    Absolutely loved this project, but it made me kind of sad to hear Rachel feel guilty about buying real leather. Genuine leather is super durable and high quality and so doesn't need to be bought all that often. People who yell at her for using it honestly don't know what they're talking about, especially since she's kept it around for a long time. "Vegan leather" is literally just rebranded plastic!

    • @timhubbard6433

    • @SilverDragonJay
      @SilverDragonJay 2 года назад +157

      From a certain perspective, you could actually argue that real leather is better for the environment overall. After all, regardless of how you feel about it, we do kill animals for meat regardless of leather production. So long as it isn't a specific type of leather from a special kind of cow, the leather will be produced one way or the other so why not use it? Meanwhile, fake leather requires the processing of plastic which is an oil by product (a finite resource) that is bad for the environment both in its production and decomposition. Why not just use leather? So long as you get stuff that's a byproduct of the meat industry, no more cows or sheeps, etc are being killed.
      This is a hypothetical argument of course. I, naturally, don't know enough about the involved industries to really make any definitive claims one way or the other. However I do at least appreciate the market tendency to use literally everything of a butchered animal in one way or another (even if that isn't what the industry itself really cares about). All I do know is that my real leather belt has been holding up a lot better then my old fake leather belt.

    • @thesolocreative3538
      @thesolocreative3538 2 года назад +45

      vegan leather was just plastic... often times it is just plastic and not great. Some advances in vegan leather has meant mushroom leather, corkboard leather etc etc... but yes pleather is not great! Mind you I'm not vegan and I use leather and silk for projects. I haven't looked into the c02 needed to create mushroom leather. I am excited to try working with cork leather in the future though.

    • @Hpalindromeprojects
      @Hpalindromeprojects 2 года назад +60

      exactly this! Leather is more environmentally friendly than pleather. Vegan leather is just pleather, aka plastic leather. Leather will break down, leather will last longer, leather looks nicer and a good leather piece will stay "in style" long after the fast fashion shiny pleather looks old and boring. Leather is not inherently bad.

    You could sew some black bias tape into the inside of the shirt collar and that would help stabilize it quite a bit. It’s main problem is being a knit, so a woven fabric (or non-woven like fusible web) would help a lot with stability.

      My immediate idea was to run the base layer of foam that the spine rides on down another 6-8 inches into your pants and secure it to the waistband. Spine goes all the way down to your pelvic bone. Let the waist of the pants carry the weight. Also, could the base spine layer be shaped (with worbla or coat hanger wire) to hug the curve of your spine?

    • @alittlebitofkatie
      @alittlebitofkatie 2 года назад +22

      I was going to comment this too. I hate how marketers have managed to make something that is worse quality, worse for the environment and just all around bad, somehow premium by sticking the word "vegan" on it. Leather is literally a by-product of the meat industry and as an omnivore I think its important to use as much of the animal as possible, rather than throw (or burn) away the leather in favour of a chemically made, sub par product.

    It immediately reminded me of Season 1 Episode 6 of "Warehouse 13". The episode with the Saracens thing on Pete's back.
    It's a cool throwback to both Doc Ock and the Saracen thing.
    Congratulations!
    I really like it!👍🏼😃

    I love it when crafters show the process, including when it doesn’t quite turn out like the idea in your head, because my goodness, that’s what it’s like for ALL of us! And the process can always teach on its own; for example, attaching the pieces with metal rings - genius! Now I have another way to solve a problem!

    I see zero issues with leather. Vegan leather is fancy words for plastic and I think the overuse of plastic is well discussed. Plus, from boots - vegan leather that were well made didn’t last one Midwestern winter before the plastic cracked apart and were completely unable to be repaired. I’ve got multiple pairs of leather boots that are multiple decades old that are able to be resoled but the leather is still in good condition.

    • @MrCarolineiscool
      @MrCarolineiscool 2 года назад +3

      Yes I agree! I think western society has a lot of decolonizing to do when it comes to veganism, agriculture, textiles, and nutrition. Saving the cows from the leather trade isn’t going to do them any good if we continue to pollute our planet with unsustainable plastic.

    • @heathergleiser
      @heathergleiser 2 года назад +2

      Used to live in the Midwest and this is so true. Faux leather boots: six months. Real leather boots: almost ten years and they’re still going. With textiles, calling it vegan is often another word for virgin plastic and the lack of durability is noticeable.

    Rachel, it's YOU and the entire creation process we enjoy watching, no matter what you're creating. Tbh there's plenty of "practical" sewing channels so it's fun to watch you creating a costuming project. And really, this was sort of practical costume project lol. Keep 'em coming
    ! I'm also LOVING watching your house coming together :-) I live in a 1920 farmhouse, and you're inspiring me, even in my bout of depression/anxiety, to get cracking on more redecorating. So THANK YOU!! In many ways :-) xx

    This is SO COOL. The way the vertebrae move is so creepy-awesome. I just sit here in awe and kind of itching to try it myself, which I rarely get with DIYs. I wonder if a choker-type neck piece could help hold it up and keep the shirt from being dragged down?

    • @palmtree1958
      @palmtree1958 2 года назад

      because it's heavy on the back, you'd probably find that a choker-type of necklace would put a lot of pressure on the front of the neck/throat area from the weight

    • @FredandGeorge
      @FredandGeorge 2 года назад

      I had the same thought - like a wide leather choker piece, maybe with some extra vertebrae bits. That or just reattaching it to a shirt with a little less stretch to the fabric. Honestly though, I was surprised how cool this looked - the concept made me go “wha?” But this has a cyberpunk vibe that really works.

I first found your video on the 10 outfits (I think it was) from your closet and was hooked...your special costumes are interesting because of your everyday-inspired wear...keep both up...and would love to also see home renovations as they are in progress/done.
