Yes and I know that he was Catholic in real life too! Just like Fr O'Malley, Patsy, and Mrs Breen the housekeeper. I don't know if her son "Eddie" who had the fight with your husband, was though.

This is a splendid film. Bing Crosby is outstanding as Fr. O'Malley. Ingrid Bergman is superb as Sister Superior. And she looks beautiful in a habit. The children are darling in this film. Thank you Clark for posting this.
One of my favorite Catholic movies of all time. This was back when America still had a soul and loved what was good. In our time no one can understand the love between priests and nuns that transcends any notion of sex. It's emphasis was on practical living our faith. I really like sister giving the kid boxing lessons... It seams that father and sister complimented each others strengths and weaknesses for the common good.
spasjt Thank you... May the time come when the Church is once again honored for what she truly is. The light of the world in Christ's physical absence.
Now I am not Catholic, and certainly respect everyone's right to worship the way they see best for them. I agree with you that this was when political correctness was not a thought in our national conscience and religion was well respected, and America loved what was good. I really liked that part, America loved what was good. This movie and the prequel, Going My Way, are certainly two excellent examples of what was good.
I totally agree on your take of this movie! Somewhere along the way Hollywood lost imagination, and the actors lost their ability to act. The more C.G., and more skin shown constitutes a great movie in today's world. The more I watch these old movies, the less I like today's Hollywood! The old Hollywood took great stories and great actors and put them together, but always left room for the viewers imagination. Ingrid Bergman was the true definition of a STAR!

Absolutely beautiful movie. “Father please help remove all bitterness from my heart, and father , let me accept your Holy will for me and my life.” So many lessons in this movie. You will shed tears. And I hope this movie brings more people to the Catholic Faith. Just beautiful!
Alara Hillton God bless you, a Christmas tradition in our home since when I was a little girl. I am 70 now! Merry Christmas and have a wonderful and blessed new year.
Alara Hillton I’m so glad you told me, it’s hard to be alone. I am 70 years old, and have to be in bed most of the time because of the spinal injury. (30 years ago). It would be my honor to pray for you. I try to find someone each day that I can pray for, I feel that’s what God wants me to do right now, since I can’t do active things...Thank you for telling me. Again, God bless you. I will also pray that God puts someone special in your life....❤️
OVER HERE! You’re right, I have raised seven children, and now have nine grandchildren. I think a lot of respect begins in the home, but friends are such an influence! You’re right about that discipline, Catholic education did give me discipline in some areas, but in someways, I was always afraid.Afraid that I would go to hell, afraid of “is this a mortal sin. I can tell you that if I would’ve had pictures like these sisters and priest, it would have been an awesome experience. Thanks for your comments. Definitely food for thought. God bless you, and I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
I'm Irish & this was ESSENTIAL watching every Christmas. The whole family (9 of us) sat down & watched it when this came on. Lots of happy memories. Thanks for posting this xx
Catholic Mother of 9 children here… some of them home sick with me sick as well today . I needed something for us all to watch together as we rest. I couldn’t think of a better movie today than this! Lots of smiles and tears watching with the children … a real balm to my soul and a much needed rest taking care of the sick while sick. ❤️🕊️ Thank you for making it available for us to savor. Tonight St. Nicholas comes to fill their shoes with chocolate coins for the feast day of St. Nicholas tomorrow, December 6!!!
From one Catholic mom to another... I hope that you feel better soon! Sending up prayers for all of you... for rest, peace, comfort, strength and healing!

This film resonates with all Parochial School people I am sure. That innocence of grade school we can still get in touch with decades later. The Sisters, the jokes on the board, the schoolyard fights, the excitement and wonder of Christmas, the future in front of us at graduation. I never get tired of it.

What??The abuse the horrible things nuns would say to us knowing they would get away with anything and I won't even go into what the priests were doing. Oh yeah great times.
I remember watching this as a child. They used to screen it on Christmas Eve and it never failed to make me cry but in a good way. It was the perfect way to start Christmas.

