  • The NV Class, Half Saucer, Intrepid Type or Class is one of the earliest Starfleet vessels that eventually passed into UFP use after the Earth Romulan War of the 22nd Century. First seen in Star Trek Enterprise as part of Earth's defense fleet, this vessel went on to serve longer than the NX class before it.

I really wish Discovery had continued in the vein of Enterprise in terms of ship design, but apparently that was just too much to ask... all of season 1&2 Discovery's Federation ships are weird and angular and anachronistic-looking.

The Half saucer makes a lot of sense for 2 reasons.
    1) As a prototype for building a deep space version. (NX-01)
    2) Since its only intended for short range, no need for a full saucer for storage.

  • @ThreeFoldPath

I still remember when this ship and others came to save the Enterprise at the start of season 3, it was just what I had been waiting for. In the first 2 seasons Starfleet had just felt a little too weak so it was good to see them have some teeth when they were not in deep space. I wish we had got to see the start of a rudimentary Earth Starfleet, but unfortunately the show was cut short.

I really liked how Earth Starfleet in this era has its tube-shaped ships (the Phoenix, the XCV Enterprise, the NX-Beta and other early prototypes), its half-oval ships (the Emmette type from the opening credits), its half-saucer ships (Intrepid class), and its three-quarter-saucer ships (the Franklin from Star Trek Beyond). And then finally the Enterprise rocks onto the scene with a full, round saucer as Earth's most advanced experimental ship.
It doesn't make a lot of PRACTICAL sense, but in terms of IMAGERY it paints a clear story of Earth's shipbuilding style evolving.

    • @irregularassassin6380
      @irregularassassin6380 8 месяцев назад +3

The design of the Franklin fitting in with the other ships of the era is, apparently, purely coincidental! The artist tasked with designing the Freedom-class for _Star Trek: Beyond_ claimed he did not look at any ships other than the Constitution-class for inspiration, and was told to design a ship "centuries" older than the Constitution-class. It's a really cool instance of convergent design evolution!

I find the design of this ship interesting, as it has a half saucer, an aft section that has no negative space and fins under the nacelles. You can tell that some of these elements were refined and made better for the NX Class, so I believe this class was constructed before the NX-01 Enterprise. It is a very intriguing design. What I found particularly fascinating is when the Intrepid assists the Enterprise and the captain talks with Captain Archer you can see how cramped and small it's bridge is compared to the one for the NX Class.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 8 месяцев назад +8

While Intrepid was constructed before Enterprise. NV was paralel design. Intended more as back up, option to reuse parts if situation as with Freedom class (NX prototype) repeat. When it fall apart leading to waste of all designed parts. If Enterprise would fail, they would use pre-produced NX parts to make NV class Destroyers. What in the end they did due to the war.

So here is what I know about NV:
After first NX prototype fall apart (what we now know was Freedom class like USS Franklin). Whole United Earth plans fall apart, with large number of planed and sometimes pre-produced ships like Daedalus, being deemed waste. Archer was really angry about that on Vulcans, who did know about issue, but didn't informed Earth. Though Vulcans argued that Earth would not have this problem if they would test things properly (though in such case Earth would not hack subspeace breaking Warp 5 engine, what later lead to Vulcans giving humanity they Warp 7, to rid off time traveling Archer drives). So it sort of work?
Anyway. NV was designed with memory of previous failure in mind. Or specifically NX was designed in a way so its parts could be reused for lighter Destroyers, comparably in firepower to early NX, but without all that fancy space needed for labs and explorer related commodities. NV paralel Ganges class, what despite being part of failed project, because it was refit of older Neptune class (aka Emmette type) could be refitted back with Warp 2 engines. What they did during the shows.
Despite being concept/back up. Some number of NV ships was made during Earth-Romulan War, what lead to sudden cancellation of NX (of which only 4 were made and two lost immediately on beginning of the war, with maybe one or two more entering service as almost finished). NV was prioritized as cheaper. At least until NX was redesign in Poseidon class Destroyers, with doubled firepower. Though with cost of removal of field stabilizer (what was present only in Columbia refits of NX, what also have early shield). Fortunately conclusion of Enterprise mission, allow refitting of canceled ships like Freedom and Daedalus with working Warp 4 engine. Total, 20 NX family ships were made. Some even could stay later in service with Loknar class refit, what is clearly FASA version of NX. Not to mention TMP Era Columbia remake.
Though it is a theory, it is possible that Starfleet could test cut off version of Poseidon, know as Strider class. What was basically entire Posejdon core, without saucer (what was re-added later in obscure Marklin class Destroyer). Though class entered service when conflict ended and was caned. At least until TMP where design was revision as Light Escort. NX could be also base for famous Constitution, or at least Exeter class. As size fit, at least in original scale.

