Awesome video, some good history! The Odyssey Gyro was, and still is, so vastly superior to the Rotor that I've always used them and never looked back. Stem height and flex are also a factor when using the Rotor. Shadow BMX currently makes a gyro variant with precision bearings. I wish Hutch would reissue the 2-n-1 stem lock that clamps the fork to the stem to virtually eliminate stem flex.
Thanks so much for chiming in and sharing your thoughts! That’s a good point about the rotor requiring the stem being raised higher for it, and adding flex. More reasons why the gyro took over. Yeah, it would be cool if Hutch reissued the stem lock.
i had a love hate relationship with rotors until the gyro came along and i never looked back. But i 100% agree on the trickstar..it needs an acs rotor .. It was the ultimate bike of that generation.
I had the Rotor on all my bikes, starting with my 1986 Schwinn Predator Free Form EX. I never had issues with braking power and I was a heavy kid, though I was fastidious about brake maintenance. The Gen3 came out at the time people were going Gyro and moat people would just get the Pro Rotor that didn't want to do that. I have an unrestored 3, several 1-2, and a couple of Pros.
Great vid thank you 😊 just got a acs pro, but I forgot that all those other extra part are needed to install the dam thing 🤣 thank goodness your video is here
I wasnʻt a big freestyle guy, I was more of a racer so while I dabbled in some flatland freestyle stuff, I never modded my bike with stuff like this because it was not ideal for racing. I was always intrigued by rotors like this but just never had a chance to use one. This looks perfect for your Hutch! Great idea to use the razor blade to hold the tiny sticker in place. Thanks for sharing how this restoration works! Good luck on getting that stem!
I wasn’t much of either a racer or a freestyler, but more of a neighborhood kid that absolutely LIVED on a bike. We had makeshift races, dirt trails, and did our best to emulate the freestyle tricks we saw in the magazines. But we definitely leaned more towards the freestyle bike scene than the race one, since you didn’t need to travel to a race track to emulate those guys. Great nostalgia for 80s BMX either way. Can’t wait to get this rotor on the Hutch! As always, thanks for watching and the encouraging feedback 👊
Therapeutic to watch bike videos on 80s history and parts. I hope you get that stem very soon, ill keep an eye out too. Great video! The pro rotor is alot harder to open so i left mines closed since it was nos and got it polished an then i applied dry white lighting chain grease that stays lubed and its been a year and still works super smooth. That white lighting is good for the hinges of the spintech stems too. 👍
Loving your channel, brings back the best memories of my childhood! Please make more videos like this, such info about the ACS Rotors is priceless, would really appreciate this kind of content about 80s BMXes and skateboards!
Love the video. Not only do I find it therapeutic to restore my old Bikes I find it therapeutic to watch and hear about other people restoring their bikes. Thanks for letting us on your journey!
That was an absolutely awesome video. I believe I put the rotor on my first Diamonback, and I think I put the gyro on the hot streak. So meticulous. I only have one 26-inch ride now and have no need for the rotor. However, I am considering purchasing one just to refurbish it and put it on the coffee table. Excellent video and idea for video. Also, you killed it with the reproduction stickers.
Thanks so much for the feedback! 👊 I have a Gyro on my 26” GT Performer. I also don’t need it on there, but I wanted it for aesthetic reasons. Good idea for a rotor as a coffee table item. I’ve had this one sitting on my desk for the last week and found it to be a good fidget spinner too. 🤣
One other cable you can use is the Odyssey SlicKable. Measure it out and cut properly, you can use both ends of it and the other knarp drops right into the Rotor hole. Ive used the Porkchop kit as well because I wanted oink housing
Generally the problems i heard about poor braking came from people running the upper cable bracket versus a stem with the stop integrated. We used to call them flex plates because they flexed and robbed power. General rule was the more exposed cable you had, the worse it worked.
The non Pro Rotors could be used on any stem but sometimes the shaft was slightly skinnier and would give more of a mushy feel. Skyway did a similar thing with the Spinmaster re the sleeve for more uniform performance.
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood I am old enough to remember it first coming out. I wanted it right away but when I saw the 86 Schwinn that was coming out I chose to save up for that and it came with a Rotor
Thank you for the great video! Is there anyway that you could make a video on how to install the acs rotor? Also what headset and stem is needed , how to choose one that will work with the rotor? Thanks!
Hi! Here is link to the assembly instructions. drive.google.com/file/d/1udT13kWnHVb2fjbXwIjPVf0uTKrf7jYE/view?usp=sharing A few thoughts on your questions: Yes, I plan to make a video installing this one when Hutch releases the freestyle stem that they’ve been promising for months now. Tioga bear trap 2 headset is a classic choice. www.porkchopbmx.com/tioga-beartrap-2-bmx-bicycle-headset-1-threaded-w.html but you’ll need to swap out the top bearing cup for one that that has an integrated cable housing stop. I’m not sure if there any reproductions being made, but I got an ACS branded one on eBay. For the stem, it needs to be long enough to support the travel distance of the rotor, check the pdf above for exact dimensions. Then you need to either add a cable housing stop to the stem nut like this, www.porkchopbmx.com/porkchop-bmx-rotor-stem-bolt-upper-cable-stop-adju.html Or you’ll need a stem that has a housing stop built in like the Hutch ones, I think you can still find repop Haro group one stems that have the hole for the cable stop built in too.
Thanks! There is a piece of plastic that reduces friction between the halves. I don’t think it’s totally necessary, but I applied a thin film of white lithium grease to each side of the plastic on mine.
I placed a thin layer on each side of the plastic disc that separates the halves of the rotor body, as well as under the metal washer that keeps the halves from separating. I did this at the time of final assembly.
Whoops!! Sorry about that. I just added it to the description, but here's the link: drive.google.com/file/d/1udT13kWnHVb2fjbXwIjPVf0uTKrf7jYE/view?usp=sharing
Yeah, it would be an interesting project to research how the Rotor was dethroned by the Gyro. My understanding is that ultimately, the gyro had more stopping power and less friction by distributing the pulling force across both sides of the spinning mechanism. But there are people who say the Pro Rotors are just as good. It would also be fun to do a real world comparison video. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Every time I come across your videos it makes me fall in love with my bikes all over again.
I love this!!! Thanks so much. Bikes are such a great hobby ❤️👊

Correct the Gyro was cheaper than the Rotor to purchase, though long term the special cable would make up the cost difference
