    This was a way of using up buttered bread, a bit dry. Or stale bread, buttered. Sugar and mixed fruit sprinkled over, make a custard with egg and warmed milk. Pour over and leave to stand for about half an hour, then bake until golden and crusts are crispy. This was a recipe to avoid anything wasted years ago, when folk had hard times. Same as Bread Pudding.
    You can use brown or wholemeal bread with marmalade, this is Osborne Pudding. Try good quality Lemon Curd with lemon zest sprinkled, spread curd thickly then you don't need much sugar at all. You can change all the ingredients to suit yourself. I only use grated nutmeg. This looks very good! XXX

    Yes, I'm Canadian and have been making this for 30 plus years!
    Was my mom's recipe that I changed a bit by adding dried fruits, different jams like strawberry, raspberry or orange marmalade, and different liquids, such as Bailey's Irish Cream, spiced rum, or just plain old cream.
    And changed the plain bread to pannetone or fruit bread.
    My husband and Mom loved them all! 😋

  • @lil-al
    @lil-al 2 года назад +4

    I made this today! I didn't have raisins so I put homemade blueberry jam on the slices, and I used some old (not mouldy!!) bread rolls that needed eating.
    It's sitting in the fridge uncooked now, until dinner time when I'll stick it in the oven. Can't wait to try it!

    This might be a stupid question, but wouldn't it be easier to butter the bread before cutting it in half

    • @HowToBloke
      @HowToBloke  Год назад +3

      Not a stupid question at all. If the butter is soft (mine wasn't) spread the whole slice and then cut it. If the butter is cold (mine wuz) spread the butter onto smaller pieces of bread for better handling. If I'd tried spreading that cold butter on a whole slice, the bread would have broken-up in the middle making it difficult to cut into triangles and it would have looked not so good. Thanks for watching @HowToBloke 👍

    Interesting that the chef uses the term ‘raisin’ for what are actually sultanas. Raisins have a completely different flavour from sultanas.

    • @HowToBloke
      @HowToBloke  Год назад +2

      True. I used a French word for raisin without further clarification as to exactly what type of raisin I was actually on about. For example; “raisin sec blanc” would mean sultanas. So to clarify, in this recipe I would use both raisins and sultanas but not currants. Thanks for watching #HowToBloke 👍

    I like the simplicity of this! I looked at Gordon Ramsay utube B&B pudding but there was too much unnecessary fancy stuff like putting Baileys in it! No doubt that would would also increase the calories 😉. I prefer simple to making things complicated 😅. A simple Bread & Butter should be simple and easy, particularly in this hi tech world where a lot things are so complicated and stressful. Keep up your easy, simple cooking. It's what we need in this stressful, fast paced world. You seemed more relaxed than Gordon Ramsay as well. That makes a difference too in this stressful world, where many people are rushing around against the clock and it shows in their manner of rushed fast paced, stressful speaking manner, like they have a train to catch! 😊 👍