The NX, Intrepid, and Delta would make a great battlegroup centered on the NX. Like modern carrier strike groups. 1 NX, 2x Intrepid, 3x+ Delta-class. Too bad these other Enterprise ships never made it into Star Trek Online or not yet, they would make a good bundle.

I like to think of the Intrepid as being the NX-class's "Nebula." A likely offshoot of the NX-project, used as a test-bed for the test-bed, and able to integrate with parts designed for, and refined by, its more famous elder sibling.
To clarify for those who don't know, the Nebula-class was a contemporary to the Galaxy-class (Enterprise-D), and was designed to be a 'cheaper' and smaller ship utilizing and sometimes testing the technology developed in the Galaxy project.

The positioning of those radioactive nacelles so close to the crew makes me nervous _and_ I think it would also look better if they were slid back about as far as the length of the bussard collectors.
As for those fins, they also look cool, but I'm skeptical of their functionality. I reckon an ancestor of Tom Paris was a designer and just wanted the Intrepid class to 'go faster'. :)

I was curious if you had ever considered making a video about ship-to-ship combat at warp speeds and what special elements that entails, particularly things like deflectors, warp fields, phasers vs torpedos, how shields function a warp, how cloaking systems function at warp, the added risks and/or benefits (if any). I know you touched on some of this with the Picard Maneuver with the Stargazer, but didn't know if you had delved deeper into this topic in another video. Or, if you already covered this topic, hopefully I'll eventually find my way to it.

Rick, could you do an breakdown of early pre- photon torpedo missile type weapons? Probably starting with our current fusion bomb tipped missiles adapted to space warfare, through the photonic torpedoes we see in Enterprise. When did they make the change over to using anti-matter instead of fusion weapons? The Romulans still had atomic weapons on their ships in Kirk's time, so early Star Fleet and United Earth Defense Force ships must have had those as well. I imagine the cost and complexity to produce antimatter at scale kept them from using it for weapons until some time after Enterprise.

Yes, I know, politically, the other powers probably wanted their own ships, and Earth in particular wouldn't want to seem that backwards as to have to rely on the Vulcans for ships. Nor might the Vulcan's want to give away their own advanced tech that quickly, but it still would have made sense, at least as far as explorer type ships, for the early UFP to use advanced Vulcan ships rather than slower, less powerful Earth ones.

I've always wondered what ships come after the NX class. What are the other ships to carry the Enterprise name.

The original Intrepid had half a saucer, so the new one had a saucer and a half to compensate.

There a fan how modified this design by Moving the warp nacelles back to a more traditional position and removed the fins and called it the NY-01 Endeavor class.
And I thought the NV-01 INTREPID had 4 torpedo tombs; 2 Bow facing, and 2 Aft facing?

Looks a bit like a nx version but what is the need for the fins on the engine pylons

In-atmosphere, are the warp-nacelle fins very aerodynamic?

Idk the nacelles brooding over the top of the saucer section. It seems an odd design function wise. Nacelles are supposed to be separated and off slung for crew safety.

The fins also satisfy the rule of cool because fins are cool

So, is the same as enterprise act as the prototype Gundam(RX78-2) but since they need fast produce gundam. The earth federation(gundam universe) build RGM-79 GM is equal to this NV starship. Interesting.

Some people ma like this Intrepid design and that's totally fine. Personally, I never liked that design and think it's very tacky looking compared to the design of the NX-Class Explorer.

How an NX class Intrepid Starship could drive off Klingon bird of prey been a bit since I've seen that episode it was either one or more than one but still how any of those ships managed to drive off any Klingon ship makes no sense to me

Well you are using their product and they set the rules/terms. YT makes money off of advertising, so anything that deletes ads could cost them in revenue. The only BS is you thinking that you should get something for free, which blocking ads would be. Maybe you should use your own money and time to make a new platform that is free for everyone.
