This is a dream come true! I was raised among a community of interesting souls, jazz musicians, craftsmen, great cooks. But the most tender memories I carry are of Sister Sells playing the piano and singing. Although, in her youth, she was a "torch Singer" from the south side of Chicago, by the time we met she was in a local African-American church. I was a tow-headed little white boy, 6 or 7 years old, but she loved me and called me one of her own.
Many times as Ms Jones has played in these brief home concerts, she'll play the piano in a style reminiscent of Sister Sells' piano playing. I have long wished to hear Ms. Jones play (and sing!) some of the old Gospel songs as Sister Sells once did. Today, I am in seventh heaven! Although I enjoy each gift of song from Ms. Jones, her version of 'Amazing Grace' swept me up and back across the years into the presence of my precious friend of so long ago. Thank you! From my heart, thank you for this gift!
