's.. Do you notice any lag between when the guy in the copit actually presses the paddle shift up or down? Compared to when you would actually press them?? If that makes sence to you.. 🤔😅 like any lag there, between the driver changing the gears with his hands and you doing it? Lol.

    • @AmirPomen

      I think in almost all game cockpit driver action were always lag..they move based on our action after shifting/steer/pulling handbrake in my opinion...
      If u watch my onboard dirt rally 2.0 action video at 1 point where im pulling handbrake for every milisecond through that corner, the game driver have his hand shuffling between reaching the steering and handbrake during that occasion 🤣🤣🤣 pretty funny i would say

    At this price point personally i think going OSW base with a very basic rim setup is the way to go. Pick up some TM pedals + TH8A shifter cheap on eBay.
    If people are willing to pay for a plastic product with this hefty price tag it makes sense to go balls out, sure it works out a few hundred on this price but it'll cover the user for a long long time in comparison to the TS-XW breaking down in the future, not forgetting the depth of detail gained is two fold.
    Did i sell this option as well as Shaun did? ha ha.

    I just purchased this exact setup. I really like it but for one issue. And I can't decide if it's just something the game is doing or if the wheel is faulty. When driving in Forza Horizon 5, it handles great for the first 20 mins and then during a hard right hand turn. the wheel loses it's center. It's like it slips to the right. So instead of center being at 9 and 3, it's more like 11 and 5. Which makes it more of a challenge to drive. Like I said, I'm not sure it's not something in the game. Unplugging the USB and reinserting fixes the problem when it resets. But it will happen again. I'm beginning to wonder if I got a bad wheel base.

    5:50 The one gripe I have with thrustmaster wheels is how far they stick out from the mounting surface. If they took off that bit on the bottom that sticks down and push forward the mounting holes towards the wheel rim it would make it far better for short ass people like me. I have a GT Omega Wheel Stand and setting it up to suit me so the wheel isn't too close to me is a pain.

      Sorry for you if you had a bad experience with them, but I got the set of pedals from my former T500RS bundle (exactly the same hardware) for more than 5 years, I put something like 40 000 km per year on them, the three last years I've used the conical brake mod on it, so additional stress, without a single issue... still super linear and smooth work of the pots (you can check it in the driver control panel) and just put once some grease on the pedals axis to get rid of a small squeal noise on the brake pedal... in five years time... not bad considering the price point of the set IMO.

      Depends. For modern F1 cars in Assetto Corsa you need more buttons to map all the functions.
      That being said, the P310 is smoother due to bigger size.

    The one thing that lets down that wheel and pedals combo is those pedals. Thrustmaster really need to get off their morals and make a decent set of pedals with a load cell brake. Even if they are the same pedal set with the load cell brake added. I find it hard to go to non load cell pedals to my Fanatec CSR Elite pedals. Either they do that or make Fanatec pedals compatible with their wheel base. I am using a basherboard CPX adapter to connect my pedals to my Thrustmaster TX.
    I wonder will Thrustmaster make those Sparco whels available seperately though. I would like the other sparco wheel for my sheel.

    I love your channel Shaun but you should speak up more honestly instead of being afraid of losing TM as a partner like ISRTV does. The wheel is not smooth and has a lot of gearing and cogging, at 700euro it is overpriced in comparison to the Fanatec CSL Elite which comes with rev lights a tuning menu and you could even get the load cell brake (METAL!!) without even paying 700euro! TM did not listen to the community at all and has again provided the T3PA pedals with their 'high end range'. Exactly the same pedals that come with the T300 so please don't call this a Pro level wheel since it has a plastic steering shaft and includes plastic pedals. Common Simpit don't let your audience pay for the Sparco branding or TM distribution costs, Fanatec just owns the mid range at the moment. Don't be fooled people! And all the best Shaun again i love your channel but speak up more please.

      I am not sponsored by Thrustmaster in any way. The cogging was mentioned and that does not change my opinion on the overall smoothness of the wheel. Yes its felt when one concentrates on it sitting in the pits, but did not effects my overall laptimes. I also hit them pretty hard for the pedals.

    Thrustmaster's wheels get that slight notchy feeling cause they use a toothed belt system that work like gesrs. Fanatec uses a ribbed belt system where the rib never leaves the groove.
    Thrustmaster's belt system has an advantage of Fanatec because you'll never experience belt slip with toothed belt.

    No PS4 compatibility should be a con also. Thrustmaster needs to start making one base that works with all platforms and put the compatibility part on the wheel rims themselves so Sony and Microsoft get their crap licensing fees and we don't have to unmount bases. This is ridiculous! Fanatec is finally got it worked out Thrustmaster needs to do the same!

    • @hook86
      @hook86 3 года назад +1

      @@markweatherall7437 Yea the Thrustmaster ecosystem is definitely more diverse than logitechs. You can snag a lot of different rims and some aftermarket upgrades, and the pedals are cross compatible. Thrustmaster even has an affordable Load Cell pedal option on the market now. I've since moved over to the Fanatec ecosystem (not cheap, but worth it to me) however I still have a Thrustmaster wheel I use from time to time with several rims. I raced with a Logitech for a couple years and while it held up well there is defintely a step up on force feedback quality between the two wheels, and I'm really big on having a real world sized rim... so Thrustmaster is definitely my recommendation but if you want to start with a used G920 I'm sure you won't go wrong.
