I used the H&K USP .40 Compact DAO for several years as my assigned duty pistol. It is an extremely rugged and reliable firearm. Liked it so much that I ended up purchasing one for personal use.
My first sidearm when I became a police officer back in 2004 was an HK USP 40 V1 and I loved that pistol. We could carry a personally owned sidearm at my department if it was on the list of approved sidearms and I already had the HK USP. A year later I switched to a Glock 22 because the back-up pistol I carried was a Glock 27 so it made sense to have a sidearm with magazines that could be used in the back-up. I sold my HK USP 40 in 2005 and I've regretted it since. I really miss it. I had a chance to buy an HK USP 40 with a stainless steel slide from another officer back in 2004 and I really regret not buying it. That is such a beautiful pistol. What I didn't like about mine was it got a little holster wear on the slide in only a year of use and it started to rust a little. Also there was a internal lock in the magazine well of the pistol that took a key to lock and unlock the pistol. I don't like internal locks in guns and some guns had those in them back then.
I owned both a USP.40 (which also was my first pistol) as well as the .45 in the Tactical model. Honestly, for 1 less round in the mag, the .45 feels a lot better and is much more of a push of a recoil impulse than the snap of the .40. I'd check the .45 out if you haven't yet. I imagine the 9 is a dream to shoot too.
@@head_eyes9272 40sw.135grn. and 150grn. bullets were never fully explored. 45acp. is great for inside a building, however 40sw leads in penetration and explosive expansion. It is very easy to push a 135grn. Nosler @ 1400 to 1500 fps. This will not have the "snappy" 165grn. or 180grn. recoil impulse that everyone is so paranoid about. 40sw was not really engineered properly from the beginning. Sorry, but with proper bullets and powder, 40sw OUTCLASSES 9MM.and 45acp. Unfortunately everyone was hell bent on cramming 180grn. (or 165grn.) bullets into a 22.5mm case length.
I got really lucky and found this USP 40 V1 police trade in from Santa Barbara Ca., PD for $300.00, so far so good, it was a birthday gift from me to me, and of course I have 3 Glock 22s, 2 are police trade ins i recieved at a great price and the 3rd i purchased brand new.
Well done, sir. A comprehensive and impressive history of my favorite sidearm in my favorite caliber. When I turned 21 I had just returned from my second tour in Desert Storm. After shaking off my hangover I went hunting for this exact pistol to buy. It took me a week to find a shop that had a new one in stock, and I drove an hour to get it. I sold it to buy an engagement ring for my first (of three) wife. It took me 20 years to lay hands on another one, and it'll get buried at Arlington with me. The HK USP 40 is an excellent duty, combat, and EDC weapon.
@@wehrewulf he probably meant that he part took his 2nd tour during desert storm. Probably in other war prior but also could be him making up the entire story, who knows with internet these days. But to add the USP was in blood diamond carried by the coronel.

I’ve considered selling my usp many times over the years. I find that I don’t shoot it too often. Every time I take it out to shoot it again before selling, I decide to keep it. I love to dry fire practice, and the usp isn’t particularly impressive during dry fire. But actually shooting it and running drills… it’s always really impressive. Great video. Thanks!
Several years ago I swapped to primarily 9mm. I kinda left the 40 behind as others did. Fast forward several years to the beginning of the ammo shortage- I began to think it might make sense to keep a 40 around. I picked up a USP 40. I’m glad I did. I wish magazines were more available and less expensive. Holsters and lights are a chore to find as well. I agree the grip texture is aggressive. I just wear gloves for extended shooting sessions. Definitely a quality firearm.
Got a good kydex holster for my operator belt from gcode and my iwb kydex from concealment express. Both for the USP.40 It's the threaded barrel I can't find.
Great video 👍 I agree the HK USP is an excellent pistol, and I was lucky enough to recently pick a USP9 made in 2007 with just 300 rounds through it for just €450. Here in Europe I feel that was a good deal considering the USP sells close to €850-€900 Euro. I’ve only shot it a few times since getting it in April, but can feel it’s a quality firearm.
I have to agree. I purchased a P229 first and more recently a USP 40 (both police trade in and rarely shot) and I have to admit the USP is winning me over!
My first USP was the USP 9mm full size, standard white dot sights. Then I bought the USP I always wanted, the USP45 Tactical with the Suppressor height nights sights. A few months later I wanted to complete my USP full size collection with the USP .40 full size with night sights. All 3 pistols have a old school insight M2 UTL Weapon Mounted Lights. Yes they are now super rare and expensive, going between 300-500 dollars depending on condition and if they have a pressure pad. I chose to go with these old school lights because they work well, have upgraded bulds if you want more Lumens and candela and most of all, form factor and the iconic look of the light that was designed for it. I figured the USP 40 would be my least favorite of them all. After my first range trip, shooting these back to back to back including shooting my USP45 Tactical Suppressed, I found that I enjoyed the USP 40 the most. While I still don't know exactly why I do like it the most, it surely has found a soft spot in my heart. All in all I do love each of them, but if I only could keep one, I stay with my USP 40.