This was my Dad's favorite movie. He passed four years ago at 90. I just watched the movie for the first time here. In my tears I finally understand Dad. Merry Christmas ole Partner.
I can relate to this movie as a child going to a Catholic school grades 1 to 8th. Then to a Catholic high School DeMatha in Hyattsville, Maryland. Great times, playing sports and having to study as I am the oldest of 5 boys. My parents sacrificed for our education, all my brothers including myself turned out very successful. God Bless America !
I, also, went to Catholic school...St Jude's and Academy of the Holy Cross in Kensington, MD. Hi DeMatha! I had a nephew that went there. Love this movie! Love seeing the nuns in full habit again.
Its a beautiful movie! A movie full of hope and love. A movie that will teach you there is joy in giving! Truly enjoyed every bit of it! Thank you God for guiding me to watch it!
I never get tired of watching the amazing film. Such beauty of Spirit, love and service. And the finest of actors in Ingrid, Bing and others. Thank you you tube for this timeless movie.
Sentimental movie - reminds me of my Catholic grade school, even the Nun's habits are similar. Although our classrooms were crowded the Nuns had complete control because they had our respect. Since religion was a subject in Catholic schools we learned about our Catholic faith from the Baltimore Catechism. We not only received an excellent education, but learned how to be disciplined and how to be respectful. Thank you for this beautiful movie!
this was one of the many classic movies that were shown on free TV over and over again leading up to Christmas in the late 70s and early 80s. Wonderful life was also one. over and over and over again, lol. I loved it.
Playing a nun here, in 1945, has nothing to do with running away four years later with a most admired Italian director whom, by the way, she married in 1950. I don’t see any scandal here. Only bigotry from those who never mind their own business. Actually, the big hypocrisy is that Hollywood made a fuss about it just because she was no longer a money-maker to them, once gone. They are used to pulling the strings of bigotry if needed. That’s plain cynicism. Who’s gonna be fooled by that ? Show business people, especially in Hollywood, don’t believe in anything but cash. Bergman wasn’t that type. After all, she was from Sweden, and they didn’t understand people like her, obviously. Good for her ! (And well done !) Black and white is always a better choice than color for closeups (and it provides the kind of distance that favors and allows the dream ...). I wish they shot more films in black and white nowadays, although it’s more expensive ...
I agree with you ... and after she died in 1982 Gregory Peck said about her that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen..... and no makeup at all on her face......!!!!!!!!!!
When the children are saying the pledge of allegiance the part “under God” is not there! I was surprised so I looked it up and “under God” was not added until 1954. This was made 1945. Never knew this
I can't believe that I had never seen this movie until now. I always knew it was a classic, but I had never actually seen it. What great lessons to be learned from it! A spiritual masterpiece!
It's sentimental, sweet, and entertaining yet has a message in it and makes the world seem good and wholesome. I hope more films like this will be made in this generation. It will do us good.
I grew up in this era and went to catholic school, the nuns were great and so were the priests. I am now 75, and thankful I had such a good upbringing and a great family.
@@hmldjr Thanks, I'm glad someone agrees with me. The kids in my school got slapped bloody by those vicious nuns for the most littlest reasons. And they weren't bad kids either. One nun stood behind me and slapped me hard on the back of my head every time I misspelled a word and that went on and on for the entire spelling test, when I got home I wanted to kill myself I was so shook up. I was a quiet shy kid, and I never got out of line but I got the pointer stick across both hands several times just for being a little late. I hope those abusive nuns rot in hell.
j drex Your parents must have been donating big bucks to the church for you to get special consideration, because those kids who had parents who gave a good pile of money were left alone by those brutal nuns. unfortunately, I came form a poor family, so I got slapped around all the time , and I was a shy quiet kid and I never got out of line. So don't say I deserved it, no kid deserves to be abused the way the kids in my school were.
@@leeclark4495 The nuns were bastards. The principal at my school broke a kid's hand with a steel ruler and the nus would bash your head against the black board or wall as punishment. Don't give me the crap that was shoveled in this movie. They were bastards.

