My first time watching this episode, my wife and I had just experienced a miscarriage, and I was in a terrible state of mind. so in my culture its a huge blessing to see an eagle fly overhead of you its said to be a sign of the great spirits acknowledging your journey and giving their respect and blessing they watch over you and keep you safe so i like to think that Les was blessed that day when he saw the eagle and shared his respect for it and in turn the universe made way for that same eagle to leave some of his own meal to help Les along his journey. and i think thats also why Les finds himself in "lucky" situations or has those moments where you might think its staged but really he just has so much respect for the world around him and the power of mother nature that hes got what most people would call really good karma and this is just the universes way of balancing cuz hes out here risking his life to tell an amazing story and bring us amazing content so he really deserves every bit of luck and divine tidings that comes his way

Thanks for sharing this, my friend. Funny enough, I actually secured a job in Alaska that I'll be starting next month. Back in January it was a done deal that I'd be getting the job but I was still working my old gig. One day I was overcome with a deep feeling that it was finally time to quit after five years of being with them. Right then and there, while on a job site, I told the crew I was leaving and drove away. About a minute after driving out I saw a bald eagle flying directly over my car. I couldn't help but take it as a sign from the universe. Now I'm watching Les in Alaska and I see your comment. Much love brother, take care out there.

It’s super neat, I forget the name though but I watched a few on RUclips so they are here. He bases his search off Missing-411 in one of them and that’s a book series by an ex cop who gathers all the disappearances and the police reports and eyewitness stories and it’s super interesting. There are 3-4 forest areas in the USA some that are absolutely filled with missing people with crazy stories. Sorry for the rant haha

Absolutely love this show and mad respect Les. I watched all these as a kid and at one point after reading "My side of the mountain" I wanted to run off to live in the woods, and your show did not help me with that desire hahaha. Anyways I love the part when you said Alaska is so large that it could fit the 21 smallest states inside it. See as a kid I knew it was big but because of the maps I'd seen I didn't quite understand it till a few years later when my friend told me Alaska was bigger then Texas and I showed him the map and told him maybe sure doesn't look bigger. And he showed me this geography book he had and showed me a realistic interpretation of the world map, blew my young mind, I must have been like 10-11yo. I need to go there someday, I remember going to the coast in Oregon and Washington and it was strange seeing the rainforest there, like the ice cold ocean would literally give you a brain freeze like when you eat too much ice cream to fast, but then you'd see rain come in and the rain would feel warm on your skin and clouds of mist would roll down the mountainside to the sea. Spectacular. That was almost 15 years ago and I remember ever part of it all the sensations I felt.

Gorgeous scenes! Very lonely 6 days. Was that plantain you passed up for the tender leafy lettuce-like plant? Setting up a ground cover would have been my first move to avoid a chill at night. But 9f course shelter was very important too. I am surprised with all that net a sein net capture of those salmon wouldn't have paid off! Thank you for your sharing this experience with your sacrifice to show how truely hard it is out there!

At my last job (ranger) we had to camp out in tents during the winter. We'd survive the night by putting boiling water into plastic bottles and then putting them into our sleeping bags. It was efficient because in the morning you had safe, drinking water to enjoy! (Or you could reheat the water for the next night). We also had stones that we'd heat up as well. It's important to not use a gas heater in tents because of the confined space you can become poisoned. Oh, also if you have a tent, don't put it under a tree with dead upper limbs as those are called 'widow makers' by rangers. Because they can fall off with only a slight breeze and crush you while you sleep (making your spouse a widow). Always best to camp out in a small clearing. And if you HAVE TO camp under trees (dense forest), make sure the tree above you is as healthy as possible with no dead limbs ideally.

About 2 years ago I was on a deployment in the Phillipines for the US Marines. We where just waiting around and I saw these leaves and thought, "Hold up, these look familiar." Started chewing on them, then BAM nutrition. Turns out they where these same leaves from an episode of Survior Man I watched way back when I was probably like 6 years old. It didn't save my life or anything but it was something amazing I could show off to my boys. Thank you for the knowledge Les, it's incredible how something so trivial yet life saving could be taught and remembered many years later.