.40 is probably my favorite caliber. I have a Glock 23 I shoot it more accurately than any of my other handguns. I also have a Glock 20 in 10mm. Thanks for a great and very professional video.
I'm fortunate enough to have found 2 USP compacts (40 V4 ,45 CT V1) both at low prices and these are my absolute favorite. I'm a lefty and thes are perfect for my hands out of the box. Add a grey guns trigger with the flat shoes and holy mother of pistols these things are so accurate and of course eat anything and everything. "Over built is the only way to go."-HK
I am not a DA fan, but I am a 357 Sig fan and the ability to treat it like an SA, cocked and locked, means it fits well in my routine/training. I think you just made a sale, at least for the compact. Thanks.
Personally, with the small amount of handgun use and experience I have, I have to agree. Double action just goes against everything I’ve pounded into my muscle memory. I think when I turn 21 I’ll actually carry a full size instead of a compact, just because I dislike double action and I like the idea of cock and lock.
I own - and I love - an H&K USP Tactical chambered in .45 ACP. I cannot adequately express the obvious manufacturing quality and design excellence inherent in this weapon (even in comparison to my Sig P-226, chambered in .40 S&W, which is also a superb firearm).
The first pistol designed for .40! I bought my 1st one when they just released them in the mid 90s. On sale for $350, I also picked up a Russian Makarov for $99, those were the days! I just re-acquired the 2nd one I bought and sold 20 years ago.
FALSE. The first pistol designed for the .40 S&W was a SMITH & WESSON 4006 (duh). The Glock 22 beat it to the commercial market though. The USP wasn't even third...
Been a USP40 fan since 1995 when I got the two tone stainless when it first came. Still have it of course. I even got a .357 sig barrel for it from Firedragon. That idea came to me from my P229 where I have a spare .357sig barrel to go with the original 40sw. I have a lot of USPs in my collection now and the 45T is my favorite, until i pick up another USP and that becomes my favorites. Truth is, you cannot choose one USP over another including the compacts!
Does yours cycle reliably in 357 Sig. Mine runs perfect with 40 but not 357. My USP Compact, P2000, and P2000SK run perfect in both. My full size USP does not.
My KE USP 40 was the first pistol I ever purchased when I turned 21. It continues to be one of my favorites. An absolutely tank. The P2000 had a somewhat 1913 rail prior to the HK45. I LOVE USP videos!
In ‘94, I think it was in August, with the AWB looming, I tried the HK P7 and Glock, and they felt like bricks in hand. The USP9 felt perfect, so I bought 2.
I own quite a few handguns to say the least ;-) . My shooting career started over half a century ago and I can say unequivocally that there is no handgun that shoots better then my HK USP COMPACK 40SW. It is simply the very very best!
I own a number of USP pistols but recently purchased a HK P30 in .40 S&W instead of a USP because I figured it was a more modern version of the USP. I believe I'm correct in that assessment too. But USP's are AMAZING!!!!
This pistol was issued and 1997-2000 in a SoCa police agency I was a reserve police officer for 3 years up to that point. They issued this pistol to our academy attendees and duty weapons. Our agency was only 165 officers, detectives and command staff with 15 reserve officers. I was carrying a custom para ordinance P14. I was issued the weapon, I really liked how it shot but I didnt like tha mag release. It just bugged me that it was next to my right hand middle finger... I went back to the p14 which was allowed. In 2000, that agency switched to Glock 22/23 which they continue today.
Bought my first one in 1995 NEW for like $600 and got a .357 Sig barrel (JARVIS) for it! Awesome I still have it and swap it out with my daily CCW (Canik TP9 ELITE SC)
I remember being issued one of these, great pistols...Mine would always auto-forward when I slammed in a new magazine... And folks thought the serrations were too aggressive?? HA HA HA--*laughs in VZ Operator II's*
At least H&K is still making 40S&W guns. The ability to easily convert to 357 Sig is big bonus. The 40S&W is an excellent and capable cartridge, with many loads outperforming hot 9mm+P loads.

