Hey Vin and Sori! Thanks for covering this song and to Bryan for suggesting it. Great dialogue too! I wrote Ark of Suffering back in 1990 and here we are 31 years later - and it's still having a profound impact on people, as hearing and seeing cruelty inflicted on animals always does. (unless you're a heartless psychopath). Thanks to everyone for the great comments too! Lots more animal related vids on our channel, plus just good ole' thrash... All the best, Ted (drummer)

This came out when I was in high school. It had a huge influence on how I expanded my thinking out of the pre-existing context I received in Sunday school and started to change and analyze scripture from its own context. Tourniquet and Vengeance/Vengeance Rising really got me to start to research theology (had to look up the meaning of expiation and propitiation due to Vengeance). It's odd to say, but they both played a role in my eventual Ph.D. in Theology and role as president of a seminary.

Finally! You're getting into their classics. This song is amazing. Tourniquet, to me, is the Megadeth of Christian metal. When I was starting my journey into the Christian Metal scene and finding the music that speaks to me, these guys and Living Sacrifice were my jam. I got the extreme music, plus the theological lyrics. I still jam out to them today, over 20 years later.
One thing people don't think about is those who abuse and harm animals on purpose usually turn out to be sociopaths or have some other serious mental issue. Lots of serial killers started out with animal abuse.
Another good song to listen to is The Skeezix Dilemma. It's about child abuse.

We worked at the distribution center and the coolest part was all walks of life worked there and had different music tastes but we were in the music industry so yeah. They periodically would give us videos to take home and watch and we would rate them for what ever genre of music you were in to and tourniquet was on one of the videos ark of suffering. Afterward we just looked at each other and was like no way! We had to watch it again. Christian! That kicked ass! Pshhh stryper. We gave it very high rating and told all our friends.

The story you are thinking of is about Balaam and he was asked by the king of Moab to curse Israel. He knew this was not the right thing to do, but the king offered Balaam some riches so he agreed to come to the king and curse Israel. But God intervened with the Avenging angel. When Balaam’s eyes were opened and he saw the angel, he was set to go home, but God made Balaam go to the king. Balaam did, however, tell the king that he could only curse Israel if God let him (He had learned his lesson.). So they went to a hill or mountain overlooking a battle between Moab and Israel, and the king asked Balaam to curse the armies of Israel. Balaam prayed to God about it, but blessed the armies of Israel, instead as that is what God told him to do.

Dave Mustaine of Megadeth wrote a song about the type of hunting you talked about called Countdown to Extinction. One of the things he lists in that song he calls a Pseudo-safari, pointing out that it isn’t even real hunting. Not only do these folks hunt beautiful and endangered animals who have done nothing to them and posed no threat, they don’t even do it sportingly. He uses the lyrics killed a few feet from their cages, point blank, you’re so courageous. In other words, he points out that these,”hunters”, don’t even really pit themselves.against these animals. The animal in question has been caged and is released with a brief head start. There are also several helpers, so this,”sportsman,” doesn’t even do this one on one. So, first off, many of these animals are endangered and secondly, it isn’t really a proper hunt. It is even less sporting than a fox hunt. That being said, the song deals with how we, as man, are not being good stewards of the animals God has entrusted to us, as many of the things we do are leading to the extinction of many creatures from this earth. So, I would suggest you listen to. Countdown to Extinction. Actually the whole cd is killer ( You may know Symphony of Destruction from it, although I like Countdown better.).

That Last Resort riff was jacked from Iron Maiden’s Infinite Dreams (1988)

You are actually talking about a goat, not a sheep, that the people laid their hands upon. That is where the term Scapegoat comes from.

Finally! Someone who has said to 'offer the word of God and not to force it'. That's what was intended and that's the way it should be. Too many times I've heard and seen people forcing their beliefs on to others and it doesn't work that way at all.

Aw yeah. Much better. That last song isn't bad, but not a great introduction to the band. Mmmmm. Riffs.
Wait until you do Psycho Surgery or A Dog's Breakfast. I'm a friggin Satanist and sweet God and baby Jesus I still LOVE that album. Vin. The riffs. Seriously.

I thought of Papa Roach too at that breakdown. I’ve heard many older songs where i thought, so this is where Papa Roach stole this. I hate that band..so overrated and boring. I also hate zoos for the same reason Sori was giving about brids in cages. Those animals always look so depressed.

We have a duty as spiritual beings to compassionately love sentient beings. They're still god experiencing himself as a state of consciousness perspective and life force. Until the angels fell we were in harmony and nothing was carnivorous. It's true and we're soon going to return to heaven this way. As satan will be utterly destroyed

Tourniquet's Antiseptic Bloodbath (2012) makes a clever connection between taking the sacrifice of Christ for granted but not wanting to see how torturous and bloody it really was, and taking what animals bring to us (food, clothing, makeup, entertainment etc) but not wanting to see how torturous and bloody it really is for the animals. Tourniquet's Ted Kirkpatrick also made a half solo and half Tourniquet album with only animal welfare themed songs called Onward to Freedom (2014).
