My grandfather John O'Shea was on the SS River Clyde and was part of the Munster Fusiliers. The story he told to my father of the landings was how he and his best friend were at the front of their boat as they approached V beach and there was machine gun fire everywhere as the Turks were gunning down soldiers from the hills above. As they jumped out his friend was blown to pieces by one of the shells. It must have been horrific...

8686, Eddie McKnight the 1st Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers was killed in this action. His body was never found and his name is recorded on the Helles war Memorial. Eddie died far from his native Limerick in Turkey but he is not forgot by his family.

What a sad story to die so far from home but great you keep his memory alive. My Grandfather fought here as well although he survived his memories of the horror would awaken him with a scream every night until his death in the 60s...............Lest we forget

Heroically fought but disastrously planned operation.
