    My theory for why it doesn't FEEL like previous years is because it's not really Valve doing much. 80-90% or more of what we get is from community in some way. Don't get me wrong, I love the community and how creative the community has gotten recently but Valve hasn't been reflecting that. To most, that's not anything new. It doesn't FEEL like much is happening even though there has been a LOT of stuff that has happened, like the player count just getting higher and higher.
    I'm not 100% sure of how to describe it but it feels like a school project and the 'team leader' is sick or just isn't doing their part. You can still get stuff done just as well as you could with their help but it just doesn't feel the same. We, as a community, are continuing to work and make great things but our 'leader' isn't. That's just my take though.

    From someone who's been playing since 2018, updates like this are bittersweet. After so many years of so little in terms of weapons/balancing/game tweaks, even seasonal content updates like these with great hats and interesting maps just feel like we're being drip-fed. Valve simply need to hype things up more. Remember when we used to get an update page for just 1 new map with 2 variants (mountain lab / mann manor)?
    Remember when Sniper vs Spy pages were revealed 1 day at a time for over a week?
    Modern updates have enough new and unique content to build an update page around, Valve just can't bother with it.

      Possibly community burnout? There was huge huge hype from #SaveTF2 and then the Summer Update, and afterwards we've been getting A LOT of new content, especially maps. Compared to the years immediately following Jungle Inferno where we were mostly just idling with what we had, the past six months or so could just be the community being fed too much too quickly and we can't digest it all. Especially when none of it is really much interesting to discuss like balance changes, it's just 'content'. I would honestly be happy with half as many maps and unusuals being added. Just my theory though.

      I'm of the opinion that we need more QoL and bug fixes, less new content. At what point does a game have too many unpopular maps? Too many similar cosmetics? It's that Summer blog post man. Everything was so promising for the future. Then boom this. Bots are still hanging around. OP/UP weapons will still be as is which is a problem. Newer maps are cool but most just feel unbalanced and some are just lazy reworks. Unusual effects are all the same looking and uninspired mess. I believe it was Tyler McVicker that confirmed the reason they didn't use community fixes is because TF2's spaghetti code is so bad, most of the fixes they received actually broke something else, and they didn't have time to figure out why. Which makes perfect sense, even if it's very disappointing. Think he also said Valve was looking to try the idea again, just with more direction and clarification to people making the fixes.

    Autopilot is a good way of describing TF2 the last couple years. I've been using "hollow" personally, but autopilot is good as well. You hit the nail on the head though with your concern about each seasonal update being "bigger" than the last - there are just too many maps. Even *before* we got into this cycle of seasonal autopilot people were complaining about the game having too many maps, and this bloat doesn't help. I think Uncle Dane put it best when he said that new maps and cosmetics and whatnot are fine, but they're not the interesting parts of the game, the balance changes are. They're what stir the pot in terms of player creativity. But, that said, I also don't really think anything (at least weapon wise) really *needs* drastic rebalancing? Maybe a handful, at absolute most, such as the Enforcer, and that's only to fix a bug with the piercing effect.
    Don't get me wrong, I'll absolutely take these style of updates over no updates at all, but at the same time, they're hard to get enthusiastic about.

  • @Lys22179
    @Lys22179 9 месяцев назад +22

    I think most people would agree with me here, as you said, I would give all the content in this update for a balance change. A real balance change. Like changing the BFB boost removed on hit from x -> y. I want to see a blog post. It could be just that and people would loose their minds. If it was even just a simple update like that. Imagine if they added a weapon. Imagination is exactly where it is though. I doubt that tf2 is ever going to get the source 2 treatment like CSGO. I doubt it will ever receive balance changes. It could happen, but it won't.

    • @shouygui4955
      @shouygui4955 9 месяцев назад

      it's pretty much set to happen, i thought that was the plan with source 2 from the start, and that Dota 2 went first because it was the easiest to actually do an engine swap on. I'm pretty impressed with CS2, they even kept the 128 tick grenade lineups, and the rest of the stuff is being ironed out. TF2 is definitely the most complicated game to upgrade to source 2, but it's also important to Valve's overall business model, so it's going to happen. Adding weapons right before that would be silly. I come from CS, and I'm checking out TF2 lately and getting into hats, and it's just obvious, I guess. Hold on to your hats. lol

    Finally! Somebody else saying how it seems Valve just seems to be trying to make these updates different by just adding more items/maps. It really feels like Valve is still trying to make updates look big buy just adding a lot of things from the workshop instead of, you know, making a big change to the game or doing something different.
    Also you do have to ask, how much would be considered too much? Because I feel at some point there's gonna be more Halloween/Christmas bloat in the game files than actual maps that we all can play year round.
    I feel that if Valve made something like a Spring Cleaning update that was mostly fixes like Team Comtress to the game + balance changes and only added a couple maps/items (hell they can remove a few bad maps), i would consider it more of an "update-sized" major update than the holiday updates we've been seeing.