I just purchased a brand new USP V1 9mm..it came with only 2 10rd mags. Which is my biggest complaint. Now i have to go purchase some 15 or 17 rd mags externally...and the mags are friggin expensive...however, USP is indeed a one of a kind. Of all the pistols ive shot in the past...nothing compares to the USP except maybe a high dollar 1911. I also own the Sig 2022..also a very nice piece..but the USP is now my favorite..also these guns are meant for a lifetime, and an heirloom..( if u wanted to pass it on)..Just be ready to drop at least $1000 if you are looking to buy one
Great gun! It was probably the 2nd or 3rd sidearm I bought after I got my permit. The USP is a classic, I'll probably always have one in my collection.

Good video! I carried the USP 45 in LE, after mothballing my Beretta 92FS. Well I didn’t like the USP due to the fact that the thumb rests on the safety/decocker on the USP (just like a 1911). Any pressure on that lever (up or down) and the gun fails to fire. Under stress and rapid fire training, I got tired of this occurrence. According to a seal team member and co-founder of Blackwater (Al Clark), he said the problem I had was also the reason why the seals rejected the USP (not the Mk 23) as their main sidearm back then. Years later, I heard the seals did go with the USP compact however. Anyway, I just wasn’t impressed with the USP 45 much, so I went back to my Beretta 92FS. I only wished I could have carried a USP .40 as it’s not as bulky as the 45. Eventually my department then authorized Sigs, Glocks and M&P’s in 9mm or 45 only. I went with the Glock 17 and never looked back, due to the highest round capacity with factory magazines. Fast forward today and I’m still a Glock fanatic. I do have a few Hk’s but I’m just not a fan of their bulky size, high centered barrels and ridiculous cost of factory magazines. Also getting parts for my Hk’s is stupid difficult as well. I’m retiring within months and I’ll be carrying a gen5 Glock 23 .40 for EDC. The new Gen 5 .40’s have thicker, heavier slides.
I liked that HK priced high. They have the best stock barrels. I don’t know about the newer cheaper V or P series but the USP has a really good barrel. The build and barrel ;It justifies the cost

