It's so great that Truman Capote narrates this. He kept a tin of his Cousin Sook's gingerbread cookies with him throughout his life. There are many moments here where Geraldine Page's use of her face reminds me of Giulietta Masina in Fellini's La Strada: innocent, clownish, but heartbreakingly sincere and full of feeling. Beautiful work.
I'm not crying; you're crying! Geraldine Page, what a gift to acting! And the boy cast for the role of Buddy was a perfect choice. Thank you for uploading this, Mickey Wallis!
Every Christmas we would get in the mail Fruit Cakes made by Great Aunt Amy and Aunt Anne. I keep telling myself to get their recipes maybe I'll do it this year. I love this amazing Christmas Story.
OK , THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO EXPRESS THE BEAUTY OF THIS PRODUCTION OTHER THAN TO SAY , THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST AND MOST TOUCHING AND MOST BRILLIANT AND MOST GRACEFUL WORKS OF ART IN THE HISTORY OF CIVILIZATION ! DEAR GOD IT'S RADIANT ! MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄 to whoever is responsible for posting this treasure , thank you ! GOD BLESS YOU IN EVERY GOOD WAY - ALL HAPPINESS FOREVER !
Thank you for posting this, my favorite Christmas movie. It's hard to describe the elegant, almost bleak, spare, exquisite humanity and beauty captured here, largely due to Mr. Capote's gift of description and dialogue. Of course, Geraldine Page is a wonder at carrying and conveying Sook's special, unique quirkiness and boundless heart. What Mr. Capote also carries off is the tangible pathos of life without being cloying or maudlin.
Sad. Can’t hardly get anyone to watch it. Sad. No one wants to watch an old movie anymore, the lessons learned here are priceless.... the beauty and heartbreak.... Truman’s real story about his upbringing!!!
I have a really good transfer from VHS to DVD but I have misplaced it somewhere. My Father grew up down the road from Truman and Miss Nell Harper Lee is a family friend.... I grew up hearing the Bermuda Al dialect and Miss Page spoke it with perfection, and to see her in this role was like going home. Shout out to those passed Day Day, and Aunt Edna.and Daddy( Lowell) and those living ;Aunt Hilda, Uncle Tom and All the story tellers on the porch. God Bless you for giving us a 'forever" place for this incredible art. Thank You!
I have been in love with this movie since the first time I saw on PBS in the 70s. I don't remember the exact year, but my sister and I both watched it and have never forgotten it. They showed it for a few years then stopped and I've never seen again except here. I wish they would show it again, because it's truly a lost treasure. I can't watch it without tears in my eyes every minute... Buddy...Queenie...Sookie... now Truman all gone. Thank you. ❤
By FAR, my favorite Christmas movie. My father introduced me to this movie when I was a teenager, and, since then, I make it a tradition to watch, every year.
this show always reminds me of a very dear friend, who in a lot of ways was just like her. I do miss her, she has been gone 40 years, but sometimes it feels like yesterday
Absolutely LOVE this film. My vcr broke down and thanks to you tube I didn't have to miss it. What a wonderful story and a wonderful recollection. Three cheers for Mr. Ha Ha.
Truman Capote's, A Christmas Story (colorized) with Geraldine Page and Donnie Melvin. Narrated by Truman Capote. Wonderful classic. Thank you for sharing this on YT.🎄
I first saw this movie back in 2010, in the beloved company of my mama Yaya. We were both touched so, much. Especially since she was a child of the depression years. It hit home. We often talked about this movie. So, simple yet so, true to the heart. I love this movie and it makes me cry to remember a quality time with my mom, pbs tv, and a Truman Capote story.
Oh wow this wonderful.. I remember seeing this is the 60's when I was a kid.. It was in black and white... Can't get better than the great Geraldine Page.. Greatest actress ever.. Thank you zigfried64...
A year or two back , I watched the version with Patty Duke . I wasn't even aware of the original version with Geraldine Page ... until I scrolled to this film and love it . The only scene that made me made me mad the most - Sook's fault finding and manipulating sisters . I'm glad Buddy loves Sook , the most ❤️ 💕 💓 💖 💗.
Love this, and Ive never seen or heard of it before. So glad I found it and thank you so much for sharing. What a great story and absolutely love Geraldine Page!!
I've always loved this movie the Christmas Memory. It's the first time that I have seen Truman Capote's story of his younger boyhood years, played with the amazing actress Geraldine Page. I've only seen this wonderful Christmas Movie Played with Patty Duke, Jeffrey DeMunn, other actors and the young boy than Eric Lloyd as Buddy. Which also Plays in the Christmas Movies, Santa the first , 2 and 3rd with Tim Allan. As A boy, Buddy whose parents have split and whose mother is an actress in New York, has been dumped in the south at the small town home of some older cousins all of whom are unmarried. Buddy brings life to the house and develops a close friendship with one of the older cousins Sook played by the talented Patty Duke. in the version the older cousins get Buddy Clothes to send him off to Military school for young boys, up setting Sook. This version filmed in 1967 is a much shorter version, it was necessary to slow down the audio track of his voice in order to lower his intonations. No computers to do it than! But, for my money Patty Duke version succeeds on all levels in bringing a superior work to the screen on a television budget. After seeing both versions I think that they have both won awards in my heart of a wonderful Christmas memories of the young Truman Capote. MERRY CHRISTMAS EARLY on a wonderful story ever filmed.
I love this show so very much! I prefer the original Black & White version, but this is nice. I wish they would clean up the film and sound, and re-release this on Blu-ray/DVD again. Thanks for sharing this here for us to enjoy!
When Mr Haha showed up from inside his home, he scared the hell out of me! And I had read the short story before, so i knew what happened with the whiskey... but still. Good cinematography for sure.
there's lots of praise in the comments, which is well deserved, however i think some of the scenes seemed odd since I've read the story before watching this. The haha jones part seemed very rushed, she didn't seem scared, he didn't laugh or show any signs of reason why he would make a trade with her. To me its much better executed in the story. The parts with the relatives is very awkward when they first show up. There is no beat between when they see her and when they start scolding they just come straight in already yelling like they know whats going on. We should see their surprise and reaction to the whisky i feel like that would have made more sense. I guess these are the artistic liberties the director took though and im sure they also have their reasons but to me it just made these scenes seem very awkward.
I love this original version.Geraldine page is excellent as always.the only odd thing is they talk of buying eggs from the store, when they also mention having hens on their property
+Kerry Kennedy I am directing you to go to Amazon.com . I have found many great old movies here. It is safe and delivery is very quick. Hope you find it. Last night I watched Toy's in the Attic on TCM. Fab movie. They just do not make them like they used to these days.