    I think the reason they don't add many community fixes is because when you're changing the code, each fix has a higher chance of breaking something else because not all the code is compatible and many write over the same spots.

    @thespringlock1794 9 месяцев назад +5

    since the whole “they can’t add the community fixes cuz they’re all based on old unusable code” thing was basically debunked by the ones that were added (or it was at least nullified for a majority of the submissions), that just seems real pathetic on Valve’s part
    i just find it funny that, with the whole VSH thing, they really stuck truer to “who knows what else?!” than the clarification edit.

    Started playing in 2020 just after the bots became rampant but before major content creators were doing their whole "TF2 Is In Trouble" videos. I only have this metaphorical painting on a wall in a dimly lit room that reads "TF2's Glory Days" and seeing that era of tf2 get so much attention and praise makes me regret never getting to experience the game sooner. These past 3 years have been some of the most fun I've had with a free game I needed to pay 5 bucks for, and this new content looks incredible. I can compare my first ever match of tf2 to the first time loading into Crasher during the Scream Fortress event. That feeling of wonder and "what the hell is going on, this is awesome".
    I hope this game can at least get a spring cleaning update, because it's starting to become increasingly more obvious that Valve will just give a heartfelt "Thank You" blog post before shutting the servers down. We didn't even get the og voices for the official Saxton mode so I doubt we'll be seeing a true revival to the glory days.

    I'll be honest, the community is probably the thing that has been the most tiring thing with TF2 this past year, all the negativity and vitriol has just become a common trend, I'd likely love future updates where Valve can find a good balance, but the hatred towards the workshop creators and everything, it's just tiring and I'm considering just quitting TF2 man, there is too many maps, this and that, it just feels like positivity is so few and far between, people wonder why people have such a bad perception of TF2 youtubers, players, etc., but they can never look back at the division and everything they cause through all the tantrums, the state they cause the game to be in, cherry picking things, always looking at the worst. I love the game, the characters, everything, except for the current community, never wondering why things happen, always pointing fingers. It sucks, even I'm not exempt from pointing fingers, because I point them at those that spread negativity, because of all that it does, which is hardly much good in my eyes. It is saddening.

What I want and I am sure everyone else does is that we want to GET RID OF THE BOTS! That is what will make me go berzerk over new content. I started playing right after the unusual crate bug, the bot invasion, and free2plays like me no longer being able to use chat, along with the many mediocre maps for christmas and halloween we got. From that perspective, anything that isn't a game crashing bug will feel good in comparison.
    But at the same time, having seen tf2 content since long before i started playing, i've lost any excitement for these updates. I mostly play MvM or community gamemodes. Last time i played in the casual servers was exclusively playing the zombie gamemode.

    I feel the same way tbh. Getting too many maps makes them feel less special in a way, especially when the game really needs fixes and balancing would be way more impactful than a new map. Idk man I haven't even played the new update yet besides opening my stocking and I'm just not really feeling up to it.

They’re really fun maps, and I’d hate to see them go! They’re not too Christmas-y, so it could work! We do need more snowy maps in the permanent pool anyway, so this could do the trick.

    4:49 STIFF??? They are literally waving their arms around just to show how skilled the animator is. Compare these taunts to ones made by valve you can see diffrent in ammount of effort in making the animation because they were ment to be simple animation that everyone easly recognises.

      I feel like tf2 trailer animation quality shouldnt be same as taunts. crying mercs you can see that every body rig was moved to make it more over-dramatic. Not counting how long a taunt really should be when its like 10 seconds of mercs crying or drinking before they throw their cups or mugs to be playable again. I bet you can use sandman kill taunt and kill someone when they use that taunt due to ammount of animation was putted in to show how animators are skilled.

    New maps are nice, but I have some questions with them.
    Why Krampus, despite being so big, can clip through short bridges?
    When I played Haarp first time many players were comfused and couldn't find control points for briefcases. Quick fix mefic is OP here as he can deliver intelligence alone while quickle heal themselves.
    I have weird feeling Carrier is badly balanced for attackers. In first phase giant robot has no crits at all, making him rather weak. Overall he can't be healed by mediguns (but by crossbow they can), Heavy can't use sandwich to heal himself, but Demo and Sold can use Half Zatoichi to heal themselves. They are very vulnerable to knockback and can be juggled easily by Loose Cannon Demos.
    Also why they have very deepened human voices instead of robot voices?