I like the.40 S&W cartridge as a self defense cartridge, as a police officer for many years my department had us carrying Glock model 22s and 23s. They didn’t hold up well to the cartridge, though. This looks like a beast that will do well with it. I would love a comparison between the new updated Gen 5 model 22 Glocks to see if they are sufficiently durable. I think that the HK would still beat the pants off of the new and improved Glocks. I did get another pistol designed for the .40, a Browning High Power. It handles the cartridge well and shoots nicely, but I am afraid to put too much wear on the gun as it is a unicorn nowadays. And the sucker is good for giving you slide bite, lol. @@Gieszkanne The frames would stretch and the pins in the frame would subsequently begin walking out. I was an armorer and remembered that we had to replace some guns with a very low round count in them after that began to happen. A few thousand rounds of duty ammo (Winchester Ranger 180 grain hollowpoints usually) and a couple guns were done. The 9mm Glocks we had before were very durable, but the .40 S&W cartridge was too high pressured for the 9mm sized frames. We had other issues like cracked locking blocks and pins shearing in half, but not as much as simple frame stretching. We contacted Glock about it, but there was no fix and the frames (and therefore the guns) had to be replaced. Some guns held up okay, but some didn’t last long at all. I didn’t hate the Glocks because of it, and in fact carry a Glock 17 in 9mm to this day now that I am retired. The cartridge was simply too hot for the pistols it was chambered in.
@@johndilday1846 Thanks Interesting! I guess these where gen 2 and 3 Glocks? But one thing is wrong. The 40S&W has a pressure of 35,000 psi. Thats the standard pressure of 9mm. 9mm +p+ is around 39,000, so its not the pressure. But the 40 has of course more energy. The new 22/23 gen 5 have a thicker slide than the 17/19. Maybe that will help.
@@Gieszkanne Thanks. I was never a reloader, and was only an armorer. Our bosses told us that the .40 had more pressure, so we believed them. Thanks for setting me straight. I just know that they kicked harder than the 9mm guns, to the point that some of our guys had a harder time qualifying with them.
Had a chance to buy one used for 450 .. it was a very close friend i trusted or i would have thought it was hot... I was scared away from it bwcause of parts availability... And i had no handgun at the time and needed a gun i could source parts for. A shtf gun.. i ended up with a glock 17.. i really hate myself for passing.. i could have always got a glock 17.. not every day you run across a usp 40 in like new condition.. neither of us knew what he had.. fml
The first pistol I ever bought. I bought a used one from a gunshop back in 98 or 99. Regretted parting ways with it down the road.. Thought about buying another in the past couple years, but wound up going for the Glock 22 when they released the Gen 5.
I just bought a USP 9 last week. Haven't shot it yet. I have a USPc 9mm stainless in the late 90s. About 7 or 8 years ago, I gave it to my daughter. Grrrrrr. I could have given her another handgun.
They really need some dedicated 10mm.magazines for that bad boy.The 7.5 mags when loaded with 10mm. are not to be trusted. But yes, what an awesome platform 10mm.(or 9×25 Dillon, which is pretty close to 7.5 performance with 90grn. Lehigh xtreme defence copper bullets or even the Fort Scott projectiles). BRNO would not sell as much of their precious 7.5 ammo......would they!?
@@almaadams3631 you just can't overload the 10mm mags and you'll be fine, when you load it with 40 is when it's sketchy, idk 7.5fk is still much easy to get. For about the same price, better at distance and piercing body armor at 150 yards, then again I have no experience with the Dillon round. I'm sure its comparable. But at least the round they manufacture is very high quality, custom service is excellent as well, Its very manageable recoil wise as well. I'd like to test a 9x25 Dillon one day and see the difference,

For the last 12 years two of my daughters have and still to this day carry USP .40’s. They refuse to get rid of them. They also use and carry C-75b’s.

Years ago I picked up a brand new USP 40 with an FDE frame. It also came with a tan H&K case and a cleaning kit. Still one of my favorites!
.40 is probably my favorite caliber. I have a Glock 23 I shoot it more accurately than any of my other handguns. I also have a Glock 20 in 10mm. Thanks for a great and very professional video.

I'm fortunate enough to have found 2 USP compacts (40 V4 ,45 CT V1) both at low prices and these are my absolute favorite. I'm a lefty and thes are perfect for my hands out of the box. Add a grey guns trigger with the flat shoes and holy mother of pistols these things are so accurate and of course eat anything and everything. "Over built is the only way to go."-HK
I love my USP40. It was my first pistol and also my 21st bday present from my dad.
I am not a DA fan, but I am a 357 Sig fan and the ability to treat it like an SA, cocked and locked, means it fits well in my routine/training. I think you just made a sale, at least for the compact. Thanks.
Personally, with the small amount of handgun use and experience I have, I have to agree. Double action just goes against everything I’ve pounded into my muscle memory. I think when I turn 21 I’ll actually carry a full size instead of a compact, just because I dislike double action and I like the idea of cock and lock.
I own - and I love - an H&K USP Tactical chambered in .45 ACP. I cannot adequately express the obvious manufacturing quality and design excellence inherent in this weapon (even in comparison to my Sig P-226, chambered in .40 S&W, which is also a superb firearm).
The first pistol designed for .40! I bought my 1st one when they just released them in the mid 90s. On sale for $350, I also picked up a Russian Makarov for $99, those were the days!
I just re-acquired the 2nd one I bought and sold 20 years ago.

Been a USP40 fan since 1995 when I got the two tone stainless when it first came. Still have it of course. I even got a .357 sig barrel for it from Firedragon. That idea came to me from my P229 where I have a spare .357sig barrel to go with the original 40sw. I have a lot of USPs in my collection now and the 45T is my favorite, until i pick up another USP and that becomes my favorites. Truth is, you cannot choose one USP over another including the compacts!
Does yours cycle reliably in 357 Sig. Mine runs perfect with 40 but not 357. My USP Compact, P2000, and P2000SK run perfect in both. My full size USP does not.

