Goddam, how Herbie commands the pianoforte and the band - I mean, this title cut from Miles' 'Sorceror', the earliest of the four records of the 'holy trinity' must have been the sort of tune that made Miles think 'muthafucka' and hire him... and I'm sure Herbie's incredible virtuosity and dominating harmonic concept (dig those DARK sounds) eventually led Miles to replace him ... that sound was Herbie's ! .. Herbie is one of the few players, like 'trane, that left Miles' groups on equal terms ... Word for Roy and Michael revelling in Herbie's post-bop genius and nailing the awkward head and form like it was '65 again .. Great post thanks !

Herbie's music is wild yet deliberate; adventurous yet contained; effusive yet controlled. Above all, he fully expresses his personhood through his music and that special quality is something which has and always will be exclusive to the greatest artists. I'll miss him so intensely when he departs us; I would not be the kind of person I am now without his music.

Radical restructuring of 'Sorcerer' by Herbie Hancock...
which is to be expected since he's been playing it for decades...

It seems like Roy was really peaking during this period before the decline that followed over the years- lucid with chops intact and unmatched.