    Its just... tf2 is an old game, according to steam I only started to play tf2 in august 2020. 3 years after the last major update at the time.
    So I can't really say if the update "feels different"
    But it certainly has A feel. Like a community content dump. A loosely packed, carelessly picked selection of items that was just dropped into the game on a set date. Its cheap, expected, not surprising, not genuine, and despite the fact that everyone knows what we wanted for an update (fix the game already) ITS NOT EVEN THE CORRECT THING!

  • @ntheawesome1
    @ntheawesome1 9 месяцев назад

    I felt like the missing feeling from these updates are Valve not doing much about these updates. I'm glad that the community, even the official VAs, had to push them to do something about it. I'm guessing that's why they gave the coding of the Vscript to the community in the first place, before they selecting maps for their updates.
    Plus them not doing much on their end for each update, and not saying "HEY EVERYONE. WE UPDATED THE GAME!!!". It's more of "Hey. Go update your game or what not"

  • @c101vp

    I definitely agree that tf2 needs polishing up more than new maps. I started playing in 2021 and there was a LOT of maps to learn, and weapons to try out. So many that, even 2 and a half years after I started playing, I still haven't learned all of the map layouts.TF2 has had 16 years of maps, weapons, and cosmetics, and I really feel like it doesn't need more content (aside from maybe an alternative heavy playstyle, idk). I've been saying that for a while. I've also been saying for a while (since CS2 was revealed) that Valve probably stopped working on TF2 because they needed everyone to work on Source 2 (first with Half-Life: Alyx and now CS2), and, that once CS2 was finished, we might see more care for TF2. Just speculation.

    I've been playing ever since 2018. I wasn't around for TF2's "Glory Days". Although I wish I was, I can see where adding zombie infection, prop hunt, and VSH, while nice, ultimately isn't what we are looking for. When I play TF2 I almost instinctively play casual, which is my go to way to play TF2. New maps and modes are nice and all but, I just want the bot problem to be gone. This is the only FPS game that has kept my interest for more than 2 years, and it doesn't even receive massive yearly updates, and honestly, I don't care. The dream update for this game would be removing the bots and maybe some balance changes for the weaker weapons, and classes of the game. Adding filler content to a game with major issues is like putting a band-aid on top of a festering wound. Like, its nice, but it wont prevent disease. I've gotten to the point where I won't stop playing the game no matter what, and I'm along for the ride. The ride may be filled with developer neglect, bots, poorly made cosmetics, and a lack of updates, but I'm here for it. I love this game and will never stop playing it, and I hope at some point the game gets the hotfix everyone in the TF2 community has been dreaming of.

    imo the summer update still the best update we got in term of community bloat updates. only like two bad maps and one bad cosmetic set. great warpaints collection other than two bad one.
    the summer update: 7/10
    halloween update : 4/10
    Smissmas : 5.5/10
    i personally think we should stop adding cosmetics in both of the holiday updates and only 2-3 maps for each. and only get general themed cosmetics warpaints and maps for tf2 in non holiday update. keep summer update. add a new update in middle of the year (spring) that also tf2 general themed (around May and April or even push it to June) so in summary, 2 updates that fit tf2 and other two holiday updates that just add maps.

    Tf2 definitely needs a bit of vertical expansion to shake up the game. New weapons and maybe some new MVM content/tweaks would go a decent way to refreshing up the game. By focusing exclusively on “horizontal” content (new maps and cosmetics), there’s not really much different about the game than what there was a year ago.

    i started playing like 3 days before blue moon. all i want is an update in the vein of something like gun mettle. artwork, an update page, multiple days building hype before it dropped, and most importantly new items and balance changes. i remember watching old videos of people reacting to updates and thinking "man, can't wait for my first one. who knows what they're gonna add next?". that day never came. 5 stages hit me like a truck and now my obsessive phase has passed me by. i still love the game, but i'm not playing it every single day like i used to.

    I've started playing in 2012 and I while I like the "autopilot", I wish they'd keep it smaller. It's just too many maps to really enjoy, if they keep this up we'll just get a huge load of "oh, what was this one again?" over the years. I've barely even played Scream Fortress this year and usually I spent the whole night just getting every contract done.

    I started playing TF2 in 2014, after the Expiration Date realsesed. Like most people, I wish Valve would stop using the workshop as a crutch and put in work themselfs to actually fixing the game, but I that doubt that will ever happen at this point. The thing I miss the most though, are the Saxxy Awards! What happened to them? Is really that hard to do an annual event? Also if Valve plans on treating summer like another holiday event, could they atleast make them have differnet themes? Like a diet version of real updates? There is no effort needed the make a post at the start of the year that says "This years summer update will be X themed, start working". It would help differentiate each update insteed of them blending together like how Smissmas and Halloween have been.
