I’m not going to defend the Stephenson contract but I wouldn’t have him number 2. He is 2nd on Seattle in points, so there is at least something positive there. Even if you look at Seattle by itself, that Grubauer contract is worse. He is one of the biggest reasons the Kraken are where they are in the standings.
Lucky or not Only McCann has managed more points and technically Beniers is signed for more and the same term granted he’s better defensively and has more upside, but Seattle’s two biggest problems are scoring and Grubauer in net. It’s hard to put him as the 2nd worst contract in the NHL when he’s not really the team’s problem right now at least. I still totally agree the contract is going to look really bad over the long haul but call it luck or something else he’s still producing better than just about every other Kraken. And for a team that is this disappointing we have people that are underperforming far worse. Burakovsky is another contract that is worse than Stephenson right now.

I can kinda excuse the Grubauer deal as being unlucky, since he was a solid goalie for the Avs, even if a lot of his great numbers came from the insane 2020 Avs defence. Stephenson’s contract however is just inexcusable from Francis. Way too much term for a player turning 31 this year, too high of an AAV for a player that had his numbers boosted from an insane Golden Knights team, and just not a player that fit what Seattle needed. We needed more goal scoring so obviously we get a playmaking center who’s only going to steal ice time from some of our developing guys like Beniers, Wright, and even Catton in the future. Definitely the biggest mistake Francis has made for this team and it was clear at the time of the signing.
Huberdeau (still a terrible contract) has at least been one of Calgarys best forwards this year. The points are not supper high, but that’s a team that has only scored 4 goals like 4 times this season so far. He’s been pretty solid considering what the expectations were.
I find it odd nobody noticed he still put up 18 goals last year despite having his worst shooting percentage in like 5 seasons. Especially which how weirdly consistent his shooting percentage had been year after year. Now getting all those former Oshie PP minutes and reaping the benefits of that and regression to his mean. Not to mention just better overall team leading to more production.

as a habs fan, i've been a D1 Josh Anderson contract hater since day 1. however, this has been his been season as a Hab by far. He's never going to live up to his AAV, but man has he been an extremely solid 3rd line power forward. he's also been a monster at the forecheck and PK.

Both are overpaid substantially more than Nurse and Jones despite lower caphits
