Hi gtd65, another cracking video that helped me a lot.
BTW, did you ever find a correct spring brand that fitted well? I have a 2009 Ceed and my R/H coil slightly rubs the inner wheel arch, so I get the feeling it's a Napa brand. I have never changed it, but I keep having to replace the strut bearing every year or so.

@@markwickham1179 Hi Mark. Cheers for the positive feedback. I ended up buying a couple of used struts, from a local breaker yard in the end. As far I can recall, there are differences between the early ED models and the later facelifted variants. That also applies to the bearing knuckle/stub axle as well. It's strange that you are having to replace strut bearing so frequently though? Have you checked to see if the L/H coil is the same width as the R/H coil?
I had a quick look on the Autodoc site and two springs are listed as 08- 2009 to 08-2012 and also up to 07-2009 for the original ED.
Here's the link with the info and you'll see the different dimensions

@@gtd65 Thanks for the information. I'll check that out. I'm actually about to get my mechanic to take a look because he has safer spring compression tools than I do. Hahahaaa! Hopefully, he'll tell me if the springs are a mismatch and he'll find something that fits. Thanks again!

@@markwickham1179 very welcome Mark. The main thing is just to take the tension off. Some folks ratchet the springs right down and I wouldn't recommend that.
I once watched a qualified mechanic so that, many moons ago and he advised that I should stand well clear.
I was happy to oblige 🤣

Hi, thanks for another informative video - I have just subscribed. I’m interested in your comment regarding the NAPA springs. What kind of noise were you experiencing?
The previous owner of my car had replaced both front springs. If I go over a large speed bump or pot hole I hear a loud noise, sounding like it’s coming from the spring on both sides. It’s had new top mounts and bearings, lower ball joints, drop links and inner + outer tie rods so I’m confident it’s not any of them.

Hi Jack, the Napa spring was rubbing on the inner wing. It was too fat on one of the coils. It made a grinding or scraping noise on certain turns. Probably just a defective item.
If you've got any knocking or clunking, going over bumps, etc., it's pretty likely to be related to the drop links that attach to the suspension units. I've done a couple of video on them. Pretty quick and easy to change, if you don't have corrosion issues and also fairly cheap. Roughly £12 for a pair delivered on eBay.

@@gtd65 thank you! I noticed on one of the springs, near the bottom ring the black surface as worn off - looks like the coil above has been scraping on itself. Could be the same issue? I replaced the drop links a few months ago to fix a much fainter knocking/rattle noise.

@@jackdavies6504 was the paint worn on the edge of the spring? Then possibly rubbing on the inner wing of the car?
I jacked my car up and got a pal to turn the steering lock to lock. That's when I noticed the rubbing on the inner wing.
There are two different types of front suspension on the Ceed but both appear to fit ok.
If you've got somebody that could rock the car side to side while you touch or hold the suspension components, you should find out where there might be some play easily enough.

@@gtd65 I think it was on the edge, I had a look just now but I can’t see it with the strut being on the car and all dirty. I remember seeing it when I was changing the top mounts. I get a fairly loud ‘booiinng’ when go over a speed bump or large pot hole. Definitely sounds like the spring. Anyway it’s not easy to diagnose as it takes a fair bit of force to replicate the noise, which I can’t do by rocking the car. Do you know if the ceed springs will fit the i30?

    • @gtd65
      @gtd65  Год назад +1

@@jackdavies6504 it could be that the spring is catching on the inner wing when you go over a bump etc.? Can you get the front end jacked up and a pal to do some lock to lock turns of the wheel to see if anything is rubbing? I tried that with the wheels on and didn't notice anything but with the wheel off it was very apparent. I only had the problem on one side and that was the side with the new spring. Have you checked to see if you have a snapped spring? It's usually just the smaller upper coil that breaks off, in my experience, that is.

***UPDATE*** The NAPA branded spring is not the correct fitment for this vehicle. It is too wide and rubs the inner side of the chassis.

@@drdresnoop08 Yeah, it's a strange one. Did you also buy the Napa part?
I had some very lengthy emails and phone calls with Napa.

@@drdresnoop08 I'm not sure why the mechanic would say it might rub for a few days, unless he meant that the spring might rotate sightly bedding itself in. I wouldn't be expecting any noise or rubbing at all really.

@@gtd65 so I realised when the car is on all four wheels and the spring is compressed there is room and it's not touching the sides. What it is touching is 2 bolts that poke through from under the bonnet. So I removed them and cut them in half and now there is no noise and the spring fits!! The only time the spring touches the side now is when I have it jacked up and it's not as compressed so it's touching the side it's not usually at

That is a shame. I hate it when that happens. Was it an error on your part or the ebay listing? At least you have the practice on the cee'd now, next time should go faster. What about trying a left directional drill bit on the snapped brake line mounting bolt? Try a size up on the drill bit, it might help turn that broken piece out; if not, try drilling the rest of the bolt and rethread if you have to.

Highland Minger, It's the correct part number etc., according to NAPA tech support. When I bought the spring, there were a couple of comments on eBay that said it doesn't fit the car.
When I assembled the shock, with the new spring it all looked fine.
I originally thought the grinding was from the strut top bearing but it was the spring rubbing on the inner wing.
It might just be a poorly manufactured spring but it's unlikely I'll buy the NAPA brand again now.
The eBay vendor refunded the cost without any hassle thankfully.