What a beautiful, precious movie! I smiled, I laughed and, here and there, I also shed tears of joy and nostalgia. How sad that the sister had to leave St Mary's. She meant so much for all, and especially for the children. How I love those good old times! Many thanks for uploading this brilliant movie.
I’m not sure how many times I’ve watched this movie I know at least 5 maybe more. I think I love it simply because I wanted to be a noun so badly in my youth , but for many reasons I was discouraged and told I would never be allowed to be one. Simply , because I wasn’t Catholic as well as being African American, but mostly my dream of a husband with children . I am so thankful Almighty God blessed me with all the desires of my heart , genuine sincere belief, trust and love of and for God in my heart, a loving husband of 45 years and a son and granddaughter that I cherish .

My mother and grandmother watched The Bells of St. Mary's at Christmas time for many many many years and I just watched it for the first time myself and it was such a beautiful movie Merry Christmas everyone
I started watching and got so enraged after 10 minutes of this crap because all I can think about are beaten and abused children, I had to stop. Have to find some Christmas movie without the Catholic pretence of decency.
Beth S It’s so sad that you think that about Catholic schools. I was a little girl who attended parochial school and I never saw anybody hit or beaten or abused. We were educated very well. We were taught to love God and our country. We were taught discipline and kindness. The sisters were very good at moving mountains through prayer and sacrifice. They were very poor and truly knew how to stretch a dollar. We used donated paper that had been used on one side because they couldn’t afford new paper but we learned well. There was never any ugliness, it was the 50’s. My family watched this wonderful movie every Christmas and loved it.
Hats off to Clark Leeth for making this great and wonderful movie available. I've not seen a movie as good as this one for years. It was one you can watch and afterwards feel good about yourself and others. It's a cleansing kind of film to me. Blessings on Clark Leeth and family. Thank you!!!
One of my favorites..when I'm feeling down I watch this to remember though it's an old movie it shows God is still there for us even though I feel all alone..❤
A Beautiful gift to your Wife Penny. Thank you for sharing this gift with us all. I never tire of watching it. I read everyone's comments. It is a Wonderful Movie about moral's , values. They have not changed as some say. They are instilled in us all. We must remember that. For kindness to life and all we experience , how we conduct ourselves is where ones values lye. What's in our heart's and Soul's. It's to walk with the Grace of God.
Not so sure. I jokingly said ba humbug to a clerk who clearly had no clue what I was talking about. Somewhere, somehow and in someway, something is seriously wrong with this generation.
Seriously though, generation X, watched it, and had zero clue what's the angle here. Checked some IMDB review, and there's your eye-opener - I had never known about 70 kids in one class room, nor of lethal fires in school buildings, I had heard comments that the nuns could "play in rough" ("just the way it was in those times") from boomers though - go figure! So, it was a necessary movie in it's time! Yet, they are a changing, for better or worse, that's open to subjectivity.
The don't make movies of substance period.Everthing is sexual nude scenes to give reality well I for one, go to the movies to escape reality ! I want to be entertained. I don't want to see druggies and gun violence and pornography (ALMOST) Movies after the depression catered to family-friendly audience made you feel good, happy, proud. What a wonderful movie. So touching. Made me cry like a baby. I just love Bing in about everything he's done. But this was his finest movie. I know he won an Oscar for his role. Ingrid Bergman was as fine an actress as they come. So very well done.
People may say I've been living under a rock to have missed this holiday classic all these years, but better late than never. I love movies of this era and was seeking those with a Christmas theme. This certainly did not disappoint. There is magic in the acting back then: subtle, honest, clear. To say that nothing like this has existed for awhile now is an obvious understatement. This year, at this time, I am grateful to those people who still cherish these precious memories and are kind enough to share them with others like me who would likely never come across them otherwise. God bless, Merry Christmas, and the peace of the season in the New Year as well.

