This song written by Tommy was inspired by Kansas when they toured with them. one of my most personal favorite songs because he's describing exactly how I feel ..

The "Pieces of Eight" and "The Grand Illusion" phase of Styx does indeed have a bit of that Kansas flavor, particularly Tommy Shaw's vocals that have that Steve Walsh kind of vibe/timbre at times. Great to see "Man of the Wilderness" getting more and more love on YT reaction channels, well deserved! "Queen of Spades" would be a great one to react to.

100% agree Tommy does have a similar voice. I saw Kansas open up for Styx in 1997. It was great concert.

Hey first time listeners do you guys. What a great reaction to a song that I grew up with. Styx opened for Kansas and the next day he wrote that song. I raise my glass you are really in tune

Thanks for the Kansas citation, that is pretty much true, per numerous reports, Shaw was inspired by Kansas. Styx was so good at prog, wish they had done more proggy stuff

    • @timothyharwood1941

I agree I wish Styx was more Prog. And Metal. Lol
Crash of the Crown is straight up the proggiest album they've ever released. Every track is insane.
It's a fantasy concept album with a powerful message about modern society true to Styx fashion.
It's a bit obtuse though. The album starts in the middle of the story and the album ends just before that with ending and beginning of the story back to back in the middle of the album.
So you have to listen to the entire album at least 2 and half times in row in order to to get the whole story in the right order and fully understand its message.
Which oddly enough also matches the ideas in the album.
If you haven't checked it out you should really give it a chance.

This song does sound very Kansas, reminded me of their song "On The Other Side"

Dave gave me my first jaw drop moment when he made the Kansas comment. I once saw in an interview with Tommy Shaw, that when Styx were opening for Kansas, he was heavily influenced by the writings of Kansas, and songs that lyrically had deeper meaning. This song, and the song "Fooling yourself (Angry young man) are directly from that influence.
Also, that musical section where they transition from the guitar solo, back into the original sound is even more interesting, because the music used to make that transition, is a piece of music from another song on the album - "The Grand Finale"

    My favorite Styx song.
Great guitar, great lyrics, and highly underrated Tommy Shaws powerful voice.
The extended version is better, especially at the end with Tommy on guitar.

This song was not a hit, but a fan favorite and has gotten some attention on YT reactions. Also, they play it more often in concert recently.
BTW, there is an extended version on "Styx Gold" that is re-mixed and goes farther beyond the original fade-out.
Good reaction(and on point with the song meanings), but you missed one cool thing - the very first sound on this track is the lighting of a match as you would to see in the dark or light a lamp or candle in the wilderness. The match is a small amount of light that is fleeting and could either go out in just a few seconds("still in the dark 'Cause I can't seem to find the light alone"), or light a lamp or fire/blaze to begin your journey to warmth and happiness("I'm Alive").
The song after this one on "The Grand Illusion" album is also a deep cut fan favorite, "CASTLE WALLS" (as I commented on your reaction to "Fooling Yourself") has a deep meaning for Dennis DeYoung.

So sad to see Dave is homeless and living outdoors now. I didn't know he would get defenestrated from Portlandia so quickly.
This song is a perfect blend of Kansas' influence and Styx's desire to produce Broadway showtunes. JD is doing a good job guiding Dave's music education, training his ear to hear influences from one band in another's songs. On the subject of influences, maybe doing something from Rush's Feedback would be fun. That's an album of cover tunes that pays tribute to their own influences from their youth. Mr. Soul by Buffalo Springfield (with a famous cover by Neil Young) has lyrics I would like some insight on.

Most everything has been said on which to do next.
I've seen them three times. Twice with the original lineup.
They were better with Dennis DeYoung though.
    Tommy sings this.
"I'm a lonely sailor lost at sea. Drifting with the tide. Never quite knowing why"
"Sometimes it makes no sense at all"
You could compare them to REO SPEEDWAGON before REO changed. their sound.