My KE USP 40 was the first pistol I ever purchased when I turned 21. It continues to be one of my favorites. An absolutely tank. The P2000 had a somewhat 1913 rail prior to the HK45. I LOVE USP videos!

In ‘94, I think it was in August, with the AWB looming, I tried the HK P7 and Glock, and they felt like bricks in hand. The USP9 felt perfect, so I bought 2.
I own quite a few handguns to say the least ;-) .
My shooting career started over half a century ago and I can say unequivocally that there is no handgun that shoots better then my HK USP COMPACK 40SW.
It is simply the very very best!

I own a number of USP pistols but recently purchased a HK P30 in .40 S&W instead of a USP because I figured it was a more modern version of the USP. I believe I'm correct in that assessment too. But USP's are AMAZING!!!!
My first pistol was a HKUSP 45 I bought in 1998ish. Still have it to this day.
This pistol was issued and 1997-2000 in a SoCa police agency I was a reserve police officer for 3 years up to that point. They issued this pistol to our academy attendees and duty weapons. Our agency was only 165 officers, detectives and command staff with 15 reserve officers. I was carrying a custom para ordinance P14. I was issued the weapon, I really liked how it shot but I didnt like tha mag release. It just bugged me that it was next to my right hand middle finger... I went back to the p14 which was allowed. In 2000, that agency switched to Glock 22/23 which they continue today.
Bought my first one in 1995 NEW for like $600 and got a .357 Sig barrel (JARVIS) for it! Awesome I still have it and swap it out with my daily CCW (Canik TP9 ELITE SC)
I have an HK USP Expert in .45ACP and plan on getting a USP 9 in 9x19mm. Awesome review!

At least H&K is still making 40S&W guns. The ability to easily convert to 357 Sig is big bonus. The 40S&W is an excellent and capable cartridge, with many loads outperforming hot 9mm+P loads.
I live in the UK so handgun ownership is illegal here, however having said that I own a CO2 BB USP gun. I have to say it’s quite fun firing it.

I just purchased a brand new USP V1 9mm..it came with only 2 10rd mags. Which is my biggest complaint. Now i have to go purchase some 15 or 17 rd mags externally...and the mags are friggin expensive...however, USP is indeed a one of a kind. Of all the pistols ive shot in the past...nothing compares to the USP except maybe a high dollar 1911. I also own the Sig 2022..also a very nice piece..but the USP is now my favorite..also these guns are meant for a lifetime, and an heirloom..( if u wanted to pass it on)..Just be ready to drop at least $1000 if you are looking to buy one
Great gun! It was probably the 2nd or 3rd sidearm I bought after I got my permit. The USP is a classic, I'll probably always have one in my collection.

Good video! I carried the USP 45 in LE, after mothballing my Beretta 92FS. Well I didn’t like the USP due to the fact that the thumb rests on the safety/decocker on the USP (just like a 1911). Any pressure on that lever (up or down) and the gun fails to fire. Under stress and rapid fire training, I got tired of this occurrence. According to a seal team member and co-founder of Blackwater (Al Clark), he said the problem I had was also the reason why the seals rejected the USP (not the Mk 23) as their main sidearm back then. Years later, I heard the seals did go with the USP compact however. Anyway, I just wasn’t impressed with the USP 45 much, so I went back to my Beretta 92FS. I only wished I could have carried a USP .40 as it’s not as bulky as the 45. Eventually my department then authorized Sigs, Glocks and M&P’s in 9mm or 45 only. I went with the Glock 17 and never looked back, due to the highest round capacity with factory magazines. Fast forward today and I’m still a Glock fanatic. I do have a few Hk’s but I’m just not a fan of their bulky size, high centered barrels and ridiculous cost of factory magazines. Also getting parts for my Hk’s is stupid difficult as well. I’m retiring within months and I’ll be carrying a gen5 Glock 23 .40 for EDC. The new Gen 5 .40’s have thicker, heavier slides.