This is a splendid film. Bing Crosby is outstanding as Fr. O'Malley. Ingrid Bergman is superb as Sister Superior. And she looks beautiful in a habit. The children are darling in this film. Thank you Clark for posting this.
Here we are again at next year. One of the best classic movies. Just love🕊⚘🎄

Thank you...
Oh God Bless you! Say your rosary and pray, fatima prophecies are happening right now
I totally agree on your take of this movie!
What a beautiful movie! So simplistic yet so heartwarming. May God heal our society today. 🙏
This is BULLSHIT - go to 10:31 they cut out the REAL pledge of allegiance which includes "AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION UNDER GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely beautiful movie. “Father please help remove all bitterness from my heart, and father , let me accept your Holy will for me and my life.”
So many lessons in this movie.
You will shed tears. And I hope this movie brings more people to the Catholic Faith. Just beautiful!
Alara Hillton God bless you, a Christmas tradition in our home since when I was a little girl. I am 70 now! Merry Christmas and have a wonderful and blessed new year.
Jude Christenson thank you. This may have been the first time I saw it. I am 67; alone; and need some healing. Merry Christmas.
I was educated in the Catholic Church appreciate the sisters that taught me respect their dedication

This film resonates with all Parochial School people I am sure. That innocence of grade school we can still get in touch with decades later. Brings back memories of going to St Ann’s for 8 years in Jersey city. The school is gone but the church is still there. Great movie thank you 😊
Saint Ann's in Bethlehem, PA for 8 years too. The school is larger now. I saw this movie when it first came out...still powerful.
The church no longer "up to its neck in nuns," as the rectory housekeeper complains.
NOT ALL OF US HAD GOOD MEMORIES OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS. I KNOW YOU WANT TO REMEMBER THE GOOD AND SO DO I.

I loved it.
I also loved the trouble with angels during the holiday season
She is sooooo BEAUTIFUL, it’s unreal how even in black and white her glow just shines straight through to your heart
She’s has more class and beauty than these so called famous today.
You better believe it....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(And well done !)
Black and white is always a better choice than color for closeups (and it provides the kind of distance that favors and allows the dream ...). I wish they shot more films in black and white nowadays, although it’s more expensive ...
I agree with you ... and after she died in 1982 Gregory Peck said about her that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen..... and no makeup at all on her face......!!!!!!!!!!

@@hmldjr Thanks, I'm glad someone agrees with me. The kids in my school got slapped bloody by those vicious nuns for the most littlest reasons. And they weren't bad kids either. One nun stood behind me and slapped me hard on the back of my head every time I misspelled a word and
that went on and on for the entire spelling test, when I got home I wanted to kill myself I was so shook up. I was a quiet shy kid, and I never got out of line but I got the pointer stick across both hands several times just for being a little late. I hope those abusive nuns rot in hell.

I’m not sure how many times I’ve watched this movie I know at least 5 maybe more. I think I love it simply because I wanted to be a noun so badly in my youth , but for many reasons I was discouraged and told I would never be allowed to be one.

It wasn't rehearsed. The director simply let the kids improvise, and filmed it as is.
Yes, I loved that scene too! I hadn't seen this movie before, so thank you Clark Leeth for sharing it.
Agree, my absolute favorite part of this wonderful movie!
how could anyone God fearing American give this a thumbs down! Awesome movie great memories!

Fantastic piece of film making ...
A rare sight these days
Ive known of this movie for most of my life but, had never watched it. I turned 69 yrs old 2 days ago and have not been dealing with it very well.
I lost my husband almost 5 yrs ago and as Ive gotten older, losing him has become more and more painful. He had always been my strength and not having him with me has been very difficult. We had 45 very good years together.
Ive not enjoyed the Christmas season or my birthday without him. This movie has cheered me up and helped me understand that God hasnt left me alone or without purpose. Ive realized that I need to be here as long as possible for my daughters and 3 grandchildren. I do, still, have a purpose.
Im very, very glad I watched this.