I love la strada. I bought it on DVD cuz I couldn't.... NOT ! 🖖

I absolutely love this adorable masterpiece, with Geraldine Page, and narrated by Truman Capote, a mini bio of his own childhood.
Sad. Can’t hardly get anyone to watch it. Sad. No one wants to watch an old movie anymore, the lessons learned here are priceless.... the beauty and heartbreak.... Truman’s real story about his upbringing!!!

In the midst of greed, hustle & bustle is a most welcomed story of simplicity of soul! Thanks for posting this classic treasure!
It is the simplicity of this story that makes it so tender and warm.......after all it is the simple things in life that often matter most.
And superb acting.
I watch this every year. My children and I loved it,but now I watch by myself and also cry like a baby every year!
Karen Farhat Sometimes I think that's how it'll end up with me

This is beyond precious
This is based on Capotes childhood, his last words were reportedly his last words were, "It's me, it's Buddy". I hope that he is reunited with Sook
wouldn't that be magnificent - and the little Queenie with them!
Yes. His true story💖

A Childs Christmas in Wales - although its different again from The Christmas Memory, it is still with its own boyish innocence
People make fun of fruit cakes but even when I was a kid in the 50s the ingredients were very expensive. Giving a fruit cake was NOT cheap.
Intro music is perfect
what year was this made?
1966.
What year is this filmed I love it
It was released in 1969.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
1984??
In the public domain... Yeah Sure!
Jan Varnon
I prefer the black and white version with Patty Duke.
😭
Wish it wasn’t marred by that commercial right in the middle. God forgive you.