LOVE my 1995 USP40 V-1w/adjustable sights. Only the Beretta PX4 and S&W Third Gen autos are as forgiving with regards to felt recoil...IMHO.

I liked that HK priced high. They have the best stock barrels. I don’t know about the newer cheaper V or P series but the USP has a really good barrel. The build and barrel ;It justifies the cost
Thanks for sharing, Chris. I never gave the HK USP .40 a thought before. I like the.40 S&W cartridge as a self defense cartridge, as a police officer for many years my department had us carrying Glock model 22s and 23s. They didn’t hold up well to the cartridge, though. This looks like a beast that will do well with it. I would love a comparison between the new updated Gen 5 model 22 Glocks to see if they are sufficiently durable. I think that the HK would still beat the pants off of the new and improved Glocks. I did get another pistol designed for the .40, a Browning High Power. It handles the cartridge well and shoots nicely, but I am afraid to put too much wear on the gun as it is a unicorn nowadays. And the sucker is good for giving you slide bite, lol. What did happen to the Glocks?
@@Gieszkanne The frames would stretch and the pins in the frame would subsequently begin walking out. I was an armorer and remembered that we had to replace some guns with a very low round count in them after that began to happen. A few thousand rounds of duty ammo (Winchester Ranger 180 grain hollowpoints usually) and a couple guns were done. The 9mm Glocks we had before were very durable, but the .40 S&W cartridge was too high pressured for the 9mm sized frames. We had other issues like cracked locking blocks and pins shearing in half, but not as much as simple frame stretching. We contacted Glock about it, but there was no fix and the frames (and therefore the guns) had to be replaced. Some guns held up okay, but some didn’t last long at all. I didn’t hate the Glocks because of it, and in fact carry a Glock 17 in 9mm to this day now that I am retired. The cartridge was simply too hot for the pistols it was chambered in.
@@johndilday1846 Thanks Interesting! I guess these where gen 2 and 3 Glocks? But one thing is wrong. The 40S&W has a pressure of 35,000 psi. Thats the standard pressure of 9mm. 9mm +p+ is around 39,000, so its not the pressure. But the 40 has of course more energy. The new 22/23 gen 5 have a thicker slide than the 17/19. Maybe that will help.
@@Gieszkanne Thanks. I was never a reloader, and was only an armorer. Our bosses told us that the .40 had more pressure, so we believed them. Thanks for setting me straight. I just know that they kicked harder than the 9mm guns, to the point that some of our guys had a harder time qualifying with them.

Had a chance to buy one used for 450 .. it was a very close friend i trusted or i would have thought it was hot... I was scared away from it bwcause of parts availability... And i had no handgun at the time and needed a gun i could source parts for. A shtf gun.. i ended up with a glock 17.. i really hate myself for passing.. i could have always got a glock 17.. not every day you run across a usp 40 in like new condition.. neither of us knew what he had.. fml
The first pistol I ever bought. I bought a used one from a gunshop back in 98 or 99. Regretted parting ways with it down the road.. Thought about buying another in the past couple years, but wound up going for the Glock 22 when they released the Gen 5.

I have an early example with a non captured guide rod and conventional rifling. Decades later and zero issues.
I just bought a USP 9 last week. Haven't shot it yet. I have a USPc 9mm stainless in the late 90s. About 7 or 8 years ago, I gave it to my daughter. Grrrrrr. I could have given her another handgun.
That was a serious dad move . I hope one day you find another stainless usp . Ultra rare .

They really need some dedicated 10mm.magazines for that bad boy.The 7.5 mags when loaded with 10mm. are not to be trusted.
But yes, what an awesome platform 10mm.(or 9×25 Dillon, which is pretty close to 7.5 performance with 90grn. Lehigh xtreme defence copper bullets or even the Fort Scott projectiles).
BRNO would not sell as much of their precious 7.5 ammo......would they!?
@@almaadams3631 you just can't overload the 10mm mags and you'll be fine, when you load it with 40 is when it's sketchy, idk 7.5fk is still much easy to get. For about the same price, better at distance and piercing body armor at 150 yards, then again I have no experience with the Dillon round. I'm sure its comparable. But at least the round they manufacture is very high quality, custom service is excellent as well, Its very manageable recoil wise as well. I'd like to test a 9x25 Dillon one day and see the difference,
